the significance of ‘pk’ in a world at odds with itself By S o n y a Re h m a n 26

PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE

2015

I loved the Bollywood movie 'PK.' Barring the fact that it stars my childhood crush, Aamir Khan (pehla nasha, pehla khumaaaar!), the movie's message is a significant one, and what makes it even more powerful is that it was released at a time when questions surrounding religion and faith have managed to take center-stage for both the individual and society today... more so today. I have written about alienation before; the lack of true connection in today's day and age of likes, unfollowing, retweeting, unfriending, and fear of intimacy as a result of increasing dependency on technology, the psychological ailments affecting and debilitating a young generation the world over...spawning more alienation, alone-ness, unhappiness, dissatisfaction in a world gone awry. Aamir Khan in a movie still from the flick, 'PK.' God, Allah, The One, are you there? Allah, can you hear me? I hope I've dialed the right number...Allah, make it all better, look you're all I have...God, speak to me, a sign, if nothing else - give me a sign. Faith. Blind faith. What a privilege to believe in something, a higher power with such respect, adoration, to bow one's head in faith, to remain resilient in the face of trauma and scarcity. Belief is a privilege. But in a world such as ours, extreme religiosity at times morphs into arrogance owing to a strange psychosis where one believes one is above the rest, the mind and heart, once released with faith, is blanketed over again, veiled once again. Earlier this month I shared a photo (below) regarding the Charlie Hebdo attack on my public Facebook page which garnered an angry reaction from one of my undergraduate students. 'This is not a religion.' Photo: Stephen Stardom My student private messaged me twice over asking me how I could be okay with cartoons insulting our Prophet (PBUH). My hands shook as I read his message - I was terribly disturbed and yes, fearful, too. I must state, my student is a sweet, shy young man, but the tone of his message was clearly angry. I stared at my screen for a few minutes, wondering how to tackle his message, if it was appropriate for me to dialogue with my student outside the classroom on a topic as sensitive as religion. But at the same time I was gripped by a sense of fear and I

felt compelled to justify my beliefs. So I wrote him a brief, curt message stating that while I found the cartoons insulting, I did not agree to innocent people being riddled with bullets under the banner of religion. I also added that I didn't appreciate his informal way of speaking to me, given our roles, and that respect must be maintained, the teacher-student line, never crossed. The next day, before class was to begin, I asked him to sit with me in the teacher's common room in the presence of one of my TA's, while I clarified my position. Again, what was I doing? Justifying my beliefs. While the short conversation ended on an empathetic note (where I told him, time and again, he was like my child and that personal beliefs/ views must be respected), I walked to the classroom with him feeling at odds. I was upset with myself. Upset with feeling fear for what I believed in - who the hell is anyone to judge one's religious beliefs, or the lack thereof, who is to judge? Who? Throughout the day, I felt like I had robbed myself of something -- dignity? Was that it? Self-respect? I didn't stand my ground, I was on shaky footing, I had a lack of faith in myself, there was no confidence, hence my hasty reaction. I realized, later, I never, ever wanted to feel that level of fear again. Ever. I wanted to cry - the Peshawar attack, the images, the numerous articles I'd read on the survivors and the gruesome details of the entire tragedy was swimming in my head. For all my bravado when I hold my pen to write confessional pieces, my backbone was dissolved to dust with just the slightest provocation. But religion is a personal matter - no matter what number you dial (a reference from the movie, 'PK') to reach God, it is between you and the Almighty. And that is all. But today, politics has obliterated the line of respect for the religions of the world - the media has made a mockery of faith, a mockery of what is crucial for man to believe in, to hope for, to hold on to...And, it has also made your beliefs, everyone else's business. You're either with us or against us, they state.

