THE GREEK HOLIDAY

NEHA PURI EXPLORES THE BEAUTY OF GREECE

I

t was exactly as I imagined it to be; large ancient stones towering the bleached and pallid pebbles, in stark contrast to the vast sea that lay ahead, a mix of aqua blue expanding to a deep turquoise so intensely mesmerizing. The arching sky was naturally in sync with the iridescence beneath having splashes of hues ranging from fuchsia to tangarine injected in it during sunset. However, I was to discover that there was much more to this paradise than it’s post card appearance. Greece is known for it’s ancient Gods, riveting culture, tzatziki dip, baklava drenched in honey and magnificent islands. Along with its narrow labyrinthine streets housing facades dressed in 19th century neoclassical design and architecture, it is also famous for it’s grande olympic stadiums. Allured by the charm of the country, my group of twelve friends and I decided to indulge in this enchanting experience, which turned out to be one of the most adventurous spring breaks ever. Get ready to explore this multifaceted country where myth and reality still live closely together.

This multifaceted country where myth and reality still live closely together.

Placed in the very centre of Athens, Hotel Titania was an ideal place for us to stay, circumvented with shopping centres and historical monuments. We had six days to digest the extensive history and luxuriate in their culture and so we let the divine city enrapture us.

places to vis it : Take one day to simply enjoy Delphi, a beautiful town near Athens which showcases ancient ruins, each piece delicately preserved in their colossal museums. Bask in the incandescent sun while floating on cobalt blue waters by taking a full day cruise. The cruise will travel you to different picturesque is46

lands like Hydra, Poros, Crete and Aegina, so allow the magic of the islands to gradually settle over you. A day trip to visit the Epidaurus Theatre, and the Lions' Gate at Mycenae in Argolis is a must. Trust me, climbing up those infinite amount of stairs will definitely be worth the scenic view. Take time out to explore Athens, a city embellished with numerous splendid monuments like the Parthenon on the Acropolis Hill and the Temple of Olympian Zeus. You cannot leave without visiting the Acropolis museum, where the ancient Greek civilization relives through some of the world's most formidable edifices. An experience I, person-

ally, will never forget was performing the 'syrtos'- a traditional folk dance, where I was swept off my feet by dancers veiled in flamboyant costumes, leaping into the air, doing mid-air somersaults, and incessant pirouettes. It supposedly signified cultural pride. It's not difficult to get lost in the winding streets that carry thousands of years of history, adorned by souvenir shops and small cafes, and I highly recommend doing so. Do all this, if you like, in a white toga, deftly synched around the waist with a gold metal belt, and a twined floral wreath around your head, and feel like one of those ancient Greek goddesses you've grown up hearing stories about.

food : Plaka, in Athens, is the perfect place to go to, for authentic Greek cuisine. The area consists of a plethora of restaurants offering the best dining experience. Select from the prodigious variety of olives, indulge in zesty souvlaki, baked Moussaka, crispy spankopita, and of course, the authentic Greek salad. Putting aside the traditional dishes, the nutella waffles at the Creperie at Galleria are a personal favourite. Devour the greek foods and always keep room for delicious desserts. Try the Turkish coffee at the local cafes, if you dare. So pack your togas, a few ounces of adventurous spirit, a large experimental appetite and your DSLR, and I am certain, that you will return from Greece with plenty of cherished memories and endless stories. The beauty of Aphrodite, the might of Zeus and the wit of Athena await you. Kalo taksidi!

ISFANDYAR ZAMAN So it’s been some time and I apologise, life well takes us places where we least expect to be and this spring, I decided to soak it all in. Around this time the Ball season is in full bloom in the western world, whilst Hollywood dollies itself up for the Oscar- the Viennese start perfecting their waltz. Though the Opera Ball at the Opera House is still where the big names go (this year was Kim Kardashian and Kofi Annan), the Bon Bon Ball is where people let loose. The sight of hundreds waltzing around though is lovely- no matter which venue you end up just make sure you have some proper Austrians in your crew (thanks Lisa, Claudio). If you are in Vienna, though completely cliché, the Sacher Tort at the Sacher Hotel is still to this day divine, the burger at the hipster spot Flatcher’s (the owner has a soft spot for Pakistanis so no reservations needed) is worth the trip, and the Danube still pulls in an eclectic crowd. Since we all have to do something cultural, head over to the Belvedere to soak in Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss, the painting does speak to you and even feels you up. 50

PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE

2014

As the skiing season is not more or less over, I do hope you were able to head to some Alps or Rockies for some last minute slopes. Sadly the Himalayas remain for the most brave of heart and though no mountain range in the world comes close to the beauty of our own, however the infrastructure does leave much to be desired. Speaking of our own northern areas, am sure by now most of you have heard about Shigar Fort Hotel, well just 2 hours up from it the Khaplu Palace hotel is also now fully functional. The views, the hospitality, the day trips to the numerous valleys, the hot springs by the Indian border and the divine Balti food make it much worth the unpredictable PIA plane that goes up there. In the rest of the World, there is has been so much news that it’s is just overload. First there was Crimea, I mean just the name of that peninsula sounds like highway robbery and that’s exactly what Putin did. Though I can’t really blame him, everyone else does whatever suits them flaunting every international treaty- the US attacks Iraq, the Israelis built settlement, the Syrians gas each other, a Chief Minister complicit of murder in Gujarat may just become prime minister so why can’t Russia play the same game? Though my only grudge is now the Yalta music festival will be in Russia and Russian visas are a pain. By now all have mostly forgotten about the Malaysian Airline saga, I think it was probably the Russians to distract media attention, however I do have heartfelt sympathies for the family members of the passengers. Moving over to South Korea, the ferry disaster is just another reminder that the Captain is not the last but the first to leave usually when things go south. Heading back to our home land, the infrastructure development is all the rage. We all know the Walton flyover was made in 72 days, however I heard rumbling from those belonging to other districts that the CM of Punjab needs to pay attention outside Lahore too. Till next time, and in the meantime please get your Polio vaccines and we likely won’t be able to travel anywhere now, maybe there will also be a vaccine for insanity in the near future.

DEEPAK PERWANI ALI XEESHAN

The Ali Xeeshan bridal outfit was an all white gharara and very very traditional. The net dupatta added an Indian touch in its own way and the outfit was not over loaded with embellishments. Gota work can only be seen on the gharara with a plain top perfect to accessorize with heavy jewellery! We find this to be a perfect outfit for the bride to wear on her Nikkah.

ASIFA AND NABEEL One of the very sophisticated looking outfits at BCW was this cream coloured Asifa Nabeel outfit. The designer duo has used a mix of plain and floral nets with a self coloured embroidery. With so much going on in the outfit it still manages to give a minimalistic and tasteful bridal look. Absolutely perfect for a wedding reception!

Who would have thought a black dupatta for a bridal outfit would make for a very joyous and happy looking bride. Well Deepak Perwani proved left us surprised with this gorgeous show stopper lehenga on Neha. The monochrome blouse is heavily embroidered but is paired with a light weight off-white lehegna and a big daring black dupatta. Tt can perfectly be paired with both, gold and silver or diamond accessories.

ÉLAN Nothing says ethereal the way Elan does. Elan displayed two outfits at the Power House of Fashion, and both displayed a brides dream come true. The maroon one gave the feeling of a wedding day and the white displayed a bride at her Wedding Reception. The white was our absolute favourite as it vividly displayed the delicate, elusive and pale look most brides go for on their Valima day.

FARAZ MANAN Faraz Manan has really upped his game. Not too long ago were we wooed away by his ‘Nawaabi’ collection, but this time his “Istanbul” collection, which displayed an east, meets west combo, left the audience absolutely dazed. This white heavily embellished, bodyhugging outfit was one of our favourites. The feminine silhouette is extremely flattering for any petite bride on her big day.

HSY

Any brides wardrobe is incomplete without that ‘mukaish’ outfit. HSY’s white heavily embellished mukaish lehenga was a undoubtedly a class apart. The entire outfit showed barely any skin and looked extremely chic as it included lots of drapes with the use of two dupattas instead of one. This outfit screams elegance and grace!

KAMIAR ROKNI

The House of Kamiar Rokni gave us an old school vibe to their bridal ensembles, while being completely modern at the same time. The use of rich colours such as maroon and purple gave this outfit a very royal look. The use of Gota adds just the right amount of bling this lehenga needs. A bride could easily feel like an empress in this outfit.

NIDA AZWER Nida Azwer’s ‘Kothari Parade II” collection was an extension of her previous inspiration, the history of the subcontinental culture. She has put together a variety of different fabrics such as brocades nets and French Chantilly laces and used a colour palette of rust, blue and red. Her collection definitely consisted some classic outfits with a vintage style, all on up to date silhouettes.

