Palo Alto
Welcome to info Palo Alto Our 16th annual INFO Palo Alto resource guide was designed as a handy reference, easy to tuck into a drawer and pull out just when you’re stumped for some local fact. In a sense, INFO is Palo Alto’s version of Trivial Pursuit: • When did residents approve a water system, the first step in creating its city-owned utilities? 1896
• When did the city buy its first computer? 1961
community | p14
Galen Stolee
• When was the first traffic law passed (with the speed limit “a slow trot”)? 1905 • When did the city pass its first no-smoking law? 1975 Beyond a historical perspective and plenty of demographics (median home prices, average rent, Palo Alto’s largest employers), INFO offers everything you need to live in this city, from signing your child up for school or soccer to finding where to go for senior housing. Listings encompass the arts, community, outdoors, recreation, education, public officials and government access, even how to get around. In addition to the thousands of listings inside, you can visit www. PaloAltoOnline.com (select Community Resources from the list at the left) and read an expanded version, as well as find additional items that we simply ran out of room to include in this print edition.
Our cover photo this year is of Igor Polk and Cecilia Sung demonstrating the tango in the Jessica Saal Town Square at the new Oshman Family Jewish Community Center — part of the center’s free outdoor concert series. It was taken by the Palo Alto Weekly’s staff photographer, Veronica Weber. If you have suggestions for next year’s content, please e-mail editor@ paweekly.com. We would love to hear from you about making INFO even more useful.
Norbert von der Groeben
Online you’ll also find information about our surrounding communities, including Stanford, Menlo Park, Atherton, Portola Valley, Woodside and Mountain View, as well as regional information.

Roller & Hapgood & Tinney IMPORTANCE OF FUNERALS
Since time immemorial, funerals have been a way for families and friends to come together to celebrate a life, create a sense of community, share memories, tears and even laughter. Experts agree these comforting rituals help bring acceptance and closure, allowing those left behind to move on. We are the Peninsula’s premier funeral home and cremation service dedicated to serving all faiths. We have been in Palo Alto for over 111 years – family owned and operated for four generations. We are independent – answering only to our community. When a death occurs, you and your family will be involved in making many important and personal decisions. You need not be alone. We can answer your questions and help you understand your options – funerals, cremations, memorials, tributes, and receptions. We also offer pre-need arrangements. Our facilities include a large non-denominational chapel, viewing rooms, a large reception room with catering options, ample parking and other unique architectural features, including our indoor atrium.
WE OFFER ON-LINE OBITUARIES
FAMILY OWNED & OPERATED FOR FOUR GENERATIONS The family business was established in 1899 when Josiah Roller organized his first funeral. In those days, bodies had to be transported by horse and buggy either to San Francisco or San Jose for burial. Josiah agreed to make the arrangements in exchange for help in establishing a funeral home in Palo Alto – something he thought was long overdue. As the only funeral home this side of San Francisco, Roller’s business quickly grew.
GOOD EMPLOYEES ARE ESSENTIAL TO A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS In keeping with the belief of our founders, our staff of professionals is knowledgeable, caring and sincere – qualities that are invaluable during your time of need. Palo Alto is a community rich in religious and cultural diversity. Our staff is well trained in the traditions and faiths that surround us.
