New Staff Member at School Library System Meet Kate Lalier, the newest member to join the SW BOCES School Library System team. Kate comes from Brooklyn, where she was a teacher at a public elementary school. After teaching for a number of years, she earned an LMS degree and became the school library media specialist. She was fortunate to have the experience of working in a new, state-ofthe-art Robin Hood library.
Recently Kate and her family relocated to the Westchester area so that she could pursue a new opportunity in the library field. She is very excited to now work for the SW BOCES SLS group. There are new
projects and challenges to get underway. Kate is looking forward to meeting all of you and working together throughout the school year.
For questions regarding video streaming, e-books, or listserv inquiries contact Kate at klalier@swboces.org

Inquiring Minds Want to Know: Infusing Literacy Skills into the Inquiry Process Inquiry and literacy – are they one and the same or complementary processes? In this course, participants will explore different inquiry models and how literacy can be instilled throughout. Design for Understanding Meets the 21st-Century School Librarian The course is designed to introduce participants to the Understanding by Design Curriculum framework. Known as the Backward Design model, this framework is unique in that it begins with the end in mind. Rather than planning from an activity-centered focus, the teacher-librarian first identifies the Big Ideas behind content standards. Fee for each course:
$99 for AASL members $149 for ALA members $225 for non-members $99 for retired AASL members $75 for student AASL members
A "Certificate of Completion" listing 16 clock hours will be given to those who complete the course.
