SANAM CHAUDHRY TALKS ABOUT FASHION PAKISTAN BY NEHA PURI
How has your experience been working as the chairperson of Fashion Pakistan, so far? My experience to date has been extremely insightful; more like a learning process. It has been a refreshing mix of education and exploration of new prospects. Nonetheless, never as of yet have I experienced a dull moment. Everything has been active and very alive.
Where do you see Fashion Pakistan in five years? We are very competitive to begin with. So, on that, I see fashion Pakistan going places and reaching heights. In five years, it will be nothing less than a force to be reckoned with. And I also expect it will come to be internationally recognized and greatly respected.
How is the Fashion Pakistan team to work with? They are all just stellar! I have a dedicated, driven and cooperative team that has pulls through because of the willingness each of its units exudes. Couldn’t have asked for better people to work with.
In your opinion where does the fashion industry of Pakistan lag behind? With varying degrees of severity, I feel that collectively, as an industry, we all lag behind in professionalism; Which obviously reflects on the maturity we exhibit while handling our work and relative effort.

2014
What steps can be taken to further expand the fashion industry? More than expansion, I feel that we currently require structure. Organizing it and giving it a more professional configuration, as well as composition, is our way forward. Or at least, should be our way forward. To what extent will Pakistan’s contribution in the Delhi Lifestyle Expo benefit Fashion Pakistan and the fashion industry as a whole? Considering that the governments of both the nations have been trying to stabilize and aid economic ties for bilateral trade, this event will serve to be a real milestone as not only will it take place at the capital, but will also allow our designers to find venues and opportunities across the border. It will be organized by the Trade and Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP). The last edition of this venture took place in 2012 and was a lot of success. It brought our designers a credible platform and allowed them to exhibit amongst a promising group of investors and people looking to form commercial ties. This year will be nothing short of being just as amazing and opportune.
Is Fashion Pakistan planning to bring ex pat Pakistani designers aboard? Yes, of course. They are already part of our crew and we plan to go on working on a multitude of levels with them. What do you see in the collections of the young Fashion Pakistan designers that sparks your interest? I appreciate how all of the collections carry and well represent the individuality of their respective designers. It gives a lot of variety as well as uniqueness to each exhibit. Also, collections, while being full of variety, should not be a mesh of unconnected ideas. Rather, a simply chic collection can be a winner. Or just wholesomely follow your theme. Don’t go so off shore that it comes off looking more bizarre than coordinated. As the Chairperson Fashion Pakistan, who is also running an independent clothing line, what suggestions would you give to young designers competing to make their mark? The fashion industry is full of role models or people you can idolize. But in the process of getting inspired, don’t end up intimidating your own ideas. Stay true to your core ideology and that is what will set you apart from the crowd. If your collections don’t speak volumes of just who you are, they are anything but the exclusivity you can thrive on. Apart from that, stay humble. Festering egos will not get you anywhere and since there isn’t ever an objective yardstick you can measure yourself against, you can’t be sure you’re just ready to be that egocentric.
What new dimensions are the designers on board bringing to their designs for the Lifestyle Expo? We have always made sure that when our designers take their work to India, they spellbound their audiences. As I mentioned, the last of this exhibition was a success and people came to appreciate every bit of what we had to offer. But the dimensions on which we wish to proceed this year, to be really honest, are going to be unveiled at the event itself. What I can, as of yet, assure you is that it will be a blockbuster of its own and will leave as big an impact as you we hope for it to. 2014

In the Spotlight Anum Soofi of Retail Therapy Us talks to Paperazzi! How would you define your personal style? My personal style has always been the simpler you look, the better. I have always dressed up myself effortlessly. Whether it’s from wearing a boyfriend jeans and a tee or a plain kurta and pants.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and what Retail Therapy is all about. My real journey started when i moved to Lahore from Sialkot almost 10 years ago, after my dear dad’s demise. Everything in my life has come totally unexpected and I’ve always embraced it at the very best I could. While I was doing my law degree from a local university, I made a sudden switch to working with my mother into our family business. For me it was just a mere obligation or responsibility I could say. I did feel good about it, the appreciation and pride of being who I am, but still there was my true passion lacking. I’ve always thought of doing something different, something new, which justifies the real talent and passion in me. Fashion is the key I’ve always pulled off well, it has always been my passion to dress well and look good. Just recently one day When I was cleaning up my own closet, thinking what’s the best I could do to get rid off my Vintage/preloved designer goods, the idea of a certain venture came into my mind. And That’s how Retail Therapy Us was invented. Retail Therapy Us is a reliable advertising platform which specialises in selling authentic preloved/vintage designer goods on valuable and economical prices. In Pakistan, knowing how vastly the fashion trend has taken over, the idea of such venture made a complete sense. Retail Therapy Us is majorly serving to all the fashionistas in Pakistan, who may have second thoughts about their unused brand new products or would consider selling their pre-loved authentic designer goods. However, there’s a big ratio of international market approaching for such a platform. We specialise in scrutinised authentication on each product to be accepted on RetailTherapyUs. This forum is based on providing services to all the class of communities. Who or what inspired you to start something so different? My inspiration to start Retail Therapy Us is definitely my very own passion for fashion. In Pakistan, it’s not easy to maintain standards on such forums. You get criticised a several times if this is original or fake. Haha. But I accepted it as a challenge to build up standard services. It was my very own random thought which inspired me on doing something “different”. 36

