New Year ... New Deadline

What’s Inside?

With the new year comes changes to All Things Country Magazine. Something had to

New Local Eatery

change and we took the time off between the years, as they call it, to do some re-structuring. It’s been hard coming out after the month begins, and it was something that just had to change. So, we just did it. We decided to skip to January edition, which wouldn’t even have printed until after the 11th - and instead print our February edition on the 18th, so it will come out before February even begins. Yay! Sure, some of you are missing your January edition .... but we’ll make up for it by bringing your magazines to you in a more timely manner. 2015 was a very difficult year. Dave had a few health problems, that never helps. I’m happy to say he’s back to 100%. Well, as back to 100% as he’ll ever be. Right, honey? We survived it though. And we’re excited for what 2016 brings both to our farm and to our magazine. We hope you’ll continue to support us, either by picking up a copy and thanking our advertisers or by taking out an ad or helping to sponsor a page. •••••• Winter has sure been slow to arrive. It’s cold today though. Very cold. And they say it’s going to be cold all week ... with snow by the weekend. Of course, we’ll be out delivering. But, being from Idaho, we can handle the snowy roads. It’s a few of the other drivers out there that tend to scare us. But, you know the saying ... we’ll get it delivered through rain and snow and wind. ••••••

of people searching for him and I just pray they find him before it’s too late. It’s not for the lack of effort as they have been searching day and night. •••••• The Mountain Mushroom Festival is just a few months away. Gosh, the kick off to festival season. Time just never stops, does it? We always look forward to the Mushroom Festival, held the last weekend in April in downtown Irvine. If you’ve never attended, mark your calendars now and plan to come visit Irvine. The local volunteers put in a lot of effort to bring it to you each year. •••••• We are now members of the Grayson Area Chamber of Commerce. I’ve always loved Eastern Kentucky, clear back to when I was a youngster visiting, and eventually living in Olive Hill. It made me very happy to meet Maggie at the Grayson Area Chamber of Commerce and find out we were related ... well, kind of. It’s back a ways, but yes, we are related. I love meeting family. I remember her grandparents, the Duncans, from when I was younger too. What a small world. We are excited to be more involved in the Carter County area. •••••• We took a little road trip for Christmas and visited friends in Aiken, South Carolina. It was a fun trip and it was great to get away, even if it was only for two days. Thanks to Seth Masters for taking care of our critters while we were gone. ••••••

I had the pleasure of attending another Plexus Super Saturday in January. This time in Nashville. One of my favorite towns. We didn’t get to go to the Opry this time, but we sure did learn a lot in our training sessions.Yes, I’m still convinced that Plexus is brining hope to many, many people. Whether it’s health benefits or as an extra income, it’s worth the investment to check it out. Let me know if you are interested in more information, or visit my website at theplexuspeople.com. •••••• There is a little boy missing down in Tennessee right now, and it’s just breaking my heart. He is two years old and had been missing for several days. Several cold, rainy days. There are thousands

Since the kidlet has no plans to have any more, little Jocelyn Rose will be our only grand-kidlet and we’re happy with that. Just all that much more spoiling, huh? •••••• Well, I hope you have an awesome month and enjoy our new little feature of Reader Rewards. Promoting Small & Locally-owned Businesses in Central & Eastern Kentucky Since 2006!

• 12,000 copies of All Things Country Magazine are printed and distributed each month to motels, libraries and businesses in 20 Kentucky counties. With an average of 2.4 readers per hard copy, readership totals 28,800. • Publication is FREE to the public, potential customers are not required to purchase anything to see your ad. • All Things Country Magazine is uploaded to our website each month, plus we’re on www.Issuu.com. • Content in All Things Country Magazine is useful and informative. Monthly contests keep reader’s engaged and looking for the the next issue. Recipes, short stories and poetry included from our readers as well. • Magazine advertising is image enhancing, not point-of-purchase advertising. • Readers who see your ad in All Things Country assume that you subscribe to the same philosophy as the magazine represents, and readers will be more likely to patronize your business because they assume that you appreciate the publication as much as they do. • Magazine ads last - Consumers refer to magazines multiple times—and they hold on to copies, giving advertisers added exposure. Newspapers go into the trash after a few days or a week. ATC readers save copies of the magazine for months or even longer. • Magazines are compelling. Unlike newspaper readers, 90% of readers pay full and complete attention when reading magazines. Magazine advertising addresses readers when they are sitting down and receptive rather than when they are simply catching up on current news in the local newspaper, or listening to ads on radio while concentrating on their driving.

