Mountain Camp Woodside day campers try to get a ďŹ re going to roast marshmallows after learning how to start a campďŹ re during the “outdoor survivalâ€? group activity in July 2013.
No child left behind Summer-camp options abound for youth by Tre’vell Anderson
F
ebruary is no longer just a month for love and African-American history. In Palo Alto and nearby, it is high time for parents to begin shopping around for summer-camp activities. “It’s a crazy phenomenon, Lacee Kortsen, community services manager for the Lucie Stern Community Center, said of parents planning so early for their children’s summers. “Busy parents have wanted to start planning earlier and earlier. The earlier they can plan and get this solidified makes them feel a little more at peace. Kortsen helps to oversee the camp offerings coordinated by the City of Palo Alto. One of the most popular camps is the Foothills Day Camp, which focuses on outdoor activities. The camp, offered in two-week sessions beginning in June, allows campers to spend the second Thursday of each session sleeping under starry skies at Towle Camp, the Foothills Park campground. Night activities include campfire storytelling and a night hike. Kortsen said the Foothills Day Camps and the Communications Academy — a summer program that helps kids with public communication, debate and math skills — both fill up within the first hour of registration. The city also offers camps for youth interested in science, per-
forming arts and sports like soccer and basketball. The “big variety, Kortsen said, allows the city “to offer something for everybody. In Kortsen’s 15 years working in this field, she said she has noticed common questions arise in the quest for the best summer camp. They include inquiries about the camperto-staff ratio, level of training possessed by the staff and overall safety at camp. Though there is also an obvious focus on what activities youth will participate in, Glen Tripp, founder and CEO of Palo Alto-based Galileo Camps, said he implores parents to take their inquiries a step further. “What is the culture, the values of the place and people working there? he said he encourages parents to ask. “Picking a summer camp is more than picking an activity. There is a cumulative effect over many weeks of a program. It’s the same way you would choose a school based off the type of person they will help your child be. Tripp said he founded Galileo Camps to encourage creativity within youth. Drawing on thinking from the Institute of Design at Stanford University, he said, the camps aim to “empower kids to be innovators

Considering the bountiful options available in Palo Alto — which Tripp asserts “probably has the greatest number and greatest variety of summer programs anywhere in the United States” — choosing the right set of camps can be a science
for parents. For those parents unsure of what camps may be the best fit for their children, the City of Palo Alto has created a free Camp Concierge program to assist parents in making the best decision. By filling out an online form, parents can schedule a free consultation to help them gather more information. The City of Palo Alto’s camp registration will open for Palo Alto residents on Feb. 14. hopes of encouraging an improvement in individual outcomes. This approach forced many schools to reduce school time devoted to more creative outlets such as art, music and language. “Life experience had told me it was important,” Tripp said of the need for harnessing youth’s creativity. “Innovation mattered and creativity mattered, and it would be valuable to create a space where both of those could flourish.” In addition to the City of Palo Alto camps and Galileo, local or-

and creators.” Camp Galileo for pre-K to fifthgraders and Galileo Summer Quest for fifth- to eighth-graders are held in Palo Alto, June 9 through Aug. 1, at Walter Hays Elementary and Palo Alto High School, respectively. Camp Galileo’s themes this summer are: “Adventures Down Under,” where youth delve into the art and science of Australia, New Zealand and Papua, New Guinea; “Galileo Road Trip,” focused on art and engineering along Route 66, one of the original highways within the U.S. highway system; “The Incredible Human Body,” during which youth will learn the art and science of being human; and “Leonardo’s Apprentice,” which will focus on Renaissance inventions and art. Summer Quest campers choose among 18 different activities, from go-kart building to culinary arts. Tripp, a Stanford graduate, said the passage of the No Child Left Behind Act in 2001 prompted him to develop his organization. No Child Left Behind advocated for a standards-based approach to education where high expectations and measurable goals were set in