How would you define the fashion industry in Pakistan? Fashion Industry in Pakistan has never been better than this. The fast growth and competition by every day is serving the best to every class around. Which is actually very important. Especially when I go to fashion weeks and acknowledge their work, I think its highly impressive and reward winning. What is your biggest strength as an entrepreneur As an entrepreneur, my biggest strength is my own belief. My father has set a great example of being the eternal strength in my life. Everything I do, is based on how he would take such a task in such scenario. It is like a guidance to me itself. I can take up on any challenge. All I can say is that, I’ve been highly blessed to keep maintaining the stability in me for everything I do. Do you think a company like Retail Therapy do well in Pakistan? Retail Therapy Us is a new venture for almost half of the population of Pakistan to understand. The amount of obsession for fashion in our society has taken up on an extreme level. The spending on pre-loved items are very less compared to the original goods. And the demand for pre-owned items will definitely grow once there’s a true recognition of it. They say “it’s better to buy none than to buy a fake one”. So According to me, it should definitely work. Who are your fashion influences/inspirations? My parents are the biggest influence on me on this fashion perspective. They have always dressed well and looked so classy. My mom has been the real inspiration, with all of her vintage bags, shoes and accessories completely intact up till now inspires me to value my goods and exclusivity. Favourite holiday destination London, always. But Australia is highly on the list of my next holiday destinations. Favourite cuisine I love Asian food. Thai food, always on the go. Your fashion icon? Coco chanel Guilty pleasure Excessive intake of chocolate Favourite perfume Armani Prive Oud Describe yourself in three words Strong, Classy, Mysterious

I fell in love with my mothers wedding lengha when I was a little girl and I knew it was something I had to wear on my wedding. It was made by the uber talented Mrs.Kazmi and Bunto Kazmi 25 years ago. The lengha and dupatta were fuchsia that had beautiful floral patterns made with dabka, kora and coloured thread work. My favourite part was the beautiful shades of green, purple and ferozie running along the borders of the dupatta and lengha. The shirt was plain raw silk in fuchsia as well. Wanting to be a traditional mendhi bride I opted for minimum makeup and flowers in my hair and Natasha Salon did a great job with both. To complete the look I wore a polki matha patti.

For the valima I wanted something different and a little more modern, so I chose Nazli Akbar. It was an ice blue jora with heavy silver embroidery all over. The kameez was a front open and flowy net with silver work and beautiful scallops on the neckline and daman. She gave me loose pants with heavy work and a long net dupatta with kaamdani. I wore an heirloom diamond and pearl set which was given to my mother by my grandmother. Shamain did my makeup again and this time gave me a completely different look with grey/blue eyes and a pale pink lip.

When it came to choosing my shaadi jora, I knew it had to be Bunto Kazmi. The first time I saw it in her fitting room when it was ready, I couldn’t resist screaming out loud how beautiful it was! It was a long shirt made with biscuit coloured french net that had stunning intricate heavy embroidery in silver all over with the prettiest flowers in magenta and baby pink. The dupatta was a 6 meter long net in dusty pink with the same embroidery and the farshi garara was mint green and magenta. To match the outfit, my inlaws gave me an equally stunning diamond and ruby set. Shamain did a brilliant job with the makeup and made me look like a fairy tale princess.

