JULIANO: MAN OF THE YEAR

The Flagler County Young Republicans received high honors from the Florida Federation of Young Republicans at the 2016 Annual Convention in Melbourne, Florida. Patrick Juliano, President of the Flagler County Young Republicans, was named the 2016 Florida Federation of Young Republicans “Man of the Year.” Florida Federation of Young Republican Chairman Robert Foste said, “Whenever we needed something to get done, we called on Patrick, and he would go above and beyond the call of duty.”

manda Waldman, 27, lights a candle at a vigil in Flagler Beach for the victims of the shooting at the Pulse gay nightclub in Orlando. “It’s overwhelming, to see this much support,” she said. Waldman’s business, Magik Audio, provided sound support for the vigil. She said she hasn’t always felt entirely safe in town when she’s been out with her girlfriend. “You get the stares,

you get that kind of walk-to-the-other-side-of-the-sidewalk thing. This really shows you that the people who aren’t accepting really are the minority now.” PAGE 3A

Waiting for a sunny day ...

Palm Coast City Councilman Bill McGuire may move out of state before his term of office ends in November. McGuire had announced after his wife, Sandie, died in January that he would not seek re-election, and that he planned to move to Missouri to be with family. “Without Sandie here, there’s nothing for me in the city, and I do intend to go back to where my family is,” he said at a City Council meeting June 21. McGuire said he is selling his house, and has a closing tentatively planned for July 29. The new owner will then have the right to take possession. “If I can stay beyond that, I will,” he said at the meeting. “But it does not look like I will make it till November.”

FLAGLER IS Hundreds crowd Flagler Beach to honor Pulse shooting victims JONATHAN SIMMONS NEWS EDITOR

T

he crowd of about 700 watched a lone figure climb to the top of a fire truck ladder hoisted high above Oceanshore Boulevard across from the pier, high above the roofs of the tallest buildings, then cheered as she strung a gay pride flag to a cable hanging from its apex. The American flag followed. As dusk fell June 17, candlelight flickered across hundreds of downturned faces as people gathered on the beach with lit candles in a moment of silent recognition of the 49 people killed by a gunman at the Pulse gay nightclub in Orlando. For a few hours June 17, Flagler Beach was a place for LGBT people and those who care about them and about the Pulse victims to gather among friends and mourn — a safe haven in a world that felt more dangerous than ever since the June 12 shooting, attendees said. “It’s overwhelming, to see this much support,” said Amanda Waldman, 27 and a Flagler Beach resident. Waldman’s company, Magik Audio, provided sound support for the vigil. She said she hasn’t always felt entirely safe in town when she’s been out with her girlfriend. “You get the stares, you get that kind of walkto-the-other-side-of-the-sidewalk thing,” she said. “This really shows you that the people who aren’t accepting really are the minority now.” The city of Flagler Beach donated 400 candles for the event. Local businesses donated items to be raffled off to raise money for the shooting’s victims. The donations and raffle raised $1,721 for the Pulse Victims Fund, organized by LGBT rights group

ORLANDO

STRONG Equality Florida, vigil organizers said. Local politicians and officials attended the vigil, among them Flagler Beach Mayor Linda Provencher, Flagler Beach City Commissioner Jane Mealy, County Commissioner Nate McLaughlin and Sheriff Jim Manfre. Speakers urged solidarity and thanked attendees for their support. “I’ve lived here for 22 years here in Palm Coast — never in my life did I ever think that this whole town would come together to support human equality,” Quincy Black said, addressing the crowd through a speaker system set up on the bandshell next to the pier. “Most of the locals here that are a part of the LGBT community know Pulse like the back of our hand. That was one place we could go, because there’s not many around here.” Flagler County doesn’t have any gay clubs or bars of its own. When Palm Coast resident Tina Luciano, 25, created an event on Facebook for a memorial candle lighting at the pier, she didn’t expect much of a turnout. Maybe 25 people, mostly members of the LGBT community. But people started sharing the event on social media. Soon, more than 400 had signed on to attend, with hundreds more marking themselves as interested — far more than she’d expected for the vigil. “I knew it meant something to people, but I had no idea it was going to mean so much,” she said. Luciano and friends got in

touch with the city government, which waived its usual event fee and provided the Fire Department ladder truck, and police officers to direct traffic. Luciano said she’d gone to Pulse for the first time the day she turned 18. “It was our safe place to be who we were,” she said. “A lot of people from the Jacksonville/St. Johns area, St. Augustine area, all made their way to go to this one place.” Luciano’s friend Corey Zywics helped organize the vigil and had planned to speak at the event. He was too emotional. Luciano read his speech for him: “We are here today to be strong and show support to the fallen in our community. ... I’d like to give a special thanks to the individuals that support the LGBT but aren’t part it the them-

