The Year in Review

from Content Anchor

Smita Rai

Over the past few years, we here at PT have seen the pro audio and lighting industry grow by leaps and bounds. 2017 was redeeming for big live acts – Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran, UB 40, Dream Theatre and Chainsmokers, to name a few. While we get cracking on our next issue and look back at the year gone by in review, I find the shine missing from the stage. Other than a “has been” Bryan Adams concert, there were EDM stars Martix Garrix, Marshmellow and Incubs, Godfather of the British Blues John Mayall and few others who performed as part of fests such as Sunburn, Supersonic, Mahindra Blues Festival etc. and this list more or less sums it up. It was in November 2017 when English singer-songwriter James Blunt excitedly announced his India tour in 2018 but just four months down the line, he put up another post announcing the cancellation of his show in Bangalore. His post read - “Our booking agent has advised that due to the failure of the promoter to enact contract terms, it is no longer possible for this show to take place.” So much for all the chest thumping and reports suggesting a growing number of international acts coming down to India and promoters promising to bring down the biggest names in the International music scene. Plain speak is that barring Arijit Singh and AR Rahman, and intermittently DJs like Nucleya or a Chetas who have “Bollywoodised” their music to suit local tastes, India does not have any other local talent to engage and entertain a mass audience. India has not succeeded in producing a homegrown Justin Bieber or an Ed Sheeran, probably because Bollywood Rules, and Sharuk Khan is still the face of other people’s composition and voice. And number of international acts are just not as many as they should ideally be. We can at best surmise is at as “painfully getting better”. Our Indian show business is still reliant on foreign acts, which unfortunately are already burdened with withholding taxes, red tapism and other challenges. Organising Big Stage Extravaganza (pg. 26) in our last issue of the year, explores opportunities and obstacles in organizing big ticket, big stage shows. Though the government has done a small bit by bringing down GST prices, there is yet much that needs to done, as the growth of this industry has a direct impact on other industries such as tourism and hospitality. Today, people across the global are not averse to travelling to other cities or countries to watch their favorites perform and India is no exception to the rule. Music Tourism is the new mantra. For the industry to thrive it is imperative that the State Governments pay heed to the woes of the event organisers and makes life simpler for all stakeholders by establishing a single window clearance for all permits. Maharashtra should atleast take a forward step in this direction like Delhi. This issue also features Visual artistes Kaycee, Jash Reen and Joshu Dmello - the Rock Stars behind the Rock Stars, conceptualising reams of graphics (pg. 52 & pg. 56). Thanks to guidance the team received from Mr. Anil Chopra and the efforts of our conscientious Content Manager, Ankita Bhadrawale, in 2018 PT reinforced its anchoring position as an independent and neutral media focusing only on the best stories and innovation. Giving the market some focus in 2018 were six focus subjects - FOH, Studio, Live, Install, Lighting and Big Stage DJ. Last year also featured global top honchos Pio Nahum – Claypaky, Joe Pham – QSC and Aidan Williams – Audinate in 11 Questions. 2018 started with a bang as we reviewed 50 top high-end frontier tech equipment of 2017, while also putting the spotlight on 15 top FOH engineers who provided insight to their wish list of features on the new age FOH console. I was honoured to meet studio design guru and erstwhile winner of the IRAA award for Global Innovation in Studio Design – Mr. Andy Munro. The Studio special issue produced Mr. Munro’s thoughts on acoustics, music and recording. The Live issue incidentally is my favourite each year. It also happens to be the PALM show issue. For me, the final outcome of all the effort (and stress), which goes into planning and producing the stories while also putting together the PALM highlight features, is a heartwarming experience. The Art of touring in this issue had insights from AR Rahman’s Encore tour on all the implications of managing a tour. The icing on the cake was the Maestro himself receiving the magazine and appreciating the story at the sidelines of the PALM expo 2018. The Install special had an eclectic mix of auditoria and entertainment venue install stories. PALM 2018 was a benchmark, and this post-show review issue featured the PALM Story and the action from across eight halls at the Nesco trade fair grounds. Lighting being the next frontier for manufacturing in India, a dedicated issue focusing on lighting stories is of course a given. The who’s who of this industry – Harold Fernandes, Atul Sonpal, Naveen Deshpande, Davinder Wadhwa, Rasesh Parekh – all contributed with stories and insights for this special issue. A big shout-out, to our distinguished columnists Warren D’souza, Viraf Pocha and Reji Ravindran for supporting the industry media and contributing with immense knowledge on Mr. A.R. Rahman browsing through PT and appreciating its contribution to the industry trends and technologies. Year 2019 promises to be a year of major activity in the PALM Expo stable. PALM has finally bitten the bullet, and launched the AV-ISE expo in Hall 3 of Nesco, concurrent with the PALM expo from 31 May – 1 June. It’s a matter of pride that we have also launched the AV-ISE magazine which will provide dope of all the new tech and business dynamics of the Audiovisual industry. I’m excited that I’m going to be editing both the magazines now. As 2019 is now in full swing, I hear from a few different sources that we are in for an exciting year of major product launches and we encourage all of you to write in to us with all the Juice and Jazz. Cheers until then!

ALLEN & HEATH GOES DEEP WITH NEW PLUG-INS FOR SQ SERIES Allen & Heath has announced that a range of DEEP processing plug-ins is now available as optional add-ons for its SQ Series. According to the company, this new options allow SQ users to choose from a suite of plugins ported directly from Allen & Heath’s flagship dLive mixing system, including premium compressors inspired by sought-after hardware units and a collection of powerful GEQs. Due to its SQ’s 96kHz XCVI core, based on latest generation FPGA technology, a preamp and compressor plug-in can be used on each of the 48 input channels, while a GEQ and compressor can be applied to

each of the 16 mixes. Unlike thirdparty plug-in solutions which require additional hardware and add latency and complexity, DEEP plug-ins are built in to the console architecture and add no additional latency to the system, ensuring phase coherency across channels and mixes. Nic Beretta, Allen & Heath’s Head of Product, said: “One of the key reasons for dLive’s success has always been the quality of its onboard processing and now we’re bringing that direct to SQ. These new additions confirm SQ as the most powerful console in its class, and certainly one of the most customizable. As an SQ user, you can pick the combination of plug-ins

company like Mega Sound who is booked throughout the year, the SD5 will surely make their 2019 calendar much busier.” Diversity is very much obvious across the country when it comes to live music audience. PROTOS, NEW LOAD MONITORING SYSTEM COMPANY This year of July saw the birth of a new company specializing in load and force monitoring systems for the entertainment industry. The Dutch based company called PROTOS, meaning ‘first’ or freely interpreted ‘the best’ in ancient Greek is off to a powerful start due to their stateof-the-art equipment, service and competitive pricing policy. “The entertainment industry is constantly and quickly developing to keep up with the latest developments. While the audience’s hunger for state-of-the-art shows keeps growing. Concerts, plays and shows are constantly evolving, and it seems like each iteration has to be more spectacular than the last.” says Jasper van der Sluis, director and co-owner of PROTOS, along with his

November - December 2017

brother Cor van der Sluis. “Through our work with Prolyte and Doughty Asia Pacific and Prolyte Doughty Japan we have noticed a strongly growing demand for force measuring equipment on a global scale. A demand for a system that is easy to set up, understand and above all, a system that ensures a safe working environment.” PROTOS was

founded to cater to these needs. Because of the unique features of the force monitoring systems, in conjunction with the global service they offer, the newly established company has already acquired partners in various countries around the world such as Holland, China, Canada, Australia, India and counting. Being able to measure the load lifting is essential to be able to provide

16

safe working conditions. To protect people and expensive equipment, not only for temporary structures but also arenas and other venues that host shows on a regular basis. For this reason, PROTOS offers both wireless and wired force measuring solutions. The brothers went on to explain that the system is incredibly easy to set up and maintain and that further product development is a major focus for the company. “We are still expanding the load measuring system by adding functionality based on feedback from the industry. We’re currently working on a cloud service that, among other things, will make it possible to send (overload) messages remotely to any device connected to the cloud, mobile or otherwise.” added Cor van der Sluis.

