ABOUT ME:

Saher Qadir CV

Hometown: Karachi, Pakistan College: Rhode Island School of Design, USA Email: esque. furniture@gmail.com

Work Style:

If I have to go to the workshops and into the market then shabby shalwar kameez. Otherwise I live in my plaid shirts and tracks or jeans as I am constantly running around or doing the finishing on a piece of furniture so need to be comfortable.

Tell us a little about yourself. I have grown up in Karachi and come from a large family; I am one of 4 siblings. Academics at school never really excited me so I turned to the Art’s, applying early decision to only one school in America! When I first got to RISD I never thought I would end up in the Furniture Design department. I was more into painting, photography and had thought of architecture as a major but the furniture department at RISD swept me off my feet! I thrive off my work and am extremely passionate about it. I can’t go a day without working and when I’m not, work is always on my mind. I have a loud and fiery personality which shines on most of the furniture I design. I love chocolate and not a day goes by without it! What is your background and training? My high school years were spent at Karachi Grammar School after which I went to study in the US at Rhode Island School Of Design. There I majored in Furniture Design and minored in Art History! I took a variety of classes in differ56

ent fields including glass blowing, printmaking, painting, illustration and interior architecture. After graduating in 2011, I worked in Dubai with Norr - an architecture and interior company, as an interior designer. We worked on projects in Dubai and Iran. I shifted back to Pakistan in January 2013 and started working for YOCA as the lead furniture designer on the HSY AND YOCA EXHIBITION held in Lahore. The success of my tenure at YOCA got me motivated to venture out on my own. I also spent a semester learning the Scottish way to furniture design. I am trained to use all types of machinery in the furniture department, wood working tools, metal smithing, and upholstery. I can take a log of wood, plane it, cut it, saw it and make a table out of it. In other words, I am literally a carpenter! Where do you draw inspiration from? I cannot say that I get inspired from one specific thing, it is often something very random~ Sometimes I get inspired whilst watching a movie, or when I am on vacation, other times by the colour of a car, or even the weather. Inspiration to me comes in different forms and through my daily life experiences as well. I am also inspired by my clients - it is fun and challenging to design a piece of furniture by bringing out a client’s personality, style and taste in it. Who/what has been the biggest influence on your work till date? Architecture by the masters Can you walk us through the design and production process of a single piece? I will sketch and research sometimes for days till I figure out what I want. Once I have finalized the design the item will go through the raw stages of production i.e. wood work, framing, if the material is available, if the project is feasible etc! If I haven’t figured out what finish I want to put on the item I will do it at this stage and will continue my sampling throughout this time e.g. if it is a table, once the raw item is complete I then work on the polish and finish the item myself. If it is a piece for a particular client I will be in touch with the client every step of the way and give them the freedom to work on the item with me. What is your favorite creation so far? I am working on it stay tuned! How would you describe your approach to design? I design with a very open mind and let my imagination run wild and free. I have no rules or boundaries when it comes to design. I like designing eccentric pieces that will really stand out in someone’s home. Contrast is a must, I’d love the clash that my furniture creates in a home. Each item has to be eclectic in its own way! What is something you've learned the hard way in this industry? Do not trust anyone! Do not rely on anyone. The workers are very unreliable and are never able to stick to timelines - if they say they will deliver an item in a week it means a month, they are always always late. Another problem in this industry is the lack of work ethic, or shall I say the fact that there is no work ethic. They have no morals and no standards. It is a hard field to be in because no matter how hard you work you have to be on top of your game 24/7 because of the unprofessional work ethic we face in Pakistan. What is the significance of the name “Esqe”? Esque is a french word and its literal meaning is style. Sq are also my initials and I realised that a lot of people would mispronounce it. It is pronounced as ESK as opposed to s and q. When I first started Esque I didn’t have a set style so I felt it appropriate on both counts. What is the most important lesson you’ve learned as an entrepreneur? Be passionate about your work, love your work otherwise there is no point doing it, No matter what happens your client is always right! What are you passionate about besides your work? Playing around with silk, charmeuse, organza and crepe fabrics with embellishments in structured outfits as well as layering- this collection was one to look out for. With motifs such as elves and mice, clocks and teapots, starry skies, princesses and ponies, in three words this collection was: creative, playful and fun!

muse

ps fw 2 0 1 5 . . .

Muse gave fashion a whole new meaning at PFDC this year. The collection included sheer jackets, boxy crop tops, flared pants, voluminous skirts and embellishments that looked very Parisian. Muse brought their A-game to the ramp and over all the show stood out from all the rest. We predict a lot of the IT girls will be seen in Muse this season!

