Instructions from Salina: "Slowly start reducing your caffeine intake, so you can detox smoothly without the fear of a pounding headache. Look through your social calendar and pick a day where you don't have much happening since you would want some down time while you detox. This is a time when you focus on yourself so make it all about you, book yourself for you a massage and pamper yourself. Always remember to excercise will power and just get mentally prepared."

9am:

My alarm has rung- I feel super lethargic and am simply hating everything this morning (I’m not a morning person at all). I have Zero energy and all I want right now is my coffee (caffeine cravings have started). Juice number 1 is minty, sweet and zesty. It contains spinach, kale, cucumber, lime, green apples and ginger and is a metabolism booster. This drink is meant to give my system a kick start to start burning my calories for the day.

It seems like I’ve had more hours in this day than any other. I’ve been more active and gotten more work/chores done. With that said, I have a faint migraine like feeling in my head but it isn’t killing me and I am trying my best to ignore it. The 5th juice is the seasonal rejuvenator- a mix of apple, pineapple and mint. This drink is sweet and refreshing but heavier than the lemon cleanser.

Surprisingly, I’m not feeling hungry at all considering how I am usually starving by this time. I feel fuller and more energetic than ever. Although I’m not hungry, I don’t feel like drinking another bottle of juice either. The 3rd juice I’m having tastes very simila r to the first one and its not at all easy to drink. It’s slightly heavier. This one contains: lettuce, spinach, celery, cucumber, parsley, ginger, lemon green apples and is supposed to be an energy booster.

4pm:

Why I decided to detox: I always felt very tired and lethargic. My mind was always distracted. I had also been getting ill very often and been catching viruses very easily as my immune system had become quite weak. When Salina Taqi, one of the founders of the program, told me about The Ultimate Detox program in Karachi, I did not want to miss the opportunity to bring that upbeat energy back in my body. To note the effectiveness of this program I decided to diary log my one day detoxing experience. Here's how it went:

10pm:

8pm:

was pure e 7th juice which I have just had th freshed makes me fe el re coconut water. It rtant po im ry h is a ve and hydrated whic le bit litt a od fo m. Shaking off thos cheated a little bi ick and water is a light, qu ings. The coconut easy drink.

I feel very relaxed and feel like I’m just ready to go to bed. I had a full productive day. My mind feels focused I am not easily distracted. My stomach is growling for food and my will power is seriously being tested at this point. I do not feel like wasting time streaming various tv shows online. Finally having the last bottle- the almond milk. It actually tastes delici ous. This drink contains almonds, raw honey, cinnamon, sea salts and mineral water. (No milk.) I am literally about to pass out into deep sleep any minute now.

verdict

The next day I woke up at 7am fresh as a daisy ready to take on the day. I felt full of energy, my skin feels hydrated and I couldn't recall why I hated mornings. My mood was generally happier. My skin already looks fresh and glowy, my body feels lighter, stomach is flat and sucked in, eyes bright and mind alert! This detox was amazing- it’s definitely not easy but totally worth it. After speaking to the founders, Salina and Fuzzy, I have now decided to detox at least once every month from now on and would recommend every one else to do the same. I would like to add that one of the things I loved most about this detox was the fact that Fuzzy and Salina were very approachable and available to answer any of my queries throughout the day- it really kept me going!

What are some easy Detox methods one can try at home? The Ultimate Detox, coldpressed juices, caters to everyone! Anyone can call and sign up for a 1-day, 3 day or 5 day Detox that they can do in the comfort of their own homes. We advise clients to do light exercise, or come to the studio for yoga classes as sweating helps release toxins from the body and aids in the detoxification process. Cut down salt, sugar, refined products, from your diet and slowly adding in 1 or 2 juices into your daily routine. What do you say to motivate your clients? Fuzzy: I have found that the best way to motivate my clients is to be there for them 24/7. Whether it’s a call or message, I like them to know they can always reach me. It’s extremely important to give clients the support and push they need to succeed. I find clients don’t have a problem showing up for a workout. Their biggest set back is in their diet and not knowing what to eat.

Jeannette: Keep working on it. Slow progress is better than no progress. If you work hard you will see results, consistency is essential and rewarding. Keep on smiling, smiling make us stronger, be patient and enjoy the process! And finally, what message would you like to give to those who have never joined a Detox or fitness program such as yours because they just don't believe in its productivity? Our program isn’t based on a fad diet or workout. We believe in teaching our clients to believe in themselves, have a positive mind set, set goals, eat healthy, and support them throughout the process. Especially the first few days of the program when they are on their juice cleanse. We only take 20-25 people per session to give each and every client individual attention with their workout and diet plan. It makes us extremely happy when we notice a change in their mood, attitude, mind and body! There’s no feeling like it!

