here the emphasis is on original fine art and fine crafts, the Palo Alto Chamber of Commerce will host this year’s thirty-third annual Palo Alto Festival of the Arts. This festival will showcase the work of 300 artisans, many who will travel from around the country. This unique display of talent and creativity will fill University Avenue, August 23 & 24 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. This venue of original works of art offers a variety of displays from abstract paintings to those of extreme realism; from elegant sculptures in bronze to up-cycled whimsical metal creations; one-of-a-kind functional and decorative ceramic pieces, unique mixed-media wall hangings, macro photographic images and a stunning array of exceptional jewelry hand-crafted by extraordinary artists. A “must see” this year will be the works of first-time exhibitor, Fredrick Prescott. His animal menagerie of bigger-than-life stainless steel kinetic works of art can be seen at Sculpture Plaza, corner of University and Cowper. Returning for its’ twelfth year and always a crowdpleaser, the Italian Street Painting Expo, located on Tasso Street and presented by the Palo Alto Weekly will feature over 60 visual artists creating their
temporary chalk masterpieces on asphalt canvases ranging in sizes up to twelve-foot squares. Come both days to enjoy the magic of these paintings coming to life before being washed away after the festival closes Sunday night. And for kids, Palo Alto’s Youth Community Service, the beneficiary of the Italian Street Painting Expo, will offer budding young artists a chance to create their own chalk paintings in two-foot squares. Also plan to stop by the ever-popular Kids’ Art Studio on Kipling. Palo Alto Parents & Professionals for Art will offer free art activities and provide experienced art instructors to teach young artists how to create treasured works of art of their own. And no “day at the festival” is complete without sampling a variety of gourmet food paired with refreshing fine wines or microbrews while listening to toe-tappin’ acoustical music at the Webster Stage or enjoying the original tunes being played on the Waverley Stage. Come and enjoy the Palo Alto Festival of the Arts, University Ave., August 23 & 24, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission and parking are free. For public transit information: www.511.org. Palo Alto Chamber of Commerce welcomes you to the festival
“T
his is our largest fundraising event of the year and it also helps promote economic development and growth of business in Palo Alto,” says David MacKenzie, CEO/President of the Palo Alto Chamber of Commerce. “The Palo Alto Festival of the Arts is a very popular event featuring curated artists, some
whose work can only be found at this Festival, along with entertainers, street performers, great food, micro-brews and fine wines. All who attend love the Italian Street Painters, a component which we introduced 12 years ago, and the children really enjoy the Kid’s Chalk-aLot. Palo Alto’s businesses reap the benefits of the influx of new or returning customers and everyone has a good time!”

A colorful collaboration between two artists
A
special harmony takes place when you combine colorful paintings with the “quiet oboes”. This delightful combination of contemporary oil paintings and fiber-wrapped cylinders compliment both Liz Cummings and Myra Burg’s works resulting in one very cohesive art form. Liz Cummings is well-known for her realistic-style oil paintings. “You feel as if you can “walk into” the painting”, says Cummings. Now, she and Myra Burg have created their “collaborative series” of work which combines both Cummings paintings and Burg’s cylindrical tapestries, better known as the “quiet oboes”, according to Burg. Burg has been designing her art since 1976. Her works range in sizes from tabletop to airplane-hangar size for freestanding, wall-mounted or aerial constructions. Soft luxurious fibers are combined with the metal cylinders to create an elegant display of color & texture. Cummings creative process began in high
school and has continued to grow to date. Both southern California artists have a background in architecture which may explain their use of space, color and balance when designing one of their pieces. These stylish and eye-catching wall hangings are a pleasant addition to any room. “Liz and I were both born thinking in three dimensions”, says Burg. A relationship which started twenty years ago has become an exciting challenge to both artists when collaborating on an installation. “Many levels of iterations are required from color to size to concept whereby the process and the beginning are one, yet varied”, Burg states. Make sure to stop by their booth and see what these artists have designed with their endless possibilities of 2 and 3 dimensional work. Their work can be viewed at www.lizcummings.com and www. myraburg.com.
Creating on the road
T
his native California artist from Fort Bragg, Ken Newman now calls Cambridge, Idaho home. However, at least nine months of the year is spent putting 30,000 miles on the odometer, sculpting as he goes. As an accomplished carver and modeler, working in wood, bronze and mixed media in both wildlife and figurative genres, “representational sculptures are not a choice, but a natural extension of my vision”, says the artist. Newman thoughtfully captures the essence of each piece from conversations shared, journeys made or life lessons learned. Each piece has much meaning as the titles suggest—”The Last Whistle” and “Taking Attendance”: one paying tribute to an individual who makes hard work look effortless; and the other capturing the moment, Newman’s beloved dog, while walking in front of him, pauses and looks back for his “best friend”. As Newman says, “there are no political agendas, just stories of reflection on one’s influences and journeys. My pieces are a show of respect for the 6 X Palo Alto Festival of the Arts X 2014
simple and subtle rhythms and elements in life as they are in nature”. To learn more about Ken Newman or follow him while sculpting on the road visit: www. kennewmansculptures.com.

