and not OTT at all. I like the morning breakfast area and the gaudy wrought iron lights but not the fake grass outside. Still, it is truly the first boutique hotel in Lahore and I wish the venture the best. However, heading out of Lahore by any of the Arab carriers remains a pain, the airport at 3 am is jam packed and takes hours to check in so suggest your brace yourself for it. Come early or risk it by coming right in the end. For a modern airport, the fact that it can’t handle 3 planes taking off at same time is sad.

ISFANDYAR ZAMAN The travelling bug hits us often and when it does it is hard to get over it. First up on the cards was a jaunt back to Lahore. From Bucharest, it was Turkish to Lahore. Though the lounge at Ataturk is one of the most divine you will find (rain showers, racing train tracks, golf range, billiards, endless supply of Baklava)- the plane that Turkish flies on its routes to Pakistan is reminiscent of the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century, crumbling and full of promise yet not delivering. Please Turkish Air, I really want to avoid flying any of the Arab airlines so please spruce up the planes you fly to my homeland. There is a lot of love between the two nations and I hope one day your will take over PIA. If you do end up flying Turkish then do plan a stopover in Istanbul and if you have just a few hours in the city then I would suggest head over to the Gulluoglu by the Galata bridge and devour some fresh Boregi (the spinach and spice one is the best). It is the most heavenly breakfast ever (right Mrs. K?) right up there with malai with honey pistachios you get in Diyarbakir on the Syrian border. Back in Lahore, the tiny Shawarma joint called Nisa Sultan is making quiet the waves. So in case you didn’t step out into Istanbul ,head to this outpost of Turkish meat. Also the Nishat, which is Iqra’s brainchild, had a breathtaking décor. Firstly, they blended in the building next door perfectly, inside the layout is just right 44

Over in Europe, Germany remains the place to discover. If you have not been then be sure to familiarize yourself with Hamburg. It is Germanys second biggest city yet totally of the radar screen. It has the highest concentration of wealth and more importantly the highest concentration of models in Germany (thanks Max for all the facts). Is it needed to state the obvious? Wealth follows the beautiful, or wait is it the other way around? Let me give Claudia Schiffer a call and find out for the sake of humanity this age old question. In Hamburg the hotels around the Lake (Justine Timberlake was just there for his 20/20 tour and probably holes up at the Kempenski) are the place to stay however there are very funky design hotels in the hip districts, the 25 hour hotel is one that stands out. Maybe by no coincidence, I ended up having a lot of burger in Hamburg, the burger lab is an alternative experimental place, Otto burger has the perfect terrace but the winner remains the outpost of the Berlin based Byrd burgers. Make sure to put on your running shoes and run the 4 miles around the lake, this is worth is just to take in the opulence of the city. The Marktzeit in Der Fabrik and the Schanzen flea market are also worth the trip to do some shopping or just rumble through late century junk. The city which looks all civilized in the day, dons a hedonistic coat at night. The Reeperbahnhas an assortments of all sorts of vice, and the Herberstrasse is world famous though I always found such places sad. If you do end up in the city then I would encourage you to spend time more at the sofa bar which is and edgy place with great music and well lots of sofas, the Goldfischglas and the pony (thanks Ailin) are also great scenes. Germany is big on music and the Bunker, which is well in a Bunker, is a great place to dance the night away. If you are lucky to get some sun then bike around the city and be sure to dig into the HafenCity, which is large scale urban redevelopment project that has turned old docklands into an urban oasis. As summer is upon us at the very least make plans to travel around, studies say that anticipation of a trip causes more happiness then the trip itself. Sadly, my predictions about needing polio certifcations came out to be true. Lastly the latest on the Geo, Venna Malik and blasphemy debacle my take is who needs Star Trek, when we have our own science fiction episodes daily. We go where no man goes, deeper into the realms of darkness.

W
hile popular Facebook pages such as ‘Humans of New York’ (and other similar pages) enjoy their fair share of popularity on the internet, a humble educationist in Lahore decided to honour inspiring Pakistanis via his very own, and relatively new, Facebook page - ‘My Awesome Journey.’
High-spirited and chirpy, Usman Aziz’s energy is infectious – it’s almost like he’s glugged down ten cans of Red Bull and is ready to take the world head-on. Having done three Masters (one locally and two from the US), Aziz states that he launched his Facebook page with the sole aim of bringing to light 50

inspiring stories of Pakistanis. In an interview with Paperazzi, Aziz speaks about his project, the most inspiring interview he recently conducted and his future plans. What inspired you to launch ‘My Awesome Journey?’ I wanted to meet new and amazing people in the city to talk about their sorrows, joys, and life lessons, etc. We have some extremely interesting people in our community doing awesome stuff you know! I had thought about doing this about 8 years ago but it never really panned out. Only recently did I think about going ahead with
it after I had to face an unfortunate incident in my life. It was then that I realized that I wanted to see how people sustain themselves in their life journeys, when they see their world collapsing right infront of them. Hence ‘My Awesome Journey’ was launched in late January, this year. I think life teaches you great lessons and what better way to learn about these lessons than from those around you. It really helps. This led me to start the project. In addition, I also wanted to project a softer image of Pakistan, unlike the nonsense the media puts out. Who was the first person you interviewed? The same day that I launched my page, I interviewed Haroon Khalid (the Author of ‘The White Trail’) and Omair Rana (the Actor/Director). Haroon Khalid spoke openly about his drug addiction and the battle he had to fight to overcome it. It was amazing because he was open and honest about it. Omair Rana believed in my project from the beginning. He was kind enough to invite me to his place talk about his life. It was an enriching experience. What has the response been like so far? AMAZING. I am meeting people I never thought I’d meet! I am appreciated and I love that. I am making tons of new friends and having the time of my life. It is very time consuming and keeps me super busy, but I love it. I think everyone has a great story that must be shared. You have over 3,000 likes so far, and the list is growing, do you have any plans for your page in the near future? I started the page with zero expectations remain having no expectations. I hope great things for it though, however I take each day as it comes. I want
to enjoy the present as I have dwelled too much in the past and worried too much of the future at times. I refuse to do that anymore. Who is the one person you'd LOVE to interview for ‘My Awesome Journey?’ While I want to interview as many people as I can, two people I’d love to meet and interview are Mrs. Nasreen Kasuri, the COO of the Beaconhouse School System, and Mr. Kasim Kasuri (the CEO of the same school). Because I am an educationist, I think we could learn a lot from both of them regarding their lives, their careers and education in Pakistan. Have you had any interesting experiences while interviewing your subjects? Every interview has been such a unique experience for me – it’s amazing how people open up and have such profound knowledge. It is really beautiful to be honest. I’ve had many interesting experiences with my subjects - however the one which truly stands out was when I recently interviewed Muhammad Sabir - I was crying throughout the interview (and kept apologizing) – but his story made me realize that we take our easy life for granted. What's the one thing you've learned while interviewing Pakistani’s for ‘My Awesome Journey?’ That Pakistani’s are empathetic human beings. The ones I have met choose to keep bravely moving forward.
