once upon a dream After 9 years of modest work the Farhat Khalid Label launches it’s bridal wear collection for the first time in print. The label believes in attentively working with its consumers’ requests and modifies each outfit accordingly. This collection visibly takes its inspiration from the youthful, eastern brides of today and it displays an understanding of the mystifying stages an independent girl goes through before, during and after the most essential day of her life. Overall, each outfit has been designed keeping in mind the designer’s Hindustani origins and values and has taken inspiration from the many rituals that occur there.

UP CLOSE & PERSONAL WITH YOUSAF SHAHBAZ Tell us a bit about STRATA by Saira Ahsan It’s quite a basic concept. It’s a space design studio. We provide complete architectural services including landscaping, interior design, execution and finishing, custom installations as well as bespoke furniture and objects. It sounds really boring when you put it like that, no? But we really aren’t, I promise. We are all of the above, but for people who do not want generic design, are not happy with the regular designer/client relationship, willing to think out of the box and let design make their lives better. When did you first develop an interest in architecture? I’ve been a keen observer of behavioral and personality patterns, and how the dynamics of light, space, scale and order can influence them, since as long as I can remember. I used to love playing with lego, paper models and playdough as a kid too, so, I don’t know, when I was 5? Who or what inspired you to start a space design studio? 44

2014
It was never meant to be that. It was supposed to be just an architectural office. But I started working on the new furniture line for Saira Ahsan simultaneously and then everything in between happened because we needed a natural link between the two. Also, it allowed for crazier experimentation! What are some of the challenges you face? It’s like going to war every day. There is so much resistance towards everything that is out of the ordinary. Clients resist experimental designs and the workforce resists the execution techniques needed to implement them. It’s really hard to outsource anything since there is absolutely no concept of quality control or deadlines either. Finding loyal and hardworking team members who also are in sync with you is also next to impossible. But honestly, I’m just whining…all these issues probably wouldn’t exist if I didn’t have OCD and wasn’t a control freak! What makes STRATA different from everyone else? Yes we’re an architectural/interior/furniture company but we don’t function like any one of them. We have a process oriented
approach as opposed to a design oriented one. Also, the process requires a lot of studio time from the client because the outcome is purely shaped by and derived from their lifestyle, personality and quirks. Every project then becomes a spatial realization of ‘A’ specific existing identity, which can be a client, a brand or a design philosophy. Classic or modern space design, which one do you prefer and why? Modern is what’s happening now. It’s the new and fresh and that could include influences from so many classical styles. Even if I was to generalise, it’s like asking me if I prefer Rembrandt or Warhol. Or Koon’s or Monet. I love them all and there’s no need to choose. There’s so much to learn from all different styles and periods. A specific style can be more appropriate for a given situation or space at a given moment in time but both can coexist very happily in the heart and in design. Are you comfortable with your clients wanting to customize your designs? Always. In fact we encourage it! It’s no fun making the same thing over and over. And most things don’t work as perfectly from one space to another anyway. Tell us about the growth of STRATA in Pakistan as a high end luxury space design brand? Do you plan to take it international? That’s the dream. Hopefully at some point in my life I’ll be working out of a New York office, but honestly I really don’t plan that far ahead, since I can barely deal with the now. In Pakistan, we plan to mainly focus on Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad since that’s where our primary clientele resides, but we are working on projects in many other parts of the country too. It’s really cool that there are so many fun people out there willing to push past the standard design cliché’s. Tell us something not many people know about your design aesthetic. My aesthetic is generally based on proportion and technique. I can appreciate almost anything if it’s well executed, even if it doesn’t affect me any other way. More recently it’s stirred by the juxtaposition of techniques or alarmingly contrasting imaging/ styles but it keeps shifting. I hope it keeps on doing so. Walk us through some of your favorite projects That’s really hard. They’re so many which have been special. There’s this house we’ve designed and constructed in Bedian which is unique since it’s the only project of its kind that we’ve
done so far. It’s built bang in the middle of a very open property and is to function as the family’s primary residence and not a “farm house” (whatever that means). The client was very understanding of our desire to only construct what was actually needed and of the sensitivity required towards the relationship between each structural member and their treatment as an individual identity. The idea was to create very honest and pure spaces with the emphasis on their relationship to each other, with the site, its views and orientation being the primary inspiration and design keys. I can pick it as a favorite because it’s one which makes me most happy when I’m in it. I’m really looking forward to sharing photos of it when it’s a hundred percent complete (and if I ever get around to actually photographing any complete project). Who are you favorite architects and why? 1. Bjarke Ingels from Denmark because of his commitment to public space and for being super cool! 2. Ma Yansong from China because he’s completely crazy. 3. Diller, Scofidio and Renfro from USA because they envisioned the High Line park which is awesome. 4. The architects at Snohetta in Norway because of their constant structural experimentation and detail. Rapid fire: Favorite holiday destination? New York City Favorite cuisine? Asian fusion. and laddoo peethi Your perfect Sunday? The one in which I get a hundred things done Guilty pleasure? If it’s real pleasure I don’t ever feel guilty Favorite Cologne? Colonia Intensa by Acqua di Parma Hobbies? I don’t think I’ve ever had one. Does anyone even have time for hobbies anymore? Most daring thing you’ve done? I was in Amsterdam with some friends for my 30th birthday last month and I made an impromptu plan and went on to the most romantic city, Paris, alone. I’d never been and I don’t speak a word of French. I was there for 6 days and had the best time. You don’t need a lover in Paris. It’s is a love affair all on its own.

