“‘Barkaat’ is a word that means blessings, and by virtue of his name, blessings accompanied each problem that he was faced with." says Dr. Arshia Qasim, Barkaat’s elder sister & one of the forces behind this beautiful artist. On 27th August 2006, less than a month after his 22nd birthday, Barkaat met a road accident and sustained severe head injuries. It was a hit and run incident leaving Barkaat to be found lying unconsciously on the road by passerbys. His phone was retrieved from the wreck, and a call was made to his last dialled number - home. A series of devastating revelations about his state, irreparable brain injuries, countless surgeries and helpless pleas to the best of doctors followed this tragic incident. Barkaat fell into a coma leading his family into a cold, bitter darkness that they had never thought existed. It was a complete test of faith. The family did not give up and struggled with every complication in the book. They left no stone unturned in his medical care. Three months laer, Barkaat opened his eyes.

down side up barkaat lost the use of the right side of his body and his speech after a severe injury at age 22. having survived 5 surgeries and 3 months of coma, barkaat taught himself to use his left hand to draw and paint. this is a story of how art and barkaat fought together to live, survive and emerge anew. by Madiha Saail Khan

Barkaat survived. But when he woke up, he was completely paralyzed on his right side, face, arm and leg. He couldn’t even sit straight, let alone hold his neck up. The gravest injury was to a part of his brain known as the ‘speech centre’. At the time of the accident, Barkaat had been pursuing a degree in Chartered Accountancy. He played the guitar, sang, and wrote his own songs. He was living a beautiful life and here he was confined to bed, unable to move. The young man, who was passionately discussing his plans for his future to take over the livelihood responsibilities of the household was now reduced to complete dependence. These were the problems that were obvious to the world: but what was unknown was the damage to his memory, his cognition, his intellect and what he was feeling. The question of him regaining any of this remained unknown. Would he ever

become the Barkaat that he once was? After Barkaat came home, the real struggle began. The struggle against negativity, against the sympathy and hopelessness that came from the entire medical world telling his family that this was it began. Repeatedly his family and loved ones were told there was no future for him. The few anecdotal miracle stories of recovery or finding some means of independence were often in circumstances better than them, in countries with better medical facilities, infrastructure and no bar on expenditure limits. Barkaat's mother however, believed otherwise. She was adamant on bringing her son back; she was resilient in every sense of the word and together with his family, soldiered through this painful process. Six long, tiring & painful years later, Barkaat overcame the barrier between mind and body. Over time he started to walk and to use the strength of his left side to balance out the weakness in his right. Along with all these landmarks and milestones Barkaat achieved with time, Barkaat took to drawing and painting - with his left hand. From a few crooked scribbles, Barkaat now draws with great confidence and talent. His talent was recognized at first glace by family friend and renowned artist Dr.Ijaz Anwar. He took him under his wing, and there was no turning back from there. Only a true artist recognizes another. Slowly Barkaat started spreading his wings and flustering his way to take flight. It goes without saying, this silent, immensely perceptive boy, was flying solo in no time.

Travelling is great fun. You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our new section, planes, trains & automobiles! Where did you choose to go and why? I traveled to Singapore with my family because this city is known for it's various attractions and uplifting atmosphere. My hunt for the best rollercoaster rides took me to Universal Studios. Who did you travel with? I traveled with my parents and younger brother. Where did you stay? We stayed at the Jen hotel which is located on one of the most happening streets, The Orchard Road. My time at the hotel was mostly spent swimming in the infinity pool and lounging away in our panoramic view suite.

travel diaries

What are the best shopping spots there? It's a shopaholics go-to destination. The orchard road has all the high end brands and boutiques. The ION mall on the Orchard road is a must visit as they stock the latest trends and have a great variety. My favorite shops are Moschino, ZARA and H&M. Suggest some amazing restaurants there? On Orchard Road, my favorite restaurant was Bao Today which offers the most authentic Singaporean cuisine. The world's best spring rolls were served in China Town.

travel diaries

On a family trip, a fun night out would be at the Marina Bay boardwalk. It overlooked the skyscrapers! I loved sitting here and watching the water and laser show at the lake. I would highly recommend a stop at the Toast Box to satisfy sweet tooth cravings! What can you do over there to relax and unwind?

I'm more of an outdoor person and the weather was amazing during my trip so a hike through the forest at Sentosa Island was absolutely amazing! It really helps one clear the mind and be at peace. And also nobody ever got hurt from some amazing retail therapy. Finally, any tips?

