My job there (Capitol Hill), and being a golf pro was kind of the same thing. You were always fixing problems, and communicating with people.” He started out working at smaller golf clubs in Maryland. Fifteen years later, Hammock Dunes called in November 2013.

PHOTO SERIES
This is the third installment in an occasional series in which the Flagler Beach Photography Club explores the world of first responders. This story is about the Jaws of Life, and the women firefighters of the Flagler County Fire Rescue and Emergency Medical Services.
The playing field has been leveled for women firefighters. Meet the four who work for Flagler County Fire Rescue. CAROL KINES CONTRIBUTING WRITER
There are no gender quotas requiring women to be hired. The four women Flagler County firefighter/paramedics are here because they want to be. Caryn Prather is a busy helicopter flight medic and lead field training officer. She coordinates paramedic training under medical director Dr. Kristin McCabe of Florida Hospital Flagler. Prather, Lt. Eileen Lee, Rebecca Palmer and paramedic/pump operator Maryanne Houston all rotate
DID YOU KNOW?
Ninety percent of the fire/emergency calls are for paramedic services. There have been women firefighters in Florida since the 1970s. Flagler County quarters for women firefighters include separate mini-bunkrooms with a twin bed, nightstand, light and locker.
shifts between the ambulance and fire engine to hone their skills in all areas. The first known female firefighter in the U.S., Molly Williams, took her place with the men on the drag-ropes during the New York blizzard of 1818 and helped pull the pumper to a fire through the deep snow. Modern day advances in equipment, technology and training have leveled the field for women. For example, the “Jaws of Life,” introduced 20 years ago, are capable of lifting a train locomotive, and are found on every fire engine in Flagler County with three additional units available for backup. If just athletic prowess was measured during training, males may have an edge. But the hiring process also includes an evaluation of an applicant’s ability to work efficiently, intelligently and cooperatively under pressure, testing their reactions under hypothetical situations and ability to adapt to station life.

During the spring physical fitness evaluation and firefighters combat challenge, all firefighters are evaluated on rigorous job skills: running up and down stairs while shouldering the water hose, wielding sledgehammers, climbing ladders and accurately knocking down cones with water streams. According to training Chief Lenny Ensalaco, “Nine out of 10 times, when they are in full gear, you can’t tell the difference between male and female. They all perform at a highly professional level. There’s no smoke and mirrors here.”

HOW MANY GUN OWNERS LIVE HERE?
Shawn Pruner says he understands why some people feel uneasy around guns, especially ones like the AR-15: because they don’t really know what it is. “It’s not an ‘assault rifle,’” said the Ormond Beach resident. “It’s an Armalite rifle, and it’s hardly any different than a wood stock rifle.” The AR-15 confusion comes from the gun’s military-looking design, he said, which lead some to believe it’s an automatic weapon — a gun that fires multiple bullets per trigger pull, until the trigger is released. But the AR-15 is a semiautomatic rifle, firing one bullet per trigger pull. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, firearms were the cause of more than 30,000 deaths in 2013. But Pruner said guns aren’t the problem — guns landing the hands of felons and mentally unstable people is the problem. “How often do you see on the news a guy who just got out of jail and killed someone,” he said. “No one is enforcing it, and it’s frustrating for gun owners because we get targeted by gun opponents.” Ormond Beach resident Jon
Middleton said there should be a clear difference in the process of getting handguns, shotguns and rifles, because each are handled differently and require different ammunition. “Just because I can drive a car doesn’t mean I can drive a bus or a semi-truck,” he said. “A different license is required, and that’s how it should be for guns. ... Just because you can own a gun doesn’t mean everyone should own a gun. In terms of the AR-15, there should be a longer waiting time, increased background checks and licensing required.” Originally from England, Middleton said the gun laws there are stricter, but would be nearly impossible to enforce in the U.S. Pruner said law-abiding citizens who own guns should still have the right to protect themselves, as long as they’re responsible. “You’re never going to be able to completely defend against terrorism and psychopaths,” he said. “But we all have a responsibility. When I go out and shoot animals with my friends, it’s a thing of respect between me and the animal. To take the life of a human being is something I can’t even fathom.”
Though Flagler County Tax Collector Suzanne Johnston has no plans to buy a gun, she still wanted to learn how to safely use one. And in case she ever has to shoot, she wanted to prepare realistically. So she wore her wedges to gun safety class. She said her daughter teased for her the wedges, but, she laughed, “God forbid if I ever have to shoot someone, that’s what I’d be wearing.” Johnston took the gun safety course June 11 to go through the new process of applying for a concealed weapon license at her office, at 1769 E. Moody Blvd. in Bunnell. Starting June 22, residents will be able to apply there for both their initial license or for renewal. Though the new service was unveiled just 10 days after the Orlando mass shooting, Johnston said the tragedy had no impact on the program. “(The program) provides a benefit to our residents,” she said. “Saves them time and saves them gas money. I want the good guys to have the guns, not the bad guys.” County Commissioner Nate McLaughlin was among the first to get his Florida Concealed Weapon License through Johnston’s office, as a part of a “friends and family” group able to get the license one day before the service is open to the public. According to figures provided by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Flagler County has 9,158 license holders. There are 1,581,742 license holders in Florida.

