PLBW l'oreal paris Bridal Week 2014 The week brought the glitz and glamour back into fashion, with a three day star studded event with some superb collections.
hsy Nickie Nina Fahad Hussayn Karma RED Nomi Ansari Sana Safinaz Ali Xeeshan Nida Azwer Sania Maskatiya Zara Shahjahan Asifa & Nabeel Saira Shakira Ammara Khan Shamaeel Ansari Misha Lakhani bank AL-FALAH RISING TALENT
asifa& nabeel
Asifa & Nabeel's theme “MeenaManiratna was inspired by the reel life & real life of Meena Kumari. The collection was based on tangerine, gold & grey with traditional thread work, dabka, pearls, stones and chandi pati on pure chiffons, silk, organza & jamawars. We liked the pastel hues but we had hoped the designers would introduce something new & exciting.
hsy This was the first time HSY started bridal week, instead of getting the grand finale on the last day. His collection 'Divine Decadence was in true HSY essence, oppulent & grand. With hand embroidered silks and jacquards the collection was based in a darker colour palettes. We enjoyed watching the show.
karma red Showcased “The Lotus Raj Collection as Day 1's finale, consisting of five capsule collections: ‘RajKumari’ Uns’ ‘Aatish’ Thakuranis’ & ‘Saj Dhaj’,Inspired by the subcontinental’s essence. We liked the styling and the giant jhumkas, but as a collection it failed to impress. Maheen The jumpsuits were quite impractical and looked odd on the bridal runway.
saira shakira Their "Midsummer Night’s Dream Collection", was inspired by Shakespeare’s portrayal of love in all its glory. It was a romantic collection with the use of chiffons and flowy cuts, with hits and misses. We think the duo is a good addition to the fashion industry & look forward to them maturing as designers & finding their signature.
sania maskatiya 'Ara-Ornaments’ by Sania Maskatiya drew inspiration from the art of ornamentation and featured intricate floral patterns juxtaposed with geometrics. We loved the array of different cuts and shirt lengths, introduction of prints in bridal wear & highwaisted pants and ghararas with choli's (often paired with jackets). We love it!
ali xeeshan Ali Xeeshan Theater Studio's “Baghawat” collection was inspired by a mix of the Ancient Roman civilization, warriors & the idea of defiance. We loved the use of lush fabrics such as customised Shanghai, French velvet, French raw silk and jacquard in floor length jackets The collection was quirky & fun!
fahad hussayn “Putlighar", a visual comment on socio-political anthropology, hierarchies and the rise and fall of love lost to war, was brilliant. Fahad Hussayn brought drama to the runway with stunning headgear & showed his true prowess as a designer by experimenting with colour and cuts.
shameel ansari “The Wedding”. collection comprised of pieces for all wedding functions including bridal outfits for trousseau, mayun, mehndi, bari, nikkah and even for sisters of the bride and groom. Most definitely the most wearable collection, albeit for an older audience, Shamaeel showed a beautiful collection.
zara shahjahan “A Folk Tale” was an amalgamation of dramatic colours & oriental prints with heavy eastern embellishment. Zara Shahjahan took a different approach this time and it worked, except the shalwaars which looked unappealing . We liked the intricately worked shawls & chadders & the introduction of menswear.
misha lakhani Misha stayed true to her signature, with her‘Nowruz’ collection, celebrating old world romance with blooming floral clusters, fireworks, birds and bugs. We loved the use of luxe velvet, lame & cotton netembellished with applique, cutwork, floral threadwork, oxidized embroidery and beaten work. We absolutely loved the kimonos & the fact that in true Misha style all the models wore flats (gold khussas).
nickie nina Nickie Nina's “Rumi to Raj collection drew inspiration from the queens and princesses of the Mughal era. Using rich jamawars, lux French lace and plush organza with a combination of zarkozi along with a dash of Swarovski crystals, the collection projected the opulence and grandeur of the Mughal era. It was the duo's best bridal collection yet!
nida azwer Nida Azwer's, " Ghalib Collection" was inspired by the mysticism and poetry of the renowned poet, Mirza Ghalib. In this collection, Nida Azwer worked with hues of blue, navy blue, teal, grey and shades of light pink on fabrics such as silk, net, lame, tissue and brocade. We loved the short shirts, jackets, saris and farshi ghararas embellished with cutwork, crystals, zardozi and resham. As usual, Nida showcased a stunning collection.
nomi ansari Nomi's “Gul collection drew inspiration from flowers. It was a perfect mix of the old and contemporary, the known and the forgotten, a celebration of style with rare embroidery techniques and packaged in a vibrant, colourful fashion. In his signature style he showed a collection that was quirky, fun and fabulous.
sana safinaz Sana Safinaz showed an eclectic mix of contemporary and traditional wear, fused with carefully selected satin, cotton net, tissue, machine work and oxidized kora. Promoting an aesthetic of east and west, the label introduced shorter shirts with exquisitely embroidered shawls. We loved that Sana Safinaz stepped out of their comfort zone and showed a fun, vibrant and young collection, eventhough it was at most a luxury pret/ couture collection with one bridal outfit shown at the end.
ammara khan
Ammara Khan’s, “The Winter Palace", was a celebration of the Russian Tsarina. The collection was luxurious, opulent & quirky. Ammara Khan had employed exquisite age old techniques of embroidery using silver and gold thread with meticulous craftsmanship, embellished with crystals, semiprecious stones and lustrous pearls. Ammara's clothes are for the confident girl who loves bling and is not afraid to stand out.
akif mahmood Akif Mahmood’s collection ‘Virasat’ took inspiration from an imaginary Queen of the Sub-continent who was influenced by different ruling families that have been in power in different eras of the Sub-continent, such as the Sikhs, Nawabs, Rajputs and Mughals. We liked the introduction of long and short jackets, but as a collection 'Virasat' did not impress.
mahgul rashid MAHGUL's “A Wild Rose” collection was the designer’s interpretation of modern femininity. The silhouettes were interesting. We liked the intricate embellishments, layering and the introduction of jewellery, clutches & footwear. The collection was predominately based in fabrics such as nets and heavy silks with embellishment in silk and gold threads, feathers and mother of pearl. A promising bridal debut.
seher tareen “The Emperor’s Assassins”, by Studio S, drew its inspiration from the Chinese cult motion picture ‘Hero’ which was directed by cinematic master Zhang Yimou. The capsule collection featured Chinese motifs such as dragons, cranes & calligraphy meticulously embroidered on rich textures such as velvets with layering in luxe fabrics such as net & organza. We loved the saris, especially the cutwork dragon back on the blue sari.
sofia badar Sofia Badar's, “Tilism” was inspired from the wardrobes of royals of the east and west and a fusion of both. The collection’s colour palette comprised of Midnight blue, hot pink and pale powder pink with accents of pistachio green and orchid. It was a good effort and we saw the new designer experiment with different cuts & fabrics.
wardha saleem Wardha showcased her new bridal collection, ‘Madhubani’, which took its inspiration from Madhubani Paintings, a unique style of Indian painting which is one of the oldest art forms originating from the Mithila region of Bihar. The collection incorporated the creative use of layering of different separates. As a seasoned designer she shouldn't have shown in the rising talent segment.
