karachi eat 2015
Last week Karachi ate and we loved it! We got some of the visitors to tell us all about their experience so we can spread the love of food, not only in Karachi, but in every city of Pakistan. never ceases to amaze me. Although I am sadia tariq Karachi not a pukka Karachiite, it seems that the gastro-
nomic map of Karachi has soaked me in - effortlessly! Restaurants, cafés, dhabbas, fine dining outlets, home caterers – one is spoilt for choice to fulfill the basic need to eat. However, Karachi has uplifted this basic need to a new dimension – through awareness, appreciation and attack! The latest and most recent destination on the food map of Karachi was the ‘Karachi Eat 2015.’ This three day long food fest brought together home cooks, connoisseurs, caterers and cooking experts on one single platform housed right in front of the historic Frere Hall. Not without its teething problems of mismanaged traffic and parking arrangements, waste disposal, lighting, timing and uneven walking paths and not to mention the dismal food helpings – it was a commendable effort! Extreme gluttony in one sense, it gave families to get together, enjoy some of the last sunny afternoons of Karachi winter and eat some of the famous and not so famous food items available at a much higher cost at their original outlets. Elderly couples, happy children, peppy music, and vibrant vendors – this food fest has certainly bought everyone together to enjoy food – and I reckon it is here to stay, and it better! everyone seems to be complaining, I had maha javed Though a great experience – I went two days in a row!
The trick was to go early enough to get your hands on all the goodies. Yes, the traffic was intense, but nothing that we Karachiites haven’t seen before. I was lucky enough to try food from most of the stalls – and must say, I was pretty impressed by how many of these first timers were able to cook and assemble their dishes in front of crowds. Instead of complaining about the disorganization of the event, we should be thankful for the organizers for hosting such an event and perhaps offer to volunteer next year to ensure better management!

So the city of lights was buzzing with hype regarding the food festival. The food available there is easily accessible to everyone on this side of the bridge. I did not see anything from Burns road, Ghaffar ki Nihari or Zameer Ansari's chatakh boti. I did not see innovative food, something different from the usual cuisine that we have here in Karachi. I was expecting more of things like Dhood Jalebi, and Lassi from the streets of Lahore and street food from around the globe. The event, which was marketed heavily across the city was unable to manage the turnover of people. The festival was extremely crowded and mismanaged. Although every food kiosk was giving away food in wraps and paper plates there were no rubbish bins to dispose wrappers. The ground was extremely uneven making me confused between the choice of either tripping on uneven surface or running into someone standing nearby. Forget all that, did Karachi seriously ran out of open ground spaces that the organizers had to select an important heritage sight such as Frere Hall to ruin it? There was no system to handle the traffic, and that too at a venue with zero parking capacity. Chaos is what all you will get in the end. Although a huge number of people might have attended the festival but it was a complete failure for me in terms of management and creativity.

syed faheem-ul Islam I rarely get so ticked off at things in Pakistan, since whatever happens we have a standard line "Bhai Pakistan mein tou aisa hi hota hai", but when people build up my expectations and then destroy them, I feel like a bride left stranded at the altar! Organisers have been claiming that there are no parking issues, even when I went on their page to mark my concern so that they can plan ahead, I was met with sarcastic ridicule. Instead of being prudent, the organizers were ignorant. After all, it doesn't matter what hell is outside, as long its great inside. The two or three valet parkers had no idea where to park the cars, and there was nobody handling or managing the traffic. Luckily I managed to fit my car into a little crevice in the Frere hall building, I'm sure KMC or KFC or whoever manages it will send me a notice soon. Anyway (still not over the whole parking issue) but....once you enter the maze, the festival is all right. Last year was spectacular - this year, more people, less planning and the atmosphere that I enjoyed last year is gone. It has become way too commercial. Food stalls are all there, the restaurant stalls are dishing out the same food you get at their outlets, The festival itself was overcrowded, with no space to walk and the sponsors taking up more than half the space.
My bestie and I visited Frere Hall to experience the food haven for ourselves. The service was very fast and the people were very nice, answering all of my questions regarding the food. Though I’m allergic to even the most normal kind of things like, say, cheese, I still had many things to choose from. The best part about this festival was definitely the diversity of the food. Sadly, by the time I left, in true Karachiite fashion, there were tons of paper plates, spoons and cups everywhere, even with the numerous dustbins all over the area. Space was an issue once the place got crowded. Since the sun hardly ever lets down in Karachi, some shade would have been welcome. All in all, the festival was worth the time and money, something to get away from the daily routines, busy work hours and enjoy precious moments with family and friends which has become quite a luxury these days. Pocket friendly prices were set so the attendees could taste a fair share from different stalls and offerings. Diversity of food, family friendly environment, different games for kids and beautiful performances won the heart of Karachiites, which yearn for events as such just to remind them of how diverse, beautiful, fun and food loving the city of Karachi is.
hira anis
The ambience and energy of the City of Lights – Karachi – has been immensely subdued as of late. In order to lighten the mood of the oh-so-cheerful residents of this city, a deliciously lip-smacking and energizing event was held. We, Crafty Cakes, a home-based cakery that participated (AND WON!) in the Cake Off competition held on the second day of this event. We, as well as all other participants, not only got a chance to display our baking talent but also had a good share of the rest of the fun that the event contained. From chapli kebabs and loaded nachos to liquid Nitrogen ice cream and Strawberry samosas, this event had the biggest variety of food to revitalize the taste buds of every single person who showed up! A huge number of food stalls and a very pretty cart set up by the people at T2f (yes, this deserves a special recognition) were there the entire time to entertain us foodies. We loved the exceptional discipline, the subsidized rates, fresh faces (especially those of the lovely AND lively celebrities), and the real essence of Karachi this event offered. It would not be an exaggeration to say that this festival provided Karachiites with an incomparable amount of fun, food, and delight. We left it with a heavy heart and can’t wait for the next big Karachi Eat. We are Karachi!

