ABOUT ME:

Rabeya Jalil CV

What is a superpower you wish you had? To live in people’s bodies and live as them and gain insight into what they are.

Hometown: Lahore, Pakistan Lives in: Lahore, Pakistan and Brooklyn, NY

If you could go back in time and have dinner with one person in history who would it be? My Father.

What is your style mantra? Extremely obsessive, unsatisfied

Tell us a little bit about your childhood in Lahore. What role does it play in your work? My childhood was full of travelling between Pindi, Lahore and the occasional trips to Naran Kaghan. My grandfather used to write his diary and I guess that’s where the fascination with stationary & paper began. My mother was a Kindergarten teacher who’d bring home work that had a lot of hands-on arts & craft work which I would help out with. My father would make us animals & toys out of play doh. I guess the environment in the house naturally helped me incline towards arts. What first drew you to the arts? Just the idea of N.C.A. I’d heard of the people and characters from there. I was fascinated by how they lived freely, dressed uniquely and had an air of cool about them. I felt they didn’t care about what people thought of them and lived in their own world. I was fascinated by what went on behind the walls of the institution that had produced such geniuses. 28

What is your background in the arts? I was studying at Bahria University and was absolutely out of place there. One night before my economics exam, I sat, trying to concentrate when my friend asked me whether I was genuinely happy with my decision to study humanities at Bahria. I walked up to my parents the same night and told them I would not be appearing for this exam! They’ve always been understanding and so that’s when I decided to follow my passion. I applied to N.C.A., got accepted and never looked back! Where do you get your inspiration from? Are they any particular art movements that inspire you? My inspiration came from how people react to situations, how they’re so similar and dissimilar in situations. How people want to be the perfect package to please someone; like being the perfect housewife, husband, daughter, employee and wanting to be seeking someone’s appreciation and in the process becoming a brand and kind of layering yourself with sth you’re really not. The kind of superficiality that prevails is sth that always bothers me and is sth that keeps me going. With it come strands of concerns that are with me right now. When you step out of your immediate culture and step back in you understand stuff with a lot more clarity. It’s important to deconstruct and unlearn to understand better. My masters was in Art Education and worked in artistic development of children and worked with children. Children’s work gives me the most energy. I find the work created by elders to be constipated, inhibited and trained. It’s so planned and loses the essence of it. Children have a knack of being bold and honest and so their work never is inhibited. I am very pulled towards abstract expressionism. I have followed artists the likes of Robert Rauschenberg & Cytyombly from the 60s and 70s era. I also admire Qudus Mirza and Armagori. Can you walk us through the process of developing your work? It is challenging to convey a complete experience and engage the viewer in a 2D experience. It could start with a random act like driving down the road. Something that makes me question a notion or idea; it could be a billboard, ppl praying, or a family sitting on a bike. When I’m ready, I’ll curate these experiences and begin. There’s a lot of creating, erasing and redoing. I am proud of being brave enough to erase my work and let my instincts lead me. I work with plenty of layering and have to push myself to stop looking at my work to be able to resolve it! You use a lot of text in your work. Is there a theme or message you're trying to give? Initially the text was part of the visual as a mark and was not meant to be a reading agent. In recent works it has been used as a reference to help people make direct associations.

Who is your mentor? It would be really unfair for me to take a single name. There’s so many people who help us through our journeys. People we can’t even maybe name may have helped us with or without our knowledge in becoming who we are today. Tell us about your favourite piece. I created this project out of an old cassette player, removed the reel and rolled in paper with people’s opinion on what they find to be the best thing about Pakistan. The piece was precious to me for the idea it presented. We are so cynical and hopeless about Pakistan that we forget to acknowledge the good happening around us. You see the people going abroad from Pakistan barely ever have anything positive to say about it. Even when friends sit together it’s always a highlight on the negatives. I say, fix yourself; if you’re seeing something wrong around you, change it. It’s bad for a community to feel hopeless. I feel as cultural practitioners it’s our responsibility to create dialogue around what’s positive and highlight the good emerging around us. We read that you are working on a novel which is based on a family in Lahore. Can you tell us more about this? We’ve been working with Idaara-e-taleem-oagaahi on a project mapping migrations of people from India, Burma and Bangladesh into Pakitsan. We’ve interviewed children and their parents or grandparents and created visual narratives of their lives. This is a trilingual publication and its biggest component is its visual one. We are waiting on the final edit and the publication is expected to release soon.

What is one question that nobody asks you but you wish they did? This Question! What advice would you give to a younger you? I would like to tell my younger self to set her priorities. I’d like to tell her to hold one thread and everything will follow. I’d tell her to be more sure of herself and less aggressive. I’d ask her to control her instant reactions on things and be more settled and less in a state of transition all the time. Are there any upcoming projects we should be excited for? I’ll soon be doing two presentations and a panel discussion in Chicago. One of the presentations is regarding the Mapping Migration Project we just spoke of and the other is a public art project by Karachi Youth Initiative in collaboration with Indus Valley School of Arts & Architecture. The Panel discussion is regarding how projects like the latter mentioned can become part of school curricula. We’ve also received a grant to carry out a series of arts workshops with blind people in order to understand creative expressions through senses other than vision. The location has yet to be confirmed. What is the quality you most admire in people? Humility What talent do you wish you had? To be more contained and to be able to choose my words more wisely. Most important things in your life: My work- it is my ibaadat. Other than that sincerity, integrity and commitment.

