“ETERNAL LIGHT 21C THE LAST JUDGMENT”
Inspired by Michelangelo’s masterpiece, The Last Judgment, artist Han Ho’s Eternal light - 21c The Last Judgment addresses epic physical and metaphysical issues. The nine-part massive multi-media panel work re-imagines and recontextualizes an apocalyptic, end of the world scenario to the 21st century —constructing an afterimage of humankind facing environmental disaster, colonization, gender violence and nuclear annihilation.
Using traditional art techniques combined with technology, HanHo creates multicolored light-infused immersive worlds that shift and ebb in front of your eye. Nearly all the figures depicted in the work are the artist himself —performance, history, war, future, and fantasy, all blend together in this massive panorama of humanity. “Eternal Light,” as the artist calls it, bathes his canvases and elevates his worlds to near mystical proportions.
Will this eternal light uplift humanity from the ecological disasters swiftly approaching? Will we have the ability as species to avoid our own destruction? Who will judge us, finally? These questions under-gird HanHo’s “Last Judgment” and create a space for us to contemplate them and our future. -Ara Oshagan