When and how did you begin taking interest in fitness and health? Fuzzy: After quitting my job at the American School, I started to work part time for my mother and did the 7-day Ultimate Detox program that changed my life forever! I never looked back after those 7 days. I felt healthier, lighter, had lost weight, and was generally happier. It was then that I realized how important it is to be healthy in life. Jeannette: My fitness journey started around 20 years ago when I moved to Pakistan to live with my husband in Peshawar! As I could not practice my career in the field of Hotel Management I decided to follow my passion instead to keep productive and happy. I began conducting group classes for my family and friends and the results were very encouraging! I realized fitness was going to be my life and from there.

in their shoes

What steps do you take to maintain your personal fitness? Fuzzy: I train everyday for an hour and do daily classes at the Studio and eat right. I research online on new forms and techniques and go for training programs to Dubai once or twice a year. Jeannette: I am very particular about my diet especially because I need energy throughout the day to keep up with my duties of a mother and a fitness trainer. I exercise daily mixing cardio, with weights, HIIT is my favorite and yoga 5 days a week. It’s extremely important to respect and look after your body. Tell us about The Ultimate Detox and the boot camp program. Initially we launched the 7-day Ultimate Detox program 3 years ago and have since done 8 sessions. 2 things we realized after the 7 days was: 1) People were too lazy or didn’t have the time to make their own juices.

36

PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE

2015

Who was your first client ever? Fuzzy: My close friend Seveen. She wanted to lose weight and be healthy for her wedding. I am so proud of her! Jeannette: My dear friends Nughma Hilfram and Nadia Hussain who have been with me for over 10 years. How would you say your program is different from other fitness programs in the city? Our program is a very comprehensive weight loss program for women. It is designed in two phases: phase 1 is the Ultimate Detox program with the main objective of cleansing the liver to detoxify your body of any toxins which most of the time are interrupting the process of a weight loss program. Once the body is cleansed it is ready to burn fat. That’s when Phase 2 starts - Bootcamp or High Intensity Interval Training. The magic of HIIT lies its ability to keep you burning fat even after your workout. By incorporating intense periods of work with short recovery segments, intervals allow you to keep the workout intensity high while still maintaining form. We do not use any additional product to enhance the process of weight loss. It’s all natural raw juices and the diet is very complete and balanced. Fuzzy is a certified holistic nutritionist. She caters the diet to our clients’ individual needs, incorporating all the essential macronutrients. Our program is also catered to a limited number of participants so we can give them personal attention. How soon is one able to see results after joining this program? Right after the first week of the program our clients start feeling and seeing changes in their body and in their habits. They become more positive, happy, their skin glows, cravings are controlled and they start to enjoy the process, which is the most important part of the program. One has to feel like you are rewarding your body and not punishing it. What is more important, cutting down calories (dieting) or working out (exercise)? 20% of fitness is exercise and 80% is good nutrition. There is no point in working out to lose weight if you’re on a bad diet. Its very important to eat all your macronutrients; fats, carbohydrates and protein to fuel your body. One should not starve the body either. The real fight is in controlling the mind. Do you get impatient clients? How do you deal with them? Jeannette: Patience is a virtue. Clients are very impatient, very eager to lose weight and have unrealistic goals but I always keep on encouraging and pampering them. As a fitness trainer, you need to analyse how each client needs you, and be their support system.

2) People weren’t able to commit to doing intense cardio after the 7-day detox program! Hence we decided to incorporate high intensity internal training; ‘BOOTCAMP’ which consists of strength training, HIIT, Yoga, Kickboxing and this year we have added Zumba to keep our clients committed/focused. We also launched our own line of Detox juices with Salina Taqi, under the name “The Ultimate Detox’.

What are some of the challenges one can face while following the ultimate Detox? A lot of our clients struggle to do a pure juice cleanse. The ones that find it incredibly difficult are those that are addicted to sugar, caffeine, tea and cigarettes. They tend to suffer from headaches due to a drop in blood sugar and nausea; the beginning of the elimination of toxins from the body but mostly withdrawal symptoms. Another challenge is to commit six days a week to a 45 mins a day to training. Social life in Karachi is extremely active, and clients struggle with finding a balance between their workout routine, eating healthy and socialising. 2015

Tell us a little about yourself I was raised in Abu Dhabi till we moved back to Pakistan in my early teens. I spent a few years in Karachi and a decade of life in Lahore, during which I studied Management with Law followed by a Masters in Clinical Psychology and still no remotely passionate interest - until now, of course! Do you have any formal background or training? Not if you count a general appreciation for beautiful spaces and frequent indulgence in home dÊcor shows on TLC! After I got married, I had quite a bit of time on my hands and what began as a simple request from my husband to look into how we could redecorate our space. I spent weeks glued to my iPad till 7 a.m browsing, sketching, re-imagining, and ordering samples from various vendors. Once I realized that what I wanted wasn’t exactly impossible given the resources at my disposal, I fell fast and quick in to what I could only refer to as my true calling. 42

