The style of summer With Brisbane’s weather well and truly warming up, our attention is drifting towards well deserved holidays, Sunday barbecues with family and friends, and long lazy afternoons by the pool. It’s timely that we address the hottest property styling trends for the season ahead. We spoke to property styling expert, Lindsay Southwell from Signature Property Styling about the latest trends for styling your home for sale over summer. So what’s hot right now?
THE BEST PLACE TO SELL YOUR PLACE
LINDSAY'S BASICS THE LIVED IN LOOK. Rather than the clichéd display home feel the 'lived in look' is the look for summer. Increasingly we will see the best designers create homes that families can see themselves in. We're moving away from the stiff and the formal towards chunky linens and messy beds. It's likely we'll see the return of the tea tray at the end of the bed and an open magazine on the lounge. We’ll see meticulously placed clutter and an over supply of stuffed cushions. And, in what may seem surprising to many, Ms. Southwell believes Queenslanders can draw inspiration from people who live in colder climates, such as those design savvy Scandinavians.
While it can take an expert’s eye to master, Lindsay believes with a little trial and error, even a novice can benefit by following some of the basic guidelines:
SCANDINAVIAN THEMES. Those Scandinavians have always had a warm eye for style, and it is quite easy to reference their welcoming charm without looking like a spread from an IKEA catalogue. The key is in the use of bold highlights, such as strong geometric patterns, pastel colours and oak timbers.
1. L arge pieces like rugs and sofas should be a neutral colour. Light grey is a hot colour for sofas. 2. Natural fibres and textures make a great backdrop. 3. I ntroduce timber for occasional chairs, floor lamps and dining tables in small doses to bring in warmth. 4. Use lots of cushions on your lounge and mix up patterns, texture and colour for interest. 5. C olours to look for this summer include navy, coral and mint. Add a splash of silver or gold cushions to take it to another level.
