Continuing the esteemed lineup of keynote speakers at this year’s 2015 Place Conference and Awards, Place proudly welcomed Todd Sampson and Maxine Horne to address delegates at this year’s event. Mr. Sampson - who recently stepped down as chief executive of Leo Burnett Australia to move into the new role of non-executive chairman for the multi-award winning agency - spoke about the importance of managing the fear that comes with creative decisions, described the hallmarks of great leadership and recounted his experiences of climbing Mount Everest unguided. “The most spectacular leaders are no braver than everyone else. The difference is they choose to be brave and take risks at the crucial times; it’s my belief that nothing great is done without creative courage, and leaders have an obligation to encourage creativity,” said Mr. Sampson. Mr. Sampson – co-creator of the Earth Hour initiative and on the Board of Directors of both Qantas and Fairfax Media – also spoke about the role of creativity within leadership. “In business, creativity is the last remaining competitive advantage available. I believe that creativity can solve any problem, and the most successful leaders and organisations are the ones that can successfully balance fear with creativity,” he said. Mr. Sampson, the breakout star of the hit ABC show Gruen Planet, co-host on Channel 10's The Project and writer, producer and host of the discovery science documentary series Redesign My Brain, spoke about the practical tools and tips others can use to allow creativity, and left the Place delegates with advice for use during pivotal business decisions. “The real question is: When you are faced with a serious decision to make, can you be brave for five minutes longer?” he asked. Highly successful Brisbane-based Vita Group chief Maxine Horne was interviewed on-stage by Place CEO Damian Hackett, and revealed her recruitment tactics, factors underpinning her business longevity, and the value of marketing.

One part of the reason why we’ve experienced such longevity is that we prioritised the customer service platform. We don’t focus on competitors, we focus on our customers. We focus on delivering value and superior customer service,” Ms. Horne said. “Marketing is vital in any organisation; it’s changing. Today, marketing must be strategic in order to have effect – we must use targeted, direct marketing and make an effort to understand customers. “It’s also imperative that leaders enforce a great business culture,” Ms. Horne explained. Place’s Annual Conference and Awards, held at Palazzo Versace on the Gold Coast, is a significant event in the Queensland real estate industry and is backed annually by an impressive lineup of world class speakers.
