the dream team khadijah shah & sapphire What is the inspiration behind the prints for Sapphire? Sapphire celebrates the culturally rich heritage of the East. We predominantly feature unique prints and patterns on contemporary stitched silhouettes as well as unstitched fabric. Our emphasis is on producing a high quality, aesthetically beautiful, refined product that delivers a highend fashion experience at a competitive price. How long have you been in talks with Sapphire to jump start the project? We connected earlier this year. How has your experience been in working with Sapphire? I love working with Sapphire. It is one of Pakistan’s most quality driven and professional textile houses. I think this collaboration has been a natural fit for both of us. What benefits are you seeking with collaborating with Sapphire? There has been an overwhelming demand in the mass market for Élan Lawn that’s always left in satiated because of limited supplies- with this collaboration I intend on fully exploring the mass retail market and hopefully establish sapphire as one of Pakistan’s most coveted high street brands. How is this collection different from other similar brands in the market? We are different because we have a hand picked-team of extremely talented people working with us. Our business and production management is being headed by Nabeel who is extremely committed to this project. We are serious about this, and we have systems in place and 40

a well thought out range of product to ensure we are considered in a league of our own amongst the high street brands. What is your vision for Sapphire? I hope to see Sapphire expand to every city of Pakistan within the next two years. Will you focus equally on all aspects (pret, luxury pret, fabric)? Or are you planning on focusing more on an individual aspect? We believe that everyone is looking for something different thus focusing on one product is not the way to go – we will offer the complete range of product that Pakistani women need for their every day wear. What plans are in the pipeline for the New Year? We are gearing up for opening our Lahore store’s in early 2015. What do you intend to bring to the market of womenswear and menswear with Sapphire? A timeless well designed product with just the right amount of oomph and pizazz. What aesthetic does Sapphire incorporate? Fusion, Eastern or Western? Our focus is on classic well cut silhouettes. We are doing tunics of various lengths that can be styled as eastern and western wear- we will continually be adding variety to our mix- I’d love to do a line of tees and western pants in the near future as well. We will evolve with the demands of the market.

Why did you choose to open Sapphire’s first store in Karachi rather than Lahore? Our Karachi store was complete and ready to launch, where as we are still working on getting our Lahore stores ready.

Sapphire just launched their Karachi flagship store – how has the response been? we received a heart warming welcome in Karachi, I couldn’t have asked for more- our audience gave us a big thumbs up!

Do you intend to open more flagship stores across Pakistan? We will be opening our Lahore Flagship store in early 2015 after which we will be expanding to all major cities across Pakistan. 2014

Do you intend to retail online? Yes we hope to start online sales sometime next year. Why did you choose to do pret, luxury and jewellery all at once? We thought it was the best way to go – there has been a void in the market where one can get RTW, unstitched fabric and semiprecious jewellery in one place – you usually find this at separate location in a mall, so we thought that if we provide our consumers with a one-stop-shop – quality fabric, it will enhance their shopping experience. Do you intend to diverge into subbrands handling different aspects or remain as one? Remaining as one is important as it enhances the brands presence – divulging into different sub-brand will only create further questions from our consumers – so to make their experience worthwhile we have introduced various options such as our RTW collection which consists of 3 piece collection, Tunics, unstitched fabric, menswear, scarves, jewellery as well as an embellished collection. However, we will continue to add new products in the future. What plans are in the pipeline for 2015? To make our product available in all major cities of Pakistan, providing products at even better prices with better quality. Do you intend to take part in Fashion Weeks local and international? Yes we do however will update you once we have it locked in :) Where do you intend to go with the brand? Share your vision for Sapphire with us. We have a very long way to go. The first step is to open stores nationwide and then look at the international market. Innovation and more R&D will be an ongoing process for us. How much is your input re-designs and quality? Everyone involved in the project works as one team. My role is predominantly on the production and operations side, however, I am constantly taking advice from Khadijah and vice versa. 42

