Software Engineering Technology – Interactive Gaming (Co-op) Enhances Student Learning with Work Terms As technology continues to advance so does that need for software developers, game programmers, software testers, computer programmers, systems analysts, business analysts, web application developers, database administrators, applications or software support with training from an interactive game design program. Centennial College is meeting this need with its Software Engineering Technology – Interactive Gaming Co-op. Because it results in an advanced college diploma, the offering takes three years to complete. During this time, students learn about the various phases of the game programming life cycle: game design, three-dimensional graphics programming, game engine design, multiplayer online game programming and more. Courses are delivered using leading-edge technology geared to industry standards and emphasize object-oriented software design methodologies, user-oriented interface design, Microsoft’s .NET, DirectX, XNA, Flash, HTML5, software testing and QA, C#, Java, Java EE, Oracle, MS-SQL Server, Rational/ WebSphere, Mobile Application Development and more. The computer labs at Progress Campus, which houses this offering, are fully equipped to handle the demands of the curriculum and enhance learning. To round out each game design course on the theoretical end of the spectrum, students also complete a range of practical elements. One standout hands-on feature is two software development projects. These real-world business applications require students to use the combination of business and technician skills they learned in their courses to build higher quality software. The projects also serve as preparation for the three co-op experiences students enjoy prior to graduation. During co-op, academically qualified students enhance their education by working as paid employees in the field.
