The wait is over; Save-On-Foods opened for business on November 22, 2019!

While the village is home to many shops, another grocery store has been high on the community’s wish list.

Adam Rondquist is Steveston’s Save-On-Foods manager. He is thrilled to be involved in opening and managing this location.

He says, “The word on the street has been extremely positive. People are excited to have a new grocery store in Steveston. We hope to draw shoppers to the village and see the other businesses benefit as well.”

He is aware that winter and summer are decidedly different for village traffic but is hopeful that Save-On-Foods will bring people out year-round.

Adam feels particularly invested in this launch because he grew up across the river in Ladner, and is very familiar with Steveston.

He worked at Save-On-Foods in Ladner when he was a student; thirty-five years later he is a senior manager who has had the good fortune to open new locations as well as organize leadership and engagement workshops. He says, “I like what I’m doing.”

When asked what makes Steveston special, Adam replies, “Right away, it’s the fishing community. The historical connections to Atlantic Canada can be seen in the street names such as Moncton and Chatham.

The store conveys a village feeling through colour choices, wainscoting, and historic elements. Adam hopes to see window paintings of fishing boats featured in the large storefront windows. Adam mentions, ”Building relationships with a team is very important. Today’s workforce is very diverse both culturally and with a wide representation of ages. Being flexible is very significant and being adaptable is also of utmost importance. Building and picking a team is exciting; it influences a store’s culture from opening and it affects morale. I embrace change. I like new and different things.”

The products will speak to the value of supporting local, based on seasonal availability,” Adam says.

Being a 100 per cent locally owned company distinguishes Save-OnFoods from other grocery stores. Since it’s early beginnings in 1915, the company has taken pride in partnering with local producers including B.C. beef and produce farmers as close by as Delta.

Save-On-Foods spotlights and promotes these producers through signage and “in-store every” campaigns.

Each Save-On-Foods location is customized to give customers exactly what they want. At the Steveston store, you will find Grab and Go meal solutions such as sushi, hot wings, and restaurant offerings for today’s shoppers who have less time to spend on creating meals. Customers can also expect to find natural and healthy foods.

The store features an in-house bakery, deli and meat department.

This location is the smallest Save-On-Foods at 20,000 square feet; the entrance will be on Third Avenue across from the Steveston Hotel. Save-On-Foods pharmacy is detached from the store and is situated around the corner on Moncton Street.

Giving back to the community is a large part of Save-On-Foods mandate. Schools, sports teams, community events, clubs, and the biggest benefactor of them all, B.C. Children’s Hospital, are all generously assisted by the company.

Adam says, “Community involvement is very important to us. Save-On-Foods is already an active sponsor of the Steveston Salmon Festival and we intend to assist other non-profit fundraisers.”

He concludes, “It means a lot to me to come to Steveston at this point in my career. I am excited to be part of this community. It’s a beautiful location.” Welcome to Steveston village, Save-On-Foods!