selves. You support us in the fight against hate and discrimination. You are the people making the change. You stand strong with us now in a time of sorrow. For that, I can not thank you enough,” she said, reading Zywics’ statement. Speaking to a reporter during the vigil, Zywics said that Pulse was one of the first gay clubs he’d ever been to. As he walked into the club for the first time, he said, “An older gentleman looked at me and said, ‘You don’t accept it, do you?’ He said, ‘You are home. Your community supports you.’” Life in the days after the shooting has been “a rollercoaster,” Zywics said, but the vigil helped. “It’s so much more than I ever could have thought of. It makes me feel so much better,” he said. Waldman hoped vigils like the one in Flagler Beach could help the shaken community recover. “I think it’s a start,” she said. “The first start to healing is accepting, and we have to not look for a scapegoat. ... There’s one person who was responsible: the person pulling the trigger. I think once people really start to grasp that, that’s when the healing will really start. I want people to know that our community is a strong one.”

Tina Luciano organized the vigil, with help from friends in the LGBT community. When she created the event on Facebook, she expected about 25 people. Around 700 attended.

Residents placed signs honoring the victims and supporting the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community alongside a collection of lit candles placed in the sand at the vigil.

“I would not ask anybody to raise your hand, but raise your hand,” Public Defender Jim Purdy said to laughter when the subcommittee discussed civil citations for possession of alcohol under the age of 21. Members agreed to add possession of alcohol between the ages of 18 and 21 to a list of crimes that could be handled with a citation under the proposed ordinance.

Flagler County residents nabbed for certain minor first-time offenses may be able to avoid jail time if a proposal under consideration by local officials is taken up by the county and local cities. The proposal is to reduce punishments for first-time possession of marijuana under 20 grams, possession of cannabis drug paraphernalia, possession of alcohol between the ages of 18 and 21 and, potentially, disorderly conduct to civil citations for first-time offenders. That would mean that, for instance, a cop who stopped a car, smelled marijuana and found a joint in the driver’s bag could decide to issue the driver a fine similar to a traffic citation, rather than charging the driver with a crime. The driver, applying to jobs years down the road, could then

check “no” on a box on a job application asking them if they’ve ever been convicted of a crime. “The idea, as I understand it, is to take that individual who makes a mistake first time out of the box; we want to allow that person to preserve the essence of their life,” Palm Coast Mayor Jon Netts said at a Public Safety Coordinating Council Subcommittee meeting June 21. “We still have officer discretion. ... I think that law enforcement — they can tell an innocent kid who’s trying it for the first time from somebody who’s hooked on the stuff.” The fines wouldn’t be huge — maybe $250, subcommittee members proposed. If unpaid, the fine would turn into a civil judgement. But the proposal would be tough to enact if all of the local cities don’t take it up, and Bunnell’s police chief, Thomas Foster, does not support it. “I’m not in favor of decriminalizing it,” he said. “Bottom line is, there’s too many

contradictory cities which we will not be able to track. ... If the state comes down and has a unified policy just like our juvenile citations, then I would be in favor of it, but right now there’s too much confusion and different jurisdictions are doing different things.” Sheriff Jim Manfre, who has spoken in favor of a civil citation program, said that calling the measure “decriminalization” isn’t accurate. “This is not decriminalizing marijuana. That would have to come from the state,” he said. “This is a civil citation program.” The number of people affected by the program wouldn’t be great. Of about 83 marijuana arrests last year, Assistant State Attorney Jason Lewis said at the meeting, only 22 would have met criteria for the proposed citation program. A small group of residents attended the meeting wearing blue shirts in support of the proposed change, and a few addressed the subcommittee during public comment. “These are people who are making mistakes,” said Sims Jones, a local pastor and NAACP chapter vice president who is running for Palm Coast City Council. “Those are the ones that this is going help.” Anita Moeder, also a candidate for Palm Coast City Council, said, “We all screw up once in a while, and I think that it’s a wonderful initiative, and I hope that everyone will back it.” County staff will draft an ordinance for the program. Elected boards for the county and individual cities will then have to decide whether to enact it.

FSA 2016 ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS SCORES PERCENT LEVEL 3 OR ABOVE:

The Florida Department of Education on June 10 released state assessment test scores. The percentage of Flagler County students getting scores of three or higher was higher than the state average in Florida State Assessment English language arts and math tests at all grade levels. “While there is always room for improvement,” Superintendent of Schools Jacob Oliva said in a school district news release, “what’s encouraging is, in English Language Arts, we have exceeded the state average of Level 3 and above at every grade level. In math, we either met or exceeded the grade level state average for students scoring 3 and above at every level.” Flagler County students also made gains in civics and eighth grade science end of course exams, according to the release. “We look for trends, and we’ll use this data as we implement our continuous improvement model,” Oliva said in the news release. “We’ll start planning for next year on areas we want to address.” To view detailed test scores, go to fldoe.org/accountability/assessments. The Florida Standards Assessments test students in English Language Arts and mathematics. End of Course Exams test students in science, civics and U.S. history.