WAVES ANNOUNCES EMOTION LV1 LIVE MIXER V10 UPDATES AND NEW FEATURES Waves Audio has announced eMotion LV1 Live Mixer V10 updates and new features. This revolutionary digital mixing console for frontof-house, monitor and broadcast engineers has now been updated to V10 with new exciting features, including I/O sharing with separate

I/O sharing, allowing FOH and monitor engineers to share stageboxes between two eMotion LV1 mixers. According to Waves Audio, “To complement this feature, V10 also introduces both shared and separate gain control modes, enabling engineers to set their

gain control for each engineer and shared pre-amp control with automatic individual gain compensation. The eMotion LV1 V10 adds performance and stability improvements, and it now supports

nominal input levels safely and conveniently, without affecting each other. This means you can get your sources from the stage to multiple destinations at the same time, with separate gain control for each engineer and without having to split

the signal with dedicated gear.” The mixer’s channel strip – its standard EQ, filters and dynamics processing – is provided by Waves eMo plugins: eMo D5 Dynamics, eMo F2 Filter and eMo Q4 Equalizer, designed for maximum clarity and efficiency in a live environment. The LV1 also integrates smoothly with the Dugan Speech and Dugan Automixer plugins (purchased separately), which are easily accessible from each LV1 channel. Users can control eMotion LV1 using industry-standard hardware controllers, multi-touch screens and diverse portable devices, from four touchscreens to a single laptop or tablet. Whichever device you are using, the LV1 has the same intuitive workflow, with a user interface built for flexibility and speed. eMotion LV1 uses the Waves SoundGrid infrastructure for audio networking. It can be configured as a portable or stationary setup and can connect to any SoundGridcompatible I/O or server. This means users can easily carry the mixer and

ALCONS AUDIO SHIPPING THE LR18B LINE-ARRAY BASS Following early previews this year, Alcons Audio is now shipping the LR18B. The LR18B is the dedicated low-frequency extension to the LR18 compact mid-sized pro-ribbon line-array system. It can also be combined with any other Alcons pro-ribbon system, as subwoofer in both permanent and portable applications. The LR18B is designed for optimal deployment flexibility, as it can be used as single subwoofer or in multiples; as end-fire or cardioid array; together with LR18

or in separate sub-only arrays. All functionality is possible in stacked or flown configurations. For full system performance, the LR18B is to be driven and controlled by the ALC Sentinel amplified loudspeaker controller; driven by the ALC, the LR18B delivers full operation flexibility, maximum sound quality, and output power with long-term operation reliability. The signal integrity sensing prewiring ensures complete cable/ connector compensation between the LR18B and ALC, significantly increasing response accuracy and

reducing both linear and non-linear distortion to an absolute minimum, regardless of cable length and system impedance. Philip “Dr. Phil” de Haan, head of Alcons R&D: “With LR18B we are continuing our philosophy of bringing advanced transducer technology in our designs. The 18” is a newgeneration transducer, fitted with a large, dual- 4.5” voice-coil neodymium motor. This enables a significantlyextended excursion, thus SPL output, while maintaining a high sensitivity.” De Haan continues: “Specific attention in this design has been

paid to obtain lowest possible distortion. In combination with the SIS sensing circuit onboard the Sentinel, this combination of advanced technologies is a perfect match with our proribbon mid-high systems.”

NEXT-PROAUDIO INTRODUCES AUDIO TOOL SOFTWARE Audio Tool is the new free software developed by NEXT-proaudio with the goal to help end-users when configuring their systems (Speakers + Amplifiers). Reportedly, this exclusive and unique tool includes a database with all the passive speakers from NEXT-proaudio range as well as the available digital and analog amplifiers, M Series, MA Series and Powersoft X Series. The amplifier’s and speaker’s databases include several important

parameters, from each speaker and amplifier model, that grant the software the ability to calculate the optimum configuration. With Audio Tool the user can, automatically, get the best combination between speakers and amplifiers in order to get the best perfomance from both devices. Basically, the user inputs which speaker model and how many units per amplifier channel and the software sets the recommended

amplifier, according to the selected amplifier mode and technology (Stereo/Bridge and Analog/Digital). Besides that, Audio Tool, is also capable of automatically calculate the proper limiter settings such as Threshold, Attack and Release Times regarding the whole system settings. On the past, this task was very time consuming and at the end it wasn´t very effective because a lot of variables are on the play and most of the times the end-user is not able

to do such complex calculations. There is also a manual mode that allows the user to select which models, of speaker and amplifier, is using and get the convenient limiters and see the system’s performance through two very intuitive color gauges.

D&B AUDIOTECHNIK TO LAUNCH SL-SERIES’ KSL SYSTEM German audio technology company d&b audiotechnik will launch their new addition to its familial line array, the SL-Series. Reportedly, the KSL System is the versatile, no compromise smaller sibling of its big sister GSL. It is designed for sound reinforcement needs of any genre, mobile or installed, from large scale arenas, stadiums, and festivals to medium scale applications such as clubs, theaters, houses of worship, and performing arts venues. The d&b SL-Series represents a significant evolution in the design and performance of line array systems. The ability to control the full frequency spectrum minimizes low-mid frequency masking in the reverberant field, allowing system engineers to reduce the overall SPL

level in the venue, greatly improving the system’s intelligibility and dramatically cleaning up the stage monitoring environment. When used in combination with the d&b NoizCalc software, engineers, event managers, and promoters can benefit from powerful noise emission modelling solutions for system configurations on outdoor events of any scale. Werner “Vier” Bayer from d&b product management: “The SL-Series is the latest step in d&b’s continuing obsession with directivity control, acoustical performance, and optimal workflow. The industry and the environment in which we operate is constantly evolving and this means our systems are meaningful only when they deliver value to our customers and their clients. Premium acoustical performance for the highest

quality listening experience is but one dimension. Workflow and a fully engineered system solution is another, but we are now in an era where the control of sound dispersion and the minimizing of noise is of critical value to the events and the venues we serve. The SL-Series is therefore bigger in more than one d&b audiotechnik versatile KSL-Series, smaller sibling of its big sister GSL dimension and we are delighted to be launching shape with our own instincts and the KSL System to the market.” knowledge. INDUSTRY FOCUS: BIG STAGE LIVE SHOWS

ORGANISING BIG STAGE

EXTRAVAGANZAS Opportunities & Obstacles

I

ndia has come a long way since the last decade, when India did not have more than a handful of EDM festivals, with Sunburn being the pioneer. Cut to the present day and you see numerous multi-stage, multi-genre festivals. Most of the top EDM events in the country have unfailingly brought down some of the best international DJs like Martin Garrix, David Guetta, Hardwell, Tiesto and Dimitri Vegas. The success of EDM festivals like Sunburn, NH7 Weekender and others, has also boosted the rise in festivals of other genres like pop, folk, sufi, jazz, blues etc. In recent times, India has played host to some of the top international acts

November - December 2018

from across the globe. While over 45,000 music aficionados apparently filled up the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai for the Justin Bieber Purpose World Tour, reportedly around 80,000 attended British band Coldplay’s show in Mumbai. From American rock band Incubus to progressive metal band Dream Theatre, American pop rock band One Republic and pop singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran India has hosted them all. Bryan Adams has toured the nation four times since 1994. A prominent EDM festival organizer was quoted in an interview as saying that beginning with a zero-ticketing revenue, his show had graduated to 60-70

% revenue from ticketing sales. However, are big stage shows really as economically viable, with organisers getting the required ROI or is it all wool over the eyes.

Counting Sponsors, not Tickets Though the Indian live sound industry has grown exponentially over the years, it has still not matured to the point where it can drive business and profits purely from ticket sales. Music festivals and concerts in the country are designed around the sponsorship model as opposed to its western counterparts where gate money is the main source of revenue.

26

For most music festival organisers in India, 70% of the revenue comes via the sponsorship route and the balance 30% from ticket sales. “In India every show has to have some amount of sponsorship because of one reason - ticket prices in India are still not same as what they are abroad. In the western countries, people are used to paying anything upto USD 150 depending upon how big the act is. In India, our ticket prices start at Rs 2,000 or Rs 3,000, so there is no way to get a return on your investment purely from ticket sales. In the Indian context, there has to be a sponsorship model that can give you at least 60% of your cost. If you get 60%

It’s that time of the year again when event orgaisers and rental companies are busy prepping up stages across India for three days of heart pumping and feet stomping music. While the market for live music in India has grown exponentially in this last decade, there is yet much to be achieved. Though EDMs like Sunburn and VH1 Supersonic are a must attend annual pilgrimage of many from the young India brigade, these festival are nowhere close to their western counterparts like EDC and Coachella. Though India has hosted the biggest names in pop and rock, like Justin Bieber, ED Sheeran and Bryan Adams, many others are yet to experience the music mania in India. In this feature, PT explores opportunities and obstacles for organizing big ticket, big stage shows.

from some sponsors (and I am giving you a rule of thumb, it can differ from show to show) then the organizer has some hope that he can break even or even make some money. In India there is no concert that I know of which has made money if there are no sponsors, “says Neale Murray, Co-Founder & COO at Fountainhead MKTG - A Dentsu Aegis Network Company. However, he is quick to add that the scene for EDM music festivals maybe different from other genres. “The EDM market is very different and that can operate on a revenue model. In EDM, there is only one DJ and maybe a manager travelling with him. In the EDM model, I can image that the revenue model can sustain because inventories and other costs are not that high. Even

EDM performers are not as expensive as some of the international solo or band performers.”

Economies of scale Besides availability of dates, getting down an international act also depends on the artistes costs, as also their inclination to come down to India. For instance, David Guetta’s show in Bengaluru in early January last year was cancelled over security concerns. Is it right to say then that International artistes may actually demand more to perform in India due to aspects like Safety Concerns and air pollution, we ask. “Artistes will not charge us more because of security concerns, but they will demand that we should have more security measures in place. Yes, that does

maybe impact the show to a certain extent, but that is not the real impact per se. The main impact is because in India economies of scale does not factor in. In countries like the US, shows become cheaper for promoters because in one territory (the whole of North America is considered as one territory), the promoter can cover even 30 cities for the same act. So, just between United States and Canada itself, sometimes some of these big acts do only one show in these territories in a year. This is the main reason why many times an Indian show becomes a lot more expensive. The artistes come down to do only one show in Mumbai or sometimes include Delhi and/or Bangalore,” says Murray. “The artists have a fixed fee which is directly proportionate to their crowd pulling capabilities across the world. This does not change,” reinforces Cyrus Gorimar of Opium Events, the company that is credited to having brought down One Republic and Dream Theatre. “I am the only organiser in India dealing with big solo bands, who are the current A-listers. Hence it’s imperative for me to study the market well. When I decide on a content I do so firstly on the basis of Crowd Pulling capacity of the artiste and the respective CPC (cost per person to get them at the venue) and secondly on Sponsor Eyeball. A combination of these two puts me as an organizer, on a safe ground while also creating an experience for the audience as well as the band coming down,” he says.