George Rego disarms student Roland Garner.
Class prepares for active shooter scenario COMMUNITY EDITOR
Adult participants of the Florida Jukido Academy are used to random masked men bursting into the middle of the class and simulating a mass shooting. The mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, made owner George Rego want to create more training and awareness. “I’m from Connecticut,” he said. “And as a father of small children, that hit me pretty hard. So we started doing it more within our facility. But after the shooting in Orlando, something so close to home, we had people reaching out to us. If we can help people be two or three percent safer by coming to a few hours of pretty simple self defense, let’s give it our best effort.” The academy is hosting its first Active Shooter Survival workshop July 15 to teach people the essentials of “Run, Hide, Fight.” The
workshop will be split into two components: self defense, and how to deal with an active shooter. “We want people to leave with a sense of empowerment, but no fantasies,” Rego said. “This is an extremely difficult situation with a ton of variables. We’re trying to teach them that there are controllables and uncontrollables. And you can’t worry so much about the uncontrollables. They will be what they will be.” What Rego hopes to instill is a sense of how to maximize controllables. He also wants people to make awareness of their surroundings a habitual part of life. “We want to think about it more as preparedness than paranoia,” he said. “When I walk out into a parking lot, I’m not paranoid that there’s a guy hiding in every bush, ready to jump me. Just like every time I get in my car to drive, I’m not paranoid I’m going to get into an accident. But I still put on my seat belt.”

Sheriff candidates express their vision, goals for Sheriff’s Office The forum June 22 was the first to include all candidates in the race. JONATHAN SIMMONS
QUESTION
What is the biggest need of the Sheriff’s Office right now, and what would you do to fill that need? Sheriff Jim Manfre: The biggest need is manpower. We have one of the lowest rates of officers per 1,000 in the area. The national average is about 2.1 deputies per 1,000. We’re at 1.24. ... Our service calls just the past three years have increased by 40,000 — almost 30%. At some time we have to start increasing out manpower, understanding economic issues that are confronted by the county. We have increased upper management by seven and
“If we are to build a better world, we must remember that the guiding principle is this — a policy of freedom for the individual is the only truly progressive policy.” FRIEDRICH HAYEK “Road to Serfdom,” 1944
The primary is Aug. 30, with two Democrats and six Republicans seeking the position of sheriff.
NEWS EDITOR
The county’s nine candidates for sheriff spoke of their qualifications and their vision for the agency before a crowd of about 350 people June 22 in a forum hosted by the Coastal Florida Police Benevolent Association at the Portuguese American Cultural Center of Palm Coast. Of the nine candidates, just two — incumbent Sheriff Jim Manfre and retired Flagler County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Larry Jones — are Democrats. Former NYPD officer and current local teacher Thomas Dougherty has no party affiliation. The remaining six candidates — Jacksonville County Sheriff’s Office Lt. John Lamb, Holly Hill Police Department Lt. Christopher Yates, former Flagler County sheriff Donald Fleming, U.S. Coast Guard Chief Warrant Officer Mark Whisenant, former New York City prison warden Gerard O’Gara and former Flagler County undersheriff Rick Staly — are Republicans. The forum June 22 was the first to place all of the nine candidates together. A forum held by the Flagler County Young Republican Club June 2 included only the six Republican candidates. Here’s what candidates said when asked what they believe the Sheriff’s Office needs.

