CONTOUR YOUR WAY Don’t be intimated by the super complicated face contouring videos on Instagram! Contouring is a red-hot trend right now, but it is by no means a “new” technique. It has been used to sculpt the face and create a “shadows and light” effect to flatter the face since a very long time. To find the right contoured look for yourself, study your face in the mirror and observe where light naturally reflects on the high points of your features and where it creates shadows. The goal is to softly intensify that light and shadow effect with high quality, blendable contour and highlighter shades.

beauty tricks & hacks

by Meherbano Sethi of Luscious Cosmetics

for the past nine years I have been designing products that a beginner can use, but with professional-looking results that a makeup artist would envy. during the countless hours, months and, in some cases, years i’ve spent developing and perfecting some of luscious cosmetics’ bestselling products; i have learned some interesting tips and tricks. i have also learned that there is no right or wrong as far as makeup is concerned. with a little practice you can be your own pro makeup artist.

My perfect contour hack: Highlight First! Everyone tends to start with the darker contour shades before finishing with a highlighter. For beginners, I recommend placing the highlighter on your cheekbones, forehead, and bridge of the nose, Cupid’s bow and center of the chin first and then creating natural-looking shadows with a medium toned contour shade. Once you get the hang of it, don’t be afraid to add a bit of the darker contour shade for a more dramatic effect. Blend very softly with a large powder brush to blur any lines for a flawless finish.

CONCEAL UNDER YOUR EYES IN A “V” INSTEAD OF A “U” We’re all used to swiping concealer on the under-eye area in a “U” shape. Look closely in the mirror next time you do it, this technique creates a visible difference between the under-eye area and the rest of your face. We forget that the keyword in a polished makeup look is “blend”. Applying concealer in a “V” shape not only brightens up the entire center of your face, it creates a professional looking graduated effect as it blends into your complexion. DON’T SKIP THE EYE PRIMER For me personally, eye makeup takes the longest time when I’m getting ready for a night out. It’s the part I enjoy most and it gives me a few minutes of delightful playtime deciding what I will use from an array of gorgeous shades. Eye primer is a kind of insurance policy that I depend on to keep all that hard work fade-proof and in place. Imagine if DaVinci had painted the Mona Lisa with washable paint! One bead of sweat, some rain, or a humid night and it would be bye bye masterpiece. A great eye primer gives your eyeshadows something to adhere to and makes them look more vibrant, locking in your look till you’re ready to take it off.

GO EASY ON THE WATER-PROOF LIPSTICK (unless you go deep sea diving everyday!) My own personal and shocking (but completely logical) opinion on waterproof lipstick that needs a remover to take off: don’t use it all the time, it stresses and ages the skin of your lips. Your lips are a part of your face, one of the most delicate parts, in fact. Unlike lashes and eyelids, the delicate skin on our lips sheds and regenerates constantly, aging a little faster than the rest of our face because we can’t use our expensive face creams on this area. Applying a lipstick that forms a waterproof, usually quite drying and creasing “film” over your lips can’t really be a good idea, not to mention all those extra ingredients. I never seem to be able to remove it properly (I’m sure all the transfer-proof lipstick wearers out there have had to taste makeup remover ONCE in their lives!) and it never seems to fade evenly over the course of the day/evening. I love long-wearing lipstick formulas that last a long time but fade softly into a flattering stain instead of a flaky mess that my lips need days to recover from.