Meet Gardner 1 and Gardner 2

PALM COAST

Observer “If we are to build a better world, we must remember that the guiding principle is this — a policy of freedom for the individual is the only truly progressive policy.”

Don’t forget that being a father is the most important ‘job’ you’ll ever have.

BRIAN MCMILLAN EXECUTIVE EDITOR

If you’ve been to the tax collector’s office, you might have noticed a 20-something young man wearing jeans and cowboy boots. He says “Yes, ma’am” and “No, ma’am” with a magnificent Southern drawl. And the tone of his voice sounds exactly like that of Jay Gardner, Flagler County’s property appraiser, whose office is directly upstairs in the Government Services Building. “Excuse me,” you might ask this young man. “Are you related to Jay Gardner?” Yes, he is. It’s Adam, the youngest son of the property appraiser. In fact, Adam said he gets asked if he’s a Gardner three or four times per day. I asked him and his father if they’d be willing talk to me for a Father’s Day story, and they

Observer was too dismissive of my accomplishments as Flagler sheriff Dear Editor: The Palm Coast Observer in an editorial two weeks offered their opinions on the issues of trust worthiness and qualifications for the office of sheriff. Rather than opinions, I offer these facts. I have lived and worked in this community for 20 years with my wife of 33 years, Cornelia. All three of my children have been educated in the Flagler County school system and have gone on to distinguish themselves in their careers. My daughter, Catherine, graduated with her MBA from the University of Virginia and now works for a large management consulting firm. My son Alec graduated from Georgia Tech, has his own start-up company and was just listed

both reluctantly agreed. Adam was especially reluctant: As he walked upstairs to his office, he warned me that his dad was a “talker,” and so to be prepared for this to take a while. Jay Gardner was wearing a blue sport jacket and khaki pants, but no tie. (Let’s not get too formal, here.) He reminded me during our conversation that he’s from “Missippi.” “Mississippi?” I asked. “I probably leave out a little bit,” Jay said with a grin. “I get there a little quicker than most people.” Later, he said that when the family comes back from a trip to Mississippi, “We twang a bit more.” “I told you he’s a talker,” Adam said to me. I had stolen Adam from his job for a few minutes for this interview, so I decided to get started. We already knew how they were similar, so I asked the two men how they were different. “I’m better looking,” Adam said with a deadly serious expression. “We got no time, so we gotta be serious,” Jay scolded him.

The serious stuff was as follows: Jay is very proud of his son. Adam lives on his own and works hard at his job, which was by no means a gift job. He started out at $8 per hour in Tax Collector Suzanne Johnston’s office and, as she told me earlier, Adam does a little bit of everything and is quite valuable for his versatility. Seeing him paying his own bills is “one of my prouder moments as a dad,” Jay told me. “You’ll be there one day.” That sounds like a long way away for me: My four children

are between ages 1 and 12. But I’m sure it will come soon enough. In the meantime, I’ll be happy with my own memories of this year’s Father’s Day. To conclude, I want to pay tribute to the fathers in our community. When it gets especially difficult — when you are stressed out and working hard and feeling like the world isn’t paying any attention to you — don’t forget that by loving your children and providing for your family in whatever way you can, you are already doing the most important work in the world.

in Forbes Thirty under Thirty. Barret is attending Duke University and has been awarded a Marine ROTC scholarship. Cornelia has been a prominent commercial real estate broker in Flagler County for 17 years. I have been the sheriff for eight successful years and also have practiced law in this community for eight years. I have been a past president and member of the Flagler County Rotary for 15 years, a member of the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and Santa Maria Del Mar parish councils, a board member of the Florida Hospital Flagler Foundation, the Volusia Flagler Boys and Girls Club, United Way and Coalition for the Homeless. Let me review my accomplishments during my two terms that you have casually dismissed in your comments. I have: • Constructed a new precinct, a new operation center,

and a new Detention Facility — all under budget and with more space than originally projected. • Implemented body cameras for all patrol deputies. • Achieved FCSO patrol re-accreditation and communication accreditation for the first time. • Implemented the purchase of 70 new patrol vehicles, five new motorcycles and a new patrol boat. • Reduced the prison population by 15% through prison diversion programs. • After five years of no raises, implemented an employee step plan, which raised employees’ salaries by 7%, that is based on seniority and merit. • Implemented community policing, which is based on treating citizens as customers. • Created Flagler Sheriff’s PAL that now has 1,000 youth participants.

• Reduced crime rate by 10% over three years while population increased by 10%. • Partnered with the Florida Attorney General’s Office to create the Seniors vs. Crime Unit at Palm Coast Precinct. • Created new Crime Scene and DNA unit. I believe that my experience, community involvement and accomplishments prove decisively that I am the most qualified and trust worthy candidate for sheriff.