increased deputies by seven, but there are six authorized positions I did not fill because of budgetary constraints. Larry Jones: We need a leader who’s a police officer who knows police officers, knows where they stand at, and we also need, like the sheriff said, is manpower. Because we have lost a lot of deputies recently in the Sheriff’s Office, so we need to do something about getting people here who’ll be able to stay here instead of wandering off to another agency. Get them here, and keep them here. Thomas Dougherty: You have to have a sheriff who’s a communicator. If you have a sheriff who can communicate with the public and with his police officers, you’re going have a very good police department. The manpower situation is what it is. I’m a big believer in education and communication. So if you have a sheriff who believes in those two — do everything you can to keep the public informed — and if you’re a good communicator, then everything falls into place. Donald Fleming: The biggest need we have is the retention of deputies that we have. Not only that, but the ability to go out and train these deputies to make them a better deputy that’s on the road. Also, we need to have the ability to lure people into this community, or deputies who’re female and male, in the jail and on the road. Also, we need to spice up the Sheriff’s Office by giving them the benefits and the care that they need to have. John Lamb: First: leadership, and experience. We need to establish a career development plan within
the Sheriff’s Office. Also, competitive: Flagler County’s the second lowest paid to Putnam County in the northeast area. We’re losing candidates, we’re losing applicants — and actually veteran applicants — to other agencies because of pay and opportunities. We need to encourage them, we need to have a strong recruitment. And more importantly, enthusiasm. If I show you an enthusiastic leader, I’ll show you an enthusiastic workforce. Gerard O’Gara: They need support from the top. The morale is not where it used to be. We need to give them what they need, when they need it. They need job security, a proper career path, good pay and benefits. That’s not asking too much. That’s the basics. If we give them those basics, they will serve us the best they can be. We’ll have a safer neighborhood, and it will increase the value of our property. They are already very, very trained. They’re very good officers. I’ve seen them, I work with them, I talk to them. They don’t need any more than what we can give them. Rick Staly: It’s leadership and staffing. ... I’m the only candidate who’s commanded 2,000 men and women, second in command in the fourth-largest sheriff’s office in the state of Florida. And I lead by example. Probably the only undersheriff who’s made arrests or booked them in myself. With staffing issues, 1.3 deputy sheriffs per 1,000 residents, well you fill that by using reserves, by using public service officer sand some additional deputies. Increase the benefits so you can attract and retain the employees.

Christopher Yates: The biggest issue is morale. I’ve worked with a lot of these guys, and they’re upset. They want a leader who is going to be there to support them. As far as pay, I worked in the city of Holly Hill. We had a $2.4 million budget for our police department. The city of Palm Coast has a $3 million budget for their police, or their Sheriff’s Office. The city of Holly Hill is less than four square miles. ... Second thing is, is our recruitment, we need to go out to all the schools and recruit the top-notch candidates from these classes, the academy classes. And select them in a hiring process that limits or weeds out the non-par people, and only hire the best officers that we can.

Mark Whisenant: It’s retaining the quality of people that we have, the men and women who serve Flagler County every night. Right now from our doorstep, what I’m planning to do is bring unity back to the Sheriff’s Office. We’re going to empower the deputies with equipment. They’re going to have a say. They’re all leaders. When they said they were going uphold the constitution and took an oath, they became a leader that day. Veterans will take number one priority status — we have a lot of good veterans — toward our recruitment, and we’re going to recruit quality veterans that served our country. They will take number one priority. And I will not take a raise while I’m in office. The raises will go towards the deputies. I will work with the county commissioners to fight for their raises, and they will be protected.

BURGLAR IGNORES CASH AND ELECTRONICS, STEALS MOUNTAIN DEW 5:52 p.m. First block of Sea Beacon Trail. Vehicle burglary: Someone rummaged through a local family’s unlocked cars overnight. At first, the woman who reported the incident to the Sheriff’s Office didn’t know what the thief could have been looking for: She’d left money and a GPS unit in the cars, but the thief hadn’t touched them. Then she realized there were only two things missing: two 16-ounce cans of Mountain Dew, which the thief had removed from a six-pack in the back seat. A deputy checked with neighbors, but none saw the Mountain Dew thief. THIEF STEALS KINDLE, REGISTERS IT ON AMAZON 10:15 p.m. First block of Utica Path. Larceny: A 35-year-old woman contacted Amazon about charges to her account, and mentioned to the Amazon representative on the phone that her Amazon Kindle tablet had been lost a while ago. She asked if there was any activity on it. There was, the representative said: Someone had de-registered the tablet from the woman’s account and then re-registered it to someone else’s account in early May. The woman told a deputy the tablet was worth about $479. A deputy listed the tablet’s serial number in a crime database as stolen.

The Flagler Beach Police Department is reminding residents and visitors that the city does not allow fireworks. Fireworks pose a safety and fire hazard, and it is illegal to possess, store, or explode them within city limits, according to a Flagler Beach Police Department news release. Fireworks can cause “serious personal injury to users and/ or observers should an explosive device detonate, misfire or unexpectedly explode,” Flagler Beach Police Captain Matt Doughney said in the news release. Flagler Beach uses the state’s definition of fireworks “Any combustible or explosive composition or substance or combination of substances or ... any article prepared for the purpose of producing a visible or audible effect by combustion, explosion, deflagration, or detonation.” That definition includes firecrackers, roman candles, skyrockets, ago bombs, blank cartridges, toy cannons that use explosives, balloons propelled by fire, and any fireworks containing explosives or flammable compounds, and any tablets or other devices that use explosives. Statistics from a 2014 study by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission showed that an average of 230 people go to the ER daily with fireworks-related injuries in the month around Independence Day, and that nine people have died due to eight fireworks-related incidents, according to the news release.

