BACKYARD DECORATING ... spate of recent burglaries is sending homeowners seeking hidey-holes for their valuables — secret caches where they can store valuables, from gems to documents. But finding the right home safe can be overwhelming, given the number of choices. Factors to consider range from what spaces are available to what level of security is required. “Usually, when people come in and they’re looking for something to store their records in, we would suggest a safe that’s less expensive, usually like a fire-only box,� said Sophia Jehning, office manager of the family-owned Mountain View Door Closer Key & Lock. “When people come in and they’re talking about expensive items that are insured, we recommend the safe based on the monetary value of what goes inside. It’s not to pry, but if they have insurable items in the safe, they need a safe with a proper UL rating,� she said. The Jehnings have been in the lock and safe business since 1972. In the Jehning Family Lock Museum, located on Castro Street, thousands of old locks and antique safes are on display. “Generally, when people come in, I recommend that the purchase of a safe is not something to go into too hastily,� Jehning said. “We don’t recommend making snap decisions about it. I think it’s a good idea to research what you want and work with someone who knows what they’re doing.� Before investing in a home safe, have a plan for installing it, Jerry Kruss, owner of Certified Lock & Safe Inc. in Palo Alto, said. “The best time to install a safe is when you’re building a new house,� Kruss said. Planning ahead can lead to a well-hidden safe that can more easily be installed when walls and floors are unfinished. Kruss recommends bolting down safes that weigh less than 750 pounds and not putting safes that weigh more than 750 pounds on an upper level. Home safes can be hidden in any number of different ways, including built into the walls, hidden below the floor or

placed above ground. They can be hidden behind wall panels, behind or under fireplaces, beneath carpeting, within a closet or even in wine cellars. Often, homeowners can be very imaginative, Kruss added. When choosing the proper safe, locksmiths suggest having a purpose in mind and an idea of the contents. Home safes typically come in four different varieties — fireproof, burglar-proof, composite (a combination of fire- and burglar-proof) and data or media safes. All safes are given an Underwriters Laboratories (UL) rating to determine the amount of attack by a burglar or heat that they can withstand. UL ratings range from a Class 150, a fire safe that can sustain an internal temperature less than 150 degrees, to Class TXTL-60, a burglar safe capable of withstanding high explosives such as nitroglycerin. Fireproof safes, also known as fire-resistant safes, are designed to keep their contents from burning up during a fire. They are rated by the amount of heat they can withstand during a set amount of time. A safe with a UL 72 rating follows the highest standards for fire-rating test procedures. Fire safes are typically the least expensive safes to purchase, Kruss said, costing anywhere from several hundred dollars on up. However, because of the materials they are made from, fireproof safes are not impervious to the tools used by burglars. Entry systems into safes can come in several different varieties, including key, combination dial, digital or keypad, or a combo of all four. Many home safes are designed to be hidden, though luxury models and gun safes are decorative in appearance and can be an attractive addition to any room. But all home safes are more convenient than using a security deposit box at a bank, noted Kay Gopp, office manager at Security Safe USA in Hayward, given a bankâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s limited hours. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Some people are more comfortable buying a safe and putting it in their home because theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re concerned with the banks,â&#x20AC;?