Where do you draw inspiration from? Absolutely everything. A handful of pieces in Aurum’s debut collection materialized from random images and ideas that had left an impression on me over the years. For instance, my mother’s love for the use of coins in jewellery inspired me to create the coin sculptures. Another great source of inspiration has come from meeting artisans. These brilliant minds make so many unsold redundant pieces, a doodle in their own right, that just pile up in a corner of their workspace. I have found such interesting techniques and detailing in their work and have actually incorporated a lot into the pieces we eventually made. A huge part of my inspiration did come from existing furniture and designs that one admires and feels compelled to re-interpret in your own way with the materials and skills at hand. Who/what has been the biggest influence on your work till date? Geometry. It has always caught my attention! Now you can just imagine in daily life, what all that would incorporate! Also, anything and everything monochrome. When I see monochrome my mind immediately goes to how I can either wear it or make homeware out of it, no kidding! What is the significance of the name "Aurum"? Aurum means gold in Latin, and is derived from the glow at dawn. I primarily work with metals especially brass and our signature finish is undoubtedly gold-leafing so the name really resonates the brand’s design aesthetic. Are you planning on opening a store anytime soon or will you be sticking to exhibitions? At the moment, I plan on taking our debut collection to Karachi while working on custom orders and then a followup collection to further expand the range of pieces we’d like to offer. So apart from exhibitions, we are currently operating on an appointment only basis. What do you love most about your job? We are blessed to have such gifted craftsmen who primarily work by hand, as in my opinion a machine doesn’t have the skill nor the talent to copy the astounding texture, design, shape, and model of handmade pieces. I’d say I love the process of sampling and design where we get to really experiment with the materials at our disposal as well as push our entire team to think outside the box and test the self-imposed limits of what they feel they can and cannot create. Can you walk us through the design and production process of a single piece? Since the people I work with often have limited exposure to the kind of design Aurum aims to deliver, every idea starts from a sketch and then embarrassingly enough a digital image where I mash up what I want in the form of images (thank you, Google!). I’ve even mashed up a red frilled skirt to show how I wanted the ridges on a console! We then move onto creating a prototype using cheaper materials and then decide on what material would be the best fit in terms of strength, aesthetic, malleability, color etc. As we primarily work with metals we need to source the best quality available and then go on to produce the first sample of the piece. At the moment we have paired up with a few workshops who do our basic metal and marble work, and then all assembling and finishing is done at our work space by Aurum’s in-house craftsmen. Once the first sample is made, there are often minor adjustments and based on that we perfect the piece and move onto reproductions and customizations. What is your favorite creation so far? After ten minutes of disagreement with my husband who clearly has favorites, I just cannot answer that. I love each and every piece, but most of them more than others so even that list would pretty much be all-inclusive! How would you describe your approach to design? Trial and error where each piece has to cultivate some element of curiosity. I don’t expect someone to fill up their home with multiple Aurum pieces. I imagine them to be the accent, the finishing touch to a space that needs a point of interest, a conversation piece if you will. What is the most important lesson you've learned as an entrepreneur? I have learnt that everything requires micromanagement. What are you passionate about besides your work? I have never felt this adrenalized by anything else before to be honest. 2015

Your life may be full of days spent speeding down the highway toward sweet destiny, but Monday and Tuesday aren’t among them. You’re moving in the direction of destiny, sure, but the pace would be more accurately described as that of an infant on all fours. The crawl intensifies to something more like a healthy jog on Wednesday and Thursday, but it’s difficult to keep your legs pumping, since you spend much of your time holding a cell phone to your ear. Friday and Saturday are days of clarity and catharsis and possibly family time. Sunday’s romantic.

The intensity is remarkable. You had a sense that something was developing between you two, but on Monday and Tuesday, it’s undeniable. Whether this is someone you just met or someone you’ve known for a while, a new leaf is turning, and you’re talking about it. Wednesday and Thursday affect you in funny ways. You’re running around like crazy. There’s no particular hurry, but you’re in a hurry -- it’s completely out of character for you. Friday and Saturday, try to explain it all to a friend, maybe over dinner. Convey your excitement, then spend Sunday dwelling on youknow-who.