A circuit court judge has thrown out three of the 12 criminal charges levied against former Flagler County elections supervisor Kimberle Weeks. Weeks is charged with surreptitiously recording people’s conversations and distributing the recordings. At a March 24 hearing, Weeks’ attorney, Joerg Jaeger, asked Judge Margaret Hudson to throw out three charges for distributing a recording of a whispered conversation between Flagler County Attorney Al Hadeed and County Commissioner Charlie Ericksen. Weeks had played the recording at a 2014 public Canvassing Board meeting before distributing it, and by doing so, Jaeger told the judge, Weeks made the recording a public record and could not be prosecuted for distributing it thereafter. Assistant State Attorney Jason Lewis, at the same hearing, said, “To say that if someone plays something unlawfully at a public hearing, it converts it into a public record. ... just doesn’t make sense.” But Hudson, in a decision signed June 24, ruled in Weeks’ favor. “Playing the recording at this meeting made it part of the public record,” she wrote in the decision. “As such, the subsequent disclosures of what occurred at this meeting was subject to being heard or viewed by the public and, therefore, cannot be the basis for criminal prosecution.” Weeks is scheduled for a pretrial hearing at 2:30 p.m. July 22.
Palm Coast resident Richard Resnicoff was killed falling off the rear of his wife’s car near their Jasmine Drive home in Grand Haven on Jan. 12, 2013. Deputies at first weren’t sure how he’d ended up on top of the car at all. Witnesses gave conflicting statements. But on June 21, 2016, deputies arrested Resnicoff’s wife, Lucille Horton, 69, and charged her with vehicular homicide. Resnicoff’s son Zachery Resnicoff had filed a wrongful death suit against Horton in January 2015, seeking more than $15,000 and alleging wrongful death as a result of negligence and battery. A counterclaim filed by Horton’s legal team in July 2015, also seeking in excess of $15,000, denied that Horton had been negligent or had battered Richard Resnicoff. In fact, the counterclaim said, Resnicoff had been “physically, verbally, and emotionally abusive” to Horton throughout their marriage, and on the day of Resnicoff’s death, had “intentionally caused physical harm to (Horton) on multiple occasions.” Resnicoff fell from Horton’s car after jumping onto it as she tried to flee him, according to the counterclaim. The retired couple had been married for several years at the time of Resnicoff’s death, and neighbors recalled that they had played croquet and attended a monthly social in Grand Haven. The civil case is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. Aug. 30 hearing. Horton is scheduled for a felony arraignment in the criminal case at 8:30 a.m. July 25.

‘It’s not victimless’: City officials wary of pot policy JONATHAN SIMMONS NEWS EDITOR
Councilman Bill McGuire agreed. “It’s either legal or it’s not,” he said. “If it’s not legal and you do it, you’re a criminal. Period.” Law enforcement officers already have discretion, he said. “Who hasn’t tried to talk a traffic cop out of writing you a ticket? And sometimes you do,” he said. “But as far as marijuana and underage drinking goes, unless you’re going change the law, then enforce the law.” The ordinance the county is considering would also give officers the option to write citations rather than levy criminal charges for underage drinking between the ages of 18 and 21. Councilwoman Heidi Shipley didn’t offer an opinion at the June 28 workshop, but has spoken positively about potential benefits of a civil citation program in the past. Councilman Jason DeLorenzo said he prefers that any changes to marijuana policy be made countywide — and Bunnell’s police chief does not support the citation program, while Flagler Beach officials haven’t given a definitive answer. “Having the countywide program, I think, is the key,” he said. He said he was comfortable with the proposed fine of $250 for the citation. Mayor Jon Netts said he thought the issue of marijuana policy would be best handled though legislation at the state level but, he said, “If it’s going to be done in Flagler County, it ought to be done countywide.”
BRIEFS County may seek attorneys’ fees in dismissed Ethics Commission case
Of the 26 complaints, 19 have been dismissed or investigated with no finding of fault, four are pending, and three resulted in a settlement (against Commissioner Barbara Revels) or a $250 fine (against County Commissioners Frank Meeker and Nate McLaughlin, over improper wording on a political ad disclaimer). Targets of the complaints have included County Administrator Craig Coffey and County Attorney Al Hadeed, plus the five county commissioners: Revels, Meeker, McLaughlin, Charles Ericksen and George Hanns.
The county attorney’s office uses a spreadsheet to keep track of them all: Complaints and suits filed against county officials by a small group of critics of the county government number 26, many of them repeating the same allegations. They’ve overwhelmingly been dismissed, but fighting them costs money. And at an upcoming meeting, county commissioners may decide whether to seek reimbursement for attorneys’ fees for one of them, an Ethics Commission complaint filed by Mark Richter against County Administrator Craig Coffey. County Attorney Al Hadeed — himself a target of four of the complaints, all of them dismissed — may present that option to the Board of County Commissioners at a meeting July 6. He’s done so before: The county is seeking attorneys’ fees in seven other cases, including two filed under the name of Mark Richter’s son, Mark Richter Jr. “The fee petitions that we’re filing are in accordance with the state statutes, and in particular the rules of the Ethics Commission,” Hadeed said. “Those rules are designed to compensate taxpayers for the cost of defending against complaints that have been filed despite the knowledge that the allegations in the complaint are false.”
Property Appraiser Jay Gardner and Tax Collector Suzanne Johnston re-elected Two incumbent candidates for county offices were re-elected without opposition June 24 as the qualifying period for all local races ended. Flagler County Tax Collector Suzanne Johnston and Property Appraiser Jay Gardner faced no challengers as qualifying ended at noon. No Democrats have registered for the Supervisor of Elections race, so the race between incumbent Kaiti Lenhart and challengers Abra Seay and Kimble Medley, all Republicans, will be a universal primary open to registered voters of any or no party affiliation. Whoever wins that primary wins the race. This year’s supervisor of elec-
tions race will be first universal primary contest in Flagler County since the County Commission District 4 race in 2010 that ended with the election of Commissioner Nate McLaughlin, Elections Supervisor Kaiti Lenhart said. Former Republican Executive Committee Chairman Dave Sullivan qualified this week to challenge the County Commission District 3 seat held by Barbara Revels. One candidate, Gerald Eggert, withdrew from the the race for the County Commission District seat held by incumbent Charlie Ericksen. In the city of Palm Coast, Travis Kaufman withdrew from the race for mayor. Dennis McDonald, who has sued the city of Palm Coast twice and has run unsuccessfully for County Commission in the past, entered the race for Palm Coast mayor. There will be 116 different ballot styles in Flagler County — a record high number, Lenhart said. Aug. 1 is the last day for new voter registrations and party affiliation changes before the primary. City of Palm Coast races and the Supervisor of Elections Office race will be open to all voters, as will a Florida constitutional amendment on tax consideration for solar and renewable energy sources. To view a list of all the local candidates, see flaglerelections. com/Election-Info/Local-Candidates-Committees.

