CRAZY SEXY COOL How did you ever start acting? I was actually a child actor. My family friend Muneeza Hashmi, MD of PTV, used to cast us in plays. My cousin and I hosted kiddy shows. Professionally, when I started college at NCA I was part of a Sitcom which used to air on STN called College Jeans. A lot of us started from there, Ali Zafar also started from there, Faysal Quraishi used to write it and that was a great experience. Once college ended people started noticing and I started getting offers for acting jobs. So acting wasn’t always planned? No way! I’m a painter. Well now painting has taken a back seat and here I am! Tell us a little about your upcoming movie “Yalghar. Well Yalghar was offered to me during the time Waar had released. I was actually at the screening of Waar and I was approached by Dr. Hassan Raana, the director and producer for Waar. I didn’t know who he was so once we started talking he told me that he wanted to cast me in Waar but he wasn’t able to get in touch with me in time. He also told me that I wouldn’t believe this but I’m in the process of writing another story and I’ve written the character keeping you in mind. And he was right, I was a bit surprised and it was unbelievable. I was pleasantly shocked when I found out my other friend; Bilal Ashraf was also immediately approached and came on board. Especially because before this Bilal and I were actually planning on getting a script together and working on an independent movie so we were really excited! Tell us a bit about your character. She is a girl from Swat and the story is based on true events that took place over a course of 72 hours. I can’t reveal much but it’s really tough the situation she’s in and what she’s been through. I had to do research and homework to really get into character and I did attend some workshops and got training from some acting coaches because you know as it is film is a completely different ballgame plus my character was just so intense. What do you think about the revival of Pakistan’s Film Industry? I for one am very excited about it. I have watched some Lollywood movies growing up and I’m sure most people will agree that films back then only catered to a particular section of society. The same kind of stuff was being made over and over and of course only because it worked. Now people have started to take notice of current affairs and explore and inform the viewers. I feel like we are still trying to find our identity as a film industry, just like Bollywood has its own identity and Hollywood has their image formed as well. So all sorts of things are being done there’s horror, action, comedy, romance and drama and I feel it’s great because there is now something for everybody! It will take a few years but we are getting there. I would like to add that I am the sort who’d rather stay in my own country and work rather than jumping on the band wagon and work for another country’s film industry, it’s very easy to do that, but it’s not me because I am a huge patriot. I chose to study here I chose to live here and work here, I’ve always wanted our country to excel! Tell us a challenging or funny incident while you were shooting for Yalghar. My character was just so intense that just jumping in and out of character was quite tough on its own. I mean there were endless scenes where I was crying and shouting and howling and I was very nervous initially but I do have to say that my team was absolutely brilliant and they 30

definitely played a big role in making it easier for me. They are a bunch of young and passionate individuals who are very supportive and very eager to learn at the same time. A funny incident would be the fact that Humayun, who is playing a negative role in the movie, is a person I have a very chilled out relationship with him and in the movie I was supposed to totally hate him so there were many moments where we would burst out laughing. There was one scene where he had to be really violent with me and the poor guy was afraid that he was going to really hurt me. I told him not to worry and just stay true to character but that ended up being so intense that I ended up having bruises and marks all over my arms. But it was a fun experience none the less. Your thoughts on the beautiful collection by Élan you are wearing for this shoot. I am in love with the clothes. Khadija and I actually went to school together, she was my junior and I was sort of her teacher in A-levels for Art. Even since she was only helping her mum initially I have been in love with her designs. I’ve seen Elan evolve from just kurtas and pretwear so it’s a huge honour for me to be a part of this gorgeous Art Struck Collection. Every piece is a statement and its super girly and feminine but also very comfortable at the same time. How was your experience working for Grease? How is working for TV different than theatre? Nothing like it! For me Grease reminded me of all my school theatre days because I have danced to all those songs and done the play etc. At first I rejected the thought of auditioning but then I found myself being drawn towards it. It kept reminding me of theatre in school and I realised I really wanted to do it. I knew working with Nida Butt meant no nonsense attitude, I knew I’d have to give in four months to this project without getting anything in return. But I auditioned and I got the part and at first, even Nida wasn’t sure whether my commitment was real but I proved to be one of the most punctual people in those 4 months and she was certainly pleased about that. It was so refreshing and a great experience. We all became one big family and I absolutely loved working with Nida. How do you like to walk the ramp? Which ramp moment do you cherish the most? I only do ramp for my friends whenever I can for them. I remember walking for Nomi Ansari at FPW two years ago which was a collection in which he had no models but only celebs walking for him. That was cool and it was a bunch of us just having a lot of fun. However, my most memorable ramp experience was in college when we were celebrating an era of fashion and I was in the 80’s segment. I walked with Ali Zafar with our red hair and denim and I remember having a crazy time.

