Another Mushroom Festival in the books! Well, another month - and another Mushroom Festival - is in the books. Whew. It seems like time just travels so quickly the older you get. Haven’t I said that in the past? Of course, your memory goes with age too. LOL. We had a great time at the festival and met so many nice people that stopped by our booth. Some knew us through the magazine, some through the radio, and some through the farm. It was the first time we had set up by ourselves at the festival and it sure takes a lot of work. Of course, we missed a lot at the festival too. We were so busy that I only made it down to the entertainment stage once. I definitely missed walking around the festival and visiting with other people like I’ve done in years past. We were thankful that we took the C2H2 Farm’s fifth wheel down there, especially when the storms hit on Saturday night. They weren’t nearly as bad as they could have been had they traveled a bit farther north. But it rained pretty hard for a while and we were thankful the winds weren’t bad.

•••••• We were saddened to arrive home on Sunday and find that our beloved Gracie girl had passed away while we were gone. She was a great dog and we sure do miss her. Of course, the other dogs are taking the attention we gave to Gracie, so they are happy. •••••• May brings us Mother’s Day and Memorial Day - two holidays that are always close to my heart.Yes, I’m a mother - so I am blessed to enjoy Mother’s Day even though the kidlet lives in Washington State. Of course, this is the first Mother’s Day since my dear aunt Carole went to heaven, so I am kind of dreading the day too. And Memorial Day falls on May 25th this year - which is the kidlet’s birthday! We hope she enjoys her special day. It seems like yesterday that she was born and now she is turning 33.

finishing up delivery on Friday so won’t get to spend much time there that day. •••••• We’re also looking forward to visiting with Buddy Mason and the rest of the Judge Talford Band in Winchester next week. They are playing at the Clark Energy Annual Meeting on May 12. I’m hoping to meet Lois from Clark Energy too. I’ve talked to her through email for about six years now and we’ve still never met. ••••••

Pregnancy Center Fundraiser Begins By Pam Hedge

O

ver the past several months, I’ve had a couple different meetings with the fine folks from the Estill County Center for Pregnancy & Parenting and I’ve come away amazed at what all this amazing center is doing for the community. They are a local ministry offering help and hope to those facing challenges in pregnancy and parenting. Located at 126 Kentucky Avenue in Irvine, the center is managed by Director Sandra Richardson Wilds and is operated with the helpful assistance from volunteer mentors Karen Burford and Rebecca Wolfinbarger. The ECCPP seeks to serve families who may be facing the challenges of an unplanned pregnancy. They offer free pregnancy tests and all services are confidential. They also offer a parenting curriculum to parents of young children and those that are pregnant. Caring, non-judgmental support is made available at a critical time in life - through educational, faith-based services, clients are given information on pregnancy and related topics in order to make more informed decisions throughout their pregnancy and once the child has arrived. There are rewards for completing lessons in the parenting curriculum - in the form of ‘store-credit’ to shop for baby items in the Baby Boutique, located at the center. It’s an “Earn While You Learn” model that has been very successful in many areas. Forty families were served in their first year of operation. The center was blessed when the River Drive Christian Church decided to ‘donate’ them a building behind the church that had previously been rented out. They are open every Tuesday and Thursday from 10am until 5pm. All ages are served at the center and many men also utilize their services. All of the

Mentors Rebecca Wolfinbarger and Karen Burford, along with Director Sandra Richardson Wilds show off the baby bottles at the Estill County Center for Pregnancy & Parenting. classes are done with clients one-on-one and the mentors help with setting goals and parenting plans. Everything in the Baby Place Shop is donated and the center will always take clothing donations up to size 2T. They can always use donations of diapers, formula and toys. The main fundraiser for the center begins in May and we hope you can help them out. The Baby Bottle fundraiser is a great way to help out the center. Many area churches have picked up their bottles and will hand them out to those wanting to fill one with change. The bottles hold about $27.00 in silver coins, less if it’s all pennies. But every single penny helps to keep this center operating. There are two sizes of the bottles - a larger one is available to businesses that want to participate. The fundraiser lasts from Mother’s Day to Father’s Day and brings in about 70% of their yearly operating costs. If you are interested in this fundraiser, please contact the center at the number listed below or send

them an email. The Estill County Center for Pregnancy & Parenting is a non-profit, interdenominational ministry seeking to serve Jesus Christ by upholding the sanctity of human life; offering assistance through mentoring and tangible help to those who face challenges in pregnancy and parenting; ministering to emotional and spiritual needs resulting from abortion and promoting sexual integrity. You can reach the center by calling 606-723-0184 or emailing them at familyliferesources40336@ gmail.com. They also have a website that will allow you to make monetary donations.