Some local officials, including Sheriff Jim Manfre, think possession of small amounts of marijuana and marijuana paraphernalia should be handled with a fine, not criminal charges, for first-timers. Two city officials disagree. “I can’t believe we would sit in a room with law enforcement and use the term ‘victimless crime’ when it comes to marijuana,” Councilman Steven Nobile said during a City Council workshop June 28. “There are victims laying in the fields all from here down to South America and across. It’s not victimless. Whether you have 20 grams or whether you have 20 pounds, you’re supporting that industry. ... You may not have directly stabbed, shot or robbed someone, but someone getting that 20 grams to you did.” And, Nobile said, the matter of whether to treat a particular case of possession as a crime or a citation — which would be left to the discretion of individual law enforcement officers under the proposed county ordinance — isn’t a matter for individual cops. Nobile’s said his statements on the proposed citation program don’t have anything to do with the question of whether or not to legalize marijuana — a different issue. “I don’t care,” he said. “If that’s what the people want, make it legal, this goes away, we don’t have to deal with this stuff.”

City seeks money for Palm Harbor golf Officials are considering alternative contract structures to save money. Specializing in: Fibromyalgia • Allergies • Ears, Nose & Throat
JONATHAN SIMMONS NEWS EDITOR
The Palm Harbor Golf Club and tennis center lose money every year, with the city covering the deficit for private management company Kemper Sports while also paying Kemper a management fee. City officials have had enough of that arrangement. “It doesn’t make a whole lot of business sense to keep doing the same thing when we’re not happy with the results,” City Manager Jim Landon said at a City Council workshop June 28. Palm Coast will spend about $95,000 on upgrades at the Indian Trails Sports Complex. The city plans to replace sod and all eight dugouts, and install a drain system, a June 28 City Council workshop presentation showed. Not all were pleased with spending so much. If it costs $95,000 this year, City Councilman Bill McGuire asked, “How much next year? These kids play ball in conditions that are 100 times better than I played on when I was a kid.” “We do major improvements out at this facility, and we continue to hear more requests,” City Manager Jim Landon replied. The city has already added a batting cage, soft toss area and four T-ball fields to the complex this year. The Palm Coast Little League gave $20,000 in grant money for that work.

per, which would not agree to the city’s terms for a long-term contract when it comes to liability. Officials are now looking at four options, which city Administrative Services and Economic Development Director Beau Falgout presented to City Council at the workshop: leasing the properties out to a private company, managing the properties itself, keeping the properties under third-party management but adding guidelines like withholding monthly management pay if the properties don’t break even, or creating a hybrid solution in which the city would manage some of the operation while contracting out other functions such as the restaurant and golf clinics to specialist vendors. “There’s not a big market of potential business that you’re going to tap into,” City Councilman Bill McGuire said. “If you can’t build your revenue, you’re going have to cut your costs.” Landon said that if the city leased the course out, city officials wouldn’t have to deal with resident complaints: They could refer complainers to the private company operating the course.“If we go this route, I’m done — go call the business,” Landon said. He said he didn’t think any private company could make enough money on the course to make a lease worthwhile. And if the city takes over the course, it will lose money, he said. City Council didn’t make a decision, but asked staff for more detailed guidelines for a potential contract with a management company, and for a potential city/ private hybrid option.