NOMI ANSARI This Nomi Ansari was absolutely breathtaking on the ramp. After seeing so many heavily embellished lehngas, it was very refreshing to see this gorgeous red jacket paired with white embroidered cigarette pants and just the right amount of peek-a-boo going on with the cropped orange blouse.

SANA SAFINAZ Even though the dynamic duo displayed only two outfits at the show, at least one was bound to blow our hearts away. The full sleeve hot pink choli with sparkling gold work and a mix of dull and shimmery lehenga, accented with a dark purple dupatta was an ideal combination for Mehndi brides!

TENA DURRANI One of the very recognized names in bridal wear these days is none other than Tena Durrani. This outfit from Tena Durrani has made it to our Top 10 list because we absolutely love the use of these three different colours put together. The pastel shades would make any summer bride look cool and composed and the floral embroidery adds to the happy girlish mood of this outfit.

ZAHEER ABBAS

The “Jashne Janaan collection was one full of royal and bright colours. He showed very realistic yet different bridal wear which was definitely a treat to the eyes. The collection was indeed a wholesome one as it ranged from straight shirts to Anarkali Angarkhas with long vibrant dupattas as well as a good share of cholis and lehengas. W loved it!

Mehreen rohan shoaib Being a bride is possibly one of the most difficult processes one goes through! We plan our wedding day and what we will wear years before the actual wedding. I wanted to be different, yet extremely traditional and colourful on my mehndi, and what’s better than bareek gota work when you think of going traditional. Button&Bows made my mehndi outfit bright, since I wanted to stand out on my mehndi and deviate from wearing the typical mehndi colours. The ensemble consisted of a cobalt blue and shocking pink color combo for my anarkali shirt and dupatta, with a light green churidar. I was color block perfect, and stood out against the decor too. This dupatta, was so rich that I immediately knew it will be timeless and will go onto future generations with its gorgeous detailed gota work and stunning borders.

Ayesha-Somaya were my saviors. The designer duo name that automatically brings a smile to my face were my choice for my main day. I wanted to be a top to bottom decked up bride, which oozed out tradition, with old school glamour, and make everyone feel I have landed from the era of Mughals. Shaheen Saeed’s makeup and Ayesha-Somaya made a classic combo. I wore the most gorgeous straight shirt with kora dabka and diamonte filled work on a huge neck area, with vertical stripes of work down my front, the back with a rust jamavaar deep neck and baazubundhs and doris down both my arms. The intricately zardozi worked farshi gharara, and 6 gaz long dupatta with a worked border, and my standout factor of the ivory contemporary worked jacket, offset my maroon ensemble and was the perfect match with my pure polki jewellery. I felt no less than a Queen.

Ayesha-Somaya clothes have the correct amount of bling factor, along with the traditional and contemporary both in harmony working side by side. I shone bright like a diamond with their teal, gold and silver outfit. The dupatta was a gold misoori never ending dupatta with teal cutwork borders, and I have never seen anything more beautiful. Natasha Salon’s makeup, with their 100watt dewy skin, pink cheeks and lips made me all sparkly yet different from my Baraat event.

What should you do on Monday and Tuesday? As little as possible. Lose yourself in your own thoughts. Ask for extra time with any paperwork that requires your signature. Take naps if you want. You’ll burn enough calories on Wednesday and Thursday — exciting days, both — for an entire week’s worth of adventure. Friday and Saturday (when patience and permanence are major themes) return you to a slower pace, but, again, not for long: Everything is in fast-forward on Sunday. This includes your love life; if you’re single, well, expect developments.

Your friends are tremendous people, and they’d love to help. If something is getting you down, Monday and Tuesday offer you plenty of opportunities to do something about that. Get that weight off your shoulders; open up. Wednesday and Thursday you’ll be too busy rushing around — uncharacteristically so — to have heartfelt conversations with your pals. But Friday and Saturday, you find yourself effortlessly relating to your friends. Your love life is also effortless these days. Someone says something incredibly flattering to you on Sunday.

