Modern Social Work Theory, Fourth Edition, January 2014

Modern Social Work Theory is a worldwide best-seller renowned for its masterly overview and measured critique which come together to offer a complete and authoritative introduction to theories of social work practice. It draws on literature from across the world to trace the origins of social work ideas and how they develop, as well assessing their role and value based on scholarly debate and research. Compact and clearly structured, the book breaks down key issues in a way that is easy for students to grasp. As with the previous edition, the book is composed of two parts: Part I presents a general discussion about the place of social work theory in practice, while Part II reviews groups of related theories, from psychodynamic perspectives to ideas about humanism, existentialism and spirituality. 9780230249608 January 2014 | Paperback 464pp | ÂŁ27.99

Within Part II, each chapter has been significantly developed to follow a common structure which supports navigability and reflects the likely manner in which students will approach the text.

Unrivalled coverage Modern Social Work Theory 4e is the only book on the market to provide both general discussion of the relationship between theory and practice and a comprehensive theory-by-theory breakdown of theoretical approaches for practice. There is no other book which combines these two elements with such depth or sustained attention. This is a book that students can trust to explain all the key issues in a clear and systematic manner. In terms of the theories included, Payne provides an unmatched spread across psychologically-influenced and social theory, and a balance between classic and contemporary theories (such as solution-focused and strengths-based approaches). As such, students will find this book a great-value investment which ticks all the boxes regarding coverage.

Consistent focus on application Unlike other texts in the field which discuss how to apply theory to practice in quite a broad way, Payne explains both what the general issues are and the practicality of using each theory. Students often struggle to link theory to practice, particularly when they go out on placement, and the consistent structure of each chapter in Part II ensures that they will grasp the strengths, weaknesses and practical issues relating to each theory when applied in practice, preparing them for assessment for professional qualification.

Author pedigree Malcolm Payne’s social work books were recently described as ‘the most translated and read that we know of’ (Joint SWSD Conference website, 2012). His ability to translate ‘big ideas’ into clear, authoritative prose is renowned. For this edition in particular, Malcolm has paid close attention to the writing style to ensure that this is attuned to the needs of social work students at the start of their course, without sacrificing the academic rigour which ensures the book’s relevance through subsequent years of study.

WHAT’S NEW?

1. Recognises the full breadth of social work theory Reflects newer theoretical developments as well as classic theory, and includes new material on strengths, narrative and solution focused approaches.

2. Consistent chapter structure Rich in pedagogical features: each chapter in Part II follows the same order of discussion, with many new pedagogical features to help readers digest the material.

3. Writing style Responding to feedback that discussion had become too condensed and formal over the course of previous editions, the author has rewritten the book from the ground up, in a clearer, more step by step manner so as to improve its accessibility for a range of learning needs.
