by David Ruiz magine a house where no flat-screen TV dominates the living room. Instead, seating faces the sliding-glass doors, looking out on a backyard that is integrated with the home’s open architecture. Allison Olson, of Dreamscapes Landscape Design, will be offering a class at Palo Alto’s Gamble Garden, on Oct. 15, informing homeowners on low-cost design changes to transform and expand their living space. Her lecture will cover mid-century housing and gardening, including Eichler homes. Joseph Eichler, 1950s real estate developer, borrowed from the architectural stylings of Frank Lloyd Wright to bring cohesive, unifying design to the masses. These kinds of design gestures involved atriums, foyers, a closeness to the land and open spaces lacking specific designations from one another. Walls, opaque doors and low barriers are absent in these houses — the user chooses how to occupy the space.

At top: A sunlit, red atrium draws attention from the eye and invites the user to move forward through the loosely defined space, accented by sliding glass, transparent doors. Above: Low, wooden fences create a designated space outside with a tree as the centerpiece. The outside of the house becomes just as intriguing as the inside. Left: Succulent plants line an outside patio with seating. Visible beyond is the house, complete with floor-to-ceiling glass windows and sliding doors, increasing the relationship between indoor and out.

Eichler landscape (continued from page 45)
Olson will talk about how to properly connect the garden of a house with the house itself. She will cover a vast array of topics, ranging from what plants to surround the house with as well as the shape of the garden itself. One of her points — to curve or not to curve — deals with the validity of curvilinear forms used in the garden of a house with strong rectilinear elements. What matters most is that the garden and the architecture of the site match; a lack of communication between the two creates an overall disjointed living space, she said. “I like to find out a person’s comfort plants, Olson said. She encourages homeowners to think about what kinds of plants they feel most comfortable with, beginning with the homeowner’s idea of home — perhaps what they grew up with. “Creating a space is most important, she said. These spaces will rarely, if ever, be the same, depending on the individual. Environmental responsibility remains a strong factor in her design, as well. “I consider myself a steward of the land, she said, looking out over the eco-lawn she just installed for her client in Los Altos Hills. Despite the larger size of the site, the design tenets remain the same: a heavy use of succulents, handselected plants by the user all in coordination with a larger theme, and a strong placement of these plants from the most visible spots within the house, inviting the user to extend the living space beyond the physical borders of the inside. Much of Olson’s lecture will focus on vegetation that requires less frequent watering and can survive easily in the California climate. “Form, function and flow, Olson said, briefing her design process in a few short words. Pragmatism pushes strongly in her design, doing away with waste and refuse. Sometimes a

