barcelos: really peri good by MARYAM S. KHAN
a die-hard born and raised lahori, who cares about education, dogs, food, hip hop and a host of other things she’d rather not bore you with. it’s a chicken chain that started in South Africa. Many menu items are identical as are the four bottles of varying spice sauces perched neatly on every table. There’s plenty however, that sets it apart and makes it worthy of a spot on your relaxed dining rotation.
P
akistanis are not the most adventurous eaters. We might think we are – what with our penchant for marinated goat guts and brains and feet – but most of us swear by a rotating list of staples and places. Thai? I order the same dish every time. Pizza? The delivery man knows me better than most members of my immediate family. Afro-Portuguese chicken? Uh wait… there’s more than one option?
Let’s start with the main event: the flame-grilled chicken here is a delight. Barcelos uses a unique mechanized cooking technique which results in melt-in-your-mouth chicken that is succulent to the core – a worthy feat in the oft too dry breast piece. We picked the third spiciest sauce for the marinade – the veri peri – which lent it a full-bodied smokiness, but next time I might crank it up a notch to supa peri. For appetizers, we ordered the Chicken Livers (a little too salty for my liking frankly but complemented well by the mellow sweetness of the accompanying Portuguese roll) and the hummus. I’ll pause for a second and write a short ode to the hummus because - quite unexpectedly - it might have been among the best I’ve had in Lahore. It was smooth and garlicky with a slight kick, and it came served with terrific pita bread (all the breads are supplied by Aylanto’s bakery and are superb carb monster fuel.)
When I first saw the Barcelos rooster peering at me across Mall One, I clutched my Peri Peri bottle from the Restaurant-That-Rhymes-With-Randos close The entrée list is short but spans the gamut between salads, pitas, to my chest and reassured it that I would never wraps, gravies, and traditional rice dishes (and includes beef substituleave it for another sauce. Here’s the thing though: I might have to I’ll pause for a second and write a short ode break that promise. The drinks list is spare - besides the bottomless soda, there is lemonade and icetea. Frankly, I don’t think an elaborate drinks menu is necessary with meals like this (the thought of fresh juice and chicken makes me ill) but I’m sure Barcelos will soon succumb to the mint mojito craze that inevitably grips every restaurant. The dessert menu on the other hand, was an outlier in an otherwise well thought-out menu.