Travelling is great fun! You get to explore a new place meet new people and get wiser! Whether you like to travel alone or with stories and experiences, we want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our new section, planes, trains & automobiles! Tell us about your favourite or one of your favourite destination spots. Where did you choose to go and why? The concrete jungle really is where dreams are made of, and there’s no denying that New York has an unparalleled pulse, an excitement that’s contagious. Because of this reason, New York City is one of my favourite cities! Who did you travel with? I love travelling with my family. There’s nothing like the quality time you get to spend on vacation with the people you love, and the memories you make along the way are priceless. Where did you stay? Staying as close to the hustle and bustle of the city is what gives you the true empire state of mind, however my family and I decided to stay in New Jersey, also known as the Garden State. If you’re planning to stay for a longer period

of time, I would suggest renting out a serviced apartment which would be much more feasible and convenient, and wouldn’t compromise on your distance from the city. Ctizen M on Times Square and Langham Place on 5th Avenue are also excellent choices to reside at during your stay. What are the best shopping spots there? New York is most definitely a shopaholic’s dream place. Fifth Avenue is unrivalved as the most popular shopping street in America. With Saks, Bergdorf Goodman, Tiffany’s & Co., and Henri Bendel, not to mention virtually every other retailer in the world with shops lining this avenue, your hands with never be empty! Macy’s, the self-proclaimed “biggest department store in the world” dominates Herald Square & the Garment District and window shopping on Madison Avenue is an experience you must not miss! Soho’s cobblestoned streets and loftlike spaces make the neighborhood a prettier spot for shopping than the average galleria, and is known for its bohemian yet sophisticated merchandise and restaurants. Tell us about the sights no one should miss out on Extremely cliche, but you can’t leave New York without going up the Empire
Finally, any tips? New York can sometimes be overwhelming with its boisterous traffic and claustrophobic vibe, so keep your cool and try keeping up with its fast pace. No time is enough to fathom everything in this enchanted city that never sleeps. There’s something new to see at every corner of the street so enjoy to the fullest. You never know what may inspire you!
travel diaries
Suggest some amazing restaurants there? Dining at Eleven Madison Park is an experience of it’s own, and has to hand down, be one of the best French restaurants I’ve ever dined at. Getting a reservation there can be tedious but the food is worth the wait! Situated in midtown west, Nobu is the perfect place to be for all Japanese cuisine lovers. The food is simply divine and you’ll forget all sushi imitations once you taste it here. Greenwich Village posesses a prodigious variety of restaurants- Blue Hill & Lupa being my personal favourite. Pizza parlours are New York’s pride and each one tastes as good as the other! You can’t leave this city without having Shake Shack and eating at the Boathouse in Central Park. Waffles & Dinges’ carts will be seen numerous times on the streets, and you’ll forget anything you tried in Belgium once you have a bite out of these! Try the chocolate pizza and the European fondue at Max Brenner, and eat your preferred flavour of cupcakes at Magnolia’s Bakery. You’ll be able to decipher its location from the long line of people outside, anxiously waiting for a decadent indulgence. La Creperie in mid town is a hole in the wall and serves the best nutella crepes and hi tea at the Plaza Hotel will make you feel like you’re back in the Victorian Era!

trips to the Columbus Circle Mall, visiting the others is a definite must!
State Building. Get the express pass to avoid waiting in long lines. Take the 3 hour Lady Liberty Cruise, where the boat tours around the main five boroughs of New York. The skyline from the waters is extremely picturesque and definitely worth going on. Amidst the concrete jungle is the enormous Central Park, also thought of as the city’s playground. This refreshing sanctuary is the ideal place for a picnic and open air concerts. Rent bikes from outside the park and spend an afternoon cycling all around the park. The Brooklyn Bridge is a reminder of New York’s history of architectural innovation. Enjoy spectacular views of lower Manhattan and other city landmarks from this magnificent landmark. The world famous MET steps belong to one of the best museums you’ll ever visit. Behind the doors of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s iconic neoclassical facade, lie multiple curatorial collections spanning countless eras and cultural perspectives, and for all the history lovers, this visual feast is unfathomable even in an entire day. Similarly, the Modern Museum of Modern Arts is an impeccable museum, worth spending an entire day at. The ancient artifacts and world renowned paintings will sweep you off your feet! Times Square is a major landmark of New York City, with it’s illuminated billboards circumventing you, you’ll never find this square without people, no matter what time of the day it is! You could spend an entire day at the Rockefeller Centre and not feel mundane. This multiblock complex houses many iconic sites. Explore the place and have refreshing drinks at the cafe in the afternoon, and enjoy open air concerts and rooftop garden parties at night. Watch plays and musicals at the New York Theatre at Broadway and try getting tickets before hand to get the best seats. Phantom of the Opera was one of my favourite shows there.

