BY TALIA MIRZA

Ramadan special for Marketers A few years ago, it was good to be a journalist. News channels popped up right, left and centre. Karachi, of course, is our media capital, and the only big channels to this day that also have offices in Lahore are news channels. Money was even tentatively invested in English news channels, which by now are long gone, but had all the promise of large empires when they started off, Geo English and Express English, to name two. A few years into this global age, and we have sharpened up a bit more. Now, it's good to be a marketer. (and a political talk show host. Or a TV evangelist. But more on that later) Big business has realised it's intelligent to invest in marketing. Our brightest men and women are no longer gravitating towards computer sciences, journalism, or the law. No, they are brand managers. They are digital marketers. They are marketing heads. Business and strategy is no longer a vague, ambiguous branch of corporations. It is THE branch. Take a look around your city. Turn on the TV. Tune into our desi network. News, political talk shows, morning shows. And ads, before and after. Also, direct marketing and digital marketing are safely on the rise; these are not trends that will fade like our English news channels. Yes, it's good to be a marketer right now. The people who invested in marketing degrees are no longer cast aside as having studied fluff. The MBA graduates are thanking their own sagacity at having studied something that will land them in a lucrative field. We live in a poor country, but some people are making money, yes, and it's not just our corrupt politicians. These people are those bright men and women, working hard, the ones with the street smarts and know how, graduating from our best universities, being trained by big corporations to make them more money. These bright young men and women, they deal with people all over the country; they know who wants what, where what sells, how far the coverage of their brands is. Which segment of the population prefers their soaps, shampoos, chips, detergents, milk, soft drink, bottled water... and the TV shows they sponsor. There is value in knowing your market. Your target segment-- what schools their children go to, what kind of cars they drive, if they have any cars, what their incomes are, if they use smartphones, have facebook accounts, what they like to watch on TV. Corporations pay handsomely for this research. No one is marketing blindly anymore. 44

PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE

2014

So when Amir Liaqat set up his last year's Ramadan special, for some reason all the big corporations flocked to sponsor his show. These bright men and women thought it was a worthy investment. He gave away their products, all the while increasing his ratings and giving brands publicity. Win win situation. Geo was wise to gather the poor, the needy, largely uneducated and conservatively religious segment of the population as seated audience for this show, and they had an instant hit. 'Inaam ghar' and specifically, Amir Liaquat's ramadan transmission, was acclaimed by BBC, CNN, Google, as well as Arab and Indian media for its high ratings. Big brands and media groups constructed this personality for the masses, and the masses love him. He has now been put in the list of 500 most influential Muslim personalities. Big corporations helped him all the way. This year he is the president of Express Media Group, the same group, who once launched Express English, and flew in experienced professionals from CNN to train their employees. Well, that somewhat liberal initiative failed, with educated, intelligent young men and women presenting their ideas on an excellent platform. But I guess making Amir Liaquat the president will definitely pay off. A lucrative decision made by intelligent, highly educated, well exposed people, no doubt.