YOUR FAITH, I RESPECT YOUR FAITH - DO YOU HEAR ME? I RESPECT YOUR FAITH. This week, we hired a maid who, after her brief meeting with my mother, stated; baaji, mein mussalman hoon [ma'am, I'm a Muslim]. Your faith has absolutely no bearing on your hiring, my mother had told her. 'PK' is an important movie for the world of today because it questions the rigidity of faith and religion in a sensitive, childlike manner. The movie, I sincerely believe, stands as a gift for its audiences because it reinforces the notion that each of us is equal no matter what religion we are born into and/or adopt. And it left me wondering: Do our beliefs truly define us? Or do we define our faith? one light What are " i " and " y o u " ? j us t lattices in the niches of a lam p thro ugh wh ich the one light radiates . " i " and " y o u " are the veil between heaven and earth ; lift th is veil and y o u will s ee how all sects and religi ons are one . lift th is veil and y o u will as k – when " i " and " y o u " do n ot exis t what is mos que ? what is s y nagogue ? what is fire tem ple ? – mah m ud s habis tari . 1 4 th century original lan guage : pers ian / fars i . trans lati on by andrew harvey

Almost a month after my college re-opened (schools and colleges across Pakistan were shut down due to security concerns), one of my TA's greeted me with a hug, thanking me for wishing her a Merry Christmas via a Whatsapp message. She was touched. I was a little baffled, and asked her why she was thanking me? Oh because I read a blog online which said that you shouldn't wish anyone a Merry Christmas in Pakistan, she responded with a smile. I was shocked. I brushed it away and rolled my eyes, muttering expletives about the lack of tolerance in the country. At that very moment, I wanted to tell my TA: I RESPECT 2015

Serena zia Being a bride is possibly one of the most difficult processes one goes through! We plan our wedding day and what we will wear years before the actual wedding. Meticulous planning goes into each look from the colour combinations and embellishment of the outfits to the jewellery, hair and makeup. I chose to wear Farnaz Mustafa as she works well with colour. She made me a stunning forest green angarkha which had a beautiful pattern of linear mukesh with flowery vines rising up from the hem. It was paired with a plum dupatta and a gold lehnga. I opted for a soft cascading braid with gota and bead accents. For my makeup, I went with neutral gold eye makeup with a little bit of sparkle and coral lips from Natasha’s Salon. The look was completed by a diamond and emerald set!

Bunto Kazmi worked her magic once again, matching a deep pink dupatta with an exquisite gold lame kameez filled with dabka kora work and magenta resham flowers and a gorgeous golden banarsi dacca pyjama. Shamain completed this regal look with golden eye makeup, smokey liner and deep pink lips. My polki diamonds, rubies and pearls jewellery completed the look.

This was definitely my favourite event. I went to the amazing Bunto Kazmi for my jora, as I knew I could blindly trust her! To match my diamond set from New Era, she made me a stunning flamingo pink heavily worked kameez, complete with silver dabka & nakshi work with a hint of scattered gold tilla rosettes. She paired this beautiful kameez with a salmon peach dupatta & lengha.

planes, trains & automobiles

Travelling is great fun! You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our new section, planes, trains & automobiles! Where did you choose to go and why? Being an avid traveler Bali has always been on my list of places to visit. Post Eat, Pray, Love, it was hard to resist! While researching online, I came across many reviews where people wrote Bali is overrated, too tourist-y and not worth the visit. I decided to experience Bali for myself and am glad I did. Bali has everything. From blissful beaches to lush green rice fields as far as the eye can see; top class spas and cocktail bars; laid back seaside villages, ornate temples and peaceful mountain hideaways. It’s all about relaxing and soaking up the beauty of the place, the island’s nature and the people’s culture. Who did you travel with? I mostly travel with my best friend and business partner of 9lines Saad Shahid. We make sure to refuel ourselves ever so often, taking time off from our tedious and busy office hours. I love travelling with

him because we share the love of exploring new destinations, taking amazing pictures, devouring new cuisines and delicacies, seeking adventure and above all having FUN! Where did you stay? Bali is spoiled for choice with boutique hotels and guest houses, where you can unwind and feel inspired. You don’t have to spend a fortune to find fabulous places. I’ve always been a fan of the cool and contemporary W hotels. The W Retreat & Spa in Bali definitely has the best Sunday brunch in the area and its chic bars host some of the area’s most happening nights thanks to its international resident DJs. W markets itself as a chic and modern hotel, located strategically in the action of all the happening pubs and restaurants, and also in the heart of the lively and fashionable street of Seminyak. The hotel definitely lived up to its promise!