My friends say that when Ayesha leaves her house she carries her whole house with her in her bag. What makes you jump out of joy? Food! I love to cook and I love to eat. You can say I live to eat contrary to what people think. I love spending money on really good food and I don’t eat junk. If there was nothing available and I had a fast food restaurant in front of me I would rather buy some apples and eat that. So yes I love eating but I eat healthy. I also love being outdoors- it gives me immense joy!

CRAZY SEXY COOL What’s your personal style mantra? While working do you like to improvise your own flavour to the styling? Absolutely, I do like giving suggestions but only if its needed, otherwise I just shut up. My style Mantra- Know your body type and dress according to the occasion. I will wear my shalwar kameez to the market, when I go out I love to dress up and when I am working you’ll find me in a T-shirt and jeans. I do believe my style has evolved, as every ones does, I used to wear a lot of colour but I feel like I don’t as much anymore. Which drama role has been the most challenging for you? It has to be “Woh Chaar” a Hum TV project. The reason why it was so challenging was because it was a serial in which the same four women played a new story over 4 episodes. I played lots of different roles in lots of different conditions; I even played deaf and dumb and that was very tough. Which character is the closest to your reality? The role I played in “Kaisa Yeh Junoon” for ARY. It’s the closest to me for sure and I truly enjoyed that experience. Except for the fact that she gets married she is very similar to me. She’s a painter and she belongs to a very progressive family who’s not judgmental and believes that every individual should go out in the world and make their own mark. I grew up with that mindset. I lost my dad when I was one, I was raised by a single parent but my mother instilled these qualities in me since the start to make me tougher. Share with us the most surprising fan stories you have ever come across. I have a lot of fan stories you know because “Bulbulay” is so massive and shares such a wide fan following. The coolest and weirdest thing is my biggest fan following comes from two to four year old kids. The other day I was on my way to Saddar and there was one of those street vendor kids who looked at me and said “Khoobsurat Baji.” I found it so funny and I joked with him that “so you find the time to watch the show, haan?” to which he just laughed. Those flower kids outside Dolmen Mall call me “Khoobsurat Baji.” That feeling right there is so great, it’s a service to just put a smile on so many people’s faces. It makes my day to know I can take away someone’s stresses and worries even if it’s for a few minutes. Then there’s a diehard fan of mine since four years from London who is my biggest fan on my Facebook Page and fights and defends me through thick and thin and I have about five such fans who I actually now know by name. They are like my friends and my therapists, it’s the sweetest thing! Acting, singing or modeling, which is the most challenging? Acting is definitely the most challenging! Your favourite Coke Studio Song? There’s so many: Noori’s song, Chambay de booti, Pamona by Zeb and Haniya, and Garaj Baras with Ali and Rahat together- absolutely loved it. What’s your secret behind your success in multiple careers? To be honest, I don’t feel like I’m that successful yet and I still have a long way to go to be where I want to be. I learn from everything I do and I just commit and work as hard as I can. I’m not so ambitious so the reason for getting into multiple careers is I feel life is too short to have regrets so I never restricted myself to one thing. My acting helps me with singing and vice versa I just try to learn as much as I possibly can from each 30 34

