A New Year is Almost Here It’s very hard to write the column this month. My mind cannot wrap itself around all the tragedy happening in the world anymore. And it’s not other places, it’s right here at home in Kentucky too. Over this past weekend, a local firefighter lost his life after fighting a fire in Estill County. As of now, the cause of his death hasn’t been announced, but it’s related to his firefighting efforts the night before he was found deceased by his wife. It’s almost too much to bear for local fire, police and emergency personnel. Since October, a policeman, a paramedic and now a fireman have lost their lives in the line of duty. These people are here for us when we need them. As a community we need to continue to support them in any way we can. ••••••

actions of those people in California. To go into a business - one targeted to disabled people no less and start shooting people. I don’t get it. I don’t get how any human can point a gun and another human and pull the trigger. My daddy always told me “if you point it at someone, use it.” And I guess that’s the way it’s got to be anymore.

The world has gone crazy, hasn’t it? I’ve never worried about being home alone. Dave leaves early in the morning and the thought has never crossed my mind that I might be in danger. But, that’s all changed now, hasn’t it? We cannot feel safe in our own homes, not like in the past. Heck, we never have taken our car keys out of our vehicles on the farm until just recently. You just never know anymore. All we can do is continue to pray for our country.

December brings us to Dave and I’s anniversary. Yes, 18 years we’ve been putting up with each other. And I couldn’t imagine going through this life with anyone else! Happy Anniversary to the Dave Person!

Of course, there is also the six-year old boy that lost his life in a home burglary earlier this week. Now, this, is just unimaginable. You do not put your child to bed at night with the thought that they’ll be murdered overnight. I just can fathom how his parents and siblings feel, much less the entire community of Versailles. It’s just tragic.

•••••• A new year will roll around before our January edition goes to the printers, so we just want to wish each and every one of you a very Blessed Christmas and an extra special New Year to come. It’s our pleasure

Required baking time seems to vary widely with this recipe. Sometimes it takes 50 minutes, sometimes it takes 75! Allow to cool for several hours or overnight. Serve in thin slivers.

Poetry By Bobby Joe Hedge of Olive Hill

Christmas Is Christmas is family together once more With lights in the window and a wreath on the door When kids of all sizes are laughing with glee As they sing Christmas carols while trimming the tree. The old men tell tales of the things they have done Of the battles they’ve lost and the wars they have won While the ladies bunch up in the kitchen again Baking pies cakes and cookies, and gingerbread men. When we sit at the table, hold hands and say grace Lets remember our troops in a far away place Who cannot be home to take part in this feast For they’ll spend Christmas in the war torn middle east. There’s a nursing home that is within a short ride Or some other place where some old folks reside Take time out to go there and visit a while It will do your heart good to see an old person smile. Have all of the children to gather around And tell them the story of Bethlehem town And of the wise men who followed the star all the way To see baby Jesus who was born on that day. And lets all stop and think how our lives have been blessed And share our good fortune with someone who has less Anything we can do to help someone else out And don’t ever forget what today is about.

Favorite Memories

My favorite Christmas memory is going in the woods with my grandpa to find a Christmas tree and there was a big snow on the ground. Glenna McIntosh, Beattyville My favorite Christmas memory is when all 14 of my brothers and sisters gathered together at mymom an dads and had Christmas together as a family. Thelma Johnson, Irvine I enjoyed going to the woods with Mom an Dad to find the “perfect” tree. It smelled so good and I thought it was beautiful when we finished decorating it. Love ATC - keep up the good work. Terry Williams, Irvine I remember Christmas to be a time of magic, when the tree lights were turned on and the smell of the food my mother was cooking for Christmas dinner and hoping Santa would bring the gifts I had been dreaming for. And he did! Michael Dempsey, Campton My favorite memory is going to the National Guard Armory in Jackson, Kentucky to see Santa Claus with my brothers, sisters, mom and dad at the age of 9. We each got a wrapped toy and a bag filled with fruit and candy. That was in 1961. I am now 63. Marlene (Noble) Haney, Beattyville My favorite Christmas memory was Christmas 2002. It was the last time our family was together before my dad died the next year. Christmas has never been the same since. Ottis M. Trent, Pine Ridge