THE 4-H COMPETITION Sage and Trinity Calugar will be competing in the state horse competition Saturday, July, in Tampa. They were the only locals to qualify for the event. “The state show is going to be tough, and we’re training hard for it,” Sage said. “But, as long as we go out there and try our hardest, even if we lose, Slick and I will always be winners.” “Keelee and I have been training a lot for the show,” Trinity added. “It will be a fun experience, even if we don’t win any ribbons. But of course, I always hope we win.”

T
hese four-legged farm animals, Slick and Keelee, have replaced boys as heartthrobs for teenage sisters Sage and Trinity Calugar, whom they will accompany at the state 4-H competition next month. Their affection for horses began in 2013, when Trinity relentlessly begged her parents to go on a trail ride at the Flagler County Agricultural Museum. After hearing how the museum was run by volunteers, Trinity and Sage convinced their mother, Laura, that it would be a great character-building exercise for them to volunteer and help take care of them. That developed into a riding lesson, then biweekly lessons, and eventually Laura getting a home that was made ready for horses, where they could house theirs and their friends’ horses. “We spend a fortune on horses, but it’s totally worth it,” Laura said. “I’d rather our girls be obsessed with horses than boys.” Preparing for a competition
“We spend a fortune, but it’s totally worth it. I’d rather our girls be obsessed with horses than boys.” LAURA CALUGAR, Sage and Trinity’s mother
eventcan take hours. The girls have to brush the horses’ hair — sometimes braid it — bathe them, saddle them and other preparations. “People think horseback riding isn’t a sport; it’s a sport just to get the horses ready,” Laura said. Trinity, the younger of the two, says she has found her niche in this unlikely sport, with a more unlikely partner. “I had tried other sports before horses, like basketball and gymnastics,” she said. “Those sports were OK, but they have nothing on horses. My teammate now is a 1,000-pound animal who is totally dependent on me. I have to think about her needs every day. I spend many hours training, grooming and caring for her. In return, she takes care of me in the arena during competitions and when I need a good friend to hang around.” As mentioned by Trinity, the daily responsibility of caring for their animals has educated Sage and Trinity so much with life and living selflessly that Sage compares owning a horse to “having a toddler. “No matter how late or early it is,” she says, “I have to feed and care for him.” But, when everything is set in order, and the girls are ready to ride, they saddle up and venture onto a magical ride. “When I’m riding Slick, it feels like I’m flying,” Sage said. “As our 4-H motto says, ‘Horses lend us the wings we lack.’ Riding is more than just saddling up; it’s getting on the back of a 1,000-pound animal who has the power to kill but remains so gentle. Only God could create such an animal.”
t has never been done before.” “Everyone else has failed to pull it off.” “It’s impossible.” Ever heard these words before in your quest do the un-doable? I’m sure Palm Coast’s 10U AllStars have been told a couple of these things, until they became the first in the program’s history to win the District 19 Championship on Monday, June 27, at Indian Trails Sports Complex. “These kids all bought in from day one with the goal of becoming the first 10U team to win our district,” coach Jason Roberts said. “The last two games here in town felt like a minor league game. Everybody came out to give these boys support, and I couldn’t be more proud of this team and our community.” When it comes to being a trailblazer, think of two people who stand before a fork in the road. The person on the right says, “I’ll go along with the others. It has been proven that this goal can’t be achieved. And, when I fail to accomplish it, no one will look at me in disappointment; instead, they will compliment me for simply trying.” But the one on the left will think, “I am none of those who tried before me. There are different circumstances, different people involved, so this task isn’t an impossibility. It just hasn’t been attempted by the right person, or people.” Then, that person rises to the occasion and becomes the first ever to pull off what seemed to be impossible, like LeBron James and his Cavs came back from a 3-1 NBA Finals deficit. When it comes to the PCLL All-Stars, they had help achieving their feat. As mentioned, the community packed the bleachers and surrounded the ball park in support. And, for the past years, they have seen team after team become the first to win district titles, and they have last year’s 12U team as a standard to look up to. They earned a berth to the Little League State Tournament, after winning PCLL’s first sectional championship. It’s their turn to go on a historic run.