Garden Gate Greenhouse located at 13806 N. State Highway 7 Grayson, Kentucky is a family owned business that opened in 2001. Bill and Julie Bush, owners, operate a greenhouse on approximately one acre in scenic Carter County, Kentucky. In addition to producing and selling quality flowers, quality gardening plants (including heirlooms), shrubs and several variety of fruit trees, the greenhouse offers “planting parties” and other special events. One of the most successful services is doing custom plantings - customers bring in their containers and Julie fills them with gorgeous plant combinations. Julie’s motto is, “WE GET OUR HANDS DIRTY SO YOU DON’T HAVE TO”. The Garden Gate Greenhouse also has a gift shop on site which features quality gardening tools, home décor items and more. The Greenhouse is open April 1st through June 30th. As a amateur gardener, I have bought several garden plants from Garden Gate Greenhouse but my most valuable purchase was the June Apple Tree that is planted at my house. Due to high demand, Garden Gate Greenhouse sells out of their June Apple Trees most years. Garden Gate Greenhouse is a member of the Grayson Chamber of Commerce. Yards to Paradise by Max Phelps

Spring Landscaping & Tree Planting April showers they say bring May flowers: but, not if you don’t plant something first! Gardening, landscaping, even mowing the grass sounds good after a long snowy winter. The plants are breaking dormancy and some are blooming, trees are getting a fresh shade of green, seasonal garden centers have opened for business. It’s a good time to landscape. Trees and shrubs can be planted most anytime of the year, but spring is when most folks get in the mood to do something with their yard. As I always say, start with a plan. Make a list. Then go shopping. (Or call a landscaper for help if you aren’t sure of yourself.) Try to avoid buying pretty plants on impulse at the stores unless they were in your plans already, as that’s where they entice you to take home expensive plants you didn’t need. Being in a hurry, in a rush, Max Phelps generally also costs extra money in the long run. If you buy the latest plant to hit the market you always pay a premium. If you call a landscaper at his busy season, you will often pay extra to ‘get ‘er done’ when everybody else wants quick service, too. Having a plan and buying what you need, in smaller sizes and when they’re discounted, will save money and work out just fine over time. Some folks don’t think they have forever, and certainly if they’re getting along up in years this may be true, and want the landscape of their dreams now and not later. Taking stock of what is blooming and what you love may be easier in springtime when you can observe it firsthand. If you’ve been wishing for the dream landscape for a long time and have decided now’s the time, then I agree springtime is a wonderful time to design, shop, plant and dress with mulch. Spring is an exciting time, refreshing and renewing. If we imagine you want a whole new yard, it easily can run ten percent of the cost of the house and lot, and much more if you Continued on Page 9

Yards to Paradise,

Continued from page 8 want special paving, huge retaining walls, a swimming pool, large outdoor kitchens and such desirable amenities as a large water feature or fancy privacy fencing of brick or wrought iron and the like. On the other hand, many can’t afford everything at once. Pencil in the workshop or shed, the storm shelter if the house doesn’t already have a basement. Home additions or decks and patios, plus additional parking and drives—decide on these things early so you don’t plant trees or do lots of cute landscaping and then have to tear it out when you do the bigger projects. You can go ahead with part of the landscaping plan and have it begin to grow and establish itself, knowing it’s planted where it belongs. Time to start a simple list. or for windbreaks do you already have? Do they need moving or eliminating? Will they blend nicely with the trees you’d like to add? And just what trees would you want to add—what would you like to see in your yard that isn’t there now? Once you have allowed for any construction plans, trees come before shrubs and perennials. Following a well-thought-out decision, get ready to purchase some trees, before somebody else buys the best ones! If you’re hiring your project done, find out about the pros and cons of your potential landscape contractor. Has he made boo-boos in your neighborhood? Does he really consider your wishes, or does he talk you into agreeing with his own ideas. All I’m suggesting is do a bit of homework and don’t call the one with the biggest ad or the fanciest truck, but rather one who will work well with you and take the time to do it right and be proud to be associated with it years later. Springtime tree and shrub planting plus perennial beds, these are usually done first: adding annual color such as tulips, marigolds, pansies and the like are the kinds of things you can do on a whim. They’re not long-term commitments. Even if you aren’t sure yet about your master plan, you may want to get the front yard looking a bit spiffy with some flowering annuals, with a large planter full of attractive plants, do a flowering vine on the mailbox post, and other simple things to give a bit of cheer to a dull yard. I hope to have both given useful advice with today’s column, and inspired you to do something in the yard this spring. At the least, you can get outside and not look wistfully out the window. It’s spring!