experience and make it count in the next thing that I do. Also, my mum is my biggest support in everything. She always made sure I was involved in lots of extra curricular when I was young and all that helps me now. If you could caption your life what would it be? Seize the day. How do you take out time for yourself in your busy schedule? What’s your health and fitness regime? I have no time to exercise. I’ve been planning to start Yoga for over a year now. But I do compensate for that in my diet, I eat healthy and I eat fresh food. I do take out time to do my own groceries or buy my fresh fruits from the market. Are you tech savy? Just the normal amount. What’s your take on Social Media (Facebook and Instagram)? It’s a brilliant way to stay in touch and communicate with people and be updated with everything else in the world. But at the same time we shouldn’t be too involved in it because I feel like it has made people way more self conscious and vain than they should be- it’s not healthy. It’s great for celebrities and fans to stay in touch and keep them as close to your life as possible but you have to strike a balance. Are you a blackberry person or a loyal iPhone user? I was always a loyal iPhone user until I recently switched to Samsung but this is temporary I will switch back. Your favourite cuisine? I love Italian, Thai and Japanese (sushi). Favourite restaurant in Karachi? Okra Favourite holiday destination? London- it has everything needed for a good holiday! I also love the beach so an Island where I have a nice place to stay and there is good delicious food. Have you ever had any issue or controversy with a co-star? Never. What do you do in your idle time? I watch a lot of movies as I live right across a cinema, I eat out a lot and I love hanging out with my friends every day unless I’m working. The fragrance you relate to? Stella by Stella McCartney but recently I’ve started using Roberto Cavali. What can you not leave the house without? My bag, my keys, my wallet… Actually a lot of things. My friends say that when Ayesha leaves she carries her whole house with her in her bag. Lastly, what are you future plans in terms or marriage? Of course I want to get married and settle down but at the moment it’s not on my mind and neither do I have any family pressure, therefore I am in no hurry.

then, the man had left the shop and was already out of sight. While my mother brought the shop down, the attendants, instead of proactively looking for the man, stood behind their counters, uncomfortable, and, embarrassed. I never forgot that incident and at times, even now, when the memory manages to seep its way back into my present, out of the blue, I find myself clenching my teeth in desperate rage to throw a punch at the phantom man from my past. I wind up feeling helpless and then, to appease myself, I concoct scenarios where I’m pummeling his face with my fists or delivering sharp, flattening kicks to his groin. But should an incident like that happen to me again, God forbid, would I be confident enough, conscious enough – in the moment – to slam the attacker? I don’t know. And that makes me feel very unsettled. Almost every female friend of mine has had one or two (or many) horrible experiences of being felt up by male servants, harassed on the streets, suffering abuse at the hands of a man, an employer, etc. And of course, for others, the sexual harassment goes even further, resulting in rape.

Harnessing her superpower SONYA REHMAN In a bid to raise awareness about violence against women in India, Raj Shetye, a photographer published a photo-shoot which featured a model being physically harassed by men on a bus. While Shetye’s intentions warrant speculation, the shoot, once published, had a completely opposite effect. It created quite a stink online, on social media and in the media at large – why? Because critics stated that the shoot did nothing but “glamorize rape.” If you look at the pictures, it is true: one in particular features the female model in a black dress, her legs pried apart as one male model clutches, steadies her top half, while the other has his head pressed against her knee. The picture is at best, disturbingly erotic. Spreading awareness of violence against women? Right. But I write this article not to simply lambast the media’s role in sexualizing a woman as an object (hasn’t that been done to death?), but in the hopes to shed light on how the media has had a huge role to play in making women forget their one, true superpower: feminine energy. Every woman has it. I’ll just get to that in a bit. Years ago, I was at Anees Book Corner in Lahore, buying stationary and folders with my mother. It must’ve been early evening. I was standing near my mother at one of the counters near the door. From the corner of my eye I saw a grubby young man in a black shalwar kameez enter the shop. A few minutes later, I saw the man approach the counter where we were standing. It all happened very quickly, he grabbed my chest roughly, squeezed, and made his way to the exit calmly. No one noticed. I stood there, pale, in complete shock. Nudging my mother in a daze, I told her what had transpired, but by 40

PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE

2014

In Pakistan, no matter how ‘modern’ we’ve begun to appear on the surface, society still retains a cold shame when it comes to not only speaking up about abuse, but also, acting out against abuse. I find we’ve regressed on an emotional level very rapidly. It’s almost animalistic. And I felt that deeply, standing in the book shop, ashamed, feeling utterly violated, as unsure, shifty-eyed shopkeepers looked at me uncomfortably, mirroring my shame. But more disturbing still, my very own lack of action. Why did I not react? Why did I just stand there, so winded, when I could’ve grabbed his neck and smashed his face with my fist? I’ve always been an outspoken person, yet, when I was molested by a stranger, why did I allow myself to be debased, taken advantage of? I know so many strong women who are such remarkable go-getters, yet, most of them allow themselves to be abused, manipulated and violated by strangers, partners, boyfriends, etc. Why? Why is our strength only neck upwards? I’d like to add that I am not promoting women morphing into hulks with rage issues; I mean that would be rather easy wouldn’t it? Don’t ever shave, become butch and nurture a nasty, take-no-shit attitude, but to retain your feminine energy with unflinching self-belief takes far more work. Far more pain. Far more balance. So why have women forgotten how to use and harness their feminine energy? Why such a lack of awareness in their gift? Women’s intuition is real and true. The strength of a woman can make or break – she can get what she wants, when she wants, however she may want it. But I am beginning to realize that women are fast forgetting how to develop and nurture their inner strength, the untapped core of what makes them female, unique, powerful. It comes back to the media and entertainment industry: content has never before been so erotic and sexualized resulting in an invisible, colossal wave of collective female debasement. And isn’t it interesting, you would think men are scot-free, but they are not. The more objectified and sexualized a woman, the more lustful and weak-willed, the man. He is chained to his desire, chained to the fantasy of urgent sex; the chapters in the book of desire never, ever end, phantom women upon women upon women, to stoke the fire of his ravenous desire. Coming back to Shetye’s fashion shoot, the outcry against his twisted ‘project’ is justified. The shoot stands as just one tiny drop in the ocean of the media’s active role in the dilution of the female self, objectifying her as a thing that must be urgently debased, conquered, discarded. The debasement lies in advertisements; Kareena Kapoor teasing the tip of a Magnum chocbar with her thick lips, a sliced mango pressed to Katrina Kaif’s mouth (‘pure mango pleasure’), women used in car advertisements in tiny denim shorts, frolicking in soap suds and water…the examples are never-ending. With women, the erosion of self-worth takes place at a very, very deep level. I’m not good enough. I need to be perfect. Will I ever be good enough? Will I ever be approved for who I truly am? Will I ever be loved so deeply and so sincerely that I will never have to face another day where I question my worth? Will I ever be complete within myself? Will I ever be able to love myself in stunning, wonderful totality without the need for male approval? Women today, need to keep reminding themselves that they are enough. They are whole. And that they can fight back with courage and resilience. There are countless examples of women out there who’ve done just that – women who continue to remain conscious of their strength, their superpower, harnessing it like a wild horse and using it where needed. At their will.

I chose to go to Thailand and the only reason why I went was because my trip was a spur of the moment idea and I needed to find a place which didn’t require a lot of planning and could be arranged quickly. I had been there years ago with my family but recently some friends recommended it saying it’s not the same as it was years ago. We went to Phuket for 5 days as I wanted to go to a place where I could just relax at the beach but we stopped at Bangkok for 3 days before as I needed some major retail therapy. Who did you travel with? My plan was to travel with my younger sister. I have been working for a year and she had just given her college exams so we both needed to relax and get some change of air. However, closer to the date someone very close and super fun became a part of the plan and I’m very glad it worked out that way. Since we’re all young and had the same levels of energy we participated in almost everything the city/island had to offer!

travel diaries

Where did you stay? We stayed at the Hyatt Regency Resort at Kamala. It was located at a private beach and was absolutely stunning. It was definitely away from all the commotion and had a more relaxing and quiet ambience- exactly what we wanted. It’s about 15 minutes away from Patong Beach and Bangla Road which is where you need to be if you like to party. What are the best shopping spots there? Unfortunately, we didn’t really visit shopping malls in Phuket as I wanted to make sure once we were at the island we were only making most of all the adventure it had to offer. We did stroll in an out of a mall called Jungceylon which had its fair share of high street retail shops. However, right outside the mall is a huge market by Patong beach where you can get great bargains. Shopping in Bangkok- completely different story! My favourite mall was definitely Central Mall. It is their newest and largest mall and had possibly every retailer/designer store you could wish for. Our backs and feet were almost

