leap into leap day

1

AS THE SAYING GOES, "LEAP YEAR COMES ONE YEAR IN FOUR, AND FEBRUARY HAS ONE DAY MORE." SINCE IT'S A 366 DAY KIND OF YEAR, WE'VE ROUNDED UP A LIST OF 29 FUN AND FESTIVE IDEAS WHICH WILL HELP YOU MAKE THE MOST OF THIS QUADRENNIAL EVENT. Leap day falls on a Monday this year, so brush away the Monday blues and try to remain positive throughout the day. A tip would be to sleep early on Sunday night.

3

6

5

Schedule some ‘me time’ with a relaxing spa appointment or long hot bath. Book yourself an appointment at our favourite Arammish, Nirvana or Neelo's.

7 Use the extra day to spend time with your grandparents and take some time out to listen to the stories of their childhood; they’re actually quite interesting.

Host a leap year party or dinner with friends and family. 30

Make a leap day time capsule to be opened on 29th February 2020. This can include anything from mementos to letters you write to your four year older self with things you want to and hope to achieve by 2020.

2

The chance of being born on a leap day is often said to be one in 1,461 or 0.068%. Since this is such a rare occurrence make that person feel special by celebrating their birthday like the four years they’ve waited for! Fun fact, babies born on 29th February are known as ‘leapers’ or ‘leaplings.’

4

Engage in the spring-cleaning you’ve put aside. If some items and clothes are in good condition donate them to a notable charity like the new wall of kindness in Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar.

8

Buy a box of Extra gum and give a piece to everyone you know, just for fun.

10 Make an

origami frog to really get in the festive mood. It will be a new skill to add to your list!

9

Pull a Ferris Bueller and take the day off because technically, if you do the math, you don’t get paid for this extra day.

11

Sleep ALL DAY because technically the day doesn’t exist. You’ll wake up and it’ll be March 1st, just like every other year

T s p l s

12

13

Make leap day cheat day and indulge in your favourite savoury and sweet snacks.

Or spend the day recovering from the three day eating marathon that is Lahore Eat Food Festival (26th-28th February). We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

17

16 15

Dig up the newspaper dated February 29th 2012 and read about what was happening then and think about what’s happening today in the world. It’s a great way to gain perspective

14

On that note, take some time to think about all the great things you have in life

18 Go visit a museum or historical site in your city. Mohatta Palace Museum always has a host of interesting exhibitions.

Reconnect with old friends! Schedule a catch up session and enjoy the evening.

21

20

Pray in a mosque you’ve always wanted to. Wazir Khan Mosque is on my list.

22 Catch up on your guilty pleasure TV shows guiltlessly. No judgement for the reality TV junkies out there

19

23

Watch a new movie in cinemas now or an old classic. We highly recommend watching our very own Bachaana - now playing in theatres!

24 Treat yourself to some leap day shopping. Sapphire's new lawn collection hits stores today!

25

Watch the movie Leap Year with Amy Adam’s and learn about the interesting tradition they have in Ireland on leap day, where women propose to men

Teachers: Plan some fun leap day activities for your students like playing leap frog, learning about frogs and toads or a fun leap year math quiz

26

That book you’ve bought that you’ve always meant to read, lets crack it open and make a start. Or buy the book you’ve had on your must read list! Check out The Last Word and Liberty Books for some new buys.

27

When ordering at a restaurant try ordering something new that you’ve been too scared to try like escargot, mussels or Carpaccio. You might surprise yourself and actually like them. Aylanto and Okra have our vote!

Or try a completely new restaurant to surprise your taste buds. Udon House, Pomelo Avenue and Siam Islamabad are still relatively undiscovered.

Sign up for an unexpected activity like scuba diving! Scuba Adventures Pakistan has a great certification course enabling you to get certified with just two dives. The Lahore Sightseeing is another fabulous option.

29

Lastly, you can completely ignore the day and follow your daily normal routine.

