LOCAL ARTIST TAKES ON FIRST SOLO EXHIBITION HARNESSING THE IDEA OF TAKING AN ORDINARY OBJECT AND MAKING IT WILDLY INTRIGUING, BRISBANE ARTIST LEIGH SCHOENHEIMER’S WORK WEAVES EVERYDAY OBJECTS WITH THE EXTRAORDINARY, ENCOURAGING VIEWERS TO STOP AND PONDER LIFE THROUGH HER COLOURFUL PIECES. For two decades Leigh shared her creative knowledge and wisdom by teaching art at Brisbane’s St Peter’s Lutheran College, but now tunes her focus to working full time in her contemporary Graceville home where she has on-site studio. Ms Schoenheimer discovered her love for painting during an art history class taught by renowned Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Churcher, former director of the National Gallery of Australia and fondly remembers learning from the Australian icon. “At the Kelvin Grove Teachers’ College we studied Cubism with Betty for an entire semester. She was an extraordinary teacher. 2
That semester, I finally appreciated the enormity of Picasso’s ground breaking vision and one that ultimately led to the birth of abstraction. Nothing remained the same in art representation after that, which in turn, made everything and anything possible,” Ms Schoenheimer said. Ms Schoenheimer is now celebrating her launch into full time painting with a solo exhibition, Ways of Seeing/Ways of Knowing featured at the Percolator Gallery, Latrobe Terrace Paddington from July 7-13, 2015. In the exhibition, Leigh has drawn on inspiration from Picasso to encourage audiences to question how they interpret day‑to‑day objects. Ms Schoenheimer’s work has been featured in galleries across the country and was most recently showcased at the Redland Art Gallery where she was shortlisted for the prestigious 2014 Redland Art Award. Additionally, she has been a finalist for a
range of national awards including the 2014 Melbourne Art Prize, Moreton Bay Region Art Awards, the 2012 Redland Art Award and the 2015 Brisbane Rotary Art Spectacular. Inheriting her artistic talent from her mother, Leigh knew from a young age she would pursue a career in art after senior schooling. After facing a predicament of choosing between a conventional or creative career, Ms Schoenheimer married both by enrolling in the Kelvin Grove Teachers’ College with the view to teach art. STARTING WITH A TRADITIONAL STILL-LIFE, MS SCHOENHEIMER DESIGNS HER WORK TO BE READ CUSTOMARILY FROM LEFT TO RIGHT; SHE REINVENTS ASPECTS OF THE ORIGINAL OBJECT THROUGH DIFFERENT PANELS IN A BROAD RANGE OF STYLES. HER MODERN PIECES INCLUDE 3D ELEMENTS REVOLUTIONISING THE CONVENTIONAL STILL LIFE FORMULA FAMILIAR WITH AUDIENCES. “The Ways of Seeing/Ways of Knowing exhibition aims to prompt the question for audiences: Am I thinking about what I am seeing, or am I thinking about what I already know?” she said. “The different panels explore the way different artists interpret reality, from the conventional still-life that many people are comfortable with, to Picasso’s century old interpretation of still-life that could still be considered unconventional by some audiences,” said Ms Schoenheimer. When it comes to property styling, art also plays a very significant role within the sales and marketing process. Property styling married with well considered art strongly enhances visual aesthetic and provides an extra dimension for potential buyers throughout the process; potential buyers and tenants are often seeking an immediate visual attraction and connection and something that makes their heart beat faster upon entering a space. Ms Schoenheimer believes buyers are looking for artwork that can recreate the atmosphere of a room.
“Most people are looking for something special when they are searching for art to place in their homes. Without art on the walls, a home can look impersonal. Good art will enhance a space and enrich the lives of the people using the space. It could be beautiful, uplifting, or thought provoking, but which ever chord it might strike, an original artwork is the unrepeatable product of an artist's mind, eye and hand and as such will be engaging to the viewer. “If people aren't confident about buying art on their own, I recommend they pay a visit to some of Brisbane's many fine privately run galleries and keep an eye on what's being exhibited,” Ms Schoenheimer said. The Percolator Gallery in Paddington will hold exhibitions from eight artists throughout July and August.