What can you do over there to relax and unwind? Nothing else compares to Thai foot massages and you can get these almost anywhere in Phuket. If you are near Patong beach you will stumble upon at least one massage parlor every thirty seconds. However you would want to choose carefully as even though each of them may pressurize you into coming in, not all of them can be equipped with the same level of hygiene. My recommendation would be to go to the spa in your hotel; they are the most reliable and have a more extensive variety of services to offer. To relax and unwind after each day of adventure we liked to come back to our hotel and jump in the infinity pool, watch the sunset and have our dinner on the water beds right there. Finally, any tips? Almost all of the local people in Thailand are weak in the English language. Their dialect makes it even harder to understand what the are saying so be prepared to be patient and be prepared to very soon be talking just like them in no time. Tuks Tuks are a great way to get around but many Taxi and Tuk Tuk drivers tend to fool you in terms of how much they would charge as they almost never run on meter and like to fix a standard rate before the journey. Overall, Thailand is a great country and so full of life, I had really underestimated it but I can safely say I had one of the best trips of my life!

Tell us about the sights no one should miss out on The Phi Phi island day tour is a must for anyone who visits Phuket especially if you’re a swimmer! They have many activities to offer such as snorkeling, diving in a lagoon, exploring Viking caves etc. The sights to see there, one will always cherish for life. If you’re going with parents and elder members you must warn them about the bumpy/scary speedboat ride to all these places. The Big Buddha is one stunning temple to visit and learn about the local culture. The view of the island from top there is to die for. Zorbing Rolling Ball at Kamala is a unique and fun sport to participate in. You basically sit in a huge rubber ball filled in with a little water and pushed from the top of hill to roll off to the bottom. It is one of hell of an experience! Flying Hanuman is a forest park which is perfect for adventure lovers as it offers activities such as zip-lining, trekking and other forest adventures. One of the craziest experiences I had on this trip was at the Tiger Kingdom where I sat inside a cage with seven full grown tiger. Although

Suggest places for a perfect night out. It’s probably the easiest to have a night out in Phuket than anywhere else in the world. All you have to do is land up at Bangla Road which is clustered with Clubs and Bars each with a unique ambience. The street is generally very happening and exciting no matter what day of the week it is and once you reach there you’ll undoubtedly find more than one reason to be amused.

Suggest some amazing restaurants there? The Nikki beach club and restaurant is very famous for its divine sushi and Sunday brunch. Sunset Grill at Kamala was a fine dining restaurant with a limited menu but it is, hands down, bliss for steak lovers.

the place does offer 4 different sizes of tigers and you can interact with the ones you feel most comfortable with but my suggestion is that once you’re there you may as well go and say hello to the “Big Cat.”

breaking by the time we were through with the mall. Embassy Mall is amazing for all the high end designer and luxury goods. Then there’s always the wholesale malls such as MBK and Platinum which are famous for great bargains but the drawbacks of the place are compromise on quality of products and does require a lot of browsing to find something you like.

Monday and Tuesday return you to very typical early-in-the-week terrain. The days unfold in your imagination with some amount of dread — you worry about the things you have to do, the people you have to call and forgetting to do this or that. But there’s no need to fret, because sheer competence will make everything easy. You’re good, so try to remember that. There’s nothing in this week that you can’t do with your eyes closed. Wednesday through Friday you draw heavily on your people skills, which you’re happy to show off. However, being your charming best does sap energy. Have a restful weekend.

Something’s blossoming between you and you-know-who. Love? An affectionate friendship? An intuitive partnership on the level of Sherlock and Watson? Monday and Tuesday, you’re inseparable. For the time being, table the conversation about what’s developing between you two and let life take its course. Wednesday through Friday, the course isn’t all that exciting outwardly, but inwardly you’re thrilled. You’re singing songs and smiling and buying people gifts for the heck of it. This weekend, a small drama balloons to inappropriate dimensions, but that happens when feelings run deep.

You could spell out how you feel in huge words on a billboard and still your family wouldn’t understand it. They’d simply drive right by. If they did see it, they’d ask you to define your terms. Such is Monday and Tuesday. Try not to let the difficulty communicating with them stop you from communicating altogether. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday provide quite a contrast: You’re around friends who know you and your feelings almost better than you do. Plus, fun and romance are in the stars. This weekend, you find yourself wrapped up in a small, fascinating mystery.