My favorite Christmas memory is when I was 6 or 7 years old. Driving through thye snow to get to my Granny’s, to spend time with family and eat until we couldn’t eat no more. Deedrah Branham, Irvine My favorite Chrisstmas is all of them - knowing Tod sent his son to save us. Wen I was a kid we didn’t have much. We would get one gift, something we really needed. But we got to decorate the house and I still love that. Every year I decorate for Christmas, I love all the lights a’glitter. Karen Ritchie, Campton My favorite Christmas memory would be waking Christmas morning to the smell of cooking of no-bake cookies and the excitement of opening presents. The Christmas dinners with the whole family there and the kids enjoying opening their gifts and the excitement that is still there. Rhonda Harvey, McKee

My favorite Christmas memory was when all three of my girls were little. They would wake up Christmas morning and see all the gifts under the tree and their eyes would light up. Then we would have Christmas dinner with all of our family. We were so blessed. Now I have Christmas with four grandsons. “Still blessed.” Robin Smith, Clay City Another favorite memory of Christmas is shopping with my mom. She loved Christmas shopping! And I miss my mom. She is gone to be with the angels, they’re having Christmas in heaven. Thank you, Glenna McIntosh, Beattyville I have lots of Christmas memories as do most everyone but, I have one that sticks out in my mind. My mother has the most wonderful talent for telling stories. She has taught Sunday school for many years and her students would listen very closely as she told the Bible story for the week. When we were growing up, my brother and I would not be allowed to bother the presents under the Christmas tree and we always had to wait till Christmas morning to open the gifts. One year after we were grown she wrote this story called “The Gift” and presented it to us for Christmas. The story is too long for this contest but I am going to try my best to tell you the story as a memory of mine. Mymom was raised very poor and came from a large family. She had several older siblings that were married but, still there were several younger children at home and times were hard. She said that one of her sisters brought the children at home a small package. My mom wanted to open hers immediately but my grandmother firmly told her NO that if she opened the gift she would not have one at Christmas, but my mom being a child knew that could not be true everybody gets something for Christmas even if it is candy, nuts and fruit. But my mom would not wait to open the gift, she thought nobody would know - she would just open it, look at it and rewrap it. In the package was brand new white bobby socks - no holes, no hand-me-downs. She just had to wear them to school that day but needless to say, things did not work out. While on her way to catch the school busy she stepped in a cellpool (sewer) and had to go back home and change. And her mother met her at the door and she knew when she saw the look in her mother’s eyes, not only had she ruined her new socks, she knew she had made a sad Christmas even more sad for her mother and she also knew in her heart there would be nothing for her under the tree. My mom said the ord probably gets the same look in his eyes every time we dis-obey him. Yet He is always willing to clean us up and forgive the mess we make in our life. My mom will soon be 72 years old and I am proud to be her daughter. Sharla Plowman, Irvine Daughter of Marlene Webb My favorite memory of Christmas is going to pick out the best Christmas tree. It wasn’t always a good one but spending the time with family was wonderful. Brenda Neal, Irvine My favorite Christmas memory is waking up on Christmas morning and watching our grandkids open all their gifts. I love the looks on their little faces when they get exactly what they asked Santa for! I found the paw print in the Brown Farm Meats ad. I love to read your magazine. I have all the girls at work hooked on it also. I have to take a copy of it to work every month! You all do such a wonderful job! Becky Baker, Irvine

When my kids were young we would decorate the Christmas tree while singing Christmas carols with the radio and watching their faces when they opened their presents. And our large family getting together for dinner laughing, talking, kids playing together and thankful for another year. My kids are grown with their own families now. But it will always be a Christmas memory (my favorite). Rebecca J. Wells, Clay City

My favorite Christmas memories are of our children’s first Christmas. The excitement in their eyes was the best present of all! Corky Terry, Irvine