Is it just Incidental Expenditure? Organisers have to foot the bill for everything under the sun - from artiste remuneration to, travel cost for the entire crew, transportation of backline instruments, excess baggage, five-star accommodation, food and drinks and local travel. “The riders which we receive for the international artists depends upon what they are already touring with. Most of the top international acts get everything down with them and travel with their gear for the entire tour. All we have to provide them is the PA system and the

power on stage; they get their own backline, instruments, microphones and consoles. Their own engineers and tech team are part of their regular entourage. But, it again depends from artist to artist and how particular they are about what they want,” says FOH engineer Farhad Daruwala. “That’s where the experience and importance of a good touring and rental company comes in as they need to provide their tech team with a PA system as per their specification. If they don’t travel with their own equipment it’s important for us to provide them with exactly what they want and match their tech rider to the best we can,” he adds.

Tickets for free Big Stage Live shows in India are not without their fair share of challenges, with the most deterring factor being low ticket prices (as compared to the west) but multiple taxes. Adding to the woes is disbursal of free passes. “Indian event organizers have to pay high taxes to remit the money. For instance if an artist is charging USD 100,000, we have to shell out an additional 35% more for withholding taxes, which the government charges us to remit those 100,000 dollars. Additionally, we have to give away complimentary tickets. Complimentary passes will always be given out, because sponsors demand them, but then at Orange Juice apart from the ones that we are obliged to give just to sponsors, we do not necessarily give out complimentary passes to the general market because we want people to come and buy tickets. In fact, we had once used a tagline, which read, “Complimentary kills Live Music”, because that’s what they do. The Indian mentality is such that people still want to try getting free tickets before they buy. However, I must tell you that a lot of the younger set of people, who I know, believes that if there is a good show then you should be buying a ticket. They don’t wait to get a complimentary. This is the buying mentality that we have to incarnate in India. This will change

In India there is no concert that I know of which has made money if there are no sponsors. However, the scene for EDM music festivals maybe different from other genres. Neale Murray, Co-Founder & COO at Fountainhead MKTG

Live Stage events in India are now immersive events delivering a 360° experience. Pictured here is the Electric Daisy Carnival debut in India in 2016 at the Buddh International Circuit in Delhi NCR. Stage designs and technicals for the event were impressive as EDC India gave Indian EDM fans a flavourful Vegas experience with the stages, kineticFIELD, circuitGROUNDS and neonGARDEN – exhibiting spectacular designs and production value that would be at par with EDM festivals elsewhere in the world in time; this is not going to change overnight and the more shows that happen, the faster this will come to play.” informs Murray.

Big Stage, Bigger Challenges Bogged down with additional issues like peculiar rules and regulations, red tapism, lack of a systematic process for a single-window clearance, lack of great venues and logistical challenges, India has in the past been witness to numerous live shows getting cancelled abruptly. While Guetta’s show, was called off due to security concerns, stand-up comedian Jerry Seinfeld’s show was cancelled apparently due to issues like licensing and parking. The technicians and the production team have their own challenges. “Small problems like venue permission issues and delay in getting power can end up creating a backlog in the production schedule. But these issues are today far and few. If it’s a very big production, then they already have a very good event and production company taking care of the riders so these problems are foreseen and avoided. Another challenge and rather an important aspect is giving importance to safety norms for the crew. Making sure they have all the required protective safety harnesses, flash lights and proper rigging gear while on the job. It’s good to see many production and rental companies now giving priority to this too,” says Daruwalla.

“We very rarely get a layout of the venue, so console location is always a fighting point. Very often, we have to set it up on the side or at the very back in the corner. This is not an ideal position for the console to be in; it’s infact nowhere even close to the ideal position,” says Vijay Benegal, FOH for trio

is provided to us is never sufficient because the industry doesn’t know and appreciate how much equipment we have to put in to get the desired sound quality.” “If you consider the kind of investment that we have made to procure these equipment and compare it what

To get returns on investment, organisers have to book big-budget international artistes to draw in the audience. In turn, big names need great opening acts or headliners. However, does paucity of good opening acts, act as a deterrent and impact these big shows? With most of India being largely inclined

Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy’s concerts. “In terms of time and schedules, I would say 90 percent of the time the stage is not ready when we arrive for sound check. This is mainly because the

we are being paid, then it’s not even close to big enough,” says Sachit Subramanian of NJSM rentals. Organisers on the other hand, have a different story to tell. “The vendors

to Bollywood, most of these artistes (and even EDM shows) have to rely on Bollywood for their acts. “There is no paucity of BIG bands in India. Some of the names are still around and have opened for the biggest bands in the world. Indus Creed, Parikrama and BRAHMA are a few. The issue is with the extra monies that goes into the technical requirement for the bands. As I believe in no compromise for any artist, the monies on the rider for the opening band goes up too. In addition to this, the time required for the respective opening act set up, eats into the budgeted time for the main act. I have some things lined up for 2019 wherein these will change for the better,” says Gorimar.

The vendors in India like to milk the entertainment agencies when they get involved with International Bands, touring India. The artists are most of the time very open to discussion with regards to certain elements of the technicals not being available here. The only aspect they hate is SURPRISES. Cyrus Gorimar, Director, OPIUM Events India

Bright Side event organisers do not want to spend money. They compromise on all these technical issues while wanting things to look fantastic. They are not ready to spend Rs 10,000 more to get better equipment or better vendor,” he adds. Warren D‘souza of Sound.com, one of India’s top rental companies echoes this sentiment. “The budget which

in India like to milk the entertainment agencies when they get involved with International Bands, touring India. The artists are most of the time very open to discussion with regards to certain elements of the technicals not being available here. The only aspect they hate is SURPRISES. Keep them updated and all sails through, says Gorimar.

The company states, “Conceived by Chandler Limited Founder and Chief Designer, Wade Goeke, the TG Microphone — following the mold of the REDD Microphone — is unique in design, functionality and sound; true to form, the TG Microphone isn’t a clone of any other microphone.” The TG Microphone is a solidstate, large diaphragm condenser microphone, featuring — as the name implies — the legendary TG sound, a ‘Dual Tone’ voicing system and on-board NAB/IEC

While TG Microphone’s historic TG color comes from its incorporation of three TG amplifiers, its ‘larger than solid-state’ sonics are enabled by its reliance on a dedicated power supply rather than traditional 48V phantom power. Other features include switchable Low-Cut filter (90 Hz or 50 Hz,) and 10 dB PAD. ith the advent of the new millennium, Our Lady of Lourdes Church with the seating capacity of nearly 600plus has recently saw a complete renovation and nowembraces cutting-edge AUDIOFOCUS ARES 8A line array, MTSUB218MKII, Quest QM3 and QM4 monitors along with a Quest and Allen & Heath QU 32 digital mixer integrated by AVL Install India Pvt. Planning & Execution The project had many technical and other difficulties right from the start to the completion. “The client had approached us after knowing our experience in this industry, and after visiting the sites installed by us.” Says, Taris, Technical Head. “As per client’s request, our team of technical experts visited the site and was convinced that the environment, which includes (length, width, height) is best suited for line array for sound and suggested to the church committee to go with AUDIOFOCUS Line Array system.” Understanding the fact that this project is going to stand up for ten to fifteen years of time span, the AVL Install team went all the way long. Santhosh Kumar, Director of Projects & Operations, AVL

Install India Pvt Ltd. mentioned, “It was not an easy project for us because we had to convince the committee members of the church while competing with multiple brands which had come in for the demonstration of their products.” Having heard and judged the demonstrations of multiple brands from different sources, the church committee finally decided to install AUDIOFOCUS. Taris says, “AUDIOFOCUS stood on in the segment because it was reachable to the audience lengthwise and capable to deliver clear vocal sound. They had also brought many experienced dignitaries for opinions and fortunately, all of them had given positive reviews which again made it easy for them to conclude on AUDIOFOCUS.”

Systems Integration AUDIOFOCUS ARES 8-Line Array has been suspended from the roof in the front corners of the sanctuary along

Client’s Brief The brief from the client was to provide an intelligent audio system that would enhance the sermons and readings for the regular congregants and

with MTSUB218MKIII. “There were two major reasons why we hang these four-line arrays on either side. Firstly, when you place the line array at such a height then it allows the sound to travel more and cover more area with clarity. Secondly, by putting the line array I had avoided putting speakers on the side walls.” explains, Santhosh Kumar. “Another major reason was the size of the boxes because the line array should not be an obstacle for the people’s eyes as there are many paintings and decors on the wall,” adds Taris. AVL Technical team has also installed Quest QM3 and QM4 monitors as they proved to be the best match after trying different combinations of the equipment in the church along with Allen & Heath QU 32 digital mixer. “The church doesn’t have any technical operator and therefore, we deployed Allen & Heath QU 32 digital mixer. It is a user-friendly device with multiple outputs given and programmed as show files to function as per the need.” Santhosh Kumar, commented, “Now, the Father of the church can control the audio setup by the mixer.”