The questions you have about your career aren’t going to go away — the current quandary is just the most recent manifestation of a very basic issue, so don’t stress the details. Focus on being creative (and enjoying yourself!) and pretty much everything else will click into place (eventually). Wednesday and Thursday, seek the advice of close friends — and the occasional acquaintance (why not?) — and then Friday and Saturday, show the world what you’re made of. Sunday isn’t a good day for getting things done, but you’ll meet a lot of people.

Your mind wanders on Monday and Tuesday, and ends up in the funniest places. This is, believe it or not, productive. These daydreams make for swell anecdotes as well. You’re more in tune with others than you have been in a while, although Wednesday and Thursday, as social as you feel like being, you’re better off doing your own thing. (If you do end up being social, take care to think before speaking.) Friday and Saturday bring word of good news in the family realm, and as your mood brightens this weekend, you find yourself being more extroverted and impulsive than usual.

Your instincts are in top form at the start of the week, and so are your listening skills. Combined, they’ll get you out of any tricky situation. As you gear up to make a big decision, count on your friends to bring to light aspects of your current circumstance you might not have considered before. You enjoy learning new things — even when they’re new (and potentially embarrassing) things about yourself. Friday and Saturday, a ton of attention comes your way for something you never expected to be a big deal, and you spend the rest of the weekend beaming.

You never know what’s going on in someone else’s life. If you have the impulse to criticize a friend on Monday or Tuesday, consider that you might not have the full story. Wednesday and Thursday, as happy as you may be, relations with coworkers are strained, and you may end your days in a state of frustration, but you don’t need to let work issues ruin your end-of-the-week plans. Friday and Saturday, you and you-know-who are more compatible than ever. Dinner Saturday night is the highlight of the weekend, although Sunday has the potential to be great, too.

Even while you’re juggling a million other things, you have your eye on the world around you. And when you see something beautiful, you point it out to your friends. You’re a pleasure to be around these days, which explains why, midweek, someone is all over you. It may not even be a romantic thing; it could be a business thing. You have the power to make Thursday either wonderful or terrible — it pretty much depends on you — but Friday and Saturday are going to be amazing no matter what you do. Magnetism, duets and kindness figure strongly. Sunday, your energy is through the roof.

Monday and Tuesday are dreamy and wonderful; the dream motif is especially apt — you merely have to wish for something to be true and suddenly it is. Romantically, you’ve never been better off. It’s rare for the fantasy realm to so perfectly impose on real life. Wednesday and Thursday constitute something of a reality check. Not that they’re bad days, but you will have to lift a finger, sadly. Friday and Saturday, all is not peaches and cream with regard to your love life, nor is all ruined. Deal with the issues at hand. Then, on Sunday, take it easy.

You suddenly have little patience for other people’s values. Not that you don’t appreciate other opinions; it’s just that you’re long overdue for taking stock of what’s important to you. Something to consider Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday launches you into much more abstract terrain. Advanced ideas, humanitarianism at large, the discovery of world events you knew little about — this is what’s on your mind through Thursday. Friday and Saturday are more mundane and familyoriented (not that families aren’t beautiful and fascinating in their own right), and Sunday is unexpectedly romantic.

Treat yourself on Monday. Part of figuring out what you want is getting what you want and seeing if you like it. So, do some research. On Tuesday, you begin work on a new project that might transform your outlook on everything. Wednesday and Thursday are less clear days, relatively — camouflage and clouds figure metaphorically — but a home-cooked meal on Friday night returns you to solid footing. Saturday is a day of soft pillows, singing birds, handwritten letters and romance. Sunday, a perfect day for sleeping in, is more of the same.

Listening to someone tell a story from their past on Monday gets you thinking about your own emotionally rich history. Look how far you’ve come! The challenges you face right now are nothing compared with the challenges you’ve already surmounted. Wednesday and Thursday, nothing can get in the way of your unbelievable talents (plus, expect a romantic subplot to occupy your evenings) and Friday and Saturday’s demands on you are very doable. Flex your skills as a master communicator and all will be fine. Sunday is lots of talk but surprisingly little action.

There are many ways to express yourself. Look into a new tactic on Monday and Tuesday. Writing a poem? Writing a song? Finding an original way to communicate with you-know-who will not only help you feel more connected to this person, it will flatter them. Wednesday and Thursday, your creativity won’t be much use in solving a career or family problem. But Friday and Saturday were made for creativity — as well as romance. After a sequence of entertaining activities on Saturday (a hike? a walk through town? a drive through the mountains?), spend Sunday telling this person what you really feel.
