Dennis has been diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and is looking to undergo ground breaking treatment in the United States. DJ IN THE FIGHT OF HIS LIFE IN A RACE AGAINST TIME

However unlike the majority of 25-year-old’s, DJ has been given only months to live and is in a race against time to fight an aggressive form of leukaemia.

On September 6, 2013 DJ was told that “that was it”. He had exhausted all his options and he had 12 months to live. He spent the weekend figuring out what he would do with the year he had left.

In August 2011, at just 22, DJ was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia after a lingering cold and breathing problems prompted him to see his doctor. A routine blood test found Leukemic cells in DJ’s blood. DJ’s mother received an urgent phone call late that night telling her of the results and that an ambulance would soon arrive to 2

Since then DJ has endured more than four rounds of chemotherapy, radiotherapy and a bone marrow stem cell transplant, donated by his youngest sister, to treat the disease all without success.

With all conventional treatments in Australia failing, one last roll of the dice for Steph, DJ and his family exists in the USA. DJ hopes to travel to Philadelphia in what will be his final attempt to fight this dreadful disease where he will be one of the first Australian adults to undergo a treatment which is


on the verge of becoming one of the greatest medical breakthroughs of the 21st century. Dr Stephan Grupp at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia is using one of the most notorious killers of our time HIV, to fight leukaemia. It’s a very radical cancer treatment which takes the HIV virus and turns it into a cancer killer. Channel Nine’s 60 Minutes spoke to Dr Grupp about this breakthrough in research and the way they are using the HIV virus to fight cancer. “HIV is a terrible virus but there is a good property and the good property of the virus is its ability to put a gene into cells. We isolate just that good property and we get rid of all the bad stuff so we re-task it to do good in this kind of treatment,” Dr Grupp told 60 Minutes.

The breakthrough uses the extraordinary power of T-cells which are used by our bodies to fight infection. On their own they can’t recognise cancer cells but once armed with the tweaked HIV virus, the T-cells begin to kill the cancer cells. DJ’s T-cells will be taken from his blood and be genetically modified using the HIV property before being re-infused back into his blood stream. Research is in the early stages of trials at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia with only a limited group of patients having undergone the treatment. However among the children who have volunteered for the trial there have been some remarkable results which is very promising for DJ and future trial candidates. This treatment is ground breaking as children who were given months to live are now cancer free. However, this breakthrough treatment DJ hopes to receive comes at a high cost. The cost for his hospital stay and all related medical expenses totals $600,000. The Hall family have sold their family home while DJ’s family and friends have raised $36,000 and are doing everything they can to help. They are just $150,000 short of their mark and need help to reach their end goal. DJ is in a race against time where every little bit helps.