Favorite Memories

The most remarkable Christmas I can remembver is when I was six years old and now I am 60 years old. We all, my brother and two sisters, got to hang one ornament on the tree and string popcorn that we strung for decoration. Then we all went to bed waiting on Santa Claus. The next morning we got up, oh it was so pretty. The Christmas tree was all lit up and it had some balls and other decorations on it. Well, all of us sat down and the oldest one got to pass out the presents that were under the tree while mom and dad watched with big smiles on their faces. Then we saw a note on the tree, it had my name on it, then I had to go find three more notes. Then at last I found it. It was a brand new bicycle in a box. Dad had to put it together. That was the best thing because I was a Daddy’s Girl and I got to help. Patricia Roland, Clay City My favorite Christmas memory is with my newborn daughter in 2004. Kristina Montgomery, Stanton One of my favorite Christmas memories is watching our daughter open up presents and having fun on her first Christmas. Thank you. Woodrow W. Dixon Jr., Irvine My favorite Christmas memory is every Christmas I have had with my children. Watching their faces light up is the best feeling ever. Traci Mays, Irvine

My favorite memory of Christmas is when my husband dressed up as Santa Claus. His sister came in from Ohio to visit my mother and dad. She brought her two kids, one was six the other was four. He, my husband dressed as Santa, made a noise on the porch so the kids went to the window and got to see Santa Claus for the first time. It was funny - the four-year-old Kenton was scared to death and started shaking; Jenny, the six-year-old started saying “Oh, it’s Santa Claus.” It was pretty neat. Thank you, Jackie Kindred, Stanton My favorite Christmas memory is something we do every year, we all gather at my grandma’s house to celebrate the birth of Christ. All of my cousins who I haven’t seen in a while come in and get together. We eat, play games, socialize and celebrate. It’s just an awesome atmosphere. It is for sure my favorite time of the year. Thanks! Brittany Puckett, Irvine Meeting Santa for the first time at the Pancake Breakfast in town. John Isaacs, Irvine Cutting a fresh cedar tree on Overlook Farm.

Christmas at grandparents home with lots of family. Kelly Mayabb, Campton My favorite Christmas memory is 1996. I was home from Med. cruise deployment - Navy - and stayed up all night building Melodi a bicycle, playhouse and too many other “assembly required” toys! All completed just before she arose searching for gifts! Teresa Greer, Winchester My favorite Christmas memory is when my mom was still with us. Brittany Dickerson, Stanton My favorite Christmas memory is when my bubby came over for Christmas and Carly with her baby and I got a huge pillow worm. Piper Hall, Clay City My favorite Christmas memory is my sister and I would get up very early on Christmas morning and go see what Santa had left us under our Christmas tree. Then we would go awaken our parents and then we would open all gifts, clean up the mess and then off to our grandparents hosue we would go. It was, and still is, a great day to celebrate! Deana Rogers, Stanton Two years ago we made my 91 year old great-grandpa a money tree. He was always telling us that money didn’t grow on trees - so we made him a tree that did grow money! Brittany Reynolds, Olive Hill My favorite Christmas memory was when I was around 7 7years old and had wanted a puppy for as long as I could remember .... ( all of 7 years) .... I came home from school just before Christmas break and my dad told me he had a Christmas present for me that even though it was early I had to hunt till I found it. I looked everywhere ... till something made me look behind the couch in the living room ... and there laid my present, a white German Shepherd puppy. I gave him the name of Andy and he was without a doubt my favorite present and favorite memory. Anna Brandenburg, Beattyville My favorite Christmas memory was the last Christmas we had my Granny. Everyone she knew came Christmas Day for a meal and fellowship. It was really special to see all who cared for her. She died later in the Spring, but I never forgot it. Gail Henry, McKee My favorite Christmas memory is when I was little - we would have big family dinners and then gather around the tree on Christmas Eve and open presents. It was a very exciting time for my family. Heather Bell, Irvine My favorite Christmas memories were when we had Christmas dinners at moms house on Christmas Day. Mom would cook a lot of foods and we all would bring some in. There were eight of us and we would all come back to the farm. Jean Barnett, Stanton