My Fondest Memory of My Mother Each year on Easter Sunday my mother would present my two sisters and I a corsage to wear with our new dress. She always made us feel special and we knew she loved us everyday. But Easter was a special time for her to share with her three girls - something she also had a special interest in “flowers.” Mom would work to save enough all year long to place her Easter order with the three of us on her mind and in her heart. Then one special Easter, my older sister and I, now ages 12 and 13, saved our babysitting money to buy our mother a special floral delight. Our father drove us to the florist, then he sat in the car while we went inside to plan and set into motion Mother’s Surprise. We talked to a lady named Betty, who was the owner of the shop. We told her about our mom and what she had done for us every year since we could remember. Betty recommended orchids, they were very delicate, soft and beautiful just like our mother. So we sealed the deal and paid for the corsage, set a delivery time on Saturday when we knew mom and dad would be away at the grocery store. We went home with much excitement and anticipation. We hurried home and secretly made hand crafted cards to say thank you and express our love. We tucked them away in a secret place to keep them private and safe. Finally Saturday arrived, mom and dad left for their weekly shopping trip and just as Betty promised, the flowers arrived. My sister 10

and I peeked into the lovely gold colored box and saw the most wonderful thing we could ever imagine. The corsage was made up with 3 orchids, lace, decorative netting and a wonderful orchid color bow. We were pleased and knew in our hearts that mom was going to be very surprised. Again, as every year, Easter Sunday came as spectacular as ever. We dressed in our frilly new dressed, mother gave us each our Easter Corsage. Now it was time for her surprise, we ran and gathered up her corsage and cards and made her promise not to peek while we prepared her gift ~ laying it gently on her lap. Now open your eyes Mom. We love you and thanks for our flowers over the years and for loving us. Needless to say, mom was in tears and she hugged all three of us girls like she was never going to turn us loose. But, she finally did, and we asked dad to pin her flowers on for her. We thought we had pulled off the greatest surprise ever, so as the family gathered at the door to leave for church, mom was in the lead and dad bringing up the rear. Mother stepped out onto the front porch and let out a huge gasp ~ we all hurried out to look. Low and behold the whole screened in porch area was filled with vase after vase of flowers, all kinds and types of flowers everywhere. There was a big note pinned on the largest vase of flowers from Betty. She stated she was so overjoyed to have served this family with flowers

every Easter for the past 10 years. That her heart was blessed, and she had to give our family what we all loved so much ~ the gift of flowers. This day, not only mother had a surprise, the whole family was blessed by a caring flower shop owner named Betty. Each year mother still gave her three girls flowers at Easter from Betty’s Shop, until our sweet mother passed away in 2010. Now we in turn make sure she continues to have flowers every Easter from Betty’s Floral Shop. Betty has gone on now too, but her daughter still runs the shop and knows just what our mother likes. My oldest sister has gone on now as well, and she gets flowers too every Easter thanks to Betty’s daughter. Tradition and love makes us have special ties and love at Easter. Just the way Jesus dying for our sins and rising on Easter Sunday makes us feel a tradition and inspiration for the Easter Celebration. This is my fondest memory of Mother. So not only as Mother’s Day approaches, but as our Easter Sunday is coming soon, I will always love and adore my mother and the sacrifices she made for our happiness, but for the memory of her humbleness when she was honored with her favorite gift “Flowers.” Thanks for letting me share this memory with you! In honor of my mother Jayne. Sincerely, Dianna Elliott, Booneville