Put on your high-caliber goggles and take a very close look at what’s going on. Monday and Tuesday, clarity is a prevailing theme, and the main obstacle in achieving it is the presence of busybodies. Like so many bumblebees, they create a commotion about things that can only be described as irrelevant. False information abounds. Wednesday and Thursday, break out of your zone a bit to interact with others, but know that the most useful conversations you’re going to have will be with strangers. This weekend, you’d be wise to come up with ways of entertaining yourself that don’t involve money.

Some ideas are bound to fail. So don’t worry so much about yours being fully formed -- what matters is getting them out there, proposing things, seeing what sticks. The person who comes up with ideas from scratch is the most important person in the cause of progress. Let others help you hammer out the details. Don’t worry about who gets the credit. In the middle of the week, with all this creativity floating around, some people are bound to feel hesitant or left out. Convince them to participate. Friday and Saturday are about new beginnings. On Sunday, make an investment.

If it were a black-or-white question, a matter of right or wrong, you wouldn’t be facing the dilemma you have on Monday and Tuesday. Putting off a decision is not a bad move. Focus instead on finishing up some projects you’ve already started. Then, on Wednesday and Thursday, air your quandary among friends, at least to hear a range of responses. You may find yourself agreeing with someone, and therefore coming closer to a conclusion yourself. Friday and Saturday are warm and comfortable, as if you’re a happy plant in a fresh plot. On Sunday, you get everything you need for growth.

Great writers do some of their most intense work by staring out the window. Major business decisions have been struck over slices of pizza. Monday and Tuesday, strive to get things done in a relaxing environment. Toward the middle of the week, you have no time for staring out the window or going out for pizza -- in fact, you have to strap yourself to your desk to finish everything. Friday and Saturday are downright frantic, and Sunday won’t be very relaxing either. But if you can be flexible, that will prevent you from breaking. Don’t break!

You’re climbing fire escapes on Monday and Tuesday, trying to get a better perspective on how the world fits together. If only you could be in a helicopter! Toward the middle of the week, you’re in a crowd situation, and you feel both empowered and overwhelmed by other people’s combined energy. Go with the flow. Try not to overanalyze. See what you learn. Friday and Saturday are entirely bereft of dreams of helicopters or the anxiety of crowds -- instead, you find yourself relaxing into your work. It’s gratifying to get things done. On Sunday, listen.

A rare feeling dominates your heart and mind at the beginning of the week. It’s a thrilling feeling. It has something to do with a relationship, possibly a romantic one, and it may inspire you to boldness. Friction, force and sports also figure on Monday and Tuesday. It’s a charged beginning to a happy, productive week, although it would be a stretch to define Wednesday and Thursday as particularly happy. There are a million small tasks you break your back to get done on those days. Friday and Saturday are, by comparison, effortless. You and your friends communicate almost telepathically. On Sunday, you lie low.

Let Monday and Tuesday be days for collecting yourself, getting things back in order and obliging others. The smallest thing can be incredibly satisfying. That remains true at least until Wednesday and Thursday, when the satisfaction you feel in details done well begins to wane. Put another way, a philosophical conversation would satisfy you more at this time. So go ahead and initiate a philosophical conversation. Friday and Saturday, on the other hand, you’re barely able to keep up your end of small talk. One day you feel like talking; the next day you don’t. Chalk it up to mood. Sunday is radiant.

Monday and Tuesday, spread out a blanket under a tree and have a delicious picnic. Fruit, bread, cheese -- really live it up. If you have other things to do on Monday and Tuesday, well, try to squeeze in some time for luxuriating somehow (especially with a loved one). Wednesday and Thursday are more work-oriented, or at least taskoriented. Expect a staggering quantity of emails in your inbox. Then, on Friday and Saturday, aim your efforts toward your home life. Maybe buy some buckets of paint and start that redecorating project in earnest. Sunday is a good day to be at home, too.

A discovery startles you at the start of the week. Suddenly, the past comes into focus in a way that it hasn’t before -- it’s illuminating and instructive. This is a fine prelude to what comes to you on Wednesday, which is a sizzling love affair, or an intensification of an existing love. Thursday, as well, is all hearts and chirping birds. It only makes sense that Friday, coming down from such excitement, is a bit of a drag. You have responsibilities to attend to and you’re running out of time. Saturday is made for working, but Sunday is, once again, all about you and you-know-who.

Beauty and romance figure strongly at the beginning of your week and set you off on the right foot. On Tuesday, eat a delicious dinner and turn in early (hopefully in the arms of someone else!), because on Wednesday, you need as much energy as possible. The middle of the week is a bit overwhelming, that’s all. It’s nothing you can’t handle. However, don’t expect clarity or direction. Then, on Friday, you have time to devote to romance once again, and by Saturday, you’re swimming in the nectar of love and affection. What a happy end to the workweek! On Sunday, work out.