Saving Kentucky’s Eastern Hemlock Trees

Photos provided by Kimberly Bonaccorso, Public Affairs Specialist, Daniel Boone National Forest Service

WINCHESTER– Natural resource management officials with the Daniel Boone National Forest and Kentucky Division of Forestry released predatory beetles recently to aid in the control of hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA), Adelges tsugae, an invasive insect that has devastated hemlock forests throughout the eastern United States. The predatory beetle, Laricobius osakensis, was released on national forest lands in Laurel County, Ky., where hemlock trees are known to be infested with the woolly adelgid. The Laricobius osakensis is a primary predator for HWA in its native range in Japan. Its synchronous life cycle with HWA and its voracious feeding behavior make Laricobius osakensis a promising biological control agent. This particular beetle feeds only on HWA. When its food source, the adelgid, is gone the beetle populations will also diminish. “We wouldn’t assume we would ever eliminate all the adelgids. We’re just trying to create a balance and re-establish a natural system that’s not in place at this time,” said Rusty Rhea, entomologist with the USDA Forest Service, Forest Health Protection unit in Asheville, North Carolina. The beetle release is part of a cooperative effort between the USDA Forest Service, Kentucky Division of Forestry, Tennessee Division of Forestry, University of Kentucky and the University of Tennessee.

Hemlock woolly adelgid beetles line the branches of this eastern hemlock tree. “It’s a great opportunity for my lab and the University of Tennessee to be cooperating in this project to battle this devastating pest,” said Dr. James P. Parkman, director of the Lindsay Young Beneficial Insects Laboratory. “This effort will help in controlling and managing one of the biggest insect threats to Kentucky’s forests,” said Leah W. MacSwords, Director of the Kentucky Division of Forestry. “Kentucky’s forests contain over 83 million The predatory Laricobius osakensis eastern hemlock trees, and beetles were transported from the the potential for hemlock University of Tennessee for release woolly adelgid to destroy in the Daniel Boone National Forest. hemlock populations would have a profound impact on forest ecosystems.” From experience in other states, the release of Laricobius beetles has successfully reduced HWA infestations. In addition, this predatory insect has caused no harm to other “non-target” species. The Laricobius beetles should not be confused with the common red and black-spotted “lady beetle.” These non-native beetles do not invade homes or impact agriculture.

Come For The Food - Stay For The Fun

By Pam Hedge

Dave and I had a date night recently. We don’t have them very often, but with all the new places to eat in Irvine, it gives us the perfect excuse to go out once in a while. We visited the newly opened Rockhouse Bar and Grill, located in the previous Pizza Palace building. I was excited to see another place that offers salads in the area, since that is always my first choice off of a menu. And I must say the wedge salad was awesome. Covered with bacon bits, bleu cheese chunks and pecans, it was more than I could eat. They have several salads to choose from, so I can’t wait to go back and try some of the others. Dave, along with Yvonne and David Harrison, enjoyed a Mountain Standard pizza. Now, I’ve never heard of a Mountain Standard pizza, but it sure looked good. You can see by the picture that it was covered with their special-made meatballs. Of course, I had to try a bite or two of it and it was definitely good. It was so nice to see a great crowd out to enjoy one of the new places in town. The traffic in downtown Irvine was actually moving and there were cars parrked everywhere. How awesome is that. Our little town is being revived. Our community is lucky to have Tonya and Steve Noll, owners of the business, bring this business to town. The Rockhouse is a veteran-owned, family-run business that welcomes all ages. They offer brick-oven thin New-York style pizza, subs, wings, and other appetizers. They also offer a full-service bar with 8 drafts on tap, including local Kentucky favorites, in addition to select bourbons and liquors. On Friday and Saturday nights, you’ll find live music artists and groups from the area. On Friday and Saturday nights you must be 21 or older to enter after 9pm.

Dear Estill Countians: It is with mixed emotions I write this letter. On behalf of the Estill County Fire Department, volunteers, paid staff and families we cannot thank the Estill County Community for their show of support and prayers during the recent loss of our beloved comrade. Zachary was an outstanding firefighter that loved serving and protecting. He will be sorely missed. We feel blessed to live in a community where people pause during their busy day to show respect in the manner which Estill County did. We appreciate the members of the Estill County Rescue Squad for providing traffic control and safety measures. We cannot thank the Estill County Fiscal Court and its employees enough for all the wonderful things they have done during this trying time. We also want to thank the area businesses that donated various materials, food and other items. There have been so many people that have shown support to us during this time that it would be impossible to list them all. Please know that every kind and supportive act was and continues to be much appreciated. Respectfully, Derrick Muncie Estill County Fire Chief