I won a trip to Nashville, Tennessee with G&M Tours right after I was diagnosed with breast cancer. My mom and I had a great time at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel. This was a great vacation after my breast surgery and I’m successfully cured of my breast cancer. Judy Hibbs, Stanton My favorite Christmas memory would be the year I got my John Deere boots. I had wanted them all yer long and then come home the day we open presents and I had gotten them. I was so excited to have got what I had wanted that year for Christmas. That would have to be my favorite Christmas memory. Cheyenne Kiser, Olive Hill My favorite Christmas memory: There were six of us children and we only got fruit and candy for Christmas, but my dad was a child at heart. So he bought a big package of fireworks, we had some close friends and relatives over and we were shooting off the ones he got for us children. We had the fireworks in a big aluminum dishpan, we had two apple trees in the front yard and my sister was running around with a sparkler. The sparks hit a tree lumb, which came down in the pan of fireworks and they starting going off everywhere. Everyone was running, dad was yelling at us kids to get in the house. My cousin said he crawled under the porch scared for his life. Dad never bought us fireworks again. But we all had fun talking about it for years to come. We were so lucky that no one got hurt. The cousin that crawled under the porch was 7 at the time. To this day he doesn’t ever have fireworks. Elaine Babb

Thanks. Love your magazine! Julie Morgan, Winchester

Thank you to our many wonderful readers who take their time to share their memories with all of us.

I was born and raised in Snakey Holler in the Red River Gorge in Powell County, Kentucky. It’s the kind of place where everyone knows everyone - a place where people sit on their porches and wave at every single passer by and the kind of place where you can count on your neighbors if times are bad. And they were. We were all poor. We lived off deer meat and garden food. The whole community would get together and slaughter hots and split the meat. One year when I was seven years old, my sister and I had seen a picture of a little girl in a magazine and she was walking beside a “my size Barbie doll.” We instantly fell in love so we wrote our letters to Santa and asked him to bring us both a “My Size Barbie”. By then we bothy knew that “Santa” wasn’t that far away if you know what I mean. And we knew it would be hard for him to buy us those dolls and we understood. But we asked anyway, hoping with all our hearts that this year we would finally get what we really wanted. So we gave our letters to Daddy to mail and didn’t say another word about it. We prayed every night until Christmas holding the magazine ad of that little girl under our blanket with a flashlight trying not to let Daddy know much we wanted it. Christmas morning came finally and we ran into the living room and scanned over the presents for a big box, but nothing of that sort. So we put a smile on and looked at each other and opened our gloves and toboggan and our coloring books and crayons. We ate the orange and peppermint sticks in our stockings and we were happy. Just happy to be together on that day. Later in the evening, we heard Daddy say “girls, come here hurry. I think Santa forgot to put something under the tree.” So we ran into his bedroom and there on the bed were two big boxes. We both started to cry because we knew before even taking off the paper what it was. We said, “Daddy, but how ...” And he just smiled and said “because Santa thought these two dolls were as beautiful as these two little girls and beautiful things should be together.” We grabbed him around the neck and never wanted to let go. Later on in my life I realized my daddy dug ginseng for weeks and woriked two jobs and picked up every side job he could to make sure we had a great Christmas. I am proud to be my father’s daughter. He taught me so much in life and it didn’t require a penny. Love is not counted in dollars and coins. And happiness doesn’t cost a dime and you can have just as much if not more fun swinging on a tire swing as you playing an expensive game. These memories are all I have left of my sister. She passed away in 2008 at 21 years old. Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to sit down and write this story and feel like I’m standing in front of the window with her holding our “life size Barbies” watching the snow fall and seeing our Daddy secretly smiling, and knowing he did everything he could do to make our dream come true. I’m grown now and I have five children of my own and I can only pray that God gives me the will to raise them as good as Daddy did us. And I know that my sister is watching us from heaven waiting to hold my hand again. Sincerely, The girl from Snakey Holler, the greatest place on earth. Angel Campbell, Stanton

Every Christmas my little brother and I would “sleep” upstairs so all the adults, our parents, grandparents and our great-aunt could get all the presents out and gnerally have an enjoyable Christmas Eve around the tree. One year I wanted a guitar so bad I couldn’t stand it. My brother would eventually fall asleep leaving me wide awake. Amid all the talking downstairs, I heard someone “bump” a guitar on something and I heard that distinctive sound. I was so happy that I still couldn’t go to sleep! Happy memories!