On my Mehndi, I chose a traditional look incorporating festive colors and lots of layering. The outfit was made by my mother, Farah Talib Aziz, who knowing that I have never before worn red or such bright hues, balanced the heavily embellished scarlet raw silk dhakha with a chatapatti choli and a shimmering paneled angharkha perfectly with my two dupattas. It was a perfect old world silhouette meets new world glamour outfit.

Being a diehard fan of both pale pinks and diamonds, I wore a farshi gharara featuring a net peshwas and an etherial Chantilly lace dupatta. The impeccable detailing, months of intense labor, intricate embellishments and incredible love and effort that was put in by my mother, Farah Talib Aziz, was shining through as the finished dress was truly breathtaking.

Bunto Kazmi did a superb job in putting together my valima outfit. Stepping away from the usual pastel or red bridals, I chose to go with a seagreen shirt, a two tone purple-pink dhakha and a bronze-gold tissue dupatta. She added pockets of color within the bronze work that really made the outfit stand out.

Travelling is great fun! You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our new section, planes, trains & automobiles! Where did you choose to go and why? We travelled to Sydney, Australia for a short holiday because my parents live there, and because Hissam, had a polo tournament there and had to try some horses as well! Who did you travel with? My husband, Hissam Ali Hyder. Where did you stay? With my parents!

What are the best shopping spots there? Bondi junction for boutique shops, and Westfield, Pitt Street (central Sydney) or QVB, for all the amazing Australian designer and high street brands. You cannot go wrong shopping there because you are bound to leave with amazing things that no one else is sporting!! Suggest some amazing restaurants there? Sydney has the best food hands down, from steaks

Tell us about the sights noone should miss out on: You absolutely cannot miss the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House, those sights are to be seen at Darling Harbour. Also, Cockle bay wharf for the nightlife and restaurants. You must check out Hunter Valley as well, which has vineyards and cheese factories, and of course Taronga Zoo.
Finally, any tips? Definitely suggest visiting Sydney at least once in your life, it feels like it's so far away but the distance is the same as to New York. Sydney is an incredibly cosmopolitan city with the most scenic and fabulous sights - in fact exploring Australia as a whole seems like a glorious idea for a vacation :)

Suggest places for a perfect night out: A perfect night out would start with an amazing dinner, preferably at Malaya, and would proceed with dessert at Max Brenner's or San Churro, and then if you're into checking out the nightlife, I'd head on over to the Ivy, or if you like casino's then maybe 'The Star'.

What can you do over there to relax and unwind? Go to Palm beach! It is my favourite beach in Sydney, and check out the restaurant 'Jonah's' whilst you're there for the best fine dining experience with breathtaking views.