The collection consisted of black and white with pops and accents of colour which kept us excited throughout the show. We love how we get to see the more and more of the modern side of the Sana Safinaz silhouette with each show. Oversized but finely tailored, western cuts but very simplistic - the SS team has impressed us yet again!

nida azwer

ps fw 2 0 1 5 . . .

The Iznik collection by Nida Azwer consisted of lots of printed silk outfits presented very playfully. We love how she has used a cool watery colour palette, perfect for the season. We find this collection to be quite different from Nida’s signature aesthetics and commend her for stepping out of her comfort zone.

najia qazi This year Najia Qazi stood out in the new talent segment, with her Sadequain inspired collection! Najia was on trend on the ramp with crop tops and skirts and jackets but we especially loved the way she played around with her silhouettes giving some funky asymmetric and fashionable looks.

misha lakhani The “Modern Mughal resort Collection by Misha Lakhani showed lots of modern silhouettes and more relaxed cuts. We love how she has brought back the trend for solid colours, with a bang. Misha has used a mix of textures and fabrics to create off shoulder, sheer tops, wrap skirts & dresses for easy elegancewe love it!

Who says Fahad Hussayn toned down the drama this season? There was plenty of drama in the way Fahad has broken his own rules and played around with unique original prints on a variety of fabrics such as chiffons and organza. Special attention had been paid to detailing with intricate embellishments on tops, dresses and skirts. With this collection we are sure of one thing, voluminous skirts and dresses are turning into his signature style.

The INK collection by HSY was the seasons dramatic finale show. The collection took inspiration from the summer of the cultural subcontinental lands and consisted of some prints on prints, layering, and a varied hemline from one look to another. His designs were rich and dramatic. HSY showed a very diverse collection this time and it was definitely something for everyone.

the iznik collection The Iznik Collection draws inspiration from Iznik and Persian ceramic patterns and welcomes a summer aesthetic full of florals and geometric elements. The collection also embraces the use of animal motifs such as birds and deer, seen in Persian pottery. The collection is based in hues of blue and teal with hints of saffron and is embellished with fine silk thread work, crystal and zardozi in luxe fabrics such as silks, cotton net and net. For this collection, we have focused on structured construction across summer jackets, pants and tops along with flowy silhouettes, the atelier for the first time will also be introducing jumpsuit saris, pants saris and traditional ghararas with a modern twist. Travelling is great fun! You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our new section, planes, trains & automobiles! Where did you choose to go and why? I love islands and have travelled to most of the islands in East Asia but somehow always missed out visiting Singapore! I had heard Singapore was extremely beautiful and relaxing so for a fun relaxing vacation I decided to travel there!

traditional 19th century mesmerizing hotel seemingly unaltered from the turn of the century. It reminded me of the peak of the colonial era with my favorite place being the Raffles Courtyard – an unforgettable experience amidst swaying palms and lush tropical gardens. And my second abode for the trip was Mandarin Oriental, a contemporary modern hotel that had undoubtedly one of the best spa’s that I have ever been to.

Who did you travel with? I travelled with friends who share the same passion of beaches and chilled out vacations. What are the best shopping spots there Where did you stay? The whole of Orchard Street is a haven to shopping, I divided my stay between Raffles Hotel Singapore, a flanked by distinctive and iconic shopping malls. One

The week begins like a storybook, complete with babbling brooks and trees that talk and strangers meeting in the woods and falling in love. Exercise figures on Monday, but it’s fun exercise -- the kind you barely notice. The middle of the week is less dreamy and fun, but don’t stop exercising: It will keep you in good spirits even as the details and the drudgery threaten to drag you down. On Friday you’re happy and charming (it’s so much easier to be charming when you aren’t stressed, isn’t it?) and on Sunday you have all the time in the world to sleep in.

Monday finds you having to mediate a dispute between two of your friends -- and then, horribly, becoming involved yourself. That’s what happens when friends become arbiters! Find a way to back out of the situation gracefully, perhaps by fully admitting that it was never any of your business. Losing face is a lot better than losing a pal. The middle of the week is a corrective to all this early-week weirdness: Tuesday through Thursday is fun and flowers everywhere. Friday and Saturday are exciting, and Sunday is emotionally rich, but, compared to the rest of the week, low-key.

