It’s often said that taking the road less travelled pays off. For DesignByThem founders Nicholas Karlovasitis and Sarah Gibson, this is undoubtedly the case. In 2006, as fresh University of Technology Sydney design graduates, Nicholas and Sarah diverted from the typical path of finding a comfortable graduate job and instead, created their own design brand. Now representing a collection of Australian designers under one company with a shared vision, DesignByThem fashion a diverse range of furniture, lighting and accessories which represent a flawless balance of character and clear-cut function. With a resilient focus on sustainability and commitment to utilising quality manufacturers, their designs reflect everyday Australian living with a spirited twist. Taking everyday products such as chairs, tables, hat stands and letterboxes and making them innovative and durable, DesignByThem and their collaborators are turning mundane elements into a visual showcase.
In 2015, DesignByThem opened their first showroom in Chippendale, Sydney as an extension of their energetic design studio and workshop. Effectively tapping into both commercial and consumer markets, their studio offers a platform for designers, suppliers and clients to come together and collaborate on custom furniture designs. “We have a design first approach that is reflected in our products. We hope to share that with our customers by giving them a chance to come in and see for themselves. We want to educate people about the importance of Australian design and not just about our products” says Nicholas. Since their establishment, DesignByThem have brought together some of Australia’s most talented designers under their collective brand.
A highlight for the pair was when they collaborated with renowned designer Stefan Lie on a custom piece. The ‘Ribs Bench’ now proudly sits in the foyers of the famous Sydney Opera House. "It was a huge honour to produce The Ribs Bench with Stefan. He is such an inspiring designer” says Sarah. With another successful year underway for the brand, DesignByThem are carving their way as forward-thinkers on the international design scene. Signature product launches include the TomTom Letterbox with designer Tommy Cehak, and The Bobby Stool designed by Daniel Tucker from Jam Factory in Adelaide.
