01 Master’s Thesis

A Loom in the Manzana Suiça: proposal of InterAction in a pombaline building Located in the heart of Lisbon, the Manzana Suiça is one more example of a property in a state of abandonment in the city. In contrast to the private uses resulting from Lisbon’s speculative opportunity, the project is conceived as public place of social interaction, an extension of the squares between which it is located. A place in which an exchange takes place between the artisan, who creates, collects and teaches, and the citizen, who wanders around the place, learns, contemplates and consumes. The proposal preserves the precious pombaline antisisimic wooden structure, and adds a new light and translucent envelope that interacts with the preexistence, made up of several textile layers. For the development of the intervention, in the first place, the pre-existing structure is adapted and reinforced, in order to achieve the necessary gaps for the new spatiality. Regarding the new envelope, when building with membranes it is necessary to incorporate several layers due to their thickness. This will generate a great spatial richness with different environments inside. The textile pieces are produced by means of a craft-technology-industry collaboration: artisantechnological design / industrial production. For the design, the principles of tensile structures are taken into account, generating anticlastic shapes and correctly tensioning the pieces thanks to the pattern, thanks to the knowledge transferred from the artisanal savoir faire.

02 Anupama Kundoo Architects

“Taking time - Anupama Kundoo at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art “The fourth monographic exhibition of a series called: The Architect’s Studio, Anupama Kundoo – Taking Time showcases the process of the studio in acknowledgement of the value of time, cooperation and collaboration. As Kundoo says “Time is the most essential resource that we have access to as living beings. What else do we have that is truly ours, except our own time? The work of our lifetime occurs as part of a large collective action in time and in space; we build knowledge collectively. The first section of the exhibition, THE ARCHITECTURE OF TIME, gives the visitor access to her research archives, which include her first sources of inspiration, processed materials and architectural works. Under the categories Life, Mind and Matter, we see Kundoo’s investigations into the nature of materials, the tectonics of the earliest living beings, and mankind’s ways of processing the material, which she calls “the thinking hand”.The collection of processed materials and tools falls into three categories: Stone and Wood, Earth, and Ferrocement and Concrete, each illustrated by a number of 1:50 models, all of which are crafted in a reduced scale, in the original materials. On the balcony between the two large rooms of the exhibition is a 1:1 construction of a single residential cell that forms the basis of her Auroville co-housing project. The unit is an extension of her previous Full Fill Home prototype. Kundoo’s work stands on three “legs”: her own practice, research and teaching. Her research-oriented practice and practice-oriented teaching are embraced in the second main theme of the exhibition, CO-CREATION. Here we see her concepts for a large urban development Line of Goodwill, for the city of Auroville. It is a prototype for high-density co-housing that rethinks urban habitat in the context of non-ownership of land. Radical social innovations become possible through the creation of human-scale communities, including circular systems and the sharing of resources. A model (1:50) of the entire 240,000m2 housing project is shown in the exhibition, and part of the facade is built in 1:1as an example of Kundoo’s development of intelligent facades.“ - Kjeld Kjeldsen, Mette Marie Kallehauge

03 Bachelor’s Thesis + Proffesional Research

AUROVILLE (1970-2020). Planning, construction and re-activation of a lab-city. This research aims to make a constructive criticism on the study-case of the city of Auroville. It is a city created from scratch in the late 1960s in southeastern India based on the vision of a new society of Mirra Alfasa and Sri Aurobindo. The investigation begins with a field trip during the months of July and August of 2019 due to an internship at Anupama Kundoo’s Studio in Auroville, and continues during 2020 because of the development of the Bachelor’s Thesis. Firstly, an investigation of Roger Anger’s archive (the chief Architect) is carried out and the most important and interesting drawings are selected. Afterwards, the written work is developed with the help of Luis Palacios. The written work is structured in a 4x4 matrix (four chapters with four sub-chapters) where the phases followed for the development of the research are described. These are: Introduction to the subject, Description of its planning process, Analysis of the construction process and Critique of the current situation. The conclusions reached are intended to be the basis for new lines of work for the reactivation of Auroville. It is considered a matter of great interest since it is an experimental project that can serve as a laboratory of ideas and a learning niche, in areas such as the sustainable use of materials, the integration of the ruralization of the city in a holistic way with the urbanization, the reinvention of mobility or the study of collective housing. Provided that a critical stance on the subject is carried out, since it is ultimately a utopian project.