Silk-thread mosaics—a work of love
C
omposed with silk as smooth as the music of John Coltrane and with an explosive vivacity of colors that brings to mind the frenzied syncopation of New Orleansstyle jazz, Prince DuncanWilliams’ silk mosaics succeed in creating something of a miracle: jazz without sound. Born in Ghana in West Africa to a family tradition working with silk thread art nearly four decades in the making, Duncan-Williams moved to the United States in 1982 to continue his studies in architectural drafting. By 1996, Prince had drifted away from architectural drafting and began his own training in silk mosaics—integrating the intensive silk mosaic art with his lifelong sketches. Now living in Las Vega, Nevada, Duncan-Williams has developed and perfected this art form to create breathtaking large scale masterpieces ranging in style from the abstract to the whimsical.
“I love seeing viewers smile when they connect with the vitality of my silk mosaic art.”, says DuncanWilliams. “My mosaics are known for their strong and unique use of color—something that has energized and intrigued me for as long as I can remember.” To see what this self-taught artist has accomplished throughout his colorful journey, visit: www. princeduncanwilliams.com.

n August 23 & 24, the Sculpture Plaza at University and Cowper will be taken over by brightly colored, larger-than-life, steel kinetic animal sculptures. These magnificent multidimensional art forms on moving steel are a sight to behold. Sculptor, Fredrick Prescott will be returning to his roots. This former Palo Altan began working with metal at the age of six. His childhood experiences have evolved to what is now his innovative artistic style that centers on kinetic scenarios and landscapes.
hours on his work. Prescott attributes his appeal to the “primitive need people have to laugh and have fun.” Come enjoy the world of imagination by Fredrick Prescott at this year’s Palo Alto Festival of the Arts and be sure to bring your cameras and your minivan if you wish to take home your own larger-than-lifesized pet. More examples of his work can also be seen at prescottstudio.com.
“The joy and animation in my sculptures simultaneously evoke the natural world and its imaginary counterpart. My work is seen as a blend of folk art, pop art, and technically advanced construction, says Prescott.” Now residing in Santa Fe, New Mexico, he is inspired by everything around him and spends countless 2014 X Palo Alto Festival of the Arts X 9

Imagination is the key Barbara Glynn Prodaniuk saw her first potter at work during a grade school field trip. She promised herself that someday she would find a way to try it—ten years later, she kept that promise. Her love affair with clay really began at Moorpark College, where she worked as a ceramics lab assistant. She opened her first studio at Donner Lake in 1981 and in 1989 moved to Truckee where she currently lives and works.

According to Prodaniuk, her imagination is what makes her work different than others; that, and her strong desire to keep exploring new ideas and techniques. “I find working with clay to be a lifetime commitment that grows more rewarding with each passing year. I
Simple elegance as wearable art Graduating from Hong Kong University and later as Assistant Curator at The National Museum of Modern Art in Seoul, Korea, Mi Jung Pienzien immigrated to the United States where she now resides in Berkeley. Her work depicts a contemporary style with minor embellishments so the beauty of the piece alone can shine through. Her passion for jewelry-making blends sculptural and organic forms into works of art. Her regular customers comment that the simplicity of her pieces evokes an elegance in sophistication and design. “The process of creation, from conception to completion, is intimate and meditative”, says Pienzien. I aim
for simplicity and visualize my jewelry as wearable art. I like to create pieces that are not defined by tradition or boundaries, but to free our minds and connect our hearts.” This unique jewelry display of creativity can be seen when visiting Pienzien during this weekend’s Palo Alto Festival of the Arts. Italian street painting: Art in action at the ground level
A
rtists take to the streets at the Palo Alto Festival of the Arts, as the Italian Street Painting Expo returns to delight and amaze festival visitors for the 12th year. Presented by the Palo Alto Weekly, this popular event features more than 60 artists from throughout California, creating works of art in chalk on the pavement also known as Tasso Street. Participants begin sketching early Saturday morning and complete their pieces at 6 p.m. on Sunday. Festival-goers gather all weekend to watch this fascinating live-art demonstration. Street painting’s long and rich history originated in 16th-century Italy. It soon spread across Europe and by 1890, some 500 Londoners were full-time pavement artists.
The festival’s chalk-paintings range in size from 4-by-6 feet to 12-by-12 feet, with subjects varying from familiar classical masterpieces and dazzling 3D art to original abstract designs. Past street paintings have included high-tech subjects, Botticelli angels and Maurice Sendak illustrations. Sponsorship sales of the spaces benefit Youth Community Service. Proceeds raised from this fundraising effort help to bring awareness to programs such as leadership opportunities for young people and service-learning projects throughout the Bay Area. A kids’ chalk-a-lot area also gives children under the age of 12 the chance to participate in the street-painting event by creating their own 2-by-2foot artwork for a minimal fee.