Life is pretty sweet for you on Monday and Tuesday, with freeflowing conversations and lots of good ideas thrown around. Electronic communication will be especially vital. Go out of your way to take care of emotional needs midweek, as you'll have a much easier time than usual in clearing out baggage and burying hatchets with old friends. Take time for adventure over the weekend -- even if it's just trying out a new recipe. It might also be a good time to make romantic overtures, so perhaps you could combine the two.

You won't quite feel yourself early in the week, and might race ahead in order to catch up with people who aren't even competing with you. See if you can slow down and relax. Your feelings will be out in the open by midweek, and if you're single, you'll be tempted to take a big risk and tell someone how you feel. Go for it -- the odds are in your favor. Beware of small-scale arguments over the weekend. They'll have a way of escalating beyond your control and might require outside arbitration.

leo

virgo

Life is just about perfect for you early this week -- as long as you can avoid follow-through on previous obligations. New ideas will flow as fast as you can write them down. Money and possessions will be important to you midweek, possibly too much so or in an unhealthy way. Try to get a little perspective with your friends, if possible. The weekend will be fun and full of social opportunities. Watch out for others taking life too seriously -they might not be able to handle your free spirit.

Don't listen to anyone else on Monday or Tuesday -- your own intuitions are all you need to guide you through the challenges that you'll face. You might be tempted to break out of your old behavior. Good energy starts flowing Wednesday and doesn't let up for several days; you'll find it a good time to assert your needs and make demands you'd ordinarily shy away from. Take yourself out for something nice over the weekend. You deserve it, and the better you feel about yourself, the better the world will feel about you.

Make lots of time for friends and socializing early in the week. You'll want to see them, they'll want to see you, and life will be sweeter if you all can enjoy each others' company. You'll withdraw just a bit midweek and might get lost in thought for a day or so. Don't fight it -- you're going deep, and you need to work through whatever it is that's been troubling you lately. The weekend will be like an awards show devoted to you. There's no need to prepare a speech, but expect to draw accolades from everyone who loves you.

That mind of yours is as sharp as ever on Monday and Tuesday, and you should have no problem exceeding your expectations no matter what it is you're up to. You'll be drawn to your family or network of close friends in the middle part of the week, and might need to organize things to make sure that everyone can spend time together. It'll be easy for you. The weekend won't be so easy, as distractions conspire to keep you from settling down and getting busy with your own tasks. Try to stay flexible and give everyone what they need.

Monday brings a burst of positive energy that will help you organize and communicate your deepest thoughts. Writing and intimate conversations are perfect for you now. Disruptions of all sizes will start interrupting your flow on Wednesday afternoon, and probably won't let up until sometime late on Friday. Try not to start anything new until then -- it will just get lost in the shuffle. You'll have to be part therapist and part advice columnist over the weekend when your friends line up around the block looking for answers and advice.

Try not to be overly possessive early in the week. Your flexibility will be handsomely rewarded by partners and family members. If you're expecting them to solve everything, think again. Risks will not work out to your advantage midweek, so try to play it safe and let others take the fall. You'll do quite well by conserving your resources and stepping in when the time is right. Your brain power will be up to any challenge over the weekend, and in fact you should be able to get your way in just about any situation you come across.

sagittarius capricorn 23November/21December

It's all talk for you on Monday and Tuesday as you grope and grasp for the truth but never quite reach it. You will get far enough to satisfy your curiosity, though. Relationship troubles might pop up in the middle of the week, but only superficially. There will be a sense of opposition that's more about immediate concerns than deep-seated issues. Relax and move through them. The weekend is perfect for travel of any distance. Even if it's just across town, you'll have fun and good luck if you're on the go.

Start the week by hashing out some of your better ideas with friends or co-workers. You'll be able to articulate them so well that you might find yourself leading a new project. By Wednesday you'll be finding yourself going deeper than usual into social situations, but try not to take anything too personally. It's important for you to deal with issues as soon as they arise. The weekend brings trouble with friends or family over shared resources. It won't be easy to resolve, but you can do it if you stay focused.

Your unique methods of selfexpression will draw attention from unlikely but definitely welcome sources early this week. Things might really heat up, so be ready for strong new connections. Your emotions will be overheating midweek, but don't let them distract you from real life. You'll be tempted to blow up when you know you could calm yourself; try your best to take the easy road. Over the weekend, you'll find yourself wondering how to resolve a seeming contradiction. You're the only one who can see it, but compromise is possible.

Life will get a little overwhelming on Monday as certainties start to wiggle into ambiguities, but don't panic. You thrive on ambiguity even if you don't realize it, so dive in and frolic! By Wednesday you'll be feeling great and possibly ready to take a new romantic step. A performance of some kind will figure prominently in your life on Thursday or Friday. People close to you might be annoying over the weekend, especially on the job. Try to work on health issues to take your mind off of social problems.
