Spaces are ever transforming entities. In their course of transformation, the spaces often seem to lose their identity, history and context. Accepting Heraclitus' declaration of 'Panta Rei' (change is the only constant); the focus of this work is on how to steer future change towards the better. The selection of site is therefore vital- The Eastern Waterfront of Mumbai is poised on the threshold of great change.
Migration at the Seoul river turned the beautiful stream to trash and dump collector. Then concreted with the highways due to the industrialization, improved the economy and the condition of the city. Finally, the stream was beautified and the history and culture was restored.

This thesis presupposes that the designer would not have the luxury of regenerating the entire eastern front through massive urban planning. If Plan 'A' is to rejuvenate the whole Eastern waterfront through massive urban planning, then this thesis embraces the 'B' Plan. It proposes subtle insertions of different scales which, it is hoped, would create a domino effect on surroundings to influence future proposals toward the subversive (but positive) intentions of the designer.

The site is unique in its character with patchwork of varied activities woven together in the fabric. The area is active with iron and steel trading, ship breaking, metal scrap trade, small scale industries, ship building, wooden markets, storage and transportation of goods, informal settlements at the waterfront, defunct docks.

SITE A
The site is flanked by waterfront on one side and the iron and steel market on the other side. It is currently occupied by underused warehouses and patches of waste lands. These warehouses store the raw material needed at the iron and steel market. But this use is very temporal. This remaining iron and steel market would be very soon shifted to Navi Mumbai, like before. Thus, this site needs to be designed based on the current and the future possibilities (new varied patchwork).

The processes of ship breaking and making have been carried out around this site since last few decades. These activities are dying out due to the dock shifting to JNPT. The stage of ‘cutting’ in ship breaking and ‘fabrication’ in ship making is identified to be the stage to be recreated on site. These stages of breaking and making the ship is paused and the frozen stage creates an experience of these processes and allows one be to be part of them for the first time. Such an insert contemporary, small yet strong is important to give back the city.

Mazgaon Fort, locally known as the Joseph Baptista Gardens, is a 1.5 acres park and located at the Bhandarwada hill. The gardens are located behind the Dockyard Road railway station, at an altitude of 32 metres. The designer realised the need to provide access for the people to the fort as the intervention at medium scale. This access would not only make people come to the fort but also create an awareness of the existence of the fort and its history. This path cuts through the rock to reach the fort. It starts from the junction of the entry to the Dockyard station. The path gives access to the existing platform of the station and further takes one in, towards the fort. The reality that one is walking through the rock is retained as the experience of the walk. The light into the passage is provided through the skylights cut through the rock.

The idea is to create interacting spaces around the drain. These spaces are designed as per requirement of the surrounding spaces, connections of programs and providing them with breather spaces. For this purpose the drainage is divided into zones depending upon the programs around. Then depending on the zones created the required programs are inserted. Also new medium of transport (cycling tracks, ferry and boat system) for releasing the heavy vehicular congestion. This would generates lot of new activities which increase the use of our insert in various ways.

The proposed cycling tracks aim at connecting institutional and residential nodes, thus providing a new mode of transportation and reducing load on the main arterial roads. The tracks are modulated as per fringe conditions near the fishing village: slums, mangroves & reserved ground Viewing Decks for joggers and cyclers. Our aim in this project was to study the current urban site conditions of the nallah and its adjoining spaces and propose an intervention to either enhance or change the existing urban context. As a starting point, we observed the nallah as a connector and facilitator of various nodes, junctions and programs. Based on this we added or "injected" new programs to make use of and enhance the nallah.
The current vehicular density pattern and influx of people into JVPD scheme suggests an ever increasing number of vehicles on road that cause congestion to the main artery roads. Hence along with the breakout zones for the institutes, we provide new Mode of transport system - cycling tracks for all kinds of users. - boat system throughout the nallah as well as to this part of the city.

The Blue City, Jodhpur, has a very rich and unique fabric. The terrain creates the different layers of houses and other structures. The houses within the city are shaded throughout the day due to the narrow lanes and by lanes. The chhajas that shade the fenestration are very prominent while walking across the streets. The layers that weave the fabric in all the X, Y and Z axes are analyzed through Overhangs–Projections –Levels. Using this study, a hybrid program-Hotel and Residence is designed at the center across the Navchowk. A 3d mesh was created using two kinds of wires-Flexible and rigid. Rigid wire indicates a projection in the z axis due to the terrain which remains constant. Flexible wire indicates a projection in the x & y axes due to the structures forming the street which is under constant change. The joint where the two meet forms a node/junction.

The chowk at McLeod Ganj is characterized by the chaos created because of the convergence of sloping streets towards the chowk, which is relatively flat and hence an open market. The chowk is alive with mainly tourists. The Tourist Reception Centre is sited at the chowk facing the valley. The centre is connected to the chowk through a ramp from the main reception deck and as well from the other end via a souvenir shop . One experiences the spaces, with internal and external experiences co-existing via the staircases. The unidirectional path of the design allows one to experience the spaces as a journey.