MAN SAYS $8,000 IN FISHING GEAR STOLEN FROM DOORSTEP 2:37 p.m. First block of Beacon Mill Lane. Larceny: A 42-year-old man ordered a $7,000 solid state marine radar and antenna and a $1,132 transducer from an online fishing company. The packages were supposed to be delivered to his front door. He got a tracking number, and the tracking data showed that the packages had been dropped off at his home the evening of June 16. But the man never got them. He called the Sheriff’s Office. ACCUSED SHOPLIFTER BITES STORE EMPLOYEE 7:14 p.m. 100 block of Cypress Point Parkway. Aggravated battery: An employee at a local big box store saw a woman pull tags from shaving items and stick the items in her purse, slice a cell phone from its lock peg with a pair of scissors and place the phone in her purse, and then appear to steal things from the fishing aisle. Two employees confronted her, and she tried to run, then bit one of the employees who tried to stop her, “causing deep impressions and bruising breaking the skin” on his arm, according to a deputy’s report. Deputies arrested the woman, a 27-year-old who’d been arrested nine times before in Flagler County on charges including probation violation, shoplifting and selling drugs. Among the items she’d tried to steal was a $20 family pool and a Boost phone.

BRIEFS Man charged with threatening to shoot girlfriend When 38-year-old Daniel Douglas’ girlfriend said she wanted to end the couple’s relationship, he pointed a rifle at her and said, “If you say another word I’m going to shoot you,” according to a Sheriff’s Office report. The incident began the night of June 19 as an argument over rent at the couple’s Tangerine Avenue home in the Mondex, the victim told deputies. She called the Sheriff’s Office at about 10:40 p.m. By then, she said, Douglas had taken the rifle and left in a red Chevy Blazer. When the victim said she was leaving him, Douglas began to “wreck the whole room,” throwing plates, ripping papers and flipping a table before threatening her with the rifle, a deputy wrote. While deputies talked to the victim, another Mondex woman showed up at the house, asking for Douglas’ phone. She told deputies that Douglas was at her home. They went there and spoke to him. He said he’d argued with his girlfriend that morning but didn’t remember why, and that he didn’t point a firearm at her and didn’t even own a gun. The victim had shown deputies a sleeve she said Douglas had removed from the gun before aiming it at her. When a deputy mentioned the sleeve to Douglas, he said he didn’t know anything about it and that he’d been at the Ash Street woman’s house since morning. Deputies charged him with aggravated domestic assault with a deadly weapon.

2-year-old endures multiple organ transplants JACQUE ESTES COMMUNITY EDITOR

Harper Allison isn’t your typical toddler, though you wouldn’t know it to see her — unless she raises her shirt to show you the scars that map across her body. Harper was born with gastroschisis, a condition diagnosed when her mother, Jessica Bontempo, was 20 weeks pregnant. “They told me I was having a girl,” Bontempo said. “Then the doctor came in and said there was a complication. Her abdominal wall was not formed and a small part of her intestine was outside the wall.” Bontempo talks about procedures and diagnosis as though she has a medical background. She is a bartender at Smiles Nightclub & Bar and the Dog Pound Saloon. Harper was born on Aug. 20, 2013 in Orlando — 5 pounds, 5 ounces, and five weeks early. Hours later, before Bontempo would get to hold her second daughter, Harper was in surgery. “There was no hospital locally that can handle these cases, so they told me my options were Jacksonville and Orlando,” Bon-

tempo said. After talking to both, Bontempo decided on Orlando because she didn’t want to induce labor. “I believed that if she came out on her own, she would be able to handle the surgery better,” Bontempo said. Bontempo explained the procedure by drawing a diagram of how Harper’s intestines had looked. “I really have learned so much,” she laughed. “Dr. Jennifer Garcia (of Holtz Children’s Hospital) took time to teach and educate me and break it down in terms I understand. Then I had to educate my family, so I could take an hour and go to the store.”

By the time Harper was 5 months old she had been through five surgeries, and still hadn’t been able to come home. Harper was taken to Holtz Children’s Hospital in Miami. There they learned the intestines weren’t the problem any longer – the baby’s stomach wasn’t contracting as it should and a transplant would be needed. “A multi-visceral transplant includes the stomach, the large and small intestines, the pancreas, and liver,” Bontempo said. “You can’t just take the stomach and put it in with the other organs, you can end up with more problems along the way.” Harper was put on the transplant list January 2015. On March 9, 2015, they received the call to come to Miami immediately for a possible transplant. Nothing would be certain until the organs were deemed viable. “We might get down there, and the organs might not be what they thought, and then we would have to go home,” Bontempo said. “At 5:30 a.m. they brought us down to the OR, and that’s when I realized, ‘This is really happening.’” Bontempo was fully aware that for her daughter to have this opportunity, another family was in mourning. “I know the donor was a 9-month-old boy from Atlanta,” Bontempo said. “I have never met the parents. I may write to them,” she said, her voice catching. “I just don’t know what to say, or how to thank them.” Harper has made it past the first