client will ask for something that may be a nice idea, but won’t really be used. Olson said she would discourage a project that didn’t make sense. Born in Beaufort, S.C., Olson moved to Los Angeles when she was 2 years old, living there for the majority of her life. At the age of 4 her mother took her to a Frank Lloyd Wright site in Pasadena, where she had her “first real revelation of a sense of place. Her interest in architecture and spatial understanding would develop over the years, her mother pushing her forward into art as she got older. Before starting Dreamscapes Landscape Design, Olson explored architecture by working as an interior designer. Later, she would go to Foothill College in the Environmental Horticulture program for landscape design and soon realized her passion. Interior design was too “static as she puts it, not allowing for as much control because the space itself had already been created. Landscape design is a different story. “There’s serendipity with these plants — they’re alive. There’s tens of thousands of plants so you can play. You’ve got a huge palette to play with, especially in California, she said. N Editorial Intern David Ruiz can be reached at druiz@paweekly.com. Garden tips for October Much to do: harvest, plant and clean up by Jack McKinnon ctober is harvest month. It is also planting and cleanup time. There is plenty to do in our gardens — plenty of shopping in the nurseries and hardware stores, plenty of crafts to engage in that will make the season fun and colorful. I can almost smell the bread baking and the pies cooking. Let’s get to work and we will have a wonderful winter to look forward to. Here are this month’s tips: 1. First of all, get out and clean everything up. Prune dead or scraggly growth, rake up debris, deadhead everything and do some preliminary pruning to thin out excess growth. Don’t do your winter pruning yet though; it is too early. 2. Stop fertilizing roses now. This will give them a chance to slow down and go dormant. Here in California roses seldom go completely dormant (especially west of the Sierras), but they go somewhat to sleep and that is what we want. 3. If you have worm boxes, this is a good time to separate them out and clean everything up. You can then give them a new bed of green and dry matter (leaves and produce trimmings) and they will get working on that. Use the worm castings and juice to prepare your beds for winter crops and flowers. 4. Prepare your winter beds. This means digging them up, adding compost (including worm products from above), fertilizer and plants or seeds. 5. Check deer fences, gopher wire and any bird netting that may still be up (don’t leave bird netting up after harvest; plants need growing room). Make sure deer fences are secure at the ground level. I have actually seen deer crawl under fences (it’s pretty cute). 6. Make your front-porch decorations now. Bundle up a few corn stalks on either side of the door and place an assortment of gourds and pumpkins at their base. If you are really into it you can make an original scarecrow. I like to have a theme with a scarecrow like mother with baby scarecrow or extreme scarecrow or surfing scarecrow. You get the idea. 7. Time to go snail and slug hunting. There are several ways to dispatch them. I lived in La Honda for 10 years and we had humongous banana slugs. We would give them flying lessons. They never learned. You can give them to chickens or ducks — they love them. Or try feeding them corn meal and cooking them up with garlic and butter for your own escargot. Enjoy. 8. Plant bulbs and over-plant the beds with primroses, pansies and violas. Plan your color scheme to compliment both varieties. At Sunset Magazine we had two pots with tulips in them. One had purple tulips and the other had orange ones. We over-planted them with two-tone orange and purple pansies. I will never forget how stunning those pots looked when the tulips came up and all the colors complemented each other. 9. Plant winter vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, garlic, onions and peas. Divide artichokes and replant to give them a fresh start. You can plant no-dig potatoes by putting your potato sets out on a well-composted bed. Pile up leaves over them and put straw over the pile. The potatoes will grow up through the thick mulch and the tubers will send roots down into the soil. When it comes time to harvest, you just clear off the mulch and your potatoes are ready to pick up. 10. I have been often asked what the heck to do with those huge seed zucchini that seem to hide until they are too big to slice up for a stir fry. Here are a couple of ideas. Cut the zucchini in half lengthwise and scoop out the seedfilled middle. Sauté up some kasha or wild rice with onion, carrots, Swiss chard and other vegetables you might have around. Stuff the hollowed out zucchini with this mixture and put it back together with some toothpicks. Bake it in the oven until done and serve it as a harvest tradition. The second method is to hollow it out as above, fill both halves with soil and plant flowers in them. Good gardening. More REALTORS® Turn to Advanced Technology to Assist Clients The 2011 National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) Member Profile reveals technological advances have revolutionized the ways in which REALTORS® communicate with their clients and market themselves and their services. According to the annual survey, 72 percent of REALTORS® surveyed now use smartphones with Internet capability, an increase from the 56 percent reported in 2009. More REALTORS® are also using GPS devices, instant messaging, RSS feeds, podcasts and digital cameras, while 62 percent have a website. “The latest advances have facilitated our business and enabled us to serve our clients in a most efficient way,” said Gene Lentz, president of the Silicon Valley Association of REALTORS® (SILVAR). This summer SILVAR REALTOR® members replaced their old lockboxes with new key and Bluetooth iBoxes. They also have the option to use an eKey service with their smartphone. “I personally see this as the next step in new technology that continues to benefit our business and enable us to serve our clients better,” commented Lentz, a REALTOR® with RE/MAX Distinctive Properties in Menlo Park. Almost half of those surveyed now use social media, compared with 35 percent last year. Social networking sites such
as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter are most popular. Social networking appears to be more widespread among younger REALTORS®, with more than eight out of 10 REALTORS® ages 29 or younger using such sites. One in 10 members reported having a real estate blog. Similar to the use of social media networking sites, REALTORS® younger than 39 years of age are more likely to have a blog than those who are older. Still, six percent of REALTORS® over 60 also reported having a blog. The typical NAR member is 56 years old and works 40 hours per week; 57 percent are women, who account for 50 percent of brokers and 63 percent of sales agents. Three percent of all REALTORS® are under 30 years of age; another 4 percent are 30 to 34 years old; and 22 percent are 65 or over. The 2011 NAR Member Profile is based on a survey of 54,758 members which generated 8,303 usable responses, representing an adjusted response rate of 15.3 percent. The study’s results are representative of NAR’s 1.1 million members, who account for more than half of the approximately two million active real estate licensees in the country. INFORMATION

erched atop three tranquil oak studded acres is this custom-built steel, glass and copper home. The property presents architecture as art and represents Frank Israel’s and Frank Lloyd Wright’s organic architecture style – one that evolves naturally from the relationship between the site and the home. Beautiful natural materials flow congruently, creating a tranquil and relaxing environment that connects seamlessly with the exterior landscape and views. Walls of glass bring in a balance of light and soft shadows from the cascading oaks, while rising, angular ceilings and clerestory windows bathe the home in ambient light. The 4 bedroom 3.5 bath split-level floor plan is arranged with several public spaces, including living room with a dramatic open fireplace, family area, glass-walled dining area and kitchen that enjoy views of the oak-studded grounds and distant hills. Each room is defined by a floating piece of architecture that separates it visually from the adjoining space, yet allows an open visual flow throughout, letting the architecture become the default artwork for the home.
