Maintaining tranquility
oshi Aoki is a self-taught mixed media artist from Seaside, Oregon who creates sculptural designs incorporating various materials into abstract organic shapes. “I really like the way you can define threedimensional spaces with wire lines and the way you can create any form in organic shapes with metal. The main motivation of my art is to capture the essence of nature in abstract ways. Using various types of metal and mixed media objects, I try to incorporate the balance between the movement and stillness, and the simplicity and complexity of the core forms that I find inherent in nature. I try to accentuate the equilibrium between two opposite materials by shaping chaotic hardwood burls into clean round pieces, and at the same time giving metal an organic Yoshi Aoki feel. The overall effect that I wish to achieve is the sense of the calmness of nature that comes Visit www.yoshiaoki.com to view Aoki’s unique body from this balance,” says Aoki. of work.
The Journey
A
dolfo Girala was born in Havana, Cuba and later moved to the United States. As a self-taught artist, he enjoyed experimenting with various materials and became a full-time artist in 1994. “Becoming an artist has been a long, slow and challenging process. I never read an art book and I never attended art classes. Instead, it flowed from my great desire to express myself. The blank canvas was simply going to be the avenue of my expression. My inspiration comes from the pure desire to create,” says Girala. The use of dry pigments, acrylic paint, modeling pastes and gel mediums achieve a texture and finish that give the illusion of being painted on ceramic or wood.
Adolfo Girala
“My art work is a representation of beauty, tranquility, and mystery,” says Girala.

T
he Italian Street Painting Expo, presented by the Palo Alto Weekly will celebrate its 16th year featuring more than 60 artists along Tasso between University and Lytton Avenues. These artists will showcase their chalk paintings on asphalt canvases. Ever Galvez, resident of Fullerton, CA will be traveling to the Palo Alto Festival of the Arts to create a 13ft. by 13ft. chalk painting for the Italian Street Painting Expo. Galvez, a recent newlywed, is an award-winning chalk artist and known for his vibrant colors and vivid works both nationally and internationally. As a fine art artist, he’s been classically trained in painting, drawing, sculpture and traditional animation. “The true colors of an object is the interpretation of our own experiences in life. My surroundings made me achieve those experiences through the years. Through art, I can capture a moment in time and transform and express it for everyone to see,” says Galvez. Visit www.evergalvez.com to view his work. Almost eighty percent of this year’s participating artists live in cities two-eight hours away. Many come from either Northern or Southern California; while some are from Tampa, Florida, Montreal, Canada, Tempe, Arizona, Anchorage, Alaska, as well as San Jose, Santa Clara and Palo Alto.

Art that lends elegance and shine to your décor
F
or Kevin Lubbers, inspiration comes from places he's fallen in love with all over the world. Each piece of glass art is a reflection of where he longs to be in a world and intended to provide the viewer a momentary escape from reality. Lubbers strives to incorporate the rare diamonds he sees in nature, hoping the world will stop and take notice. “In essence art should rejuvenate the soul. It should uplift the heart and bring peace to the mind. This world is a beautiful place and my goal to bring to light the utopias I find most precious for the enjoyment of others”, says Lubbers. At his home in Oceana, Illinois, he creates each work of art himself using warm glass in all its forms, from sheet glass to frit. He frames his glass with either metal or exotic wood frames.

Transforming an image
C
andace Mahler’s journey began many years ago. While taking fine art photography classes at the Academy of Art in San Francisco a final project required a larger printer than what she had. To compensate for this, she cut the paper up to disguise the fact it needed to be printed in sections on a smaller printer. This was the beginning which led to her work today. Candace Mahler
Each piece is hand cut and individually crafted with an array of vibrant eye-catching colors displayed in an artistic abstract arrangement. “At this time, I am printing on copper sheet, cutting up the images and reattaching them to a metal base covered with a plexi frame. I will expand
on the theme I am now working with and take it somewhere else. Either way my path is one of experimentation and change and I always look forward to the next thing”, says Mahler. Visit www.candacemahler.com to view her work. 2017 X Palo Alto Festival of the Arts X 21