Uncle Bobby’s Poetry ... December’s Winner! Poetry by Bobby Hedge of Olive Hill, Kentucky

Remembering Darvin Sturgill I was thinking just this morning Of the things I most enjoy And bluegrass music always tops my list. We were all use to the presence of a Carter County boy Who is gone now and forever will be missed.   For every year the Shriner’s have their festival in town And he was always there to help them put it on. Shows would run from noon to midnight After that the folks would jam And a lot of times that lasted until dawn.   The third week of July each year The show will go as planned And every year they’ll turn another page. But now it has to go Without the help of Darvin’s hand And we all will miss his presence on the stage.   He loved to sing and bluegrass Was a big part of his life I use to love to go down to his place. A little music store belonging To him and his wife We’d go there and jam on snowy winter day’s.   Him and his band “Willow Creek ’’ Played many local shows Singing songs of life that all of us enjoyed. He’s been called to his reward And never more will grace our stage And no one else can ever fill the void.

The Valentine As long as mountains grace the sky And streams and rivers run, As long as trees and flowers grow Beneath the summer sun. As long as nature lets two peoples Hearts become entwined, When those two hearts become as one That makes a Valentine. When you can look in someone’s eyes And thank the Lord above That he has sent you someone Full of warmth and full of love. You’ll know what love is all about And you wont need a sign, To tell you that’s the one you want You’ve found your Valentine. There’s no way one can measure love We don’t know what its worth, But we can be assured that its The strongest thing on earth. So when you give cards or candy Or whatever you might do, Let that someone know you love them And you’re glad that they love you.

Just a Reminder!

We’ve had a mild winter. This is a reminder of what it looked like last year at this time at the AlpacaBerry Farm in Palmer.

Cabin Spotlight

Cliffhanger

Just finished on November 1st, Cliffhanger’s name does not say it all! Yes, it’s quite close to the cliff, but it sits on a beautifully wooded and private lot near a small creek which flows over the 200-foot cliff. The creek and falls are especially impressive during spring or after rains. The cabin itself boasts a full-length deck across the front, an open covered porch in the back, and a screened-in area. You are all set to enjoy the outdoors in any kind of weather. Since this cabin has two queen bedrooms, it is great for a single couple, two couples, two singles, or a family of three or four. There is a somewhat steep uphill/downhill gravel driveway, but you will find the setting and cabin worth it!

slow birth, followed by a delay in standing and nursing,” she said. “That is the immediate concern, and then the next step is maintaining the calf’s core temperature.” If possible, producers should bring cows into the barn to calve in a heavily bedded, clean pen. If cows must calve outdoors, make sure there is dry, clean ground available without a large amount of manure. If cows do calve outdoors and calves show signs of hypothermia, or there are no natural windbreaks, producers should bring calves in until they are warm and dry.

Make Farm Record Keeping A Priority Record keeping may not be every farmer’s favorite activity, and probably not the reason you got into farming as a career. With time, patience and a commitment to get it done, it can make your financial life a lot less worrisome. According to UK Agriculture Economist Steve Isaacs, record keeping doesn’t have to be stressful. It’s a way to discover things about your farm that will help you make better long-term decisions. You can use a ledger book or a computer—whatever helps you maintain consistency. Software programs can make your data more meaningful. Software has become more user-friendly over time, and while it may not make the record keeping process fun, it could help you see the overall picture of your operation. Some programs track purchases of inputs and how you use the input on a particular enterprise or field. You’ll be able to keep track of repair and maintenance records for specific farm equipment and produce balance sheets, income statements and cash flow budgets. For many livestock operations, a good time to start keeping records is when the veterinarian comes to check the herd. Vets usually charge per head, so that data can help you develop a list of animals that need attention. You can use the same data to develop health histories of your animals, which will lead to more informed exams and diagnosis in the future. Make record keeping a team effort for your family. Sit down and work on the records and budget together. Perhaps one person can read the information while another person types it into the software program or writes it in the ledger book. Also, if you do a little bit each day and don’t save it all up for the end of the year, you won’t become overwhelmed. If you’ve done the work throughout the year, year-end procedures can feel more satisfying. You can generate yearend reports with a few simple clicks and not have to sort through stacks of bills lying around the home or office. The University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment’s Department of Agricultural Economics has several tools online that could help with budgeting and decision making. Visit http://www2.ca.uky.edu/agecon/index. php?p=29 to see what is available. If you prefer to keep records on paper, Kentucky Farm Record Books are available at your local Extension office. If you need more information, contact the Estill County Extension office at 723-4557.