Obstacles & Resolutions Mapping out an audio system on paper was one thing, but it became a completely different ballgame while executing. Santhosh Kumar, says, “Our team went to the church for installation and found that the construction had already been done with all the acoustics. But some of the leftover work like putting in the granite, cleaning up all the things etc. still continued which was a distraction for us to come and work.” He adds, “One of the major barriers that the installation team had faced was the Electrical wiring which was getting done in an emergency and the electrical load was not getting distributed equally on both the lines. As a result, one line was taking up the biggest load while the other line was not having that much load and the switch was getting off in the trials.” Later, the AVL team decided to correct it by having separate Electrical DB from different Phase for the audio system which never collided with the lighting of the premises.

Experience & Comments After a lot of obstacles, the AVL Install India completed the audio installation successfully. “Finally, we would say that the AUDIOFOCUS did well, and everybody liked it. There was a lot of stress we went through during the entire process because if we would not have done the electrical wiring properly then the speakers might have damaged.” Says,

Santhosh Kumar. During this entire setup, Sun Infonet team, the Indian distributors of Audio Focus has also played a significant role. Mr. Hemant Gaba, Senior Manager, Sun Infonet, commented, “This project was important for us as well as for AVL India Pvt. Ltd. team. Every installation project comes with a challenge and this project had its own.” He continued, “Keeping in mind that Church is a place where people go to worship and participate in the Holy Mass, also to listen to the Homily or Word of God. If the pastor or speaker is not audible, people may not be able to understand the majority of what is being said. Important points may be missed, which can create a disconnect between members and the church. Finding high-quality, dependable audio equipment makes a big difference. Integrating the audiovisual elements and using equipment that meets church needs can make a church service run smoother, allowing the message to be communicated more effectively.” Taris, adds, “We specially thanks Fr Jijo and the committee members for having the confidence in the brand AUDIOFOCUS and in our installation team. As a result, we were able to achieve the desired result and full fill their audio requirement according to their wish. This installation has widened the opportunity for AUDIOFOCUS for many more Churches who desires audibility and clarity.” After the installation, the services at Our Lady of Lourdes Church appears more dynamic than ever and already playing an important role in ensuring the church message reaches its followers. “When we thought about audio segment to be installed, we had many options in front of us and different brands came with demos. but we trusted in AVL teams suggestions and they told us to with AUDIOFOCUS ARES 8A and we selected the same.” said Rev. Fr. Jijo J Muringathery, Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Peechi. ” After installing the system everyone was excited to hear the audio with such a clarity and commented that this product ideally suits our church environment. Everyone who visits our church appreciates the audio clarity. “ Post the grand inauguration ceremony in September 2018, Our Lady Church is now open for devotees to visit and to experience an invincible sound experience.

OLD LOVES ‘Z’ is the last letter of the alphabet, and yet so many lighting equipment models that are considered breakthrough have a ‘Z’ in their name. Leading from the rear, so to speak. So what is it that manufacturers are working so hard to top each other? The usual barometer is to make a fixture brighter, lighter, smoother and carry more and more features. Features that compete with fixtures from a range of manufacturers. That got me thinking on what are the features I would covet in a fixture. What kind of feature would make a fixture my personal favourite? Now that I think about it – all of the fixtures I loved were phased out as quickly as I discovered the joys of working with them. What was it about the fixture that drew me to it? Why was that fixture not widely adopted? I can recall I loved the concentric ring fitting that you put in front of any Fresnel lensed fitting that gathered the light into a beam. Making any Fresnel into a blurred follow spot almost. Swinging a 2000 watt Fresnel like a follow spot was unwieldy and took a lot of physical strength (as far as I know); nobody made a swivel head for a 2000 k beast. I have seen the concentric rings on a 5K Fresnel but never actually used it in my shows. It was a great fixture to play with. In the old days (before truss) when we mounted our lights on scaffoldings it was easy to put a lighting rigger (secure on a chair amongst the lights and subtly refocus part of the rig during the shows. I’d seen this fixture used in a great West End production of Martin Guerre – at that time the most expensive musical mounted, by the team that had produced Les Miserable. Sadly Martin G did not do as well, but it remains one of my favourite musicals partly because of its amazing lighting plot. Then I loved the colour labs. One of the original DMX lighting fixtures that just sent simple 250 watt beams, but through chroma filters (breakthroughs of the day)

so none of the light was eaten by the filter. Today most fixtures use chroma filters (Not the LED ones). The bright almost Neon textures a huge stand out from the more muted colours from transmission gels use on pars. I would have loved to use chroma gels on pars, but the very nature of chroma gels would have made them melt under the glare of a decent par. Which brings me to my favourite light to date – The simple Par 64. About as simple and versatile a fixture as it can get. And, most reliable. To date – nothing can replace the throw and ‘HIT’ of a par. Trouble is – as concert lighting metamorphosised into stadiums the ‘Par Look’ was looked upon as yesterdays ‘Concert Looks’ and just could not find a space within all those beams throwing themselves around.

almost everybody else. Concerts today are all about a million lights flying off in all directions. It looks wow. And I marvel at the technology of controlling all those lights with and without visible cables. Respect. At the recent World Cup Hockey Opening ceremonies we saw far more lighting dribbles and pushes than the hockey field will ever hope to see through the tournament. I was looking at the display with envy. A day later I was walking past an exhibition of some theatre photos I had the joy of lighting years ago. A family walked past. The mother stopped abruptly and spontaneously exclaimed the name of the show. She grabbed her kids and brought them to the photo and excitedly pointed the photo out.

I guess what I am leading to is the inevitable learning of time. Things change. As a professional it is our job to stay on top of things for as long as we can. Fall in love with equipment but be ready to move on.

In fact if anybody here recalls watching Michael Jackson live at Andheri Stadium, maybe you will remember the great Roy Burnett lighting all the new songs with ‘Modern Lights’ and all the retro textured songs were lit almost exclusively with Pars in the most amazing Gels and shades. After a particularly beautiful stage production I had the opportunity to meet one of the greatest lighting designers in the world who asked me the most profound questions, ‘Why do Moving Lights have to move?” Only then did I realise that while the rig in the show was full of moving lights, we did not SEE a single light move in the show. In blackouts the fixtures changed colours, gobos and positions. Those same set of moving lights moved only in a blacked out stage to open up to at least a hundred different looks without anybody seeing the change. Genius to me. Unnoticed to

‘Remember that scene of that play I go on and on about......that’s it. That’s the play. That’s the scene. She then pulled out her camera and unselfconsciously got her kids to pose next to the photograph as a memory. As she was gushing on about relieving that experience of years before, the people I was with encouraged me to go up and get some credit for the photo. Being a retiring lighting designer happy to skulk in the shadows, I could not bring myself to do it. The lady walked away surrounded by her memories. Little knowing how happy she had made me. The usual under-appreciation that all of us on the ‘Dark side of events and theatre’ have had to live with. That is the seed of this article. Not one of the fixtures or gels used in that production of barely 10 years ago is still in use today. I am left wondering what are the technical gimmicks that have replaced that set

50

of equipment. And then I look at the photos of last week’s shows. Of course they are not as spectacular as the Hockey opening ceremony, but they seem to have attracted a decent number of likes on social media (If that can be considered a measure). Of course it would be great if a few years down the road someone will recall that image and identify it with the show they saw last week. I guess what I am leading to is the inevitable learning of time. Things change. As a professional it is our job to stay on top of things for as long as we can. Fall in love with equipment but be ready to move on. Fortunately equipment is not like wives. Advantage of wives – they can grow with us. Advantage of Equipment – when you discard the units, it may be just as emotional as abandoning a wife - but at least you don’t have to pay alimony! The lesson here is to cherish the equipment we have to play with. Understand it and make it do everything it can possibly doing its short life span. That way when it is time to retire it, we can do so with respect and know that we got the most out of every bit of equipment while we could. It will also open so many doors as you realise its inevitable short comings so you can in tune your search for a replacement. That of course leads to another famous saying. Keep your eye in the future but keep your foot in the past. (The views expressed by the author are his own personal comments and the magazine does not subscribe to them).