This is my first time writing you. When I saw you asked for the favorite Christmas memory it pulled at my heartstrings and I had to tell you this story.

A psalm of David.

1 The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, 3 he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. 4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

inside, shake or knock logs together to dislodge insects clinging to the bark. Check the bottom of log carriers because insects often crawl into them when logs are brought indoors. Bring only enough firewood indoors to be used immediately or within a few hours. Pests emerge from firewood kept indoors for an extended period of time. This wood also can become a nesting site for rodents. Lastly, use a broom or vacuum cleaner to eliminate the occasional insect emerging from firewood.

Kentucky Fruit and Vegetable Conference is January 4-5 Keeping Firewood Pests Outside Most insects in firewood won’t harm people or their homes, but insects emerging from firewood can concern homeowners and put a damper on the pleasure from a nice, crackling fire. Homeowners can keep these pests out in the cold by handling the wood properly. “The best way to keep insects found on or inside logs out of your home, is to store and use the firewood so that you prevent their entry indoors,” said Mike Potter, entomologist with the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. “We strongly advise against spraying firewood with an insecticide. This practice is unnecessary, ineffective and could result in the release of harmful vapors when the wood is burned.” Some pests such as termites, wood-boring beetles and carpenter ants tunnel into firewood and feed within the logs. Others simply hide or overwinter underneath the bark. These include centipedes, spiders, scorpions, wood cockroaches, ground beetles, sowbugs and pillbugs. The only harm these hibernators typically cause is annoyance as they crawl or fly around the house upon emerging within a few days after the logs are bought indoors. Potter gave these tips to keep firewood insects out in the cold. Store firewood outdoors away from the house and off the ground. Stacking logs off the ground increases air circulation for drying and helps prevent moisture problems. One way is to stack firewood on poles suspended between concrete blocks or on old pallets. Burn older wood first to reduce the length of time insects have to become established in the logs. Before bringing firewood

Wilderness Wanderings . . .