Ironic, isn't it? As it so happens, most of their offices are all in Karachi, where Shia genocide is a daily kind of thing. Somehow, it's kind of hard to get used to when people you know are being attacked and murdered around the clock. Yes, even people from the big corporations whose brands frequently sponsored Amir Liaquat's shows. The TV evangelist who once famously justified Shia genocide, whilst addressing Shias and advising them to participate in 'Sunni' celebrations to avoid being murdered, has been transformed into a media giant all in the space of one year. There was also that one boo boo where someone recorded him while he made fun of a rape victim with his famous one liner, "Bohat nazuk suratehaal hay". Whatever, right? Let's cut the poor man a break, I mean, he gets excellent ratings and appeals directly to our target market. Ironic then, when our brightest men and women, then complain about the state of the country, all the while helping such an 'ethical' TV evangelist to gather a worldwide fan following. Yes, big corporations are run very efficiently. Some of the coolest, most intelligent people I know, who work the hardest, market for them. The most coveted jobs are in these 'big corporations', let's just call them BGs for now. Big, giant corporations. Pakistan truly is a nation overflowing with smart people who know where it's at, and exactly what and how much it is. But somewhere along the way, our educators, our parents, our families and friends, forgot to instil something in our best and brightest: a social conscience. These men and women, as well as the owners and leaders of these media giants and BGs, have great potential (and the moolah) to influence the trends of our country. They put money behind one talk show host.... And well. They can create a big bang. Or a series of bangs. As these business men, strategists and marketers well know, all ideas are equal. If you take one and somehow turn it into a viral trend, it's not just fun for everyone involved, but heck, you can actually make money out of it! Gosh darn. Who'd have known? Here I propose such an idea. The marketing trends as of now are well known and highly predictable, but also a rule that business men and marketers live by: what is new, and BIG, clicks with the masses. So how about a whole new direction for marketing? Marketing.... With a social conscience. Well, I'm just a silly ole gal, what do I know, but if I was just such a marketing head in a BG, I would aim to differentiate my marketing strategy from everyone else. Set my brands apart. That frequent marketing catch phrase, give people the kind of brand experience that can 'change their lives'. Make them feel the brand cares, really cares, knows best, trust, dependability, family. ("Nestle to mera chaa chaa hay, Coke mera taaya, and Procter and Gamble my susraal") The Ramadan specials are pouring in with their charitable, patriotic packaging... as yet, it remains just a packaging. Patriotic, kindly, religious ads are on the rise, specially in this time of the year. Yet, not one big brand has backed up their message of caring, and kindliness, and 'we will change your life for the better' with real action. If I was that one marketing head, I'd say.... Let's show them some action. Someone else would say, but no one would notice. I'd say,

let's market our socially responsible campaigns. Let's sponsor education, health and awareness based initiatives, and then market the fact that we are sponsoring them. Let's set our brands apart. Let's show the Pakistani masses we care. Good quality products, right? Let's be that one hot chick in a sea of hot chicks who doesn't wear too much make up and follow fashion trends blindly; the one hot chick who like, stands out because she has substance. Bad analogy, but... let's translate it into brand-speak. That one brand who goes minimalistic--- like all the best brands really do, you know. They stand for one impressive word, one culture. Google. Apple... Go minimalistic, add meaning to people's lives.... Another catchphrase, to 'add meaning to people's lives'--- all marketers strive to convince people that their brand is adding meaning to their lives. But let's really add some meaning.... and point out that other brands, well, are not living up to that promise. In this country, the field is wide open for charitable marketing. Are you a BG who makes hundreds of products for the masses? Do you make two kinds of detergents, three kinds of soaps, each used by a different segment of our population? Are you an intelligent BG that knows which part of your different target markets goes to what kind of school? Or if they get an education at all? BGs are BGs because they make things that all of Pakistan uses, not just the lucky 4 or 5 percent. The challenge is to change the lives of your customers. Directly. So do it! Show them why they should trust you. Make having a conscience the new in thing-- it's guaranteed to be a profitable approach, a trend that has worked all over the globe, and like all other trends, will eventually come here too. Look at the Ted X platform, look at Harpo productions (Oprah's company)... the socially conscientious approach, that combines words with actions and long term initiatives, is good for business! It's just a question of who does it first in Pakistan. Talk about a whole new marketing approach. A marketing revolution. That will pay back immensely, if you market your marketing. Set yourself apart, with real, socially conscientious actions. So BGs, sponsor schools that need the money (and not just political talk shows or TV evangelists). Sponsor, or initiate education programs. Ally yourself with, or start initiatives that donate to hospitals in poorer areas. Turn your marketing campaigns into awareness raising campaigns. You have the money, the platforms, and people would love you for it. They would believe in your patriotic marketing campaigns. There is such a large scope for social change, and social work in Pakistan. Use it to make your brands look good. Putting 'Ramadan Mubarik' in Arabic script on your billboards, and using theme songs and catch phrases that echo the harangued and rotting concept of 'Hum hain Pakistani, zindabad" yes, even with a hashtag before it, BGs, (wink wink) is simply not permissible anymore. Your customers, the masses, are jaded. The iron is hot... better strike it. Use our jaded-ness to your benefit. Wow us with how much you really are #humhaypakistani. Good luck! 2014