year – a milestone for transplant recipients – but Bontempo knows anything can still happen. In the past week, she has taken Harper to the ER at Halifax twice. “Parents have to commit to the transplant,” Bontempo said. “You dedicate your life to it, especially the first two years. If she has a 100-degree temperature we have to go to the hospital. If we have to go to Miami, we might stay four days, or a month. We lived in Miami for four months after the transplant at the Ronald McDonald House, and I have an aunt who let us use her condo.” Bontempo said she has been grateful for community support, and for her boss, Glenn Iannillo, who has been understanding about her unpredictable work schedule. “He’s family,” said Janice Bontempo, Harper’s grandmother, who has worked for Iannillo for 14 years. “He did a fundraiser and said if it raised $2,500 he would shave his head and wear a blue Mohawk. We did, and he did.” High Tides at Snack Jacks also had a fundraiser that raised $2,500 to help with ongoing expenses, including the gas needed to drive back and forth to Miami. As Harper approaches her third birthday, the family recalled the pool party she had for her second birthday, a moment of normalcy that was short-lived. “On Sept. 6, our six-month mark from transplant, she had a fever and vomited,” Jessica Bontempo said. “We took her to Halifax ER, her belly wasn’t moving,

TO HELP The following is an excerpt written by Harper’s grandmother on the family’s gofundme page, which has a goal of raising $500,000: “[Harper] is the strongest little girl I know. ... Financially they are struggling with past and future debt. The community has helped Harper and her family so much, we are still asking for donations to help keep Harper’s fight going.” Visit gofundme.com/ harperbontempo to help.

she was transported to Miami in an ambulance and I followed.” Severe constipation, broken up by a scope in surgery, followed by a perforated intestine, and what was believed to be early rejection of the organs, put Harper back into the hospital for two months. “It showed us how quickly it could turn,” Bontempo said. Harper hopes to attend a regular preschool this fall. She has been going to a special preschool with medically trained staff in St. Augustine. The experience has Jessica Bontempo thinking about going back to school for a nursing degree. “Harper has made me a better mother, and a better person,” she said. “She has educated me in the medical field, and I want to pursue a career in nursing to help other children and their mothers.”

Keep on truckin’? Kohl’s no longer a ‘truck stop’

BRIEFS

Palm Coast Code Enforcement is notifying Kohl’s and other stores that they can’t allow overnight parking.

City may add alligator warning signs

The city of Palm Coast counted 14 trucks at one time in the Kohl’s parking lot, which is not allowed; the property is zoned for retail, not truck storage.

After an alligator killed a 2-yearold boy at Walt Disney World in Orlando, the theme park is putting up alligator warning signs — and the city of Palm Coast might, too. A concerned resident called City Councilwoman Heidi Shipley and suggested the signage, Shipley told council members at a council meeting June 21. “Obviously we can’t put signs in every swale and every body of water we have, but we did come up with something that sounds like it will work, just to to let people know who aren’t from Florida, people who are visiting, to let them know that there’s alligators here,” Shipley said. City Manager Jim Landon said city staff is designing informative warning signs that can be placed in areas where people might be drawn near the

the city, but she wishes there were some way to help the struggling truckers who are just trying to find a way to park closer to home and save some money. “Most people in the trucking industry live paycheck to paycheck,” said Rita Bielka, whose father also drove a rig. “I have a heart for truckers.”

water — near kayak and canoe launches, for instance — to warn visitors about alligators and other dangerous wildlife. “Most people who move here or are visiting here don’t have alligators in their backyard. We literally have people that have alligators in their backyard,” he said. “The rule of thumb in Florida, including Palm Coast: If there’s a body of water, of any size, it’s got a gator in it. … Recently, we saw the gator that decided to walk across the street and use the crosswalk. You see them on our golf courses. … The critter experts tell me that we probably have over 1,000 alligators within Palm Coast that live amongst us.” There are also other dangerous animals the signs could mention, he said, such as venomous water moccasins. Flagler County is also home to three other venomous snake species: diamondback rattlesnakes, pygmy rattlesnakes and coral snakes.