Words come easily to you on Monday, and everyone around you seems to be responding well. If only the same could be said for your communications with your family on Tuesday. And on Wednesday. And on Thursday. You and your family have just hit a rough patch, communicationswise. Meanwhile you’ll be preoccupied by way too much communication (correspondence, phone calls, emails, chatter) in the rest of your life. Until Friday, the spotlight lands on one person -- one person for you to focus on all day and night and all of Saturday, too. Sunday finds you entering unknown territory.

The bigger the better, as they say. You are right there with them on Monday, as nothing is too grandiose for your tastes and you feel like showing off a bit. Tuesday brings a return to modesty somewhat, with you focusing on small details and quality friendships. Wednesday and Thursday you’d do well to spend with friends. Make some plans together (A lake trip?). But on Friday and Saturday, plan to stay close to home because something there needs your attention this weekend. Deal with it directly and it won’t blow up into a crisis. Don’t deal with it directly and you run this risk.

You are a supreme being at the beginning of the week. Top of your game. Better than ever. Whatever you do, let your heart be your guide and proceed with confidence. Unfortunately, on Tuesday, the outside world will give you a bit of a sinking feeling and you’ll find yourself retreating into your own head. Wednesday and Thursday are quiet, introverted days as well -- serious days, in fact -- but Friday is a return to form. Friday is all friends and action and romance and lemonade. The mood will carry on through Saturday. Sunday, check in with the family

There’s too much happening at the outset of the week for you to get a handle on anything. Sometimes being busy is fun, but you’re a little too busy for your own good. Sink a needle into all the madness and let the tension out. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are productive but pleasant -- as fine a time as ever to chart plans and discuss ideas (and, if you have spare time, to tidy up). Shopping figures into your day on Friday -- shopping for something with a partner, likely -- and Saturday has you thinking about money. Sunday, your intellectual curiosity may lead you to the library.

You may not have all the answers, but someone else thinks you do -- and that’s a great place to be. You’re admired. If the group is without a leader and you have what the group needs, step up to the task. You are a good listener (especially important on Tuesday and Wednesday) and grudges slide right through your fingertips these days (especially important on Thursday). Friday, some heavy duty flirting sets your heart aflutter. Your mind, meanwhile, swirls with thoughts of beauty. It’s amazing the unexpected turns life takes. On Sunday your thoughts are all business

Work is worrying you on Monday -- something’s up with the boss. If you find yourself tiptoeing around, well, this is probably smart of you -- your instincts are to be trusted. Being flamboyant and forward is not the answer right now. On Tuesday or Wednesday someone will let you in on a secret that changes your understanding of an issue you thought you had all figured out. On Thursday, doing a favor for a friend makes you far happier than you could have predicted. The key to sustaining this happiness on Friday and Saturday is to be aware and take your time. Sunday is a day of energy and rebirth.

The Sun is smiling on Monday, and you, in this happy glow, can’t help but smile, too. You are the beneficiary of good luck and also some long-timein-coming goodwill. Wednesday and Thursday, an authority figure puts a cramp in your style, but by Friday, you’re getting hugs from friends right and left, for no reason at all. When someone asks you about your hopes for the future on Friday or Saturday, your goals will suddenly seem more attainable than ever. Expect rich dreams on Saturday night; you won’t be able to get them out of your head on Sunday.

You thought you had a certain person figured out -- boy were you wrong! Whatever assumptions you have at the start of the week, drop them. Spend Tuesday and Wednesday doing research. There are so many things you don’t know yet -- you don’t even know all the things you don’t know! On Thursday you’re going to achieve a lot (and you’ll finally start to feel grounded) and Friday you’ll have time to devote to a new project. You go into Saturday with a ton of energy and a goal, but expect the culture around you to take you in unforeseen directions. Friends figure strongly on Sunday.

The car sputters to a stop on Monday. At first you’re annoyed to be by the side of the road, but this is only the beginning of the adventure. Sometimes the most amazing experiences begin with the most unpromising circumstances. This is a good lesson, and it’s something you carry with you the rest of the week. Wednesday and Thursday are business-related, Friday is social but intellectually stimulating, and Saturday you stumble across something utterly, wonderfully, mind-bendingly new. On Sunday, unwind.

Your way of doing things works great for you, but it might not work great for someone else. Ditto your way of looking at things. It’s important not to be bossy, and it’s especially important this week. As wise as your criticisms are on Tuesday and Wednesday, the people you’re around may be entirely uninterested in hearing them. And relationships with the people around you are the key to your well-being right now. When a problem arises with a partner (in either the business or romance realm) at the end of the week, be quick on your toes and solve it right away. No sense letting weirdness linger.
