Celebrating 10 Years in Kerrisdale

Ten years ago, Monica Min and her husband Jaehoon Kim had a dream to open a hair salon in Kerrisdale. Monica and Jaehoon aspired to become the leading Japanese and Korean hair salon in Vancouver, and their clients agree they have attained their goal.

The couple is originally from South Korea, where Monica began her career as a hairstylist; they moved to Canada in 2006. Monica worked for a salon in downtown Vancouver until Luxor Hair Salon opened in February 2012.

Jaehoon manages the company’s accounting, marketing, and reception, and Monica is the salon’s director stylist.

The salon’s white interior, floor-length mirrors and laminate wood flooring create a modern, clean, and elegant environment.

Jaehoon says, “The salon is extremely spacious. With the addition of plexiglass dividers, we have been able to carry on business quite normally during the two-year pandemic.”

Six senior stylists work alongside Monica: most of them have worked in the hairstyling industry for over ten years. Their customers range in age from babies getting their first haircut to seniors getting cuts and blow-dries.

Colouring options include root touchups, full colour, bleaching, half and full lights, balayage, ombre, foilyage and design colours.

Pastel colours continue to be on-trend. Balayage remains very fashionable; this technique looks like sun-kissed highlights throughout the hair. The transition is more natural and involves less maintenance than ombre.

Perms are another large part of Luxor’s business. Some clients seek a perm for volume, while others look for straightening perms. Men’s down perms are also very popular.

The salon offers Japanese three-step treatments, Kerastase, Olaplex and scalp treatments, hair extensions, and makeup applications for proms, weddings, and other special occasions.

Every appointment begins with a consultation. Luxor’s team takes pride in listening to their clients. The stylists are honest about what they can and cannot do. Their goal is to create the perfect cut or colour.

Monica enjoys seeing clients’ transformations.

She says, “To see people happy with big smiles makes me happy. I like to help make clients feel beautiful.” She adds, “I want to style hair until I no longer can. This is my dream.”

A loyal customer base attests to the salon’s success. Many clients have been coming to Monica for fourteen years, and good friendships have formed.

The business is open every day except for Christmas and New Year’s Day, which is perfect for people who desire a Sunday hair appointment.

Monica and Jaehoon believe in giving back to the community through silent auctions and donations to fundraising events. Some clients donate hair to Wigs for Kids BC to improve the quality of life for kids dealing with cancer or other life-threatening illnesses.

Jaehoon appreciates Kerrisdale’s strong community, their loyal customers, and the relationships they have built. He says, “As merchants, we care about each other. We like to support each other’s businesses.”

He concludes, “We have seen some clients grow up. Milestone events have come along. Some customers have graduated, others have got married. It is meaningful to see generations come to Luxor and share their lives with us.”