Your early adoption of some gadget or catchphrase on Monday will have positive repercussions for you throughout the week and might set you on a new path. Your management skills will come into play midweek, and will definitely work to your advantage. The more people you've got on your side, the better. By Friday at the latest, your vision will be taking shape in reality and you'll have all the assistance you can use. Watch out for little frustrations over the weekend; you might tend to blow them out of proportion.

Monday will feel a little bit unfair, like everyone has won a prize but you. The feeling won't last long, because by early Tuesday morning you'll be feeling grounded and able to reclaim any lost ground. In fact, midweek will be a good time for you to expand your ambitions and set new goals. People whom you don't know well will rub you the wrong way on Thursday or Friday, but it's just superficial personality conflict rather than a sign of deeper hostility. Get together with friends over the weekend, especially if you're feeling down.

You'll be thinking and operating on a deeper level on Monday. You'll take your current interests somewhere you hadn't expected to go. Family or business partners might start acting dictatorial on Tuesday, but it won't last long and you're probably better off just going along until they get bored. Late in the week you will be open to new ideas and might find someone who's on your wavelength to expand your conceptual space. The weekend will inspire you to at least think about making a big change in your life. Try to articulate your desire as clearly as possible.

Do something nice for yourself on Monday, and don't let yourself make a single sacrifice unless it's vital to your sense of self. Your sensory and interpersonal awareness will be extremely sensitive through Thursday, so get ready for a barrage of data that might overwhelm from time to time. Your emotions will be out of sync with most people late in the week. Expect to feel a sense of alienation, but also a sense of pride in feeling honest emotions. Stick with big-picture or creative tasks over the weekend.

You'll be on the cutting edge all day Monday, but not so far out that you make your friends nervous. Midweek brings a strong sense of needs -- both your own and others'. Try to help out as much as you can, but don't neglect yourself. You'll have all the answers on Thursday and Friday, and your friends and family will be glad for all your help and advice. The weekend will bring an opportunity, but you should be profoundly skeptical. That's not to say you shouldn't take it -- but examine it carefully first.

Though you'll feel constrained by family or work obligations on Monday, try to just go with the flow and let freedom come naturally. Soon -- as early as Tuesday morning -- you'll see a definite payoff, as well as an up welling of powerful creative energy. Later in the week, you'll need to be flexible as little diversions and interruptions get in the way of your daily routines. On Saturday and Sunday, you'll have to be the driving force for the group, but don't get too frustrated if others dawdle.

Very early in the week, you'll feel like exploring some new territory. It might be actual turf, or it might be emotional -- go wherever you feel is calling out for you. By Tuesday morning you'll have reached your limit in at least one direction. It might be an authority figure in your way or a mental block. Later in the week you'll feel in touch with those around you, and have a much sharper insight into their thinking than you had in the past. The weekend will be busy but slow, so don't get frustrated if it turns out that no individual project advances very far

Follow along with the flow around you on Monday -- but keep a wary eye on the road ahead. The middle part of the week is great for career moves. You'll be in the good graces of your supervisors and will have a firm understanding of your ambitions. An unexpected message or complaint comes late in the week from parents, elderly relatives or possibly an old friend. It won't be pleasant at first, but you can turn it into a positive. Try to stick with creative pursuits over the weekend. Your juices will really be flowing.

Monday is great -- you'll be in the best mood you've seen all month or maybe all year. The good mood will last longer if you take time out for artistic culture midweek. Try to soak up something totally new to you. Your social skills will be sharp on Thursday and Friday, which is good timing as you'll meet one or more new people that will grow into important roles in your life. Be very careful with valuables over the weekend; your attachments to material things will be extremely tenuous.

Step into the week carefully and confidently. If you know where you're going and have the trip planned, there won't be any problems. Midweek you'll be rewarded or otherwise recognized for your great performance. It's a good time to finish up projects and start on new ones. New ideas will be a dime a dozen later on; try to stall on taking any action that deviates too far from your pre-existing plans. Over the weekend, you'll be able to get a lot done, even without much help. Music will be a great way to break up the work time.

Big changes are afoot on Monday, and they'll be mostly for the good. You might find yourself thinking about new directions. Tuesday and Wednesday will be fairly mysterious; it might seem as if everything just happens on its own, without any discernible cause. Stay flexible and the feeling will pass. Your brilliance will be on display toward the end of the week, and you'll scoop up some new believers as you rattle off your plans for change. Be careful with spending over the weekend -- make sure that you balance your own needs with your generosity.
