A sea of purple.


In the spring time, a vibrant array of lavender and violet hues contour the streets and coat the lawns. For Brisbane residents, this sea of purple is a friendly acquaintance that is reminiscent of a warm festive season spent with loved ones. If you’re a local, it’s more than likely that you have been graced by the enchanting presence of a jacaranda tree.

Rich in history, some of Brisbane’s most celebrated tree-lined streets have jacarandas dating back to the 1920s and 1930s. The presence of jacarandas grew even more in the 1960s and 1970s when the Brisbane City Council illuminated the parks and streetscapes by planting more of the trees and supplying them free to residents to plant in their gardens. Now, we get to enjoy this luminous sea of purple as it comes to life all over the city and our local neighbourhoods each year.