Let’s Talk Turkey

Wild turkeys have always been an important food source here, both for the Native American people and European colonists as well. They were abundant, tasty, and relatively easy to bring to table. For you “nature detectives” out there, let’s take a closer look at the wild turkey and learn about this magnificent and sometimes bizarre native bird. There is only one species of wild turkey in North Hey? Who are you calling ugly??! America, but there are six easily recognizable subspecies in different ranges. My gut feeling is that someday with modern DNA research and the importance of wild turkeys government and private programs, the Wild Turkey stands with game management programs, there will be a redefining as one of the most successful efforts at saving a species from of the wild turkey groups as separate species, at least for extinction. The Wild Turkey Federation now estimates the identification purposes. The beard is not hair as many people believe, but actually it is made of special skin in the shape of long filament strands. Any hunter will delight in telling you how many inches long the beard of his Thanksgiving Tom measured, and beards can grow as big as 20 inches long. There have been as many as four beards found on a single Tom, and beards are also found on some Hen turkeys as well. Tom turkeys grow strong, sharp spurs on the back of their legs that are used for fighting other Toms and defense against predators. These spurs get bigger with age, and can get to be a very impressive 2 inches long. Toms are the ultimate macho males- puffing out their feathers to appear larger, lifting and spreading their tail feathers like a fan, and drooping their wings to drag on the ground beside them, they will strut around the females like some general reviewing his troops, with beard swinging from side to side as he slowly swaggers along. Even with all this armor and macho behavior, Toms make lousy dads. They have nothing to do with nesting or raising the young poults, that is left entirely to the females. Hen turkeys tend to be smaller than the males, and have a brown color in their feathers. This dull brown coloration helps them blend in with their surroundings, especially while sitting on the nest incubating eggs. They will walk with their tails closed and pointing down, peep and cluck as they forage…girl talk I suppose. Actually turkeys have a complex and varied language, sounding to us like so much peeping, clucking, chirping, purring, and whining, and of course the signature voice of the turkey…the gobble. Actually only the Toms gobble, and it is strikingly loud and abrupt, and can be heard up to a mile away. New research is indicating that birds may have regional accents depending on where they live in the country. You’re kidding me…a Wild Turkey with a Kentucky accent gobble or a southern drawl???!! The Hen turkey conceals her nest very well, and they are very difficult to find. The nest is usually just a small depression on the ground amid the forest leaf clutter, well hidden under a briar patch, downed brush, or tall weeds. The Hen deposits 9 to 12 eggs then begins the 28 day process of incubation, patiently sitting on them in concealment, keeping them safe and warm. The newborns, called poults, all hatch within hours of each other. They break out of the shell using an “egg tooth”, similar to a chicken or duck…or rattlesnake too. It is called “pipping”, and can take a whole day to accomplish. The poults are born with feathers, and can move about and forage within 24 hours. Life is hard for young turkeys, and they fall prey to hawks, owls, snakes, raccoons, coyotes, foxes, eagles, and virtually any forest dwelling carnivore. In a week or so they can fly, and from then on they will join the adults and roost each night in tree limbs for safety. Turkeys, like many other wilderness critters, are learning to adapt to the constant pressure of human progress and development. Although very wary of humans by nature, they have learned some interesting, and sometimes humorous ways of adapting to us humans. They have adapted well to agricultural development, and will make themselves at home in barnyards and cattle pastures, corn and soybean fields, …and vineyards hold a special appeal with those rows and rows of ripe grapes. One flock took up roosting in a side yard tree at a farm-based Bed and Breakfast hotel, and each morning after chores, they would casually fly down off their roost to the yard and saunter into the barn and eat the grain put out for the horses. In Polk City, Iowa a flock of Wild Turkeys moved into town,

The wild turkey ground nest is very difficult to find amid the tall weeds and briars, perfect concealment to protect the eggs and newborn poults. where they caused traffic jams as they slowly walked up and down the city streets. They have been known to frequent intersections where there are traffic lights, and when the light turns red, they approach stopped cars and peck insects off the front grills. In Minneapolis a Hen turkey took up residence in the front landscaping of a posh hotel, and greeted, pecked, and harassed arriving guests until she had to be removed and relocated. They have been known to “take over” back yard bird feeders, and will chase away pets and children from their newly-claimed territory. And here’s one more cool “nature detective” fact for you… Wild Turkeys can swim, although they rarely do. Wild Turkeys are one of the easiest birds to attract by call imitation, but unless they accept you as a nonthreatening predator, you must be completely hidden to get them close. To the delight of birdwatchers everywhere, more turkeys are showing up in their photo files, and to the delight of hunters, more turkeys are showing up on the Holiday table. And think of this, we could have a Post Office with a theme song “Fly like a turkey…”

Thank You For Reading Wilderness Wanderings each month in All Things Country Magazine ... We appreciate the fine writing of Bill Gordon of Stanton!

omehow summer has come and gone, the fall leaf color show (and what a spectacular one it was!) is also history, and the Holiday season is upon us. With the frosty nights my woodstove is gobbling up wood, and my major chore these days is cutting and hand-splitting firewood. Speaking of gobbling…chances are a big Tom turkey has graced your dining room table on Thanksgiving Day, or is waiting in the freezer for Christmas. Either holiday, or both, Americans associate turkey with holiday feasting, and we eat a LOT of turkey this time of year. By industry standard, we will consume over 270 million turkeys this year by the end of Christmas. That, folks, is a lot of turkeys.