What can you do over there to relax and unwind? Enjoy Bali’s wonderful multi-coloured sunsets in Munduk, the chilled out beach villages of Amed and the beautiful clear skies, against the mountain backdrop. If you’re feeling slightly more adventurous, hop in a cab to Jimbaran Bay, stroll along the beach and watch the sunset and dine at any of the amazing restaurants there! Whatever you do, make sure your camera battery is fully charged. Finally, any tips? Go to Bali with an open heart and arms, a lot of patience and tolerance for large crowds! Avoid the super touristy things and just enjoy yourself here. Finally, there is an unwritten rule about Bali getaway; “When in Bali, do as the Balinese”. Roger that!

Tell us about the sights no one should miss out on No matter where you decide to stay, provided you are on the mainland, I recommend waking up at an ungodly hour to climb Mount Batur, a volcano, and watch the sunrise. This is a once in a lifetime experience which involves some pretty hard work hiking the side of a very steep volcano in pitch black darkness. Once you reach the top and settle in with a cup of tea, you’ll be glad you did it. Despite that one might be trying to escape the “Eat, Pray, Love” trail, Ubud is one place you cannot miss. It is packed and condensed with the best of Bali, ranging from nature, culture and people, temples, museums, rolling rice/paddy fields and man-made gardens and parks. Enjoy

Suggest places for a perfect night out Potato Head is a legendary beach club in Seminyak where you can sip artfully created cocktails while being surrounded by beautiful people. Instead of going clubbing, I would take out time to go to the allnight beach party on the nearby island of Gili Trawangan, where you can dance on the sand to awesome tunes as fire dancers perform in front of you till the sun rises.

travel diaries

Suggest some amazing restaurants there? Bumbu Bali in Nusa Dua is definitely in my top 5 favorite restaurants in the world list. The beautiful and relaxing environment, great service and incredible food is absolutely amazing. I will go back to Bali just to eat here again. Seminyak is also filled with delicious eating spots! The best spot here is La Favella. At first sight, it seems like a small, simple place but once inside, you’ll find it’s rather large and even has a beautiful garden. I cannot recommend the food enough! Other favorites include Merah Putih in Seminyak. The innovative fusion food here tastes heavenly, especially the Sumatran roasted duck curry. There are also some great cafés in Bali. Kafé and Atmans in Ubud are two of my favorites for laptops and lattes, while the Deki warung in Balian is a great place to watch surfers and kite surfers tackle the waves – the beach itself is also divine for a daytime walk.

traditional Balinese dance performances which are held in the evening. Barong Dance performances in the morning are also a must-see! You may take an interesting bike tour or take up cooking, adventure activities like whitewater rafting on Ayung River and other outdoor activities, relax yourself with yoga and meditation or get pampered at the spas! Don’t forget to enjoy the arts and theatres, and of course, the incredible shopping! Make sure to take out time for Kuta Beach. It is the most popular beach in Bali, which means you can be sure to find the life and party scene here. Head here if you are looking out to socialize, party and have a good time. You be sure to find a range of places for different atmosphere and budget, ranging from Hard Rock cafe to your neighborhood cafe and pub.

travel diaries

What are the best shopping spots there? Seminyak has all the high end labels you could need, as well as local, Australian and European designers. In Ubud you’ll find a host of smaller boutiques, independent art galleries and stores selling handcrafted wooden furniture and stunning home furnishings. You will want to have the whole lot shipped back home. My favorite shop was definitely Kody & Ko, modern art and homewares store – think neon Buddhas and floral skulls.