In the Spotlight Deepak Perwani talks to Paperazzi about his collaboration with Zeniya Lawn!
How did the collaboration between Zeniya Lawn and Deepak Perwani take place? The collection took us three months to design. The process is very simple. After the contract was signed with Zeniya we looked at what they have designed in the past and what was the unique selling point for Zeniya. Our collaboration with Zeniya Lawn is happening for Spring/Summer 2014 and onwards; we are looking forward to three collections Spring/Summer, Midsummer, and Fall Winter. The first collection SS’14 will launch nationwide on 19th April, so keep your eyes peeled!
Tell us a bit about the design aesthetic of Zeniya Lawn by Deepak Perwani? Which signature design is your personal favourite? The predominant colour is blue; a lot of black; we have red, peach, yellow, and many colours. We have taken paneling out of the shirts and got straight lines in lawn. The designs are playful and fun, but much more simple, as it is the signature design by Deepak Perwani, my favourite. How has your experience been working with the Zeniya Lawn team? The experience has been quite wonderful so far. I feel that when you work with a young dynamic team a lot of forces are pulled together and a positive outcome is generated. And so far, I have had a great time with Zeniya Lawn.

My family has a tradition of wearing chatta patti ghararas on weddings, especially mehndis, where the colourful gharara gels perfectly with the colourful event. I wore a Rampuri cut gharara from Lucknow paired with an ethnic Rajistani-work kameez. It was a bit of a risky combination but my mother envisioned and put it together wonderfully. This riot of colour was set off with a sheer, leafy green dupatta. Surprisingly, the choice of dupatta was the most difficult decision, as it was extremely important to lend the whole outfit lightness and not be too overwhelming.
Being a bride is possibly one of the most difficult processes one goes through! We plan our wedding day and what we will wear years before the actual wedding. Meticulous planning goes into each look from the colour combinations and embellishment of the outfits to the jewellery, hair and makeup. Here we feature some of our favourite brides and show you what they wore to their special days. Find out what they have to say!

Ever since I can remember I wanted to wear my mother’s beautiful shaadi gharara on my wedding. It’s peachish-pink tissue with gold sacha work laid out in a jaal all over the gharara and dupatta. The shirt was a short Hyderabadi style half sleeved kurta with intricately worked antique gold braid edgings. Rano of Rano’s Heirlooms did an excellent job of enhancing the jora and elongating the dupatta with her trademark cutwork around the borders. I wore heirloom polki jewellery with the jora, my favourite piece being the antique Maggar earrings (three tiered, fish shaped).

My jora and jewellery both had a strong sense of old world charm with a modern edge that made the pieces very unique. Designed by Seher Tareen, the statement piece of the ensemble is the heavily embellished cut-work peplum jacket, which is structured & edgy, paired with a royal blue velvet lehnga, which has a flowing pattern of worked florals juxtaposed with waves of linear beading. The finishing touch is the trailing fouryard pewter dupatta in translucent tissue. I wore an art deco diamond and sapphire set and choker that my mother in law designed. It came together fantastically!