Pirates take to air
“We should be better if we can mature up front. We’ve been playing with sophomores and juniors forever; now I have seniors.” ROBERT RIPLEY, Matanzas head football coach
The Pirates seemed to have their future playmakers. JEFF DAWSEY SPORTS EDITOR
Two years ago, the Matanzas Pirates were a one-dimensional football team. Everyone on both sides of the stands knew Daniel Dillard was getting the ball. Now, they’re gearing up for a “guess who?” offense. With little run support in the 7v7 set up, teams are forced to air it out. That’s just what Matanzas did. Mackenzy Wagner played near perfect, throwing 11 touchdowns while only tossing one interception throughout the tournament. Phillip Moultrie led the Pirates with five touchdown receptions; Devin Mathews had three. Matanzas is heading into the upcoming season with a ton of offensive talent, maybe the most coach Robert Ripley has ever had. With guys like Moultrie, Mathews, Cory Stewart, Jacob
Miley, Will Cowles and Trent Stewart, the Pirates will look to open their offense even more than last year with Andre Bodison. “I think all of them make us more versatile,” Ripley said. “We should be better if we can mature up front. We’ve been playing with sophomores and juniors forever; now I have seniors.”

GAME RECAPS:
In a recent 7v7 tournament, which they hosted, the Pirates went 3-2 on the day, falling by only a point in both losses (21-20 to Ponte Vedra and 14-13 to St. Augustine. They were, however, able to beat Ponte Vedra in their first match 20-19, and they picked up wins against Union County (28-14) and Orange Park (21-7).

our-month-old D.J. Mikens opens his mouth in anticipation of the next spoonful of food headed his way. Feeding him is his 5-year-old brother, Kaeden Mickens. Kaeden had already had his first openheart surgery by the time he was D.J.’s age, and was getting ready for his second. “He has hypoplastic left heart syndrome,” Kaitlyn Smith, his mother, explains. “The left side of his heart didn’t develop, so he has two chambers instead of four, and a small aortic valve.” Kaeden’s brother, and 15-month-old sister, Elaina, were both checked for the birth defect, and neither have it. It’s only when Kaeden shows you his “sexy man zipper,” the scar left from three surgeries (the third was December 2014), that you realize he has any medical problem at all, and that’s the way Smith wants it to be. “The thing right now is, he has no limits, and that’s not normal,” Smith said. “He could go a month and be perfectly fine, and then we could go to the doctor and be told he has to be indoors the next two months.” Smith would like to send him to camp this summer while he is at his physical best. “He has always been in and out of the hospital, and we have always gotten by, but we’ve never been able to give him something really fun,” Smith said. “Maybe I can go to fire camp,” Kaeden suggests. Like many 5-year-olds, firemen and fire trucks fascinate him. He watches fire safety videos and

A fire at a house on his street gave him a chance to watch the firefighters in action, and he got some stickers and a plastic fire chief hat — a treasured possession. “He has even attached an empty two-liter plastic bottle to his back for an oxygen tank,” Smith laughed. Knowing that Kaeden could go into heart failure at any time, or a routine visit to the cardiologist could end up with an admission to Wolfson’s Children’s Hospital in Jacksonville, Smith grabs every normal moment she can for her son. “I want to keep his life as normal as possible. I can’t keep him indoors,” she said. “I don’t want

him to say, ‘Oh no, I can’t do that because of my heart,’ if he can do something. He knows his limits.” The first three open heart surgeries, at six days, six months, and the last December 2014, were scheduled to coincide with his growth. Surgeries will continue as needed, using his own organs for as long as possible. “He’s not on the transplant list yet, because he is healthy and strong,” Smith said. “Transplants get rejected and can have problems, so they want to work on his heart until they can’t anymore.” Kaeden will be in kindergarten at Belle Terre Elementary this year, hopefully with tales of camp to share with classmates. Smith said she is working with the Make a Wish Foundation and Dreams Come True. The type of camp doesn’t seem to matter to Kaeden. He likes sports and arts and crafts. Sport camps would require extra protective equipment for his chest. Because his condition can change quickly, he would require a physical before heading off to camp. Smith is part of a Facebook advocate group. She mentors a 20-year-old mom in Georgia who’s baby just had his first surgery, and she gets mentored by a 21-year-old who has had the surgeries herself. “Everybody’s case is different, of course,” Smith said. “But I like to know, if things are good — this is how it’s going to be; if things are bad — this is what you can plan for.”

Eleven-year-old softball player Esperanza “Essie” Bass’ world changed Feb. 28, after she was diagnosed with leukemia. On Feb. 24, a normal “knee pop” wouldn’t pop for Essie. As she complained to her mother, Shannon Gutierrez, about it, they’d thought nothing of it. After two days, with Essie still complaining of pain, Gutierrez took her daughter to Florida Hospital Flagler’s emergency room for an X-ray. With no answers, the emergency room doctor suggested a visit to her pediatrician, suggesting Bass may have a problem with her meniscus. Following her gut feeling, Gutierrez took her daughter to Wolfson Children’s Hospital in Jacksonville. After a second round of blood work, answers were finally provided. “Your daughter is being admitted for symptoms of cancer,” the doctor told them. Gutierrez was in shock. “I never thought anything cancer,” she recalled. The next morning, Essie was told she has chronic myeloid leukemia, a rare blood-cell cancer that begins in the bone barrow, usually found in adults ages 35-64. Essie’s blood count was 357,000; someone without CML’s blood count would be 10,000. Gutierrez believes God put swelling on Essie’s knee so she