Wanderings,

Twas the Night Before Christmas

~ based on our family Christmas experiences

By Christie Farris of Means, Kentucky Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the place Mamaw was running around like it was a race. Hang them stockings on the chimney, now take care, She muttered, “ Turkey, ham and cranberries, I swear.” Jeremy was chasing Shorty out of her bed And Papaw was yelling, “Hope that turkey is dead.” Kym was trying to get her iPhone to download an app And Randy was taking a long winter’s nap. When from the basement there arose such a clatter And Kip yelled up, “I just dropped the platter.” Mamaw yelled, “Don’t make a mess, I’ve potatoes to mash!” And Tracey had to get Jeremy out of the trash Ally and Will opened the door to look out at the snow And Papaw hollered, “Close the door before I find something to throw.” Katie and Grant were seated at the computer quite near, I looked around at everyone and wiped back a tear. Jeremy had made it to the fireplace and grabbed up a stick “Get it before he hits Tommy and do it real quick!” Lester and Cooper were running, playing a game And Tommy was watching cartoons just the same. Mamaw said “You best get in here and help with the mixin’ If you plan to eat any of this food that I’m fixin’” But did any of us heed her dire call? She might as well have spoke to the wall. Ally and Will had presents, trying to spy And Jeremy poked Steph in the eye. Papaw was sitting there smoking, the air was all blue Randy started coughing, thought he’d gotten the flu. “Shhhh, listen.” I cried but they thought I was a goof “I can hear sounds coming from up on the roof.” Everyone stopped for a minute listening for a sound Then the hustle and bustle continued around. “Ouch,” Tommy yelled, “Papaw ran over my foot.” And no one had noticed the fireplace, all covered with soot. Everyone rushed over to stop Tommy’s attack And no one paid heed to the one little track. “This place is chaotic,” Grant stated the fact and Katie agreed, “Oh, very.” In the kitchen Mamaw had dropped the cheesecake with cherries. Colton grabbed a tissue for Tommy’s nose to blow And Jeremy was trying to eat a bow. Ally was sitting there grinding her teeth And Mamaw was really starting to seethe. She cried at the top of her voice, “I should have just gone to the deli.” Papaw just sat there, scratching his belly. I heard Kip on the stairs and opened the door like a good little elf “Mmmm, that turkey looks good,” I said to myself “Are we going to eat?” Papaw asked from his seat. “Hurry, quick, cause I’m going to bed.” Steph held Jeremy while he was hitting her head. Grant was laughing, Steph called him a jerk And Mamaw continued on with her work. Tommy was still watching tv, blowing his nose, When a cloud of smoke, from the kitchen there rose. The smoke alarm blared, man did it whistle And Mamaw came out of the kitchen like a missile. And we heard her exclaim as she ran out the door, “Eat that you fools and don’t ask for more!”

“The Gathering” An Angel announced Christ’s coming to earth to Joseph and Mary who’ll soon give him Birth. Fear not for you Mary are highly favored above to conceive when a virgin the Son of God’s Love. Angels from on high with angelic voices proclaimed to shepherds in the night. God’s promised earthly reign in the City of David Christ the Lord is born lying in a manger in swaddling clothes adorned. From the fields at night the shepherds came Beholding this great wonder the angels proclaimed. God had prepared a glorious star to help lead wise men who traveled very far finding the place where the Holy child dwelt giving praise and adoration as before him they knelt offering their gifts. frankincense, myrrh and pure gold this is just the beginning of the greatest story ever told. Poem by Vince Homick, Stanton

God Bless everyone with Love, Joy and Peace as you celebrate the holidays with loved ones and friends. Love Eternal. Patty and Vince Homick, Stanton

SUBJECT LINE: The Buttocks

A married couple were in a terrible accident where the man’s face was severely burned. The doctor told the husband that they couldn’t graft any skin from his body because he was too skinny. So the wife offered to donate some of her own skin. However, the only skin on her body that the doctor felt was suitable would have to come from her buttocks. The husband and wife agreed that they would tell no one about where the skin came from, and they requested that the doctor also honor their secret. After all, this was a very delicate matter.
