Sara (Juana Acosta, Crime Wave SFF19, Perfect StrangersSFF19) cannot believe her good fortune when the opportunity to buy her dream home comes her way. But there’s a catch: the house is not hers until its current owner, 80-year-old Lola, passes away. As Lola smokes like a chimney and drinks like a fish, Sara thinks she won’t have too long to wait. But fate has a different future in mind for Sara and her life takes a very different path. One of Pedro Almodóvar’s frequent collaborators, multi award-winning screen icon Kiti Mánver (Broken Embraces, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown SFF19) delivers an energetic and refreshing performance as Lola, thwarting both Sara and the audience’s expectations about what it means to be an older woman.
Director Bernabé Rico crafts a beautiful tale about women, friendship and life’s little surprises that gently critiques the obsession with more material concerns. Sweet and hilarious in equal measure, One Careful Ownerwarms the heart and provokes the mind.