It was clear from the beginning that they were getting away with something. Truck drivers often have difficulty finding a place to park their rigs overnight in Palm Coast, and so John Bielka asked the management at Kohl’s if he could park in the expansive parking lot, rather than paying $100 or so per month to park on a designated lot across town. A sign in the parking lot warns drivers that their vehicles could be towed: The lot is zoned for retail, not for overnight truck storage. But, according to John’s wife, Rita Bielka, “Kohl’s allows people to do it, but didn’t condone it. … They weren’t going to tell us yes or no. … They were supportive of truck drivers. I felt that.” A manager at Kohl’s, who declined to give her name in a phone interview with the Observer, said that was essentially accurate, but emphasized that permission is not granted, and the sign “clearly states that it’s a towaway zone.” If one or two semi trucks are parked in front of a store overnight, no one might notice. But word apparently spread quickly, and as it got to be a dozen or even

14 semis at Kohl’s, the city’s Code Enforcement Department started to get complaints. The manager stated, “It’s gotten out of control.” As a result of the complaints, the city has notified Kohl’s that fines will follow if they continue to allow trucks to park overnight in their parking lots. Kohl’s was scheduled to go before the Code Board in July, but, the manager said the problem is “being addressed.” Kohl’s isn’t the only one. Walmart is scheduled to go before the Code Board in August. St. Joe Plaza is “being watched,” according to Palm Coast spokeswoman Cindi Lane. Meanwhile, The Home Depot, Staples and Lowe’s are in compliance. City Manager Jim Landon said the enforcement is nothing new; it come and goes in cycles. After the trucks are cleared out, everyone is in compliance for a while, and then a truck or two start parking overnight again, and it builds. “If it’s just someone driving through, and they need a night break, and they pull in, most people aren’t going to care,” Landon said. “But when you see 14 of them there, it’s a different story. … It’s a truck stop. It’s truck storage.” Bielka said she isn’t angry with

Every morning for the past 21 years, Melody Green has continued a family tradition: She puts on her U.S. Postal Service uniform and delivers the mail. “My grandfather worked for the Postal Service for 41 years,” Green said. “My mother also worked for the Post Office. So for me, it was a career to be proud of.” Green was ready to begin delivering mail in Palm Coast when she moved here in 1993. She took the test and waited. No call from the post office came. The reason? She didn’t have a driver’s license. Living in New York, she hadn’t needed one. All postal carriers are required to have at least two years’ driving experience. “I was very eager to start working, and knew it was the job that would be long term for me,” Green said. “I had no idea I needed a license. My grandfather delivered the mail in New York and didn’t have a driver’s license until halfway through his career.” Two years later, June 1995, she got the job and never looked back. “A typical day starts with retrieving all the mail for delivery on my route for that day, organizing all the letters, magazines and packages for delivery and then loading all of the items for delivery in the order in which they will be delivered,” she said. “Then I hit the street to actually deliver the mail.” Her route typically takes about four hours, and in the summer, four hours in a postal truck with no air conditioning can be tough. Carriers are constantly reminded about the importance of staying hydrated, and calling in for help if they don’t feel right. Green sees her job as more than putting envelopes in mailboxes, and packages at the door. She knows her customers in the

PALM COAST RANKS IN TOP 5 FOR MAIL CARRIERS ValuePenquin ranked Palm Coast as the No. 3 best “small” city (up to 100,000 population) for mail carriers. The ranking was based on the following: It’s 9% cheaper to live in Palm Coast than the average American city; the No. 1 location quotient (2.20) in the country; and mail carriers earn $52,750 (with benefits), on average, which ranked 65th in the study.

L-section in Matanzas Woods, and watches out for them — a practice that Postmaster James Davis said is not uncommon for postal carriers across the country. “We have stories across the country about carriers who have saved lives,” Davis said. “Something seemed off, and they looked in a window to see someone laying on the ground, or saved someone from a fire. They are out there every day. They know when something is not right.” One customer stood out in Green’s mind. “I had a customer notify me they were going out of town on vacation for a week,” she recalled. “Two days later I noticed their car was back in their driveway, so I knocked on the door to check if everything was alright. They came to the door smiling cheek to cheek. They came back early to adopt a beautiful baby boy. They had been waiting for years and years, and the chance came just after they left for vacation. The smiles on their faces were priceless.” Green said she has been stopped by police officers investigating a home burglary, and asked to report anything out of the ordinary, and by people looking for lost dogs. “If we notice mail piled up in a box, and it appears they are there, we will knock on the door to make sure everything is OK,” she said. “For me, it’s just being observant and looking around the neighborhood.” Recently Davis held interviews for more carriers. The post office is constantly hiring because many people don’t realize what is required to do the job successfully. “We send them out with a carrier for a few days, and sometimes lose 5 to 10 people because they realize it is not the easy job they thought it was,” Davis said. “Melody and a lot of carriers make it look easy, but that’s from years of organizational skills, wanting to do a good job, and caring about our customers. I am very strong on customer service.” Routes are varied. Green has a route of about 700 houses. Other areas are more condensed in high rises and business complexes, so some carriers may drive 60-70 miles a day, while others deliver the same amount driving 10. Green said there are things customers can do to ensure successful mail delivery: Use a complete address with apartment numbers and street, road, lane, etc.; use the ZIP code; complete a change of address card well before of any move; and keep dogs confined.