INDUSTRY FOCUS – BIG STAGE VISUALS

CONCEPTUALISING AND CREATING VISUALS FOR BIG STAGES EDM ACTS by VJ KayCee

The visuals on stage are obviously the most visible aspect of any live stage. In this article VJ KayCee, Founder of Pixadoo studios in Bangalore and the mastermind whose high-octane visuals have ignited EDMs like VH1 Supersonic, Cirkus Indigo and many more, took out time from his busy schedule to enlighten PT readers about the art of Conceptualising and Creating Visuals for Big Stage EDM Acts

November - December 2018

T

oday, visuals and EDM acts go hand-in-hand which is why it’s critical that there is perfect synergy between all the various teams working on an event. Like any industry, ours too sees a variety of trends and currently EDM concerts are leveraging large LED screen sets with equally large structures, integrating lights, visuals and lasers, and so on in a perfect time-coded sequence. So, if you’re at a concert and there’s a DJ performing you will experience all of these elements in an extremely synchronised manner. You can’t have one element without the other; it’s almost like a storyline, where each one has a role to play and at a particular time, in order to leave a strong impression on the audience. And world over we are witnessing this trend. Naturally, in any industry, you will

52

find challenges, more so in one that is considered relatively alternative. The industry in India is nascent, not from an adoption perspective but from a significance perspective. Everyone wants to invest in big events, popular DJs, aspirational visions, but not on actual visuals and visual artists. We need to move past the mindset of working for exposure, artists shouldn’t be put in positions as such. Talent, handwork, and creativity really deserve to be acknowledged and it’s unfortunate that we are still experiencing this on a regular basis. I see that crediting or rather the lack of it is another challenge that artists are facing. We need to ensure a healthy working environment to guarantee sustainability and success and by investing in artists and crediting those responsible for the work, then we are automatically taking a

VJ KayCee - Founder, Pixadoo An old-school Bangaloren, VJ Kaycee worked on a slew of odd jobs having dropped out from a mechanical engineering course before finally finding his calling in visual jockeying. From the very beginning, his work stood out owing to his unique geometric but organic style, varying his visuals depending on the genre he’s working with. Hands on since 2007, Kaycee strongly believes in evolving his style to incorporate ever-changing technology and at his shows, it is very evident that conceptual art goes hand-in-hand with the music. His work exudes old-world charm with a fusion of the new digital age and some of his notable works include spearheading visuals for all A.R. Rahman concerts, designs for VH1 Supersonic Festival Goa (2014 & 2015) as well as LED work at Chinnaswamy Stadium during the 2013 IPL which can be witnessed even to this day. step in the right direction. We’ve come to learn over the years just how important it is to find a working style that suits us; there’s no one rule or method of working that’s going to be ideal for all, especially when creativity is at the core of what we do. At Pixadoo, we spend a lot of effort in deeply understanding an event before anything else. What it’s about, communication objective, scale, venue, stage size and design, with an equal focus on the artist/s performing. Having clarity on all these key pieces of information lay the foundation for our work as visual creators to brainstorm with our in-house team of experts and identify a theme that then lends the way for various versions of that theme in the form of sketches. One thing I do want to emphasise here is the need to be on the same page as the client at every stage of the process. Simply sharing these sketches and ideas is not enough, it is imperative to ensure that they are visualising the content, in the way you intend, and a good way to do this is to go down to the minutest details in your sketches. I truly believe the success of an event lies in ensuring that the objective stays in

focus throughout the conceptualisation and creation process. Once the concept is sealed, we actually create the entire structure in a 3D environment to include all the elements we would use in the real world, working closely with the production head and

other members including sound engineers. From sound to engineering and from lighting to SFX and lasers, the one thing we guarantee to all our partners is a fantastic experience. The next step, and this is one that I especially ensure I am on ground for is the actual creation of the stage at the venue. This is where the 3D concept

of your audience, your visuals just won’t weave magic. The content creation process we follow involves the entire team working together to visualise and construct art work. We then create different themes based on the stage design and the event theme which are then established as the main looks for the stage. When there’s an artist performing, we

always try and match the looks as closely as possible. We also send the entire blueprint of the event to each individual artists’ visual team so they can customise their performance and leverage the stage design to their benefit. While I outline it quite simply, the visual creation process in itself is quite dynamic and can be elaborate. Sometimes we begin with simple sketches, and then move on to Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects and motion graphics. There are also times when we begin with a sketch and then make use of Maya or 3D Max to create the motion graphics and then use After Effects to composite the entire content piece. Whenever I can, I try to keep it basic where I use softwares like Resolume, Madmapper, Modulate and a few others but what I want to say is that if you are able to clearly understand the need and objective, you can create exemplary work even by just using images. If you look at the industry today, that in itself is considered alternative, and within that your role too is alternative so it’s important to leverage this and keep pushing the boundaries as to what’s possible. The route isn’t paved out for you, and that’s the beauty of it.

PROFESSIONAL FOCUS: VISUAL ARTISTS

THE VISUAL PACK Jash Reen and Joshua Dmello of Wolves Visuals, are the guys who are delivering some of the most electrifying and eclectic Big DJ stages on the circuit. From Sunburn to EDC, Beyond Wonderland, Nucleya, Flux Pavillion, the duo works on an extraordinary schedule of high profile EDM festivals. In this interview with PT they talk about the origins of Wolves Visuals, their work and where they are headed to. The Genesis With EDM becoming young India’s music of choice and DJs and event promoters endeavoring to sustain interest in the festivals, the quest for larger than life stages with overwhelming visuals has become commonplace. Acting as catalyst are ongoing advances in technology, which have been significant benchmarks for many VJs who are thinking out of the box when it comes to visuals. For Joshua Dmello and Jash Reen it all began from the Marvel superheroes and Mortal Kombat addiction days. “Josh and I grew up obsessed with over the top nineties comic books and video games. I think we were in the sixth

grade when a lot of artists from that world started pushing the envelope for what mainstream pop culture would accept. On one hand you had household comics like Marvel or DC and a company like Image Comics would come out of nowhere and shock their readers with the depth and grit in their art style. The same goes for gore-heavy games like Mortal Kombat. That allure to shock convention stood out over being told what to do in an art school or receiving any formal training. It’s also always been a strong communication point for us,” says Jash. “There were tons of animation courses and studios blowing up after we got out of college, but live visuals added

The bassPOD stage which has been an integral part of EDC, Las Vegas since 2012 was conceptualized and designed by a Los Angles-based design studio Vita Motus, but the content for the most recent incarnation of the bassPOD is courtesy the Wolves. this new technical dimension to the mix. You could come up with a left of center visual idea or storyboard as one part of the challenge, and then have to figure out how to scale this idea up arena size and get the attention of a wider audience,” adds Joshua. Jash and Joshua’s visual agency Wolves, started off by redefining 3D mapping installations and stage design for some of India’s most cutting edge nightclubs before scaling up to some of the most massive stages around the globe. “We approached every club we could to convince them to let us do a visual set- up. When we started in 2012, there was a large upheaval of clubs that wanted to feature alternative music and events. I think it had something to do with alcohol, tobacco and clothing brands taking a sudden interest in sponsoring shows with about three indie electronic acts under some cutting-edge event name and hosting it weekly. Two main venues - the erstwhile Cool Chef Cafe ( which now houses Slink & Bardot and Kaavo Meat) and the Blue Frog, Lower Parel (which is no longer operational) were the first to give us space to build DIY projection mapping set ups and we scaled it up from there,” informs Jash. “We were pretty committed to making every kind of space work, even if the angle to hang a projector was downright impossible. Trying to push content in those weird spaces made us value every pixel so when we did get bigger stages and displays we had a trained eye on detail. I’d say it’s the same process creating content for any surface as long as you can create a detailed piece

November - December 2018

on your own composition / canvas that still holds that amount of detail when it’s scaled up. We’ve never used fixed installs and have worked with different set ups each time,” adds Joshua.

Sprucing up the stage When people attend a music show today, they really expect it to be a “show”. With the flamboyance of the stage and the energy of the show’s visual content becoming an integral and important aspect of the entire delivery,

- 50 balance of both. We get the stage designs, cut it up to where the video screens could feature literal animated extensions of the set and usually end up with this whole new beast that keeps both departments happy, says Jash. In recent years, LEDs are being used extensively in large-scale live shows. It’s rare today to find a major music festival that doesn’t feature larger-than-life displays on stage. “The EDM industry is pretty much 100 percent on LED only stages right now and that’s not a bad

Stage design traditionally involves a lot of fabrication and elements that stay constant for the entire course of the event whereas visual elements like the LED displays or even lights evolve and really take that experience forward. Jash Reen

how much exactly is the visual artist’s involvement. “Stage design traditionally involves a lot of fabrication and elements that stay constant for the entire course of the event whereas visual elements like the LED displays or even lights evolve and really take that experience forward. For a long time, we’d have clients throw 80 percent fabricated stage designs to us and we’d have to make peace with small spaces to add video, that would rarely be of any use besides maybe seem like weird patches of lighting. We are now lucky to be part of a worldwide shift in the industry that’s seeing a 50

thing. In 2015, we managed to convince Sunburn to have a larger, all LED set for one of their arena shows. We stacked up about 35 ft of LED and animated this monolithic mechanized fortress (we later called the Imperial Guard) to shift form constantly on it. That little experiment definitely changed our approach to stage design drastically,” explains Joshua. Having said that Joshua is quick to point out that with budgets varying more frantically in India than any other part of the world, the duo is armed and ready to have to make the smallest LED layouts or inventories work. “We make our content in layers such that they can

58

be scaled up or brought down to its simplest form as the surfaces develop,” he says. Elaborating on one of the most challenging stages the pair has worked on, Jash says, “The Beyond Wonderland stage in 2017 was an absolutely immersive LED stage designed by Steve Lieberman and his company SJ lighting. The total LED usage was massive here but the actual space to work within those arches was very constricted. We pushed for three different ‘realms’ to shine through with the content. One was a ship bound on a hopeless voyage, an enchanted forest that looked like it was cut out of a Guillermo Del Toro movie and a steam punk labryinth of sorts. The content was designed to be pretty anamorphic, so if you stood at the absolute centre or the FOH position and looked towards the stage you saw a seamless piece of content and if you roamed around and looked along a single arch, you had plenty of standalone detail to pick up on as well.” With small-scale stages to large-scale stages using a blend of larger than life sets to augment live performances, projection mapping has become a favourite with many Visual artistes, especially for EDMs. However, with LEDs making for a much brighter output of light and allowing endless configurations, for the Wolves, the scales seem to tilt in favour on LEDs. “Projection mapping is always fun to work around, but usually suits art installations and more intimate layouts. It works best if you want to take an unusual or darkened space and bring it alive with motion graphic content. We prefer LED as a powerful, self-luminescent surface that can cut through the lights and other stage FX that crowd larger events like music festivals. At the same time, it doesn’t all have to be angular and boring. Using the LED effectively enough can really effectively change the way fabricated stage surfaces look,” says Jash.