this place where you are right now SONYA REHMAN The title for this blog post is borrowed from the poem by the 14th century Sufi poet, Hafiz. I’ll get to his poem in a bit. But first, the night before last. I lied to my mother on the pretext that I was going for coffee, when in actual fact, I was going to cover the protest at Liberty Chowk, Lahore, initiated by young Pakistanis in solidarity with Mohammad Jibran Nasir’s Lal Masjid protest in Islamabad this week. Even though I’m an adult (I promise I am), I needed to lie to my only parent as rallies terrify her – mainly the fear of bombs going off at charged protests. While that would terrify just about anyone, Ma, more so. For example, when we used to live in Karachi in the 80s, the security situation in the late 80s left a deep impact on her. One incident in particular, a succession of bomb blasts in a bazaar area (she does not recall the exact location) that made my poor mother so scared and jittery, that at night, she’d stay up looking out 44

PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE

2014

And then there was the time in 2008 when bombs went off at a festival in Lahore that I was covering which was the final nail in the coffin. I’ve hardly ever covered politics in my career – however the few times I have (jeez), my old articles make me horridly embarrassed since I sound like such a naïve little bimbo bacha – I am finding myself frequently pulled in the direction of covering topics and stories that deal with socio-political issues in Pakistan: the minorities, religion, sectarian violence, human interest stories, and so on. Maybe I am tired of writing about rosey posey art and culture subjects – even though that, I will never stop – but I feel the need to suss out more depth in stories pertaining to Pakistan from a nice, big, holistic perspective. On a personal level too, I prefer depth with a few rather than mindless chatter with large groups. So yes, back to the night before last. Lied to Ma, chirpily told her I was going to some shitty café on MM Alam Road, as I walked out of the house, my camera obscured under my late grandmother’s kashmiri shawl. The traffic at the chowk was clogged up due to the protest. While there were no cops deployed around the area, the traffic police looked frazzled diverting traffic to ensure a smooth flow (didn’t work). It was good to be a part of a rally, part of a movement, part of the bigger picture, for once. However I will not exaggerate: the number of civilians, concerned citizens weren’t in the hundreds. At the most, perhaps 200, or less. What was interesting was the number of young students present at the protest – infact a majority of the participants were students with posters and candles, chanting slogans and coaxing people in their cars to join the rally. It was good to be out, together, fighting peacefully for something, rallying for a shared belief. It felt different, rewarding, cleansing, almost. After the Peshawar attack this month, in the days that followed, I realized what a deep impact the tragedy has had on all of us Pakistanis. While the outside world gaped in horror and the international media kept churning out similar pieces, all carrying a similar tone of ‘look how fucked up they are, look, Pakistan, the pit of shit,’ I thought about the resilience of our people. Pakistanis are very graceful when they grieve. But then I also thought about our threshold of pain – it is great, vast, but it is nearing the point where pain moves into profound madness. It starts out slowly, and then hits you full force, and one day you realize, you don’t think like other, normal people, you are paranoid, insecure, detached and an emotional mess – all at once.

Last month, the fire alarm went off at my college one morning. My blood ran cold and I told my students, that in case there was trouble, no one was to panic. In my head I was trying to locate the fire exits in the building. I had been seized with fear and couldn’t think rationally for the life of me. Later, I realized it wasn’t normal to feel like that, to react in such, pure terror.

to be constant and unwavering. Existence will seem meaningless when one focuses only on the personal narrative. Like Hafiz states in his poem (below), our presence in this life has been pre-written – we are here because we are meant to be here, living in these times, experiencing and feeling what we are – what we allow ourselves. Each of us has a greater purpose – from the ordinary to the extraordinary, both as important, both as vital.

And then the Peshawar attack took place. Teachers at the school were doused with petrol, burnt alive, children were shot at multiple times. A friend said to me; can you imagine what the parents must be going through, knowing they couldn’t be there to shield their children from the horror, to protect them from the bullets?