The design has flexible spaces for different programs that cater to different age groups. The form was generated due to the spatial overlaps. Overlaps were the main core of the design concept to create a sense of confluence. The overlap depended on factors like time, the use of the space and the connectivity between the spaces. The site is at Bandra Reclamation near the National Highway facing the Sea. The site conditions for vantage have been considered while designing the layout. The public plaza is the most unique feature of the design.

Dynamic fringe condition
JUHU, MUMBAI, INDIA
#SketchUp #AutoCad #Adobe Photoshop #Corel Draw
The land-water fringe is forever in a state of motion, hence it’s very dynamic. Furthermore, Juhu beach being the most densely populated beach in Mumbai, has the unique quality of having a plethora of activities taking place at any given time of the day. A mechanical system that translates the movement of the tides and turns it into movements within the insert is used. Linear bands that criss-cross and overlap create a unique form, with recreational areas and spill out spaces forming between them. The juxtaposition of the static components and the dynamic components of the insert reflect the nature of the two elements that come together in such a peculiar fashion at the fringe condition i.e. the static land mass, unaffected by time, meets the dynamic water, and the result is a constantly evolving fringe condition. The changing volumes serve as a graphical and visual indicator of the current tide levels, and in cases of extreme tides can serve as a warning beacon. Mechanism

The project explores conical geometries and Aggregation Systems towards the computational growth of doubly curved surfaces. The surface to surface constraint condition driven by the dimensions of the cone, including differential radii across the length allows for conditioning of space and structure, driven by aggregation parameters. The semi translucent nature of the material allowed for exploration of lighting conditions, both natural and artificial. Testing of the ‘System’ for self-loads conditioned by inherent material intelligence progressed into a multi-point suspension system allowing for precise articulation and positioning of the said ‘System’. The loop is an installation based on the combination of two studies - the creeper and the healing of a wound. The interonnection of a single sheet inform the rolling of this sheet and the different sections being formed are also shaped by the varying 'sections' involved in the healing process. The anthropometric profile were shaped based on the program of it being a 'lounging space' within the corridor. In terms of materiality and structure, the single sheet is actually a lamina of overlapping sheets of plywood folded over and reinforcement with timber joists at the floor and seating levels. and the sag in the profile of the installation is countered with suspension cables supporting the larger spans of the loop.

Concepts from which the idea of the apple picker was inspired
The design for the Apple Picker was inspired by :Cutting action of a scissor which was used as a component in a system to achieve the required height and hand movement while joining hands to pluck the apple. Both these concepts were merged together and made using wood and fabric. The system allows to pick the apple almost 6ft high. The Scissor movement is used by multiplying the component to form the unified system which would extend to perform the movement. At the top of this system, the plucking movement is performed and the apple falls into the space created through the fabric. The system is easy to use and only one arm Is required for execution.

The extreme light and dark situations imitate the suffocation caused in traffic
Movement of traffic mapped during peak hour
Elevation of the proposed installation mimicing the experience of one in a traffic jam
Product + Individual
Urban Physical Condition selected for the study was when one is stuck in a slow moving traffic. The vehicles keep changing their paths as the movement progresses. The mass and void thus keep changing constantly. The path and movement of the vehicles were observed during slow moving traffic. It was analyzed as when one object moved, other slowly start moving towards it or whenever a void is formed the mass slowly fills it making it more congested and suffocated. The project emulates this condition and makes one experience the extreme conditions of light and dark. At the center of the walk where the light is absent, the floor rises and falls back creating a surprise event which is also experienced in the urban condition.
view of the curved wall from the exterior
The project was centrally designed based on the user - the toddlers, kids and the administrative staff and hence the use of playful elements. The two most fascinating characteristics about this project were: The facade was built in ferro-cement with the skin modulating differently externally and internally. The interior walls on the first floor were curved forming areas for kids toys and playing area separated from the circulation space.

Eight villas were proposed alongwith a clubhouse as part of this project. My involvement was to prepare design drawings and presentation drawings for client Mr. Pramod Jain. Pondicherry bye-laws were considered. The villa was designed in an attempt to connect the beautiful refreshing natural and the man-made world. The total built up of the villa is 2776sq.ft. The outdoor pond, deck and green spaces form the main landscape elements for the villa. The transformation from one space to the other also has been softened and curved. Vastu also had been considered during the orientation of spaces as client’s requirement.

The First Year Foundation Workshop focuses on the concept of assemblies and dis-assemblies. In the first phase of the workshop, machines were procured and disassembled into its individual components. Each component performs a simple, specific function such that when they are assembled, they perform complex and efficient operations as a whole. This process was documented through a series of exploded drawings and animations. The second phase documents a part of the city from Ville Parle Station till Juhu beach. Activities performed in this stretch were analyzed as a series of repetitive processes that form a part of a complex mechanism that is the City. The site is viewed as a number of simple components that are assembled to perform like a complex machine. The studio was held by professor Dipal Kothari Chhaya, where I played the role of a teaching assistant involved in studio work, guiding students throughout the design process and making drawings, models and setting up the exhibition.