28

Start the day with some sunrise yoga or if you’re like me and can never wake up on time try some sunset yoga in your garden. Or go for a run in the park instead of the treadmill in a boring old gym 2016

Tell us a little about your brand, Mariyam D. Rizwan? When & How did it start? Right after I graduated from Chelsea College of Art & Design, I participated in the Pakistan Fashion Week London which was an excellent experience for me,. When I moved back to Pakistan my father encouraged and supported me to open up my own store. The construction took about a year and I finally launched Mariyam D. Rizwan in December 2015. What is your collection, Forbidden Romance based on? Forbidden Romance was inspired by the famous historical figures such as Marie Antoinette who was seen as a fashion icon & trendsetter of her time. Why did you decide to become a fashion designer? Is it your passion? It's just always been something that I've wanted to do. It's my passion. Design has become an extension of me. Are you from a fashion school? Or did you have 32

the in-born creativity in you? Yes, I attended Chelsea College of Art & Design in London for my BA Textile Design and I did several design courses from Central Saint Martins London & Pattern cutting from Paris. I also have a Diploma in Interior Designing from Central Saint Martins. However, the passion for design comes from within and with the support of my family the dream came true. What’s your favorite part about being a fashion designer? I am generally inclined towards painting and making fashion illustrations. However the most fun part of being a designer is having to research followed by an exciting process of design. Do you keep up with trends or make your own? I only adopt a trend if it fits my personal style. I believe that style is eternal and I am totally a fan of old school charm. Being a fresh designer in this industry. Do you feel there is a lot of competition? Yes there is a lot of competition but if you ensure that you have a pure, strong vision and have confidence it helps. I also feel it’s important to be prepared to take advice and criticism but keep your opinion and conviction strong and solid. Find someone to support you, who can compensate for your weaknesses and help you to overcome obstacles. One must have an unwavering sense of belief in your artistic work to survive in the fashion industry. Since this was your first shoot. How was the experience? It was a fantastic experience! Ayaz Anis is amazing at what he does. Tell us a little about your main source of inspiration in designing? London's exoticism and architecture had an enormous impact and influence on my work. I have also been painting and drawing most of my life so that also has always been a source of inspiration, I continue to travel extensively and collect inspiration from every possible source in order to continue to develop my aesthetic. Our readers would like to know a little about your personal life. When not at work, what are you mostly engaged in? As a designer you never really switch off, your mind is constantly whirring and thinking of ideas. The addition of constant connectivity with emails and social media means a good work/life balance is increasingly difficult to keep. However, to maintain my sanity I make sure I spend my time with my family. When I am not working I am usually travelling as I feel it brings power, compassion and creativity into your life. Most importantly, If you weren't a fashion designer. What else would you be? I would definitely want to further pursue painting. I am extremely passionate about it. 2016

planes, trains & automobiles

Travelling is great fun. You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our new section, planes, trains & automobiles! Where did you choose to go and why? We chose to go to India, because to me Delhi is a second home. It’s like being in Lahore, but with a lot of other fun things to do and sights to see. It’s a great holiday if you’re on a budget and also really close by which helped us make the decision. Also, we have friends in Bhopal and really wanted to go see the City of Lakes, as we had heard such great things about it. Who did you travel with? I travelled with my fiancé, as he had never been to India before. It was my fourth time, and I’ve gone with family and friends before, but this time around I really wanted him to see India through my eyes.

travel diaries

Where did you stay? In both Delhi and Bhopal we stayed with family friends, as I feel like you really get a feel of a place when you stay with locals. They know the best places to shop, eat, where to go when and what to do in the city. What are the best shopping spots there? So shopping isn’t really what Bhopal is for but I bought a beautiful maang tikka from Chowk. As for Delhi, if you’re looking for a real bargain make sure to hit Janpath (for high street fashion), Lajpat (for traditional stuff: saris, lehngas, anarkalis), or Chandni Chowk if you’re feeling brave. Additionally the malls at Vasant Kunj are phenomenal. The

travel diaries What can you do over there to relax and unwind? We went to the Jehan Numa Retreat, to unwind, it is a gorgeous spa and retreat on the outskirts of Bhopal. They offer a range of therapeutic and holistic treatments and they even grow their own organic veggies. It’s a great places to just get massages, sip on some mojitos, and relax by the pool. Finally, any tips? Don’t have preconceived notions about the place, as a Pakistani I am always treated with immense amounts of love and affection whenever I cross the border. Carry bug spray, use sun screen and don’t be afraid of taking the auto or the metro to travel, it’s so much more convenient than hiring a car especially in Delhi traffic.