alyzeh rahim Being a bride is possibly one of the most difficult processes one goes through! We plan our wedding day and what we will wear years before the actual wedding. Meticulous planning goes into each look from the colour combinations and embellishment of the outfits to the jewellery, hair and makeup. Here we feature some of our favourite brides and show you what they wore to their special days. Find out what they have to say!

I am wearing Zara Shahjahan’s dramatic floral lengha in powder blue from her true love collection, the top is actually tucked inside the lengha, giving a high waisted skirt feel, and I opted for a bright pink dupatta. Jewellery is the same as what my mom wore to one of her functions. My hair and make up is by Zamin at Nabila’s salon. I wasn’t even going to get my make up done for my mehndi but absolutely love the skill that the make up artists at Nabila’s have. I am also wearing a really fun floral and diamond right by Sherezad.

Bunto Kazmi’s work is most certainly exquisite and timeless and was the perfect choice for my baraat outfit. I went for a very unusal colour combination- ivory with a candy orange dupatta. The bottom was a traditional farshe gharara. The best thing about this outfit is that it’s very wearable, which a lot of bridal’s aren’t. My make up was done by the super talented, Shamain. She gave me a very natural peachy look, with my hair in a side bun and an orangey peach pout. I looked high and low for jewellery that I liked, and finally, I had a look back on all the sets I had seen, and decided to get a design that Huma carried with slightly bigger diamonds, as most sets these days have dust diamonds that are tiny 1-2 pointer diamonds. My stunning palm bracelet was designed by Shiraz Sami and I carried a crystal Butler and Wilson clutch and wore silver/gold YSL tributes.

My valima outfit was made by Tena Durrani. I opted for an extremely traditional ‘Jodha Akbar’ style look, so Tena and I sat for ages picking the colour combination, as I wanted 3 different colours, two out of which had to be red and orange. Tena suggested a gorgeous mustard shade and it looked phenomenal, the work on the clothes up close is divine with semi precious stones all over. I wore 3 different traditional sets with this outfit- a tikkah and a jhumar, given to my by my in laws. I carried a crystal Judith Leiber clutch and wore YSL shoes. My hair and make up were done by Leena Ghani, who is immensely talented and she gave me a smokey eye which is something I rarely ever do myself and a bright red pout! My hair was left open with slight waves. This was actually one of my favourite looks from my wedding!

planes, trains & automobiles

Travelling is great fun! You get to explore a new place meet new people and get wiser! Whether you like to travel alone or with stories and experiences. We wanted to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our new section planes trains and automobiles. Tell us about your favourite or one of your favourite destination spots. Where did you choose to go and why? I have many favorite places but one of my most recent trips and favourite destinations to visit is St Tropez in the South of France (also love Cannes and Monaco). I love St Tropez because it’s a small beach town with beautiful old architecture and tiny cobblestone streets. The people are very friendly, there’s great nightlife and more importantly the food is great! Who did you travel with? I travelled with my husband, sister, and her two-year-old son. We planned the trip about a month before, my sister and I know the South of France well and have amazing memories there so it’s always nice to go back together. My husband loves France in general and my little nephew is the world’s best and cutest two year old to take on a trip.