The Vegas Extravaganza Giant Structures, Colossal faces, Sci-fi DJ booths, Conical Pods, Pyramids whatever the genre, there’s something tailor-made for everyone. The bassPOD stage which has been an integral part of EDC, Las Vegas since 2012 was conceptualized and designed by a Los Angles-based design studio Vita Motus, but the content for the most recent incarnation of the bassPOD is courtesy the Wolves. The new iteration followed up on previous 360 design strategies by immersing the crowd in heroic-scale sculptural art. Although Wolves Visual stepped in to create content and execute it for the 2017 edition, 2018 was the first year EDC debuted the new look for the stage.

“We have to give a shout out to Forrest Hunt who’s the Executive Producer over at Insomniac Events. He believed in our content and execution right off the bat and put us in touch with one of the most forward thinking design studio in Los Angeles Vita Motus who originally designed the bassPOD. For the rehauled version in 2018, we were able to go back and forth with Vita Motus to discuss concept notes of what the new structures symbolize and create a set of five environmental set looks based on an ambiguously titled ‘Space Monkey’ theme . The video screens added a different face to these bold sci-fi angular structures, especially for the structures that were up close in the audience. We based all of the content on the first arrival of these ‘space monkeys’ and that different people in the audience might process an alien invasion differently. Some visual content made the fabricated structures look like heavily mechanized military crafts. The other content made the stage look more organic and driven by peaceful biological beings,” enthuses Jash. The design complemented Insomniac’s recent rebranding, channeling modern aesthetic sensitivities into thematic sci-fi. “The

Detailing their choice of tools to bring their creativity to life, Joshua says, “We use studio grade animation software to put it all together and feed it into a pixel map that the LED screen or video surface providers usually provide us with. Pixel map is a fancy word for a tool used to understand how the most ballistic content will actually look on site and on stage. The software that has made and will always make this transition seamless from day 1 is Resolume. It evolves quick with every update and is rock solid for handling live visuals for the most demanding events.”

Vision With more and more opportunities for extravagant visual displays at sports events, weddings, corporate launches etc., presenting themselves, today, the scope for visual jockeys has extended beyond music festivals. While there are few visual design agencies at the moment, the number is surely and steadily growing. So where does Wolves see themselves going forward. “We’re at a really good place where

We use studio grade animation software to put it all together and feed it into a pixel map that the LED screen or video surface providers usually provide us with. Pixel map is a fancy word for a tool used to understand how the most ballistic content will actually look on site and on stage. Joshua Dmello

bassPOD definitely was and continues to be the most exciting stage show to put together,” he adds.

The Work Process When working on something as massive as EDC and other EMD shows, surely different elements come in to play while embedding imagination into the creative process and presenting it to the countless fans thronging the fests. “We always lock the video surfaces first and then settle on what the audience perspective to the content will be. If they’re a bit lower than the stage this could make for some menacing towering content. If they’re right up there with it, we want something that’s erratic, animation heavy and in your face. A 100 crude sketches later we finally settle on three solid looks that we’re convinced was always what that particular stage was meant to look like (often times it doesn’t make sense till we actually animate it and see the pieces move),” says Jash.

we can stay a Mumbai-based studio and feed screens all over the world with the portability in live visuals. Our clientele right now is 50 percent music entertainment and 50 percent corporate events. In the future, we might start looking into creating failproof ‘black box concepts’ for both industries so we can feed many tours, festivals over a larger period of time. It’s sort of already happening, but for now we do enjoy being out there in the field and operating / being personally connected to the content we make,” says Joshua. “We’re also still fans of the visual medium in its purest sense. We’re essentially an animation studio at the end of the day so it would be cool to pull back all these storylines and concepts we feed into our live visuals and give back into a medium like video games or film,” concludes Jash.

MARTIN AUDIO GOES INTERNATIONAL WITH BRADLEY WATSON Martin Audio has announced the promotion of Bradley Watson to the new position of International Sales Director. One of the company’s longest serving executives, Watson was instrumental in building domestic sales during the first decade of the millennium before leaving in 2010 but maintaining a close relationship in his capacity as an installer. Presented with the opportunity to re-join the company in September 2016 and assume the new role as Sales Manager EMEA he described the opportunity as “a perfect scenario”. Speaking of the latest promotion, Watson said, “Since my return to Martin Audio I have been proud to be part of a team that’s been

instrumental in bringing over 30 new products to market in just over 24 months.” He adds, “As EMEA Sales Manager, I inherited many longstanding relationships and distribution partnerships that my predecessor and good friend Martin Kelly worked hard to forge prior to his retirement, and I have greatly enjoyed the role to date.” However, he notes that the market has changed considerably in recent years, with Martin Audio pioneering a number of key technologies to assume a leading position in the pro audio industry. “With the advent of Scalable Resolution, in the form of Wavefront Precision, we have experienced well managed growth over the two years, with an exciting

product roadmap that will provide even greater opportunity to explore new market sectors.” Said Watson. Watson also mentioned that, “The new role as International Sales Director will offer greater scope, as part of the new Martin Audio family, to further influence and develop our business in these segments, alongside our territory managers throughout the UK, EMEA, APAC and LATAM.” Dom Harter, Managing Director, added, “Brad has been instrumental in driving sales growth in EMEA and fostering strong relationships throughout the territory. As Martin Audio has grown around the world, the need to introduce an International Sales Director role is prudent to help plan and execute

Bradley Watson, International Sales Director, Martin Audio our next wave of commercial success, and Brad is perfect to take on that responsibility.”

HARMAN BRINGS WORLD-CLASS SOUND TO INDIA’S URBAN FOUNDRY EATERY Munro Acoustics deploys JBL, Crown and Soundcraft solutions to deliver exceptional audio coverage and precise control for live music performances Munro Acoustics recently outfitted The Urban Foundry’s new location in Pune’s Kalyani Nagar neighborhood with an end-to-end HARMAN audio system. With several locations in Mumbai and Pune in India’s Maharashtra state, The Urban Foundry is a unique bar and eatery with an industrial aesthetic that incorporates brick, metal and glass materials. The Foundry’s new location features a performance area for live music, but the highly reflective surfaces in the restaurant made it difficult to

control the sound. In order to solve this challenge, management hired acoustic consultancy firm Munro Acoustics to design and install an end-to-end HARMAN Professional audio system comprised of JBL loudspeakers, Crown amplifiers and a Soundcraft mixer. “We wanted our new location in Pune to be different from the others, so we added a performance space for live music,” said Kishore Shetty, General Manager of Operations for The Urban Foundry. “This presented a challenge, as we had to ensure quality sound for performances while

retaining our signature industrial design. We chose to work with HARMAN Professional Solutions and Munro Acoustics because they understood our situation better than anyone else. The service was great, the process quick and it was our easiest installation yet. The sound quality here has exceeded my expectations, thanks to the experts at HARMAN and Munro Acoustics.” The Munro Acoustics team selected two full-range JBL AM7215 15” 2-way loudspeakers for the main array, supplemented by six JBL AC16 ultracompact 6” speakers as side-fills. JBL ASB6118 subwoofers with 18” Super Vented Gap (SVG) drivers provide high output and extended bandwidth for a full low-end response. To power the system, Munro deployed Crown CDi DriveCore 4|300 power amplifiers. For a streamlined mixing and monitoring solution, Munroe paired the compact Soundcraft EPM 6 mixer with JBL EON610 monitors. “The floor-to-ceiling metal posed a major challenge to the acoustics of the space,” said Kapil Thirwani, Partner at Munro Acoustics. “Our client emphasized the importance of live music at The Foundry, requesting that we make the space as performance-friendly as possible. The hard surfaces throughout

64

the space produced ringing reflections, so we had to position the speakers precisely to cover the audience with minimum interference from the room. Based on the design, our integrator Audio and Acoustic’s led by Prashant Nair recommended the new Application Engineering (AE) series loudspeakers by JBL specific for fixed install. This is the first time we’ve used the AE Series loudspeakers, and we’re extremely happy with the results. They’re easy to use and specially engineered for permanent installations, with a wide selection of models incorporating the latest loudspeaker technology. Plus, they’re easy to tune as needed.” “Controlling sound in a small venue with so much glass and metal in an enclosed space is no easy task,” said Prashant Govindan, Senior Director, HARMAN Professional Solutions India and SAARC. “I want to congratulate the team at Munro Acoustics for using their expertise to overcome this challenge and create a highquality, balanced sound system for The Urban Foundry. I also want to thank Munro for trusting JBL’s AE Series loudspeakers to deliver great results in this installation.”

