Gaza Reconstruction 09 May 2017

Page 1

Following up on Donors’ Pledges The Cairo Conference (October 2014) to support the Recovery and Reconstruction efforts in Gaza, resulted in raising USD 5.1 Billion. The latest update of the Cairo conference pledges, carried out by the World Bank, in cooperation with the National Office for the reconstruction of Gaza (NORG), reveal that:

Total amount that has been paid reached USD 1,796 million, representing 35% of the total pledges at the Cairo conference. Total funds received in 2016 were USD 200 million, supporting programs in various sectors such as: humanitarian aid, UNRWA budget support, Government budget support, housing and infrastructure. Only USD 57 million (out of the USD200 million) were earmarked for Gaza Recovery and Reconstruction program . As a result of the delays that have been encountered in 2016 and the slow-down in funding of pledges made at the Cairo Conference for Gaza Reconstruction, many planned interventions have been postponed and delayed. This will lead to a decline in improving the economy and the return of life to normal in the southern provinces.

pledged amount at Cairo Conference

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has pledged USD 500 million at the Cairo 2014 Conference to support the Gaza reconstruction and recovery efforts, thus making the Kingdom the second largest Donor among the 53 countries and International institutions that pledged their support. The Kingdom’s support to the reconstruction and recovery efforts is diversified and multi-sectoral and includes interventions and programs in the Housing, Education and Culture sectors. The bulk of KSA’s support is directed towards the Housing sector. The housing program comprises rebuilding of over 1,300 totally destroyed housing units, over 2,000 severely damaged housing units and around 14,000 partially damaged units. The reconstruction and recovery programs of KSA are implemented through International Agencies, namely the UNDP and UNRWA.
