Learn to Foster Sustainable Communities Through Community Development Program Responding to continued development in Toronto and its surrounding areas, community development program at Centennial College - Community Development Work - is preparing students for the field in two years. According to Service Canada, "since the community network [in the country] is now well established, higher government spending in the health and social services sector should be more conducive to the hiring of members of other occupations and the number of income security claimants should continue, the number of community and social service workers is expected to grow sharply over the next few years..." Careers in government, voluntary organizations, corporations, and international community settings are common for professionals in community development work. As an interdisciplinary field that incorporates politics, economics, research and an understanding of cultural diversity, community development is a form of social planning that strives to enhance the social and economic well-being of people living in various communities. The Centennial College offering reflects the unique nature of the community development industry by offering students courses in the various areas associated with the field. Among specific topics that students become familiar with are: sustainable community development, community economic development, community engagement and participation, community development in action, community development policy, and more.
While other community development programs focus on theory, Centennial College's offering provides students with the opportunity to practice their acquired knowledge under the supervision of community practitioners in two separate fieldwork settings. Opportunities also exist for international development placements and focuses on offering readers information about the Community Development Work offering at Centennial College, which covers a range of topics that include policy and economic development.
