FYidoctors - Dunbar
FYidoctors, formerly Pacific Eye Doctors, has been part of the Dunbar community since 2004. Founding partner optometrists, Dr. Mockler, Dr. McNab, and Dr. Vetsch established their first clinic in Richmond in 1986, and in 2004 opened the Dunbar location. That year Dr. Brooks came on board as a partner to assist with offering excellence in eye care.
In 2008, the company joined the larger Fyidoctors group. This has allowed them to continually reinvest in technology in order to provide exceptional eye care.

Dr. Brooks says, “The name change reflects our shared belief that patients should come before products and that eye care should always be our primary focus.” She adds, “We are doctorowned and doctor-led.”
Dr. Brooks reports, “Dr. Vetsch has retired and Dr. Mockler is semi-retired. In addition to myself and Dr. McNab, we have four associates: Dr. Terynn Chan, Dr. Sarah Hagedorn, Dr. Ashala Mah, and Dr. Russell Tong.”
FYidoctors continues to offer an extensive range of services including comprehensive eye examinations, management of eye disease, fitting and dispensing of all types of contact lenses, eyewear, and sunglasses.

Dr. Brooks says, “We are continually updating our procedures and equipment based on the most recent vision research and science.”
COVID-19 has impacted the way all businesses operate. Dr. Brooks comments, “As doctors, the health of you and your family is our top priority, which is why we have implemented a new examination process with enhanced safety procedures.”

She continues, “We are trying to limit the number of people in the clinic at any time. We are taking appointments for exams, pick up of glasses and contact lenses, and also for any patients who want to look at frames. We have launched a new ‘Virtual Personal Shopping Experience’ that allows you to connect one-on-one with an eyewear consultant, view and virtually try on frames, and make online purchases on our website (www.shop. fyidoctors.com) for those who want to shop from home. Our retail website offers contact lenses, sunglasses, and is expanding to include OTC eye drops, eye vitamins, and dry eye products. We offer curbside pick up of glasses and contact lenses. We also have extended our hours; Monday we are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday’s hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., but Tuesday through Friday we are open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. for the convenience of our patients. We have only one optometrist in at a time, again to limit the number of people in the clinic. We’ve been able to keep our full staff of optometric assistants and dispensing opticians employed through the early stages of the pandemic and as of our reopening in late May.”

Your eye doctor will recommend the frequency of eye examinations (every 6, 12, or 24 months) based on your age, current ocular and general health, as well as your risk of developing eye disease.
Dr. Brooks remarks, “We continue to utilize the Optos wide-field retinal imaging, visual field analysis and we have recently added Zeiss OCT retinal imaging (Optical Coherence Tomography). This non-invasive test takes cross-section pictures of the retina. All these instruments continue to improve our ability to diagnose and monitor eye disease including glaucoma, macular degeneration, retinal detachment, diabetes, and hypertension.”

Optometrists can diagnose and prescribe prescription medications to treat many common eye disorders and diseases including eye infections, allergies, inflammation, abrasions, and dry eye.
FYidoctors’ manufacturing lab in Delta is one of the few left in Canada and is a new ‘stateof-the-art’ facility. It provides 200 Canadian jobs and provides the most technologically advanced lenses at competitive prices.

Giving back is important to the Dunbar FYidoctors. They have sponsored the Dunbar Little League since they started the practice, and routinely support local schools with donations.
In addition, FYidoctors has created the ‘Enhancing Life Foundation’, which helps Canadian charities build stronger communities and happier families so that more people can see a brighter future. They also participate in the Better Sight/Better Grades program. This program’s goal is to provide accessible eye care to every child through comprehensive eye exams and corrective eyewear so that all kids can perform to their fullest potential.
October is Children’s Vision Month. It is important to have their eyes checked regularly. Provincial eye exam coverage is often available for children under the age of 18, but FYidoctors encourages you to call if you have any questions.