On Monday, one detail too many, and they may all spill out of your head. It’s fantastic that you have a new health routine, but it’s important to make your mental health a priority as well — and shouldering more anxiety than you can handle is not a good way to go. The way out of your own head on Wednesday is to focus on someone else’s needs. To calm down on Thursday and Friday, try to concentrate on the speed at which grass grows. Your endof-the-week introspection opposes the kind of weekend you’ll have: Full of action, surprises and surprising people.
The texture of your day on Monday feels very 19th century: Flattery, engagements, parks, art and charm may all figure in some way. The scene thusly set, it becomes clear by Tuesday that you are the hero in this tale. Wednesday is anything but dull. The emotional climax comes on Thursday and Friday — if your life were a movie, there would be a moment of strength, an argument or a tragedy, followed by joyful passion and, on Saturday, a conversation about marriage. Anyway, Sunday sends you back toward real life.
Every time you add up the numbers, you get a different sum. This is annoying. What you need is someone good at math. Assigning is essential at the beginning of the week — especially because Tuesday and Wednesday are going to distract you. Letting others handle things while you stroll through parks arm-in-arm with a certain someone is a smart tactic. Thursday and Friday, you find yourself making calculations again, although not of the mathematical kind: Emotional calculations. Your heart is nervous. Saturday you’re moving slowly, but by Sunday you’re speeding up.
Your mind is racing at the beginning of the week, and you still feel like you’re falling behind: Your world is moving full speed ahead. Nevertheless, you enjoy the frantic pace. If you get a spare moment, you might try to have a nice one-on-one with a coworker, but you might have to wait until Wednesday for a second even to catch your breath. Thursday and Friday, you’re worthless when it comes to making decisions, and on Saturday the slightest thing brings about a major personal crisis. On Sunday, regroup. Do something for yourself.

You can afford an expensive lunch on Monday, but an inexpensive lunch will leave you feeling happier and more satisfied. You’re more conservative than usual, but on Tuesday and Wednesday you’re also more social than usual — not a bad combination. You bring beautiful energy into a room. Romance figures strongly on Wednesday, but by Thursday and Friday, it’s at the farthest reaches of your mind. Your family is much more present. Someone lifts a rock for you on Saturday and a whole new world comes into view. Get back to your love life on Sunday. A coffee date, perhaps?
Now that your desk is tidy and a new award for outstanding performance is hanging on your office wall, what’s next? That’s the question on your mind on Monday. To what future projects shall you now apply your brilliance? Tuesday and Wednesday, you are bubbling over with ideas, but you’re set on making the next thing as deep and meaningful as you can. This would be a good week to solicit input from your friends — a wide variety of them. Thursday through Saturday, you’re lost in conversation, but family obligations on Sunday bring you back to solid ground.
You never know where the next great idea is going to come from. Be in listening mode on Monday, in every situation: when you’re sitting across the table from a friend, when you’re in a meeting for work, when a radio is playing somewhere in the background. Tuesday and Wednesday, your attention to the outside world inverts itself, and you find yourself the subject of everyone else’s interest (and, likely, their affection). But Thursday and Friday are colder days by comparison, more matterof-fact and professional. Money is the dominant theme on Saturday, but Sunday is about optimism and good deeds.
A small favor for a friend on Monday — something you barely even think about — will come back your way tenfold later in the week. In the meantime, Tuesday and Wednesday require patience. Decisions will be difficult, authority figures will be difficult, socializing will be difficult. But this is just a blip on the radar screen. By Thursday and Friday, the tide turns and suddenly you’re the luckiest person you know. Magnetism, energy and strength bolster your already formidable talents. Rebirth and regeneration are your themes on Saturday, and Sunday finds you taking risks.

The sidewalk may be smooth and clean — smooth enough to roller skate on clean enough to eat off — but what’s going on below ground? Is this path you’re on as stable as you think? Skepticism is useful at the beginning of the week. But don’t be so skeptical that others (wrongly) sense you judging them (this may happen on Wednesday). Thursday and Friday make for a slow end to the workweek. You feel funny about something, but it’s hard to put your finger on what. It will become clearer to you Saturday: It’s related to the tension between privacy and exposure. Don’t socialize until Sunday.
You are learning more about youknow-who every day, even on days when you don’t see each other. The only problem with not seeing each other, though, is that it encourages you to overanalyze everything. By midweek, you may have constructed an elaborate history of emotional deposits and withdrawals that frankly has little to do with the reality of your interactions with this person. So watch it. Calm down. Your late-in-the-week conviction that they are walking all over you may bear some truth, but broach the subject while granting the benefit of the doubt. Sunday is a lucky day.

Just because your boss is being difficult on Monday doesn’t mean you can take off after lunch and not come back. You have obligations to certain people. Thankfully, on Tuesday and Wednesday, your interactions with others are hugely rewarding. People are lavishing you with gifts. You are delirious with gratitude, which may explain why you’re mostly lost in your own thoughts on Thursday and Friday. Your imagination is active and you’re perfectly happy to be alone. By Saturday, you’re puzzling over the big picture, but Sunday you’re too busy playing games with friends to think much about anything else.
The most useful information may come from far, far away on Monday, via phone or email. Your spirits are lifted (the added benefit of being in touch with an old friend). Anything is possible — that’s the animating principle on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday and Friday, you’re so focused on your new projects that you’re able to separate out the white noise; some of your best thinking may happen in a crowded restaurant. Saturday, you detach from your social circle to such an extent that someone waves a hand in front of your face and says, ‘Hello, remember me?’ Sunday’s a good day to reconnect.
