C
ollege Terrace has long been known as a place that’s good for young families, including those of grad students at nearby Stanford. It’s near a public elementary school and several child care centers and parks. Dog-walkers and strollers are common sights on the streets lined with houses of all styles and sizes. Lorenz Redlefesen has lived in College Terrace since 2005 and is still struck by the quiet. “When we moved in, one of the first things we noticed was how quiet it is — compared to our old place on University Avenue. I distinctly remember noticing the birds chirping on our first morning.” His family especially loves the walkability: The kids’ school, Escondido Elementary school, is a 10minute walk. They also walk to restaurants, grocery stores, the dry cleaners, post office, bike store, two Starbucks and the California Avenue Farmers Market. “Every Sunday morning, we take the kids to pick out their favorite fruits, veggies and goodies.”

Home & Real Estate “It is nice to have our quieter street back again, but I do miss some of the fuss and bother of our former neighbor.” Over the years Schmitt has seen a lot of changes in the neighborhood unrelated to local industry. The kids are growing up and so the number of young families out and about has gone down, she said. Post-graduate students at Stanford move in with their families and often participate in neighborhood activities, even if they’ll only live there for a few years, and that adds some nice diversity, she says. But there’s still a core of active neighbors who have formed two book groups and a sewing club. They’ve started an online neighborhood via the website nextdoor.com.
It’s a custom site only accessible by people who live in the neighborhood and provides a forum for advice on local professionals and exchange or loan of items like garden supplies. If someone can’t find their cat, they post to nextdoor.com. There’s also a “Green Team,” of which Schmitt is a member. They use the website to post tips about energy savings and green living. Some residents were unhappy when that quiet Redlefsen loves faded a few years ago; they were glad when the quiet reappeared in January with the departure of a very famous neighbor. This meant no more trucks delivering to the cafeteria at 5 a.m. or shuttle buses
bringing employees the rest of the day, said Anne Schmitt, who’s lived there since 1987. “They’re gone and we love it,” she said. Not everyone was totally unhappy with Facebook. A resident since 1986, Robyn Duby, enjoyed some of the activity the company brought to the area. “It was mostly fun to see the young professionals pour in throughout the day,” she said.
“My favorite sighting was of a handsome, professionally dressed man in his late 20s/early 30s rolling casually by on a longboard with his upscale computer satchel slung over his back. There were multiple visits from media, which spiced up the morning when I was out walking my dog, and of course how incredible it was when President Obama and his motorcade paraded down our humble neighborhood streets!

T
he designer showcase season is approaching. I have m ixed feelings whenever I go on one of these tours. As I traipse through each stunningly appointed room, feelings of inspiration and awe mingle with those of irritation and incredulity. First, the inspiration ... Ideas you can use in your own home — The transformation by designers, contractors and suppliers is amazing. Visitors admire and critique the creative efforts while providing thousands for worthy causes. The $30 you spend is worth it if you come away with at least one idea or the name of a product or service provider you can use. I always take a sketch pad on my visits to capture creative ideas I can use in my own home (photography is usually not permitted). I look for clever, inexpensive and easyto-implement ideas. Some of my favorites from the past: s )N THE BATH A :EN LIKE ARRANGEMENT OF river pebbles placed on the top of the commode and vanity s )N THE BEDROOM A SIMPLE WINDOW treatment employing a thick bamboo pole as a curtain rod and yards of cheesecloth wrapped and draped around it as a soft valance s )N THE ENTRY A HUGE BUSHY FLOWER ARrangement in a large, clear glass vase filled with fresh lemons, a few with green leaves still attached. The lemons anchor the flower stems and add a blast of yellow. s )N A HALLWAY A ROW OF EQUAL SIZED COLor photographs, all matted and framed in white. My eye went to the beauty of each image, rather than to the frame, and their regularity gave the hall a peaceful, gallerylike look. Let me tell you about irritating ... I love touring a showcased home, but there are a few things I find, well, ummm, irritating: on 3/15/12; previous sale 9/08, $840,000 1555 Oxford St. Obg Trust to E. & K. FORECLOSURES Foreclosures are provided by California REsource, a real estate information company that obtains the information from the County Recorder’s Office. The date is the recorded date of the deed when the lender took title to the property. The price is what the lender paid for it (usually the mortgage balance plus foreclosure fees). Each property is now owned by the lender and is for sale, or will be for sale soon, individually or through public auction. Individuals should contact a Realtor for further information.

s !N AVERAGE HOME IS RARELY SHOWcased: It’s usually a huge estate in a ritzy neighborhood. Ninety-eight percent of us couldn’t afford to buy such a home, much less furnish it. How about a tour of threebedroom, two-bath homes, fully furnished and decorated for $10,000 or less? I think people would stampede to see frugally, yet creatively decorated ordinary homes. s -OST OF THE LIVING ROOMS ARE FILLED WITH over-scaled furnishings, upholstered in white. The people who live in these homes must not have children or a dog. Some of the couches are so big, they wouldn’t fit into my living room with a shoe horn. Most end tables and coffee tables are so crowded with delicate-looking knick-knacks that there’s no place to put a coffee cup. s 4HE WINDOW TREATMENTS THE WINDOW treatments! Big, voluminous, fancy-dancy. Scarlet O’Hara would love to make a dress out of some of these window treatments. s ) THINK ) D GET BAD DREAMS IF ) HAD TO live in a room with all four walls and the ceiling painted bright red, or dark pink, or orange yellow. s 3OME OF THE EXOTIC FLOWER ARRANGEMENTS are so large they require a room of their own. My estimate of the cost of one particularly stunning display was $250. s ) WISH ) HAD A WHOLE ROOM SET aside to use as a closet. Wouldn’t it be nice? You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 800280-2832 for information regarding the trustee's sale or visit this Internet Web site http://www.qualityloan.com , using the file number assigned to this case CA-11-487376-AB . Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site.
The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the property address or other common designation, if any, shown herein. If no street address or other common designation is shown, directions to the location of the property may be obtained by sending a written request to the beneficiary within 10 days of the date of first publication of this Notice of Sale. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee, and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. DEMMON, also known as ROY DEMMON. A Petition for Probate has been filed by: ANNINA DEMMON and LINDA WALSH in the Superior Court of California, County of SANTA CLARA. The Petition for Probate requests that: ANNINA DEMMON and LINDA WALSH be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent. The petition requests the decedent’s will and codicils, if any, be admitted to probate. The will and any codicils are available for examination in the file kept by the court. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A HEARING on the petition will be held on May 9, 2012 at 9:00 a.m. in Dept.: 3 of the Superior Court of California, County of Santa Clara, located at 191 N. First St., San Jose, CA, 95113. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code.