You should have plenty of energy as the week gets going if the stars have their say. But when it comes to where you want to direct it, that’s your department. What matters most to you — right now and down the road? Then it’s matters of the heart that are in the forefront on Wednesday and Thursday. The heat is on; if you’ve got a notion, get it in motion! Chances are they’ll love it. But from Friday through the weekend, you’re gonna need to cut people a little slack — including yourself. Being critical is easy; how about creating some positivity for everyone concerned?
Nesting sounds nice as the week begins, so quiet down and rest up. But do get outside for a walk, and do get on the phone — or online — for a talk. You’ve got good energy now if you choose to use it! Then, you may think you know it all on Wednesday and Thursday, but what are the chances of that? At least act interested in what others have to add; you might find the acting part disappears quickly. And — good news — from Friday through the weekend, affection and attachments are in the stars. Who do you love — make sure they know all about it?
You’re just not as outgoing as usual at the start of the week — and really, it’s your prerogative to keep whatever you like to yourself. Wednesday and Thursday are much better suited to engaging in all sorts of interesting interactions, at work and elsewhere. You’ll be way into good conversation, and anyone who can keep up with you is in for a great debate. You’re not all talk now, either! Speaking of talk, though, from Friday through the weekend there is such a thing as saying too much, and it’s pretty darn easy. Concentrate on your main message.
Dare to dream as the week begins, and dare to take action when it comes to going after those dreams. The stars favor the moves you’re making now — the bolder the better! Then around Wednesday and Thursday, you’ve got some great creative power, but you’re gonna have to be focused in order to direct it. Choose a project or two (work, personal, whatever) and block out some time to be imaginative. And from Friday through the weekend, chances are there’s more to interactions and situations than meets the eye. Tune in to the little things for helpful clues.

Behind the scenes isn’t your usual place, but it’s the perfect way to do your thing at the week’s outset. You’ll learn more and develop a fuller sense of things (workrelated and personal) if you’re quiet but persistent now. Then, it looks like you’re center stage around Wednesday and Thursday — dress to impress and bring that awesome smile! Talk about star power. People love your generosity, your ideas and the way you make them feel. When the weekend comes, though, it’s time for some down time. Even you need your beauty rest!
You’re both organized and idealistic as the week begins, and it’s a powerful combination! You can make real headway when it comes to your dreams now. Don’t be afraid to aim high and use all your resources. But you might want to lower your expectations around Wednesday and Thursday, when alternate plans sure come in handy. Cultivate flexibility of mind now — the stars say you’re gonna be asked to stretch! Physical exercise helps, too. Then, you’re an all-star from Friday through the weekend — smart, cool and sexy all at once. The things you can make happen now are huge!
What with work demands, errands you can’t quite get done and important relationship discussions — not to mention some random disruptions that are likely now — time to decompress is gonna be hard to find on Monday and Tuesday. Still, it’s crucial. And don’t fret: Life frees up and everything feels more fun on Wednesday and Thursday, and you’ve got awesome creative powers to boot. Use ‘em in business, in love — your imagination applies everywhere. Then, starting Friday, it’s your powers of perception that are mighty. Look and listen all through the weekend.
You might feel the need to schedule every minute and anticipate every move as the week begins, but serendipity has some sweet surprises in store for you, if you can let go! The time to get serious about life management this week is around Wednesday and Thursday. Work could get sticky, and you’ll need healthy outlets to minimize frustration. Don’t get mad or get even; get exercise, and take things in stride. By Friday, the cosmic energy’s far better, and all through the weekend whatever you do is favored — especially if you gather a little extra info and do a little extra preparation.

While you might not want to talk politics or philosophy at work on Monday and Tuesday, you’ll love getting in-depth at the right place and time. Be sure to leave some freeform room in your life over the next couple of days, when following your nose will lead to incredible things. Your brain’s totally engaged, you’ve got awesome instincts and you’ll know when to say ‘why not?’ Moreover, it’s all great fun. When the weekend comes, though, some nagging issue or details demand your attention — less fun, but necessary. Hint: Don’t procrastinate.
The stars are asking you to do a little bit of housekeeping. Out with the old, in with the new will apply to many possibilities as the week gets going. You might not be totally sure what’s next, but you do know what can go. Then, someone might be stepping on your toes around Wednesday or Thursday. There’s likely room for everyone, but getting clear about boundaries is more politics than shoving. And from Friday through the weekend, you’ll love putting together an awesome plan for work, a personal project or a fun activity — and doing it is looking pretty good, too.
All the input you’re getting as the week begins could be a bit overwhelming, but you don’t have to go it alone. Get together (or get on the phone) with someone who really resonates with you. Once you get those feelings sorted out, you’ll be ready for the charged energy that Wednesday and Thursday bring. Someone or something’s challenging you now; if your initial reaction is to walk away, you’ll know it’s time to stop clinging to what you think you know. Think big now, because come Friday and throughout the weekend, it’s the little things that need attention.
Where is there room for improvement in your life? Monday and Tuesday give you some amazing powers of transformation, especially in the interpersonal realm. Over the next couple of days, however, you’ll need to let the bigger things take care of themselves and get busy being levelheaded about the day-to-day. Your efforts will be especially appreciated right now since those around you are liable to be wound up and stressed out! Then, from Friday through the weekend, keep going with the flow. Life’s meant to be lived, not dissected; you’ll know what to do.