The key to a happy beginning of the week — a week that’s full of accomplishment? Look at the long view, and look at your experiences in the larger context of the world around you. Everything’s interconnected, after all. Around Wednesday and Thursday, some time alone is time well spent; you need to think now. There’s something going on beneath the surface, so uncover it. From Friday afternoon through the weekend, you’re raring to go — anything exciting and different will match your mood, and meeting new people brings great opportunities of all kinds.

Keep an eye out for anything and anyone a bit different at the beginning of the week. A fire drill, a chance encounter with a stranger, a chance to try something you’ve never done — they’re all windows of potential transformation. Jump through! Around Wednesday and Thursday, remember that an important part of relationships is letting people have space and letting them be themselves. Offer open-ended support, and you’ll be beloved. You’ve got charm to burn from Friday afternoon through the weekend, and luckily you’ve also got the smarts to see who’s genuine and who’s putting on an act.

Romance is on tap at the beginning of the week, so don’t save those big dates, big questions or big proclamations for later. Fun and flirtation follow you now. Around Wednesday and Thursday, slow down for your mental and physical health’s sake. Attend to your emotional state — why exactly are you feeling this way? — and also be sure to take care of yourself. For someone so versatile of mind, you’ve got a tendency to cling to your own point of view from Friday afternoon through the weekend. Maybe you’re right, but at least listen to those with different ideas.

Your nice little home environment is subject to disruptions at the beginning of the week. For you, this can be very unsettling, so plan soothing activities out in the world (like a massage or your favorite walk perhaps). Around Wednesday and Thursday, hesitation isn’t wimpy, it’s smart. Gather more information, and get a consultation from a coworker or a friend. When in doubt, just say no. Expect a little tension between your social life and private time from Friday afternoon through the weekend. There are lots of demands on you now; set good priorities and take care of yourself.

If indecision strikes at the beginning of the week, look to those you admire and respect. (Think: Who do I know who makes really, really good decisions?) They’ll be happy to help, and you’ll be glad you asked. Around Wednesday and Thursday, feed your head — you’ll be bored and restless if you’re not learning or doing new things. Meeting new people is extra fun now, too. From Friday afternoon through the weekend, life may involve interruptions and assorted delays. Find a way to kick-start a situation or bring a book to while away the time in a meaningful way.

Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do on Monday and Tuesday, which look to be terrific days for you across the board. You’ve got plenty of energy for accomplishing tons at work — and after hours, you’re hot! Around Wednesday and Thursday, though, work issues may occupy a lot of your attention. Keep your priorities (more money? More free time? Doing good? Making a name for yourself?) in the front of your mind. You’re close, but you’re just not quite getting it at the beginning of the week. Whether it’s a work issue or an interpersonal matter, you need to keep looking to find the right solution. From Friday afternoon through the weekend, however, the good times start rolling again. If you throw in some fresh scenes and fresh faces, the momentum’s gonna get pretty unstoppably great.

Around Wednesday and Thursday, get organized, both in terms of your physical surroundings and your headspace. Figure out where those feelings are coming from and move forward with personal power. You’re not one to give up easily, so avoid doing so from Friday afternoon through the weekend — though you might need to slow down to succeed. It’s counterintuitive, but it just might work.

Your nemesis could become your best friend or greatest ally at the beginning of the week, or you might find that you suddenly like something you’ve always hated. Give it a whirl and transform your world. Around Wednesday and Thursday, your different, deeper perspective may be at odds with that of those around you. Will you tell them about it or keep it to yourself? Everything’s more in balance from Friday afternoon through the weekend, and you’ll love parties, groups and games now. To heck with the status quo as the week begins — you’ve got a bigger, better idea, and it’s time to enact it. If money’s involved, however, make sure you’re not taking too big of a risk. Around Wednesday and Thursday, be watchful and dig around a little. You can find out something now that’ll really come in handy, whether it’s work-related or interpersonal. Speaking of work, take time off from Friday afternoon through the weekend — or at least try to stay away from your boss. Meanwhile, when it comes to relationships, consider carefully how the things you say come across.