travel diaries

Where did you stay? We stayed at Hotel Le Byblos, it’s perfectly located and the staff is polite and accommodating, and they’re absolutely wonderful to kids. In Cannes, we stayed at the Majestic and in Monaco we were at the Monte-Carlo Bay. What are the best shopping spots there? There are so many little shops and boutiques in the cute streets of St Tropez that sell beautiful sandals and kaftans that are made locally. One of my must-go spots is a jewelry store called Trinity on Rue Gènèral Allard, which is where all shops are, it has the cutest bracelets, in the summer time I love collecting little bracelets on my wrist from my travels. By the harbor there’s also some cute bracelet stands. The Hermes, Chanel and Dior boutiques are really pretty, some of the high-end designers sometimes have customized pieces for their St Tropez stores so it’s always nice to find

travel diaries travel diaries

Suggest some amazing restaurants there? I love French bakeries and cafes so in the morning it’s nice to walk around and pick a spot to get breakfast from and our Hotel (Le Byblos) did a good poolside breakfast. For lunch Le Club 55 is a really nice upscale place right on the beach in Ramatuelle and you must book in advance or know someone who can get you a reservation because it gets very busy during the summer. Place de Lices is another place you can explore for lunch and dinner spots. We loved the Italian food at Café Milano and the nutella crepe at Mija Crèpe is to die for, located in Place de Lices. Near the port, there’s a restaurant called L’opera that is good but my favorite dinner spot is definitely Villa Romana.

travel diaries

Finally, any tips? Most people speak English in St Tropez, so asking questions and getting around is not difficult, they take credit cards just about everywhere but it’s always a good idea to carry some cash. Explore the town online before you go, read articles and ask friends who have been so you know where you want to go and you can make all the necessary bookings and arrangements. Definitely rent a car which you can pre book from Enterprise and collect at Nice Airport, the drive to St Tropez in no traffic is about an hour.

travel diaries

travel

Suggest places for a perfect night out. There’s a lot of fun you can have if you’re planning to party in St Tropez, there’s White 1921 for drinks and St Tropez’s most famous night club VIP room which I personally don’t like but it’s worth checking out. Villa Romana is a really fun restaurant

Tell us about the sights no one should miss out on St Tropez is a really small town its very easy to get around and see the sites, if you’re there over the weekend I would recommend you to wake up early and visit the Saturday market in Place de Lices. The beach parties are all really well known and fun, so check out Bagatelle and Niki Beach.

travel diaries

something you probably won’t get anywhere else. Marinette Dècoration is a little furniture store that has really nice things for the home, which my sister and I absolutely love shopping at.

to go to in the evening and my favorite club is Les Caves du Roy, which is located in the hotel we were staying at, Le Byblos. St Tropez is well known to be the center of cruise companies so you can charter a yacht and a party on it, or spend the day doing water sports and sunbathing.

You have a goal in mind big time on Monday. Be careful about trampling on others to get there — it’s bad for your karma! Around Tuesday and Wednesday, you’re more of an idea person rather than an action go-getter. Get in cahoots with someone who thinks like you do for double the brainpower (and double the fun, too). Then after all that conscious thought, your subconscious has a message for you at the end of the workweek. Write down those dreams and tune into those visions. This weekend, toss the schedule aside and see what allures you from moment to moment.

If you’ve been thinking about getting out of town, go ahead and firm up those plans on Monday when the stars smile on future journeys. Tuesday and Wednesday bring some unusual energy your way, perhaps in the form of a work or a personal challenge. This could be a bend-or-break situation — which will you do? After this, fun with friends (or a romantic interest) is in order at the end of the workweek. Those who know and love you best energize you, and vice versa. And this weekend you just might be impetuous, spontaneous and ready to dive into something new.

If you’re confused or indecisive, don’t expect a sudden flash of insight on Monday. Around Tuesday and Wednesday, however, if you apply yourself, you’re likely to experience the dawning of a useful point of view. To prompt it, consider the most outlandish of options and seek out advice from an odd source. An email, a text or other communique could be misunderstood at the end of the workweek; beware of assumptions now. When the weekend comes, your feelings will come across beautifully.