If you really support the troops, think twice before you set off those fireworks.
I
have always encouraged my readers to refrain from exploding loud fireworks on the Fourth of July, because of the adverse effect it has on pets, especially dogs. But the noise and vibrations can also be upsetting to our combat veterans, many suffering from PTSD. Everyone flies flags and praises our veterans, but then, on Independence Day, we seem to forget what these men and women have been through. Please, if you are sincere about your support of the troops, reconsider those fireworks in the backyard. There are two free and fabulous Fourth of July firework displays in the county: one at the Flagler Beach Pier Monday,
July 4, and the other in Palm Coast Town Center, Sunday, July 3. Getting away from the sound of fireworks isn’t easy, especially if you live near one of the public display sites. Before dusk, take your pups out, securely on a leash. I don’t care how well-behaved your pets are normally, please don’t take the chance — use a leash. One exploded firework can send the best dog running. Once inside, set them up in their crate, or a quiet room in the house, soothing music on low (not the time for John Philip Sousa), and a favorite blanket or toy. If you are not going out, stay in the room with them. The company will be appreciated. Leave lights on. The flash from the fireworks will be less noticeable in a room that is lit. Thundershirts may also help with some of the fear. These don’t work on all dogs. Do not take your dog to public displays. It isn’t good on their ears or their nerves. If you are having a family barbecue, make sure your dog is safe and secure inside. Many dogs will dig out, or jump a fence, to “get away” from unfamiliar noises. Should your dog get out, please check with local humane societies, Flagler and Halifax, and post on local

animal rescue Facebook sites. As always, make sure your pets have up-to-date identification on them. For our veterans, I hope I have dissuaded some of your neighbors from exploding fireworks. There are noise reduction headphones, which I have been told work fairly well, and I know some of you will go camping to get away from the celebrations. Our thoughts are with you this weekend, and thank you.

Nicholas and his brother, Matthew, found the name Asher, meaning, “abundance of happiness,” and the others agreed to use it. “We have all worked so hard to move forward, and all of the children are passionate about their name change, feeling like it is one of the strongest links to the past,” Ellen Sperber wrote in an email. “They have been courageous, strong, united and faith-filled through this healing process,” she wrote, referring to her children. As a family, they also plan to continue to help others. Kathryn specifically chose her degree because of the past: She is studying psychology with a focus on family dynamics and trauma. Ellen, who is a teacher at Old Kings Elementary School, earned her doctorate degree on June 24 from the University of Central Florida. Her dissertation focused on training teachers about trauma and its effects on student learning. “Getting past this has been a really hard process, and this is the last thing toward our freedom,” Kathryn said. She said she is looking forward to signing her new name, Kathryn Asher. “It’s just going to be so free,” she said.
Steve DeGarmo changes the back tire on his 20-year old bike after picking up a nail in the road. DeGarmo is always picking up nails, but usually not with his bike tire. DeGarmo is known for stopping to pick up road debris. “This whole thing started a year ago,” DeGarmo said. “I would see stuff on the bike path, and in the street, so I thought ‘I’ll pick up a few things.’” His “few things” has steadily grown. Recently when he and his wife, Renee, were on their way to Starbucks he saw something on the eastbound lane of Palm Coast Parkway. After parking at the Starbucks and waiting for traffic to pass, he stepped out to pick it up – an 8-inch lock pin from a trailer hitch. “If I could prevent someone from getting hurt, someone from getting a flat tire, why not pick it up?” he said. “It’s kinda like a random act of kindness.”

To help pay for the process, the family is crowdfunding.
A family of six is seeking closure through a name change eight years after the parents divorced and allegations of abuse were brought forward. The Sperber family — Mom, three daughters and two sons — hope to be the Asher family by the end of the year. To help pay for the process — a name change costs $400 per person — the Sperbers posted a GoFundMe page on social media. Having all the money at once will allow them to change their names as a family unit. Kathryn Sperber, the second oldest daughter at 26 years old, called the relationship with her father “traumatic” — so much so that, she said, after the divorce, two of the children have seen therapists for post-traumatic stress disorder. In 2009, Kathryn accused her father, George Sperber, of sexually abusing her since 1994. However, the State Attorney’s Office decided in 2010 that it would not pursue criminal charges. Attempts to reach George Sperber were unsuccessful before press time. Kathryn said a name change has been a topic of discussion for the past eight years, but it would only be done once Ellen (the mother) and all five children agreed, especially since the youngest, Nicholas, is only now 16 years old.