travel diaries

Suggest some amazing restaurants there? The restaurants at Khan Market are all great. You cannot go wrong if you head there for a meal, but our favorite place hands down to eat was Mamagoto. Their dumplings and red curry are to die for. We ate there at least 4 times in the week that we were in Delhi. India just does some of the best Pan Asian food, I have ever had, another hidden gem is the Oriental Octopus at the Habitat Centre. In Bhopal, the kacchay gosht ki biryani, at the Jehan Numa Palace, is probably the best biryani I’ve ever had, anywhere. Also, the restored Palace is a gorgeous location for dinner, as you can just sit in their courtyard and enjoy your meal.

place. There is a really nice Nepali place you can hit for dinner, the Nepalis also have some crazy good dumplings, you can take in drinks at the Tea Room which is the quaintest bar I have ever seen and there are a bunch of places to go dancing in the vicinity. It might be a little too hipster for some, but I love the laid back vibe of the place. Additionally, Connaught Place, is a great place to spend an evening, you can take in the colonial architecture, and it’s full of 20 something’s after work hours, just having coffee or dinner.

travel diaries

Ambience, Promenade and Emporium malls are interconnected through walkways, and you can find local labels like Pantaloons, Anokhi (if you’re into block prints and vegetable dyes this place is heaven), and Westside; high street brands Zara, Mango, Steve Madden at the Promenade, and high end brands like Louis Vuitton and Tarun Tahiliani at the Emporium. We spent a lot of time at the malls this time around, as the summer was quite brutal. For the boys, if you're into technology the Reliance Store at the Ambience Mall is a treat. Delhi Haat and Hauz Khaas were some of my fiancé's favorite places to buy local art.

Tell us about the sights noone should miss out on It goes without saying that India is tourist paradise. But my favorite sights from this trip would be the Golden Temple and the Stupas at Saanchi.

Consider scheduling some physical activity for Monday -- either a heavy workout or a long walk or run. You're going to be inundated by details, and an outlet for all that mental frustration could make the day pass more easily. On Tuesday and Wednesday, put the other guy first -- you need to overcome your usual competitiveness (at least this once) if you want to get ahead. Starting on Thursday and on into the start of the weekend, expect some quiet time and deep thinking. You've got a lot on your mind, and a subliminal tide is swelling to help you sort things out. On Saturday and Sunday, seek out adventure!

Monday should bring you nothing but fun and flirtation, as you're surrounded by friends and radiating charm. The excitement continues into Tuesday and Wednesday, although probably of a more mundane variety. Your usual work or home routine gets reshuffled by the introduction of something welcome and new. Indulge yourself, but don't overdo it. Starting on Thursday and on into the start of the weekend, expect your usual patience to be tested -- something has aroused your passions, and you may need to stop waiting and take action. On Saturday and Sunday, exercise caution taking risks. Things aren't what they seem.

This isn't like you! You're usually such a smooth-tongued communicator, but on Monday you'll have to work extra hard to make yourself clear (especially with family members and others close to you). On Tuesday and Wednesday, you'll get you're your silver tongue back -- and others will line up just to get in on all the fun you're having. Don't be afraid to start something even if you have no intention of following through. Somebody else will pick up the ball. Starting on Thursday and on into the weekend, use your intelligence and insight to unearth hidden information. On Saturday and Sunday, you can guarantee a good time with some good old-fashioned teamwork

You're stealing the spotlight on Monday. Don't think others don't notice -- and admire -- your better qualities, and don't be surprised to find them flocking to your side to remind you. On Tuesday and Wednesday, you might find friction on the home front. You can still forge ahead on new projects, but try to listen to others (and maybe even include them in your plans) to soothe ruffled feelings. On Thursday and Friday, you might feel like you're emotional world is being turned on its end. Don't overreact, though -- just lay low and let this phase pass. This weekend, do something for yourself, and don't feel like you need to apologize.