04 Academic Projects - Garden Hamlet - Popurrí - My Green HotSpot Reykjavik - Wooden Houses - Look-Out Tower Geysir

A garden hamlet The context in which the project is developed is “La España Vacía”, which refers to an area of Spain where the number of inhabitants of the villages is getting smaller and they are getting older, so the number of abandoned villages is increasing. This phenomenon generates a situation that will be used as a starting-point image: when nature takes over. The project aims to carry out a colonization of a built, inhabited and later abandoned space that has already been colonized by vegetation, in order to develop a habitable place in which the main protagonist is the colonizing vegetation. After a study of the area the ideal place for the garden hamlet to be developed is found: a village in ruins in Soria called Villaseca Baja. The project covers three basic subjects: construction options, solved with basic wooden structures that merge with the preexisting constructions; layout, differentiating main roads and minor paths; and the garden development, consisting in a “jardin en mouvement” with its dinamism and spontaneity, along with the appropriate use of species of trees and shrubs strategically for each space according to the characteristics that these contribute to the atmosphere of the place.

Popurrí This project was developed in a group of two people. It is located in the north of Italy, in the Emilia Romagna region. It is an intervention in the Villa Rivalta, an old complex of palace and gardens inspired by the style of Versailles built in the 18th century and currently in state of abandonment. The intervention consists of a reconstruction of what was the main wing of the palace through a composition of parallelepipeds of different dimensions that form a set of gaps and builds. These spaces are intended for various uses inspired by the activities that were carried out in this part of the palace, but taking into account that today the users are different and our lifestyle as well. As the name suggests, the idea of the project is born with the aim of achieving convergence between what was once the great Palazzo Ducale di Rivalta and what is now this great space of social confluence and collective use. This large space serves the surrounding people as a leisure space to meet, play sports, stroll and relax. It is intended to provide a conditioned space so that the social activities can take place, but making known and valuing the historical aspects out of this place. The result are spaces like a Archive-Cooworking or a Mirror RoomDiscotheque. For the baste area of the ancient garden, a simple occupation of space is carried out through a forest that changes its density and a modification of the ground level.

MyGreenHotSpot Reykjavik

In an urban context, in the centre of the Icelandic capital, the aim of the project is to provide to the inhabitants of Reykjavik a place where to carry out one of the most common activities of their daily life, spending time in public terms. A place to socialize, excercise and relax. The main space takes it’s form from a big swimming pool, concieved as a natural and organic water shape , made of smaller pools of various dimensions depending on the amount of people each pool is designed to accommodate It is a conditioned space by means of a false ceiling and false envelope made of vegetation, which helps to smooth, purify and contribute aroma to the vaporous enviroment; and a system of openable polycarbonate roof and façades, which allows the opportunity of remaining closed, opened or semi-opened. The problem of structure is solved by a series of pillars, that descent from certain swimming pools and hold them through a radial structure system. As a consequence, in the ground floor appears another vast useful space which is exploited to host the secondary but necessary spaces required by the program, such as bathrooms or changing rooms, and a café-restaurant.

WoodenHouses The value of this project resides on the whole process of the semester, developing the skills of abstraction and a lot of sensibility when it comes to project. We were asked to draw and design everything by freehand and the use of models and gadgets. We were proposed to come up with a strategy to colonise a plot located in Madrid’s suburbs, although without focusing in this certain site, but from the design of a mobile and a bottleholder that we had to construct ourselves. The proposal for the landplan is a series of geometrical designed paths that cross transversally the long and narrow rectangular plot, 200m x 1,2 km, taken from the steel-wired mobile’s design. On the other hand, the proposal for the dwellings is a unique and long row that crosses the plot longitudinally formed by succession of one-room dwellings. The shape and structure were obtained from the design of the bottle-holder, consisting on polygon-shaped pieces each reclining on the adjacent piece as if they were sliding on each other. The inside of the dwellings is organised as an open space, with the option of enclosing a cooking/dining area with the use of a sliding door. On top of it, it’s located the personal space for resting and sleeping. All of the interior is illuminated by a toplit.

Look-Out Tower Model for a two-week project proposal in Geysir, Iceland. Around the geysers, hotspots and fumaroles that characterize this place are distributed several towers whose main objective is to gain height in order to get spectacular views of the surrounding landscape, besides offering a different experience of the geysers.

Paper Canopy Model for a canopy design in Madrid The canopy is designed after a light filter, which sifts the light by means of a thin layer that imitates parchment paper. A thin double-layered wooden structure is introduce to support the skin.