PHAWA AUDIO INSTALLS PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH WITH P.AUDIO, DYNATECH, JTS AND MACKIE The prestigious Presbyterian Church at Moodamai, Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya, recently saw the installation of a new comprehensive sound system in the last week of October by Phawa audio and video entertainment. Phawa audio and video entertainment, Shillong, Meghalaya have done numerous church and auditorium installations in Meghalaya and many other Northeastern regions of India. They have majorly used the brands from Sonotone (Mumbai) because of their easy availability all the year round and with very reliable and affordable pricing, backup and spare parts from the Distributor (Sonotone). Having a moderately big area of 3600 sq. ft. and a height of 23 ft. inside the church, the committee decided to switch from the previous old system and install a

more professional one. Mr. R.P.Phawa, the owner of ‘Phawa Audio and Video Entertainment’ and the dealer of Sonotone Electronics products in Meghalaya and other Northeastern states, was contacted by the committee to survey and design the whole church system in tandem with the acoustic treatment with the experienced Mr. Wanbor assisting him on the project. Mr. Phawa and Mr. Wanbor did both, the sound installation and the acoustic consulting for the church.

With some amount of work needed to be put in on dispersion, direction, height in the perfect direction to avoid wasting of sound energy to the unwanted area and walls, the installation of the new and more comprehensive system did not come up as much of a problem. Another major aspect that was well looked after was - treating the installation in Church much differently from the Live sound type of installation, so that proper solemnness inside the church could be maintained. The sound system has thus been well appreciated for sound coherence,

ZOODIO PRO BOOSTS THE AUDIO EXPERIENCE AT MISS T The humble bylanes of Mumbai’s, Mandlik Road, Colaba, popular with visiting tourists, has welcomed a new and lively restaurant called Miss T. Occupying the two-storied bungalow, which formerly housed the Busaba restaurant, the restaurant is the brainchild of the Colaba Cartel team comprising restaurateurs Gauri Devidayal and Jay Yousuf of The Table and Magazine Street Kitchen fame and Sumit Gambhir, Pankil Shah and Abhishek Honawar, promoters of Woodside Inn, The Pantry and Bombay Vintage Miss T, which is operational since August, is a South East Asian restaurant and cocktail lounge with chic interiors and an impressive menu. Designed by Zubin and Krupa Zainuddin, the restaurant has plenty of booth-style tables in deep blue, leading up to a T shaped bar. The food of the restaurant has borrowed from Southeast Asia’s Golden Triangle Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar, with an addition of Vietnamese cuisine. To recreate these flavors Miss T has brought two consulting chefs - Bawmra Jap of Bomra’s, Goa and Vietnam’s Duc Tran who are responsible to ensure the food is consistently good. The otherwise tranquil music which is a little bit louder at the Bar is courtesy an audio system deployed by Dylan Hilton of Mumbai based sound installation and Consultancy Company Zoodio Pro. Zoodio Pro consultancy, which has designed the audio for a number of projects including the

Warehouse Lounge (featured in the Sept-Oct issue of PALM technology) and the recently opened Rude lounge in Ulhasnagar, has been in the sound industry since more than a decade and has a team comprising of skilled sound engineers, acoustic consultants, and professional sound installers. The audio for the Warehouse lounge, Thane was completely designed and installed by Zoodio Pro and the company is responsible for after sales service,

which includes maintenance and servicing of the Audio at the venue. Explaining the brief provided by the client, project manager and coordinator, Dylan Hilton says, “For the client, it was of utmost importance to have the best possible audio coverage with a punchy vibe for the night and which can still be functional as a smooth and elegant restaurant during the day. However,

without compromising with the graceful interiors of the restaurants. After taking the client’s perspective under consideration, we thought and planned to deploy six Niles DS7mp in-ceiling speakers in the seating area.” The bar area is sound reinforced with two Nova Acoustic KIRA 5 supported by 1-12inch subwoofer. “For the bar area, we felt that the

best-suited speakers would be the NOVA Acoustics KIRA 5 due it’s size and dynamics which is supported by the 12-inch sub. For the sound quality to be evenly distributed the speaker power & system alignment is managed by crown amplification while the sectioning is accomplished by a pair of Drive Rack Venue 360 crossovers.” In addition to this, Zoodio Pro has deployed the EViD3.2 compact full-range loudspeaker at the reception area and the private section. The EVID 3.2 is an ideal loudspeaker for indoor and outdoor applications requiring high-quality sound. Its shape and size make it nearly invisible for use in background/foreground music systems for restaurants, bars, patios, retail, and other applications. For those in quest of a restaurant cum lounge, boasting of great menu accompanied by a sexy interior and great sounding music, Miss T may well be the most impressive openings this year.

MEYER SOUND INTRODUCES USW-210P COMPACT NARROW SUBWOOFER Meyer Sound has introduced the USW-210P Compact Narrow Subwoofer, a self-powered loudspeaker providing robust forceful low-frequency reproduction in a slender form factor that is ideally suited to space-restricted installations or very small performance stages. The dual 10-inch driver configuration produces greater output than typical single 12-inch designs, making the USW-210P a preferred alternative wherever convincing bass power must be combined with minimal cabinet width and depth. “We created it for customers who want superior, full-range music reproduction in retail outlets,” says Pablo Espinosa, Meyer Sound’s vice president & chief loudspeaker designer. “Because their architect and interior designer had limited the dimensions allowed for loudspeakers, we made USW-210P to fit the space. It exceeded all performance expectations and we decided to make it available in our product line.” The USW-210P has an operating

peak SPL of 126 dB free field at 1 m using pink noise. The long, slender bass reflex cabinet employs the same port design as Meyer Sound’s flagship 1100-LFC low frequency control element for high efficiency and low port distortion. Cabinet dimensions are 41.33 inches (1,049.78 mm) high, 12.0 inches (304.8 mm) wide and 12.0 inches (304.8 mm) deep. A slanted connector panel allows mounting flush to a wall surface with cables connected. Weight is 56.0 lbs (24.6 kg). The USW-210P cabinet houses a two channel Class D power amplifier with dedicated onboard processing including crossover, driver protection, and frequency and phase correction. The built-in crossover accepts fullrange signals, facilitating daisy-chain system configurations for signal distribution, and eliminating the need for external crossovers in smaller systems. The Intelligent AC power supply provides automatic voltage selection, EMI filtering, soft current turn-on, and surge suppression.

comprehensive monitoring of loudspeaker parameters from a Mac or Windows-based computer running Compasscontrol software via the RMServer interface. Optional XLR 5-pin connectors allow the use of composite cables for carrying both balanced audio and RMS signals. The USW-210P cabinet is constructed of premium birch plywood and is coated with a durable, black textured finish. A stamped steel grille protects the drivers. Options include Meyer Sound weather protection and custom color finishes for specific cosmetic requirements. The USW-210P is supplied standard with M8 mounting points at top and bottom. In addition to horizontal placement, the USW-210P also may be mounted free-standing in a vertical orientation (connectors at top or bottom) using an optional aluminum base plate. A U-bracket for wall or ceiling mounting also is available as an option. The versatile USW-210P integrates

THE RISE OF PORTABLISM Hang the DJ indran

Reji Rav

Introduction Portablism - aka. portable turntablism - is a recent cultural phenomenon which has been achieved through millions of tiny items on the wish lists of day-dreaming turntablists, over the last decade or so. But before we dive into its roots, emergence & developments, this article also aims to make you aware of the rise in a new breed of musicianship where the artist is also now getting immersed into hacking/DIY culture with the aid of inexpensive battery powered musical gadgets.

Roots & Development The earliest draft of this concept was etched by the legend DJ Qbert, where he had designed an experimental turntable (with an integrated mixer) for Vestax in 2005 called the QFO. It was primarily aimed for the niche turntablism markets but like all Vestax products, they were expensive, bulky & manufactured in limited numbers. The QFO conceptually was the finished product of a mega Japanese company - a concept where all turntablists could enjoy the convenience of just having a compact scratching setup, barring the traditionally beefy 2x Technics SL1200 & a quality scratch mixer console. Since this dream was not affordable by all, turntablists started to tinker with their smaller battery powered record players (with an inbuilt speaker), which you could carry on record shopping expeditions. One of its most popular iterations around that time was the PT01 model, manufactured by Numark & Ion. They were inexpensive, easy to maintain & its plastic casing was conducive for hacking & customizations. Coincidentally, there was also a movement in making third-party & high-quality crossfaders - to replace sub-par components in any mixer of your choice. As the developments in the crossfader technology got better, cheaper & smaller, some turntablists (with the aid of some casing,

The Vestax QFO - the predecessor of Portablism

November - December 2018

velcro & deft wiring) combined the PT01 with these new crossfaders & voila - portablism arrived. Its prospect was highly appealing for all of those DJs who wanted to learn to scratch without investing big bucks on 2x turntables & a mixer. The concept blew up in a big way internationally, which also birthed the rise of strictly vinyl labels releasing limited edition 7 inch scratch tools. Numark quickly took note of the rise in sales of its PT01 model & quickly released their highly successful PT01 Scratch model in 2016.

approach & trend has never been witnessed before in any other DJ product & industry. Portablism has single-handedly revived the dying art of turntablism worldwide & also given birth to niche portablism related content & events. There are now special clinics, Youtube creators & content, active Facebook groups, global online DJ battles & this year, portablism has been officially recognised & venerated by DMC.