As you start the week, expect some unusual introversion on your part. Use Monday to take time and out and reassess the big picture. Now is a great time for mapping out long-term strategies and plans. On Tuesday and Wednesday, your confidence and charisma will have everyone falling all over themselves to agree with you -- and just to be with you! Let other sin on the fun you're planning. Starting on Thursday and on into the weekend, you'll need to show some extra caution and look for hidden motivations. There's no need for paranoia, but you could definitely stand to get a better sense of the situation. This weekend, turn up the volume! Expect fiery feelings and well-nigh amazing adventure.

You just couldn't ask for a better Monday. (How often can you say that?) The week begins with you at your super-organized, over-achieving best. Whip all those schedules, budgets and pesky little details into shape, and you'll be able to accomplish (or at least get a good start on) almost anything. Follow that energy into Tuesday and Wednesday with impulsiveness and unusually (for you) spontaneous decisions. Starting on Thursday and on into the weekend, expect your intellect and curiosity to get piqued -now is a good time for heady thoughts and deep conversations. This weekend, try to go with the flow even if that means letting some of your responsibilities slip.

sagittarius capricorn 23November/21December

22December/20January

Monday could be a struggle, as you find yourself butting heads with authority figures and juggling way too many details. Take a deep breath and relax, though, because your week will get much better. On Tuesday and Wednesday, you'll be universally loved -- not just by friends but by everyone you meet. Let your wishes be known. Starting on Thursday and on into the weekend, your mood might shift down a couple gears, into a more day-dreamy state. Indulge your imagination and enjoy the introversion. This weekend, you'll switch back to good old gregariousness, and you'll have the most fun in big, galumphing groups.

Engage your ambition on Monday. Map out big plans and take on daring ideas. You can accomplish a lot with the proper preparation. Tuesday and Wednesday are perfect days for starting new projects and tackling new challenges. You might not be a masterful communicator right now, but you've got plenty of energy to get things done on your own. Starting on Thursday and on into the weekend, you'll have an easy time handling decisions and details. Friends who admire your detached, objective take on things will gladly give you any help you need. This weekend, don't get hung up on the particulars. Trust your ability to persevere in accomplishing the seemingly impossible.

Monday could present extraordinary opportunities for communication. You can learn a lot (and have a lot of fun) just talking to people, both friends and friendsto-be. Just make sure you listen as much as you speak. On Tuesday and Wednesday, you're absolutely on fire -- metaphorically, of course. All eyes are on you, and people can't get enough of your confidence and charm. Enjoy the attention and be open to romance. Starting on Thursday and on into the weekend, your thoughts could wander to material things. Now is a good time to reassess your possessions and take stock of budgets and finances. This weekend, expect to explore. You'll cover new ground and share new ideas.

It's all about the details on Monday. Provided you can navigate the many events and plans, you'll have a great day (and you might even learn a juicy secret or two). You'll be less interested in hanging out with friends on Tuesday and Wednesday, but you can put that unusual introversion to good use -- spend some time really mulling over anything that's been bugging you, and you could find some much-needed resolution. Starting on Thursday and on into the weekend, you'll be a peoplemagnet. Others will seem magically drawn you, as you radiate charisma and confidence. Later this weekend, forget yourself and get caught up in the moment.

exercise extreme caution on Monday! You need to make sure you know what (and whom) you're dealing with, especially in anything involving money or business. Look under the surface to find the facts. On Tuesday and Wednesday, try something new. Experience is an excellent teacher, and you could learn a lot from some novel activity. Connect with someone you normally wouldn't to get things started. Starting on Thursday and on into the weekend, you might feel yourself slowing down and getting lost in thought (especially about your career or other bigpicture concerns). Give into the introversion and seek out some privacy. This weekend, you'll find the most fun in big groups.

You don't have to have all the facts first, do you? On Monday, don't be afraid to act even if you don't have all the answers. You don't want to miss this opportunity, and you can always sort out the details later. On Tuesday and Wednesday, look for problems in a partnership. You can cut down on conflicts by settling debts and past issues. Out with the old, in with the new! Starting on Thursday and on into the weekend, you'll need to make an extra effort to stand up for yourself -especially in any big, legal or business matters. This weekend, trust in your own absurdly good luck.
