Steveston's Healthy and Philanthropic Gelato Shop

Geoffrey Sun has been attracted to the colour gold since he was a child. Perhaps it has to do with his surname? Geoffrey is the director of Mr. Gold Holdings Ltd. His dream to launch a “golden brand” came to fruition in 2019 when he opened Mr. Gold.

The historic Moncton Street storefront was built by Iwajiro Wakida and was part of Steveston’s reconstruction in the early 1900s. A fun fact: The building was used as a film set for the television program Once Upon a Time.

“It was a lucky coincidence that we found this location. Customers are excited to come inside.”

A major renovation was required to transform the space into a cozy parlour-like atmosphere. A variety of seating areas have been created by pairing tables with an assortment of upholstered armchairs. Gold wall mouldings add to the ornate theme with some accent walls painted royal blue. An eye-catching pink and blue painting titled “Blue Orchid Towards the Sun,” is nestled between two slim shelves displaying fine china cups and saucers. A long glass display case is where you will find a rainbow of assorted gelato.

The store’s roots began in Saskatchewan under a different name with a focus on desserts. After moving to Richmond, Geoffrey saw an opportunity to open his handcrafted gelato shop. He chose Steveston based on its beautiful location, and he was also aware the village is a tourist destination.

He mentions, “Steveston’s store owners and residents are very kind and helpful.”

At any time, there are 36 flavours in the display case; some of the selections change weekly.

Based on the season, there are as many as 100 flavours in store. Geoffrey says, “Pistachio, mango and Mama’s lemon pie are some of the most popular choices.” Other temptations include tried and true classics like chocolate and vanilla alongside unique tastes such as tiramisu and whiskey cream.

Mr. Gold’s artisanal gelato is made with fresh fruit, whole nuts, Avalon organic milk, cream, and cane sugar. The shop is dedicated to making premium gelato with techniques that originate from nineteenth-century Europe. Vegan gelato and sorbets are also sold.

In addition to the vast range of gelatos already offered, custom orders are also welcomed. Customers can suggest an idea and their oneof-a-kind flavours can be created.

The store is open year-round (with reduced winter hours) and while it is not typically the season to stroll along the boardwalk and eat gelato, it can certainly be an indoor treat, however, Mr. Gold’s is not limited to gelato. They also serve authentic Italian pastries, croissants, lemon tarts, macarons, cupcakes, sandwiches, and four types of Italian-style paninis to enjoy at the restaurant or you can place an order for takeout. Customers also have the choice to make their panini a meal by adding salad, tea, and gelato.

Afternoon tea is another key part of the business. The menu offers three teas: The Elegant Afternoon Tea, The Golden Afternoon Tea and Mr. Gold’s Family Party Tower. Depending on your order, the tiered cake stands may include an enticing assortment of savoury locally sourced seafood selections such as smoked salmon, black truffle, horseradish on pumpernickel bread and prawn, avocado and salmon roe with basil mayonnaise.

Sweet items may include finger sandwiches, scones, lemon meringue tarts, chocolate mousse cake and tea at different price points to accommodate any size of group. Mr. Gold also provides kid-friendly options.

Events of all kinds can be hosted at the restaurant, you envision it, and Mr. Gold can make it happen. Business meetings, baby and bridal showers, birthday parties and anniversaries are all a natural fit. An engagement party or small wedding reception would also suit this space. Some fun promotional events have taken place including an afternoon tea for princesses. Offsite, Mr. Gold’s gelato cart can be hired for private events. If you would like to have afternoon tea at home you can order online, and Uber will make the delivery. If you have a craving for gelato but don’t want to leave home, in just two hours Mr. Gold will deliver gelato right to your doorstep. Every order is carefully packed to ensure quality upon delivery.

Mr. Gold is a franchise with additional storefronts operating in Kelowna, Maple Ridge, and Victoria and more locations are on the way. Geoffrey operates the Steveston shop with the assistance of his wife and son.

Geoffrey says, “We understand the importance of a strong and united community.”

The business actively participates in fundraising and community work. Throughout the pandemic, volunteers have prepared gelato in cups which they pack in freezer boxes and transport to frontline workers in gratitude for their dedicated efforts. Recipients have included the Vancouver Police Foundation, Richmond Fire and Rescue, Richmond Hospital, and many other Lower Mainland hospitals. The company plans to continue participating in future community work.

Geoffrey appreciates the support he has received for his new business during these tough COVID times. He says, “We really enjoy serving customers fresh and healthy gelato as well as doing charitable work for the frontline workers.”