Forecasting Future Portablism Trends Even with its wild success, the PT01 Scratch is admittedly not the perfect product. For example, it’s pitch control is very unstable, making it impossible to beat mix on it for conventional

PT01 Scratch & its Customisability In version 2.0 of its PT01 model - the inexpensive PT01 Scratch - Numark had made a portable turntable with a multi-directional/adjustable scratch switch (more like a pseudo crossfader) integrated within the casing of the unit. This switch is a very light switch that pivots (unlike the sliding nature of a conventional fader) with a fader cap on it. When a DJ cuts & scratches with a fader, he/she technically is switching the turntable’s audio signal on & off - a feat which is easily achieved in theory & practice with the scratch switch. Simultaneously, a few eminent scratch enthusiasts & companies from the scene like Jesse Dean Designs, Turntable Training Wax, Bihari Designs, portablismgear, Solid Cutz, Raiden, Stokyo, Mixfader, Serato & Magma started to produce a plethora of components/accessories revolving around PT01 & PT01 Scratch customers. Now, there is a really wide (& ever expanding) range of products available for the aspiring portablist. There is now a good range of external & internal crossfaders - utilising never heard before Bluetooth & optical technologies - to replace the scratch switch. Carbon tone-arms to house proper cartridges (some with an integrated cue light). Machine milled high-quality metal platters for record stability. Easy to integrate start/stop switches, ultra pitch controls, power break out & phono pre-amp circuit boards. You could conventionally run these decks using a wall socket or on batteries - which makes it clunky & not portable. A popular hack to beat this issue would be by running them on easily available USB power banks - with the aid of special 5V to 12V step up USB power cables. A few other accessories worth mentioning would be more powerful speakers, custom knobs/fader caps, custom printed faceplates, various styles of carrying bags & 7inch timecode records for further expanding the scope of portablism with existing DVS systems. On purchasing some of these accessories, you would have to open up the PT01 & indulge in some soldering & tampering of its original internal circuits - making its warranty void. However, these original circuit boards are inexpensive & easily available through Numark - encouraging DJs to give the DIY ethos a try safely. You could also order online a fully customised portable i.e. if you wouldn’t want to take the DIY route. This new

76

Numark PT01 Scratch - the fire starter DJing. However, as it is a simple & easily hackable electronic product it is just a matter of time for the solutions for such problems to surface from the manufacturers through its future iterations, or from the users through newer components & hacks. The PT01 already has a contender - the soon to be launched 7” Portable Scratcher - a fully crowdfunded portable turntable, with more bells & whistles, which were implemented immediately by learning from the feedback from the sudden success of PT01 & rise of portablism. I could easily see big DJ brands like Pioneer, Reloop & Denon getting into the portablism game to fill & capitalize on this void - making superior portables (with stronger metallic bodies & flagship components/ features) from their years of experience in making industry standard turntables. But before all that happens, you need to realise that there is still a lot of potential waiting to be tapped in the Numark’s PT01 models. With minimal inner components, most of its body is hollow, which could accommodate additional gadgets & thingamajigs - with some planning & simple hardware tools. This is exciting as it gives portablists the ultimate feature that they are seeking for at the moment - an inbuilt Raspberry Pi computer, eliminating the need to carry a laptop - making it furthermore portable. On a final note, all eyes are solely on Numark at the moment. After all, they were the first to capitalise on the portablism boom with their PT01 Scratch model. Hopefully, they would wow everyone again with version 3.0. Thanks to them there is a thriving portablism culture now, which is surely not going to fizzle out in the decades to come.

D&B GSL Series Twelve years after releasing its J series, D&B Audiotechnik introduced the GSL loudspeaker system, which is a part of d&b’s SL-Series and sits right at the top of the company’s loudspeaker product range. There are four loudspeakers that make up the GSL-System, of which the GSL8 and GSL12 form the core. Both are 4-way boxes that are identical aside from their horizontal dispersion pattern. Like J8’s and J12’s before them, the GSL8 is an 80° box and the GSL12 is its 120°equivalent used for near- or mid-field applications. Inside the GSL cabinets, the low-frequency section consists of dual forward-facing 14-inch drivers and two side-firing 10-inch drivers, both utilizing a bass reflex design. The mid-frequency section consists of a single horn-loaded 10-inch cone driver; the high-frequency section consists of three 1.4-inch exit drivers housing 3.4-inch voice coil diaphragms. The GSL System is a complete solution created specifically for the largest sound reinforcement applications in significantly sized arenas, stadiums, and festivals, to accurately deliver any performance style or musical genre.

Bose Professional S1 Pro Multi-Position P.A. System The new Bose S1 Pro is the company’s smallest and most affordable portable PA, and reportedly, its brilliant design is ideal for singer-guitarists who perform on stages where power outlets are inaccessible. Fully loaded and weighing in at just 15 pounds, the Bose S1 Pro is the ultimate all-in-one PA for soloists, event speakers, and smaller acts. Whether kept tilt, seat, or mount, the S1 Pro delivers rich, even coverage to an entire room, with Auto EQ to eliminate hotspots out on the floor. Two channels with independent EQ, reverb, and ToneMatch technology promise flattering reproduction of voices and instruments, while a dedicated third channel with 1/8” aux input and onetouch Bluetooth pairing and streaming handles music playback. A convenient carry handle facilitates speedy load-ins and setups, while a factory-installed Li-ion battery gives unmatched PA portability. Separate microphone, guitar (XLR-1/4-inch combo jacks) and auxiliary inputs (auxiliary input audio also can be streamed wirelessly via Bluetooth); a ¼-inch line output and a three-channel mixer with individual bass, treble, reverb, as well as ToneMatch controls for channels 1 and 2, make the S1 Pro a true all-in-one PA system. An optional, rechargeable lithium-ion battery enables hours of performance, without needing to plug into a power outlet. Unlike many compact speaker systems, the S1 Pro does not have a narrow “sweet spot,” but instead disperses full-range sound quality across an impressively wide sound field. Bose states that the S1 Pro is ideal for audiences of 50 or fewer, but it easily can be used to fill larger rooms with volume levels that are just above the average volume of conversation. The ToneMatch feature instantly optimizes the sound quality of guitars and vocal microphones to provide rich, full, distortion-free tone with impressive clarity, while the treble and bass EQ controls allow further refinement, without radically altering the sound. The built-in reverb may be a no-frills “meat and potatoes” effect, but it provides pleasant, natural-sounding room ambience effects that are particularly useful when playing outdoors.

Outline – Superfly Superfly by Outline is the latest compact line-array containing design DNA from one of the most influential loudspeaker designs of the last 15 years, Outline’s Butterfly. Weighing under 38kg (83.8 lb) per module, Superfly is the lightest, most powerful 3-way, 10” quad-amped line-array system within existing Outline portfolio with 2 x 10” LF, 2 x 8” MF and 1 x 3” HF loaded on a DPRWG wave-guide. Nothing as compact or lightweight comes close to this system which can be readily paired with any of the firm’s subwoofer designs. The LF extension from the individually-driven dual 10” drivers is below 50Hz and for many applications, Superfly’s ultrawide bandwidth and clarity make it the ideal solution without the need for additional subwoofers. Outline Superfly appears as a work of art which offers 90°horizontal propagation. Output beyond the 90°range drastically reduces the sound pressure level. This allows designing the coverage of the sound space in a very precise way. The angulation and rigging system is the same as in the Outline Mantas 28 system - angle is selected using two retractable elements and locked with pins from the bottom and from the top. Outline Superfly is a very exciting proposition among compact line systems. In its class, it will certainly be one of the leaders.

feel that it is been better before because participants were much more prepared. When I won these competitions, I practiced hard for one year for six minutes set and took part to win and I won. Here, I can see a lot of mistakes because the Pioneer player is not easy along with many different features, which hardly anyone uses.” He adds, “I could also make out that some of the guys who took part are actually playing in clubs and therefore, they have that edge of that practice and to win any competition it’s important that one should know their equipment very well.” DJ Raj: “The show was really good. I always appreciate all the activities taking place for DJ Fraternity. Especially, when these aspiring DJ’s meet experienced DJ’s and share their experience with these talented participants it helps them a lot. On the other hand, when we see these participants performing then we also get to learn a lot from them in terms of new technologies been introduced recently.” DJ LLYOD: “I think this platform which Vardhaman is giving to these aspiring DJ’s is definitely an advantage because we never had this trend in our time for us to come and showcase our talent. Also, because of these events lot of our Indian talent are coming up and getting international exposure, which is otherwise really difficult for someone who wants to start his career in these fields. This is a great step that these guys have taken to encourage aspiring DJ’s to show their talent.” V DJ Shaan: “The show was good because I got to see many underground DJ’s. From underground DJ’s I meant with the people who can play hip-hop and they don’t get a platform like this and therefore giving a platform for somebody like this is a really good step.” DJ Wills: “I am happy to see these participants because they are trying to understand the equipment upgrades. Earlier, if anything new came out in the market, they were oblivious to it.”