Arguments take up more of your time than you’d really like on Monday and Tuesday, but there’s more to them than you may realize at first, so engage with your usual vigor and gusto. After they are settled, you should be able to fly through work or chores midweek — stuff at home is especially appealing and easy to take care of. Early this weekend, you need to make the call about what you and your people are doing, and your initiative should help everyone get the most out of their downtime. Reserve judgment on Sunday.
This week is heavy on listening and observation — you can learn a lot! Slow down on Monday and Tuesday, and make sure you’re not jumping into any large or long-term projects without thinking them through quite thoroughly, getting all the information you can about them. Midweek sees your intuitive side opening up in a big way, and you should be able to read your friends and family quite easily. Though you know what’s going on, avoid the temptation of saying ‘I told you so’ this weekend, as most people are ready to slide into resentment at a moment’s notice!
Your fun, flirty energy is a joy to behold early this week, and you should be able to charm anyone from new clients to potential dates — even if they pretend to themselves that they can resist! Lay the groundwork for good times to come, but don’t be too surprised if a bit of mental fatigue hits you on Wednesday. You should shake it off pretty quickly, but your thinking is a bit fuzzy and confused for a day or two in the meantime. At some point on Friday you sharpen right back up, and may find yourself taking sides in an argument you never really cared about before.
You need to examine the little details of your work or home life on Monday and Tuesday, even if you thought they were already under control. It never hurts to double-check, and you’ve got the mental focus to really nail them. Midweek is much more personal for you, and your great emotional energy should help you pursue whatever interests or projects you have been putting off for a little too long. Make sure that the weekend’s activities include at least some in which you excel — the impulse to show off is irresistible, and you may as well feel confident while you do so!

Talk with people — especially, but not exclusively, friends — about what you want to do next month or next year. You should be able to articulate your dreams in a new way, and thus bring them a little closer to reality. Midweek is quiet time for you, though there may be some drama around the home to deal with. Your low-key energy is the answer, and at least one person should find a new kind of respect for you. On Friday, you should wake up feeling like a million bucks, and even total strangers will look twice when you stroll by.
You are feeling pretty skeptical of most people’s claims early in the week — and that’s a good thing, even if they don’t like it. Use that logic you’re so famous for to get at the root of the matter, no matter where it leads. Spend extra time with your family on Wednesday and Thursday; it may be a good time for you to all get together and make plans or just enjoy each other’s company. As the weekend approaches, you may feel that you’re too far behind to really enjoy yourself, but by Sunday, at the latest, you should find yourself exactly where you want to be!
Your great mental energy helps you make plans and develop new ideas on Monday and Tuesday, and you also ought to impress someone with the quality of your thinking. Keep up the patter, and make sure others are involved! You hit a slow patch midweek, but if you turn your attention outward, you can help your friends or family with their simpler needs. It’s a good time to think about changing home arrangements. Your hopes are out in the open this weekend, and if you remain optimistic, you may find a friend who can help you with what you need.
Something small but important pops up early in the week, and you might be the only person who recognizes it for what it is. Don’t waste any time explaining to others — just deal with it as quickly as you can and then move on. Let go of your worries on Wednesday and Thursday, as they should prove unfounded soon, and are certainly keeping you from realizing your full potential. You don’t have to control every aspect of the situation! Work problems may arise this weekend, and your boss or primary client is almost certainly to blame.

The week starts with a bang, as your mental and romantic energies are in near-perfect sync; you may find yourself drifting into a new love connection. If that’s what you’re looking for, go for it of course! It’s a good time to strike up new friendships, as well. On Wednesday and Thursday, your dealings with people you know well could become quite heated, so try to make sure you aren’t overreacting. It’s hard to get much work done on Friday, what with the constant interruptions — just about everyone has something to tell you, and that could last through the weekend.
You’re of two minds early this week, and that could make it hard to be sympathetic with those who have made their choices. You’re still on the fence, but eventually you need to join one side or the other. Wednesday and Thursday bring a surge of fun energy, and might make your choice clear. If not, you’re more than content to simply enjoy the vibe and postpone everything else for a while. Someone important loses their patience on Friday, though, so you should probably flip a coin or do whatever it takes to get them off your back at that point.

You need to make a decision early this week, which shouldn’t be too hard, but may have profound implications for your people. The outcome is entirely up to you, even if it feels as if you are constrained somehow. Try not to worry too much if you and a family member are at odds on Wednesday or Thursday — it’s just a short phase of being out of synch, and as long as you don’t take it seriously, it passes quickly. Your natural advantages are accentuated this weekend, and your fiery energy should make everything more fun!
Things may seem a bit off-kilter this week, so at least have some fun during the wild ride! On Monday and Tuesday, you’ve got more to do than time to do it, and might find yourself unable to focus on any one task for very long. Just try to do your best. Your emotions range a lot higher and lower midweek, which could be exhausting, but shouldn’t last for so long that you want the ride to stop. Work-related issues pop up on Friday and stay with you for a bit; it seems that at least one person (maybe a competitor) will do anything to get ahead.