For the new year, I hope we never forget each tragedy that has befallen our people and use it as a call of action, a call of duty, for change, for beauty, joy, and peace, for our children. I want to hear them laughing again. *Hafiz’s poem, below, is from the book, A Year With Hafiz Pakistan – living the Pakistani struggle, breathing it, tasting it, by Daniel Ladinsky. Each poem in the book is a jewel in itself. hearing it, touching it, feeling it, sensing it, constantly…While the wounds of the Peshawar attack are still fresh and raw, we This Place Where You Are Right Now must not forget similar incidents now carved into our young This place where you are right now, God circled on a map country’s history. planes, trains & automobiles

Travelling is great fun! You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our new section, planes, trains & automobiles! Where did you choose to go and why? We went on a European vacation. Started off in Netherlands, specifically Rotterdam, and moved from there to Paris, then Zurich, Brussels and finally Amsterdam and back. The highlight of the trip was travelling via bullet trains, an experience which turned out be unique and a lot of fun for the kids. Our kids are 9 and 12, so we limited each journey to a travel time of between 4-6 hours. And hence the whole trip with its series of destinations was planned. Also, this way we got to travel around almost all of Europe.

Rotterdam so we went with him and extended the vacation to travel around not only Netherlands, but most of Europe as well. Where did you stay? This time around we decided to rent out apartments in Rotterdam. We stayed at the famous Red Apple building. We stayed at an apartment on the 27th floor with beautiful views of the Erasmus Bridge and most of Rotterdam. In Paris, we stayed near Gaur de Nord station; in Zurich, at the Central Plaza; and in Brussels, at the Novotel.

Who did you travel with? This was the summer vacation and of course it had to be What are the best shopping spots there? with kids and hubby. Shoaeb had some business concerns in In Rotterdam, Lijnbaan is the main shopping street with lots

travel diaries Disney Land would be on the top of my list, not to mention all the historical sites. The highlight of Brussels was the Grand Palace; Switzerland was the lakes, natural beauty and tranquility; and Amsterdam was one big party place with Madam Tassauds, dungeons and concerts.

Suggest some amazing restaurants there? We experienced plenty of restaurants but the most amazing experience was an afternoon lunch on the SS Rotterdam, a cruise ship that has now been permanently turned into a couple of restaurants and a bar. We sat out on the deck of the ship in the brilliant sunlight. It was a fantastic time and the food was also very good. While on our other destinations, we enjoyed the various cuisines and tastes that each city had to offer.

What can you do over there to relax and unwind? I think almost all of the destinations that we visited offer fantastic cafes, so all you need to do is find a good seat, order your food and drinks and just watch the world go by. It was June and we were in light sweaters, just perfect weather to sit outside under the full sun.

Suggest places for a perfect night out I wish we could suggest places for lovebirds but we were with our kids. Our overall nightlife experience was sort of limited. But we did manage to add in a One Direction concert, dinner at fine cuisine restaurants, evening cruises and movies.

With the great tram service, it was so easy to get around from one shopping area to another. Paris was just amazing with tons of shopping on Champs Elysees and many other places. Zurich offered us Bahnhofstrasse with its amazing boutique watch shops, while Brussels was the chocolate hub, with hundreds of unique and specialty chocolate shops near the Grand Palace. Amsterdam was just one big shopping extravaganza!

Let technology work for you instead of vice-versa on Monday. (Hint: Know when to turn off the phone or step away from the screen!) Home and your emotional center are of primary importance over the next few days. You’ll need to get sorted out in your surroundings and your heart before you can turn your energies outward again. And don’t delay — you won’t want to miss the activity and adventure that await around Thursday and Friday! Get outside — you don’t need a plan! And this weekend you might feel picky, but if you let it go a little, you’ll find a lot to love.

Build some variety into your day (or evening) on Monday. The same-old, same-old is gonna leave you cold now, but a little spice gives a big mental spark. If you wanna be a homebody, the next couple of days are perfect for that. Then seeing eye-to-eye with others could be tough around Thursday and Friday, whether at work or in your personal life. Concerted efforts toward listening — and understanding — are required. Then it’s your heart that’s sending off sparks when the weekend comes. Whether you’re part of a couple or looking for romance, the way to heat things up is to say what’s on your mind!

The more, the merrier for you on Monday — the more people you meet, the more conversations you have, the more new stuff you find along the way to feed into the ol’ brain (which is working extra splendidly now, by the way). Then you might be feeling a little less than generous or a little bit jealous over the next few days. It’s not the greatest look on you, so find the real issue and address it promptly! Then around Thursday, Friday and Saturday, lighten up and live life to the hilt — it’s party time, if the stars have their say. But Sunday requires a little more thinking things through.