Workshops for landscape changes Palm Coast’s Planning, Land Development and Regulation Board will hold public workshops seeking public input on proposed changes to the Tree Protection and Landscape Code, according to a city of Palm Coast news release. The first workshop will be a 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 22, joint meeting of the planning board and the and Beautification and Environmental Advisory Committee, in the community wing of City Hall at 160 Lake Ave. “In studying the current requirements, and listening to stakeholder concerns, we believe it is time to re-evaluate,” Palm Coast Planning Manager Ray Tyner said in the release. “Before we make any changes, we want residents, local organizations and business owners to have the opportunity to provide feedback. That’s why we’re planning these public workshops, along with providing a link on the city’s website for comments.” The Code deals with tree preservation, tree protection,

Flagler Technical Institute held its graduation for 181 students June 15 at the Flagler Auditorium. This year’s guest speaker was Sheriff Jim Manfre. “It’s not so important the labels that others ascribe to us; what’s really important is what we ascribe to ourselves,” he said. “Because those

are the keys to success.” Manfre had the graduates reflect on one word that describes them. He encouraged the graduates to always think of that word and keep it with them when things are going well and when things are going poorly. “Because sometimes success is equally as difficult as failure, but you can build on each one of them,” Manfre said.

Sea Turtle healed and released The University of Florida Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bio-science Sea Turtle Hospital released a sea turtle named Cisco Kid at 10 a.m. on June 20 at the River to Sea Preserve beach, known as Marineland beach. This was the Sea Turtle Hospital at Whitney Lab’s first release of a turtle treated for fibropappilomatosis, which is a disease that causes internal and external tumors to grow on the sea turtle, inhibiting normal functioning. Cisco Kid, a juvenile green sea turtle, was found stranded on Hammock Beach, on Jan. 29, 2016. Cisco Kid was anemic when he arrived at the hospital, and also had several large fibropapilomatosis tumors. By April, Cisco Kid was healthy enough for surgery, and a carbon dioxide laser was used to remove the tumors, making Cisco Kid the first patient at Sea Turtle Hospital at Whitney Lab to receive the procedure.

or some student-athletes, their fathers don’t cheer from the sideline or wait to get home to go over what happens in a game. They’re involved in the game, either as a coach, or a photographer. These students from the area get to spend the most time with their fathers, because their dads work where they play. Here are some of the players’ memorable moments:

he McGuires are ready for any kind of emergency. If there is a fire in the home, the parents will know what to do because they’re both firefighters. If there is a burglar, the attack won’t last long: All three kids sleep near lacrosse sticks.

Tim and Heather McGuire introduced their kids Timothy Jr., 14, Hannah, 12, and 7-year-old Benjamin to the sport of lacrosse nearly two years ago, after hearing that Flagler County had teams for all three. “My husband is from the Northeast, so he knew about lacrosse,” Heather said, “but we had never really heard of it.” After they all participated in a practice, they all considered it worthy to give it a go. Timothy has since decided to take it up for high school in replace of his first love, baseball. Hannah, who scored a goal in this past weekend’s Blue

Skies Father’s Day Tournament, has also grown fond of the sport and plans to play throughout her school years. “It was fun and exciting to score that goal,” Hannah said. “I was pumped from it!” “We are all excited with the sport; it’s exciting to watch,” Heather said. “We feel it’s important to be involved with team sports. We want our kids to learn the value of working hard and accomplishing goals, as well as developing friendships with teammates.”

“That state finals loss knocked me down hard, but my dad was there the whole time for me to build off that. I was at my lowest ever, but he said to me, ‘You’re going to build from this; you’re going to become a better wrestler from this and come back even harder than you fell.’” MAINLAND: JASON COLUBIALE (SON OF BRIAN)

“When we (Ormond Pride) had to play the Argyle Spartans, whom we lost to the previous year. We were down in the fourth quarter but came back and won and went on to finish fourth nationally. “My dad was my head coach my entire life. It made me play better, because I was the coach’s son. He being there for every one of my games was a great feeling, even though after every game we always had his ‘ups and downs’ conversation, where he told me what I did well and bad.” MATANZAS: DEVIN MATHEWS (SON OF DON)

TAKING TIME TO FORGET ABOUT CANCER Last month, three Palm Coast boys who are battling cancer (Ryan Dudley, Cameron Fulling, and Brayden Norton-Henry) were invited to the field to for batting practice at a Tampa Bay Rays game. Keep fighting, boys! As Ryan’s mother wrote in an email, “They are all continuing treatment and observation, taking some moments like these to just be boys.”

“After I caught my first interception and scored my first touchdown, all my teammates celebrated with me, but the first person I saw on the sideline was my father. He gave me a big hug and said, ‘You finally got you one.’ My dad doesn’t ever really smile, but the old man was cheesing from ear to ear. I was very happy because I knew he was proud.” SEABREEZE: AMANDA DRISCOLL (DAUGHTER OF HUGH)

“My dad has been on the sidelines with me as a photographer since I made the cheer team my freshman year. We really close before I tried out for flag football. He taught me how to catch and snap a ball. “After offense would leave the field, he would always run up to me and say, ‘Look at this shot!’ He was always so enthusiastic when he got good pictures, and I was too.”