You can look at a very complex situation and find the one thing that’s slightly amiss. And, even more than that, you know without thinking too hard what to do about it. Monday and Tuesday, this talent serves you (and the people around you) very well. Wednesday through Friday your efforts aren’t quite as celebrated, especially around your home, where someone might misunderstand something you say, heave a freshly baked pie onto the ground and storm upstairs. (Or do something equally dramatic.) That sort of volatility leaves you feeling apprehensive this weekend.

Monday and Tuesday have a reflective quality. You find yourself reassessing certain strategies and reconsidering goals. A couple of sacred cows may become slightly less sacred (and this is helpful and healthy). Plus, money is on your mind. Are you using your resources to their maximum potential? Wednesday through Friday, maximizing potential remains a priority, but it takes on a social dimension. It’s apparent to you that your friends are brilliant, and their adoration of you speaks volumes. You spend the end of the week and the entire weekend wondering how all of you can harness your collective genius

Suddenly everything lines up with beautiful symmetry. Of course, nothing makes you happier than to see so many cute ducks in orderly rows. Sense and order are major themes on Monday and Tuesday, inspiring you to even greater feats of organization. But there’s no need, on Wednesday or Thursday, to rush out and spend a bunch of money on a newfangled cherry wood organizational system. You’re more creative than that. On Friday, a conversation with someone about a seemingly superficial topic strikes a deep chord. Saturday and Sunday, your curiosity takes you to a strange place.

You’re a social creature on Monday and Tuesday — and you’re getting a lot more out of your social time than the latest news and gossip. Underlying the casual banter is very real information about the lives of people you care about. As usual, your prowess as a listener is unmatched. This undoubtedly contributes to your success in the romantic realm Wednesday through Friday. Your flirting is off the charts. Your energy is off the charts. Your charts are off the charts! Oddly, this weekend, the social and romantic realms recede and you’re focused almost entirely on financial or business concerns.

On Monday and Tuesday, you can probably tell what a friend needs from you without having to ask. Your ability to come through with that sort of instinct separates you from run-ofthe-mill friends, and this week is no time to be a so-so buddy. Wednesday through Friday, stubbornly sticking to your own ideas is a recipe for disaster. Flexibility, giving in to others, being laid-back — these should be your priorities. This weekend, you suddenly find yourself in a position of tremendous influence. You’re inspiring. Sunday is the beginning of something grand.

The people you interact with on Monday and Tuesday each have their own individual goals, and short of sitting someone down and asking them straight out what their goals are, it can be hard to figure them out. Arguably, that makes asking all the more worth it. Doing so would certainly open up new levels of understanding. Wednesday through Friday, personal issues are front and center. Work on connecting with others as opposed to being single-minded in your projects. This weekend, the weather makes you want to hole up in the house and connect with a mug of hot chocolate.

You have the sympathy of a Russian novelist on Monday and Tuesday — you can put yourself in the mind of anyone and see things from their perspective, with incredible detail. That’s your particular (and somewhat secret) strength. Everything flips upside down for you on Wednesday, when someone turns out to be quite a different person than you understood them to be. But, upon reflection, that’s okay with you. You’ve come to understand them. You’re moving on. Thursday and Friday you’re making new friends like crazy. So much so that this weekend, you’re looking for excuses to cancel social plans.

You have to extend yourself on Monday and Tuesday to get everything taken care of. At a certain point, reaching any further may seem impossible, but that’s when you should jump into the challenge. Frustratingly, the challenge is a bit abstract: It most likely comes from a difficult authority figure. Think of this as practice for dealing with people. You get to use that practice right away, because you have a lot of contact with people on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. At that time, you may have to adopt an authority role yourself to settle an argument. The weekend gives you hours of creative, reflective time.

You have a clipboard under your arm and a pencil behind your ear on Monday and Tuesday. You’re taking notes on everything, plus making lists and drawing dimensional diagrams that illustrate the basic concepts of rocket science. Okay, maybe rocket science isn’t involved, but you’re certainly more serious right now than usual. From Wednesday to Friday, you barely crack a smile. There’s a place for that kind of dedication, and the fact that you can channel it when you need to speaks well for your future. Nevertheless, it’s important to take your unwinding time — the weekend — seriously, too