Beware of the dreaded unintended ‘reply all’ and similar foot-in-mouth slip-ups on Monday. You can get your ideas (and innuendos, and invitations) across way better over the next few days, when you’re extra compelling — and extra hot! Don’t be scared to leave your shell behind, shed an inhibition (or two) and go after what you want. But you’re a little impaired in the decision-making department around Thursday and Friday — what seems like a fantastic idea now could make for problems later. Get some advice and reassess this weekend.

A little more conversation, a little less action pays off on Monday. Get input and get ready to make a more informed, more right-for-you move. And the cosmic energy facilitates this over the next few days, keeping you clear-headed and creative at the same time. Then your hottest days in a long time — maybe all year — are Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Roar! Old favorites, brandspanking-new fun — anything goes now. And with you around, everything’s great! Don’t overlook the allure of a simple starlit evening! On Sunday, though, a practical matter needs your attention.

Double-check that ‘To’ line before you hit ‘Send’ on Monday! Even you might be a little disorganized now — avoid big flubups. Getting things back in order is easier over the next few days, and don’t neglect your social calendar now, either. Find the time for friends and do something new; it’ll all inspire you! At the end of the workweek, circumstances may be less than ideal in some area of life, but there’s another way. Entertain lots of options. And when the weekend comes, the stars are on your side, you fabulous thing! It’s time to get the most out of life — and even love!

You may be of two minds about something (or someone) on Monday. Talk it over, and not just on the surface level — how do you really feel? Then things tend go off track over the next few days, but stressing isn’t gonna help matters. While you’re stuck waiting or wondering, you can still find fun. And when you do that, the other stuff seems to sort itself out! But you can (and should) take a more active role starting Thursday. Your life needs guidance now, and you’ll want to especially welcome and shape what’s new. If you want to just chill out, Sunday’s the day.

You’ll need those amazing analytical powers of yours on Monday. Take all the info into account, then sort it out. Over the next few days, though, get a little more touchy-feely — whether figuratively or literally! Things aren’t so concrete now, and if you can set expectations aside and just explore, you’ll free up the energy flow. Then while your spark is hot, you might try fitting in when it comes to a certain situation instead of standing out around Thursday or Friday. Consider it going undercover! This weekend’s perfect for friends, projects and fun plans — and you don’t have to think too big.

Seeing things as they are — instead of according to preconceptions or others’ projections — keeps you plenty busy on Monday. This vision, though, gives you a real advantage with the questions coming up over the next few days. Get someone else in on looking for answers to make it more interesting, funnier and more fun. Then around Thursday, Friday and Saturday, make the most of what life has to give — and that’s a lot right now! Don’t waste these beautiful days and hot nights. There’s plenty of time starting Sunday for tidying up and chilling out.

Figure out the emotional angle behind your reactions as the week gets going. Heart and mind are especially intertwined now, even if you think you’re being completely logical! A friend who really gets you can shed some light on the situation — providing you explain it thoroughly. Then someone may be calling on you for some help around Thursday and Friday. You should absolutely engage empathetically and do what you can, but know when they’re asking too much, too. And your ideas for this weekend can turn out even better than you’d hoped. Get your favorite people on board, have fun and bond!

Your unique approach outshines others’ same old stuff on Monday. Show your spark! Then health and home need taking care of over the next few days. You might be crazy-busy, but fit in exercise and keep your abode in order, too — physical well-being and surroundings have lots of emotional and mental impact now. And starting Thursday and lasting through the weekend, relationships look very interesting. Figuring out where they’re coming from, where you’re at and how the two intersect — or when they don’t — might be a challenge, but it’s a superrewarding one to undertake.

Practical stuff isn’t where your head’s at as the week gets going, not to mention your heart! Good thing you’re so persuasive — you can get help with the concrete stuff in exchange for your creative thinking or sheer entertainment value. With the right partner right now, there’s really nothing you can’t do! Follow your ideals until sometime Thursday, when, if you don’t get in touch with reality, it’s gonna give you a major wake-up call. Everything’s interconnected, and if you’ll only look from now through the weekend, the stars give you insight about how.