Take Precautions With Newborn Calves With winter temperatures and resulting wind chills, cattle producers need to pay special attention to newborn calves. University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment ruminant veterinarian Michelle Arnold said extra precautions would go a long way in helping calves survive. “A calf’s body temperature often falls below normal due to a

24

Signs of hypothermia include shivering and blood shunting. In the early stages of hypothermia, a calf will show vigorous shivering usually accompanied by increased pulse and breathing rate. Cold nostrils and pale, cold hooves are early signs that blood is being shunted away from the body’s extremities. Watch for erratic behavior, confusion and a clumsy gait. As hypothermia progresses, shivering stops and muscles become rigid and pulse and respiration slow down. Brain cell metabolism slows and impairs brain function. The calf’s level of consciousness deteriorates and signs of life become difficult to detect. The pupils of the eyes will be dilated and fixed, and it may be hard to detect a pulse. The calf may have occasional gasps of respiration, and that may be the only clue that the calf is still alive. Heart failure may be the actual cause of death. “The two most important factors in calf survival are warmth and colostrum,” Arnold said. “Colostrum is a concentrated source of protein, vitamins, minerals and energy, and it also contains antibodies to diseases or vaccines that the mother cow has been exposed to. Before you give colostrum, you need to make sure to warm the calf because the weak ones may not have enough strength to suckle. Sometimes you may need to deliver colostrum through an esophageal feeder.” Dark Karo syrup is a quick source of energy for calves and their bloodstream quickly absorbs it. UK Extension beef specialist Jeff Lehmkuhler contributed several ways to warm newborn calves: 1) place calves next to floorboard heaters of pickup trucks; 2) submerse wet calves in warm baths and gradually heat the water to 100 degrees Fahrenheit meanwhile supporting the calves’ heads to prevent drowning. Continue changing water out to maintain temperature; 3) place calves next to the heater in the house; 4) place calves under heat lamps, but be careful to cover the lamp with a screen so the calf will not get burned as it becomes more active; 5) wrap the calf in warm blankets, but not so hot that they burn the skin, and change the blankets as necessary to maintain warmth; 6) place the calf in a hot box or warming box, but not so hot that they burn the skin, with some type of venting is necessary to prevent carbon monoxide and moisture. Air movement is important to ensure thorough warming and to prevent hot spots in the warming box; and 7) ask a veterinarian administer warm IV fluids. “Once the calf is warm, provide colostrum and maintain body temperature,” Arnold said. “If the calf is unwilling to suckle and it’s not possible to milk the mother cow, you should consider commercial colostrum-replacement products.” Calves need colostrum as soon as possible after the suckle reflex has returned, generally within the first six hours after birth, but ideally within the first hour or two. Once the calf is warm and fed, move it back to its mother. For more information, contact the Estill County Extension Office at 723-4557 or your local veterinarian practice. Educational programs of the Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service serve all people regardless of race, color, age, sex, religion, disability, or national origin.

Applications For Kentucky Farm Bureau’s College Scholarships Available Now Louisville – The holiday season may have just come to a close, but Kentucky Farm Bureau (KFB) has one more gift to give to a select number of high school seniors across the state – college scholarships. Later this spring, the KFB Education Foundation will award college scholarships ranging from $400 to $4,000 to 87 high school seniors pursuing a fouryear degree. To be considered, students must complete the application available for download at kyfb.com/scholarships and return the requested material to KFB postmarked by February 29, 2016. Qualifying students will have at least a 3.5 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) or a minimum 23 ACT score, be the child of a KFB member, and finish high school within the year in which they apply. KFB also offers four additional scholarships, ranging from $1,000 to $3,000. To be considered for these college scholarships, students must meet the varied criteria outlined for each, complete the appropriate downloadable application available at kyfb.com/scholarships and return the requested material to KFB postmarked by April 29, 2016. “The Foundation’s goal is to assist as many individuals as possible in attaining their educational pursuits,” said Susie Tanner, Coordinator of KFB’s Education Foundation. “Postsecondary education costs continue to rise and Farm Bureau scholarships help defray some of the expenses associated with obtaining a degree. There is no better investment for the

organization than to invest in our members and their children.” KFB’s Education Foundation, created to help Farm Bureau members and their families reach their goal of obtaining postsecondary education, was formed in 1953. During the last 62 years, the Education Foundation has awarded approximately 1,500 college scholarships – worth more than $2.3 million dollars – to both traditional and non-traditional students. To learn more about these and several other college scholarships offered by Kentucky Farm Bureau, visit kyfb. com/scholarships.