FPC wrestling reaches AllAmerica status

Matanzas quarterback was chosen to participate in the Blue-Gray National All-American Super Combine two-day event on June 11-12, at Daytona Memorial Stadium. His selection was determined from his previous showing in the regional combine and his 2015 season. Mackenzy Wagner participated as a receiver, and he hopes his performance proved enough to secure one of the four receiver spots for the nationally televised Blue-Gray All-American Bowl. Wagner won a medal for the fastest shuttle time (4.34), and he tied for most bench press reps with 14.

The Flagler Palm Coast wrestling team competed in and placed fifth at the AAU National Scholastic Duals this past weekend at the ESPN Wide World Sports Complex. The tournament featured 50 teams from across the country. The top eight teams were labeled All-America. Flagler Palm Coast went 11-3 throughout the tournament, 7-1 in its pool. FPC went 4-2 in the championship bracket. The Bulldogs defeated Social Circle, Georgia’s three-time reigning state champions, for fifth place. Michael DeAugustino went 14-0 at 120 pounds, not giving

Five feet, three inches of pure intensity Jenelle Codianne is just one test away from becoming the 22nd first-degree black belt at the Florida Jukido Academy. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

Jenelle Codianne loves to throw people. Well, not like random people on the street, but her classmates at the Florida Jukido Academy. And sometimes her husband. Codianne has been training in art of jukido jujitsu since 2011, and will earn her first-degree black belt after her final testing in July. AACS remembers ancestors in Juneteenth end-of-slavery celebration.

T

he African American Cultural Society celebrated Juneteenth and the emancipation from slavery on June 18 at the Cultural Center on U.S. 1. The AACS celebration not only reflects on the termination of slavery but also is a time to acknowledge the attendees’ ancestors. Guests were welcome to say the name of their loved ones they remembered. Each name was followed with, “ashay,” meaning, “Be with us.” This year’s ceremony included a song to the ancestors by Alexis Williams, a dance tribute by Angel Hopkins and a martial arts demonstration by the Moo Do Academy. “It’s giving the younger generation a continuity of what has gone before,” said Shirley Jacob, chairwoman of the Ways and Means Committee for AACS.

Cat ‘found’ in my high school locker

JACQUE ESTES COMMUNITY EDITOR

Here’s my story of how I got my first pet. What’s yours?

I

found Tigger in my high school locker — at least that’s what I told my parents. We had “secret pals” in school — someone who would leave you an unexpected card, candy, or, in my case, a kitten. Tigger was a Himalayan kitten. A friend’s cat had a litter, and I was offered one. Except I wasn’t allowed to have pets — which probably explains why I have never been without pets (plural) my entire adult life. There was no point in asking if I could have a cat — the answer would be, “No, end of discussion.” So I came up with an updated “the dog followed me home” ruse. In those days, we had afterschool activities, and late buses home — perfect! By the time I got home, there would be nothing we could do with

PETS OF TH E WEEK

the fluffy feline. As predicted, the first word out of my mother’s mouth was “no.” The cat could stay for the night, but I was taking it back to school the next day. Apparently Mom didn’t fall for the secret pal story, but I think I got points for creativity. The next morning I headed toward the door, kitten in my hand, frown on my face. Mother stopped me, and took the kitten — who lived with us Who knows, next time you might find a furry friend. for more than 17 years.

INDOOR CATS CAN HAVE AN ADVENTURE While kittens are easy to acclimate to inside life, an older cat may need to be convinced. Remember, a cat adopted from a shelter or rescue has already been transitioned to living inside. Here are a few ways to keep them happy in their new home. 1. Screened porches – Most Floridians have a screened porch. If not, there are now “catios,” screened-in areas just for your cat. You can buy or make these. Always use under supervision, because they will keep your cat in, but won’t keep other animals out.

Check for rips and holes before using. 2. Some cats will walk on a leash (Maine Coon cats seem particulary willing). It takes time, and walks should be done in areas where you will not encounter loose dogs. 3. Perches that attach to the window, or a kitty condo. I positioned my desk next to the window so Samantha can watch the lizards and birds. Very soothing for me as I write and she likes the company and the view. Whatever you choose needs to be steady. 4. Play time — We walk

our dogs, toss balls and Frisbees, but do you play with your cat? A feather tied to a string, and balls you can roll, and they pounce on, are excellent ways to keep your cat active. 5. Bring outdoors in with cat grass from the pet store. 6. Nail scratchers – The floor-style, corrugated box scratching posts are great. If you are a DIY type person — check online — you can make your own. 7. Litter boxes – Need to be the clean. Cats are fussy.