Playing hooky or working from home might not be a bad idea on Monday because your regular routine may present some irregular issues now. Around Tuesday and Wednesday be sure to direct negative feelings appropriately. You don’t want to end up tangling with your boss when your relationship’s the source of your frustration — or vice versa. But spread the good stuff around. By the end of the workweek, the stars are sending plenty of mojo your way. You’ll click with others now in a most satisfying way. This weekend, do what it takes to truly unwind.

Wanna make a good impression on Monday? It’s easy — make it all about them. They’ll think you’re the cat’s pajamas (accurately, of course). Around Tuesday and Wednesday, somebody’s quirks may make you crazy, but even you can admit you’ve got a few of your own. Try to loosen up or laugh it off. Your work or personal priorities require attention at the end of the workweek. The most appealing possibilities may not ultimately satisfy you. This weekend, almost anything’s fun, so why not try something entirely different?

On Monday, fit in some fun — a little flirtation, a quick coffee with a friend, whatever it takes to kick the week off right. Around Tuesday and Wednesday, you have the tenacity to apply yourself to a task or situation, but then again, if you think more freely first, an entirely new and improved approach may present itself. Don’t overlook esoteric ideas. Try saying ‘I hear what you’re saying’ at the end of the workweek even if you’re thinking ’You’re a total wingnut.’ You just might change your mind. Watch your wallet and any intertwined finances this weekend.

If you find yourself dragging a bit on Monday, consider why you’re feeling this way. You’ll want to have your emotional state sorted out by Tuesday and Wednesday. Expect some pretty spectacular energy from the stars, including a possible romantic interlude. Your knack for ‘getting’ others is hot now. Don’t expect big results. You might be disappointed at the end of the workweek, but smaller plans will go rather nicely. As for the weekend, find opportunities to cooperate and compete. Have some fun — create something or play a game, one-on-one or in a group.

You’re a people person and super aware of opportunities on Monday, so seize this day big time! Around Tuesday and Wednesday, family and/ or household matters should be a priority. A little maintenance of your relationships and surroundings now prevents issues later. Then it’s time to leave mundane stuff (mostly) behind and stretch that imagination at the end of the workweek. Think big, think bold, think beautiful — and think romance! This weekend, look for common ground rather than conflict. Being the one to make the first overture feels fantastic.

If being ‘on’ on Monday is essential, consider hitting the gym to get your blood pumping, stopping for more coffee or both. If possible, delay bigger, better agenda items until Tuesday and Wednesday when the stars serve you some electric, inspiring stuff, and (bonus) give you natural allure and extra shine. What do you want now? Go for it! At the end of the workweek, it may seem like a hassle, but confirm plans, do the math and so forth; otherwise things are liable to go awry. As for the weekend? It looks great for self-discovery and possibly some revelations about others, too.

Why be a martyr on Monday when a friend or coworker’s happy to help? If you feel funny asking, arrange for a mutually beneficial trade. Around Tuesday and Wednesday, fuse your imagination and your intellectual side for amazing results. Some free-form thought might give rise to surprising next steps for your relationship, career or life at large. Be glad you’re you on Thursday and Friday, and be ready for additional appreciation from those around you, too. You’re just extra great (and extra hot) now. This weekend, get to the bottom of a puzzling situation.

A penny saved is a penny you can spend on something bigger and better later on Monday. Around Tuesday and Wednesday, you have a bright, shiny quality that attracts others; your genuine interest in them keeps ‘em around. Don’t forget to share your latest odd fascination. At the end of the workweek, it’s a good thing your head is securely attached. You’re prone to lose most everything else, including track of time at a crucial moment if you’re not careful. A great date or an outing with friends this weekend might involve a game — wanna watch or play?

Hop out of bed early on Monday, and make the most of the limitless possibilities the stars are sending your way. By Tuesday and Wednesday, you’re busy refining a scheme or looking for an alternative approach to a certain situation — good ideas both. The imaginative oomph you need, however, might not arrive until the end of the workweek. You’re able to come up with all sorts of things now, especially in cahoots with someone super. Balance work or projects and play this weekend — too much of one throws you off big time now.