The Mahala Mullins Cabin By Erin Kathleen Turley, ATC Writer

M

ahala Mullins could perhaps be the most infamous Melungeon of all time. The Melungeons are of SpanishPortuguese descent. They were isolated from other commoners and remotely lived in Western Virginia, North Carolina, Eastern Tennessee and Kentucky. Mahala is a legacy in her region. She was a moonshiner and sold in the 1800s. As a child, I remember hearing stories about her. One story included how the police could never arrest her for being a bootlegger. Her house I was told was located with one side being on Tennessee land and the other side was on Virginia land. When the Tennessee authorities would come to arrest her, she simply would move to the other side of the house, the Virginia side. She would do the same when the Virginia authorities would come to arrest her as well. I remember this story very well and the wild creativity you have as child, pronounced wide and deep variations of how she lived. Reality however, doomed the phrase by the judge, “Catchable but not fetchable” as the sheriff explained they could not arrest her on the account of her weight. At the time there was no way they could have gotten off of the mountain with Mahala’s weight deeming anywhere from 500 to 800 lbs. (different stories have different weights for her). She suffered from elephantiasis, a disease that greatly affected her legs. Some say that she was so large that they had to take the fireplace down to get her out; others say that the wall was taken down where the door was located. Her coffin was her bed as they built it up to make an actual coffin. She is buried on private property on Newman’s Ridge in Hancock County, Tennessee. In 2000, the cabin was moved off Newman’s Ridge, giving guests the opportunity to see how she and her family lived. The cabin is unique and a great place to visit to find out about The Melungeon history. A gift shop is located across from the

UK Equine Farm and Facilities Expo is June 2 University of Kentucky Ag Equine Programs will host its annual Equine Farm and Facilities Expo from 3:30 to 8:00 p.m. EDT Tuesday, June 2 at McPeek Racing’s Magdalena Farm in Lexington. Horse owners and farm managers will have the opportunity to walk through a vendor trade show and see a range of equipment and supplies for horse farms of all sizes. UK specialists will provide hands-on instruction about practical aspects of management for equine operations. There will also be farm tours. “The expo provides horse owners the chance to attend an informative event on the grounds of a working horse farm. We appreciate Kenny McPeek for hosting this event and for opening the farm’s gates to the public,” said Ray Smith, professor and forage Extension specialist for the UK College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. According to Fayette County agriculture and natural resources Extension agent Nick Carter, the expo is a unique opportunity for horse owners to learn about a wide range of topics, from pasture weed management to footing for exercise areas. University of Kentucky experts will lead demonstrations on subjects including footing, pasture weed management and landscape decisions on horse farms. In addition, McPeek will share with attendees what he looks for in a yearling. There will also be a number of informational booths staffed by UK specialists. McPeek Racing specializes in selection, management and training of Thoroughbred racehorses. McPeek serves on the board of UK Ag Equine Programs and has been training racehorses since 1985. The farm is located at 2651 Russell Cave Road in Lexington. Admission to the expo is free, and a meal will be provided. Reservations are appreciated. Contact the Fayette County Extension office at 859-257-5582 to reserve a spot.

Buttercups in Pastures

One of the signs that spring has arrived is when yellow buttercups begin to appear, but it’s during the winter months that the vegetative growth of buttercup actually takes place. As a coolseason weed, this plant often flourishes in over-grazed pasture with poor stands of desirable forages. In fact, many fields that have dense buttercup populations are fields heavily grazed by animals during the fall through the early spring months. Buttercups are sometimes classified as short-lived perennials, but often grow as winter annuals. Plants typically produce five, shiny yellow petals in the early spring. There are four different

22

May 2015

www.atcky.com

species of buttercups that may be found in Kentucky: bulbous buttercup (Ranunculus bulbosus), creeping buttercup (Ranunculus repens), tall buttercup (Ranunculus acris) and small flower buttercup (Ranunculus arbortivus). Although each of these plants may have somewhat similar flower heads, each of these buttercup species differs somewhat in their vegetative leaf characteristics. New seeds are produced during the time petals are showy. If you wait until after flowers appear, it can be too late to implement control tactics. This is one reason buttercups can survive year to year and new plants emerge each year. Most buttercup plants emerge from seed during the fall or late winter months. Therefore, pasture management practices that improve and promote growth of desirable plants during these months are the best methods to help compete against the emergence and growth of this plant. Whereas, livestock overgrazing fields during the fall and winter months is one of the main factors that contribute to buttercup problems. You can mow fields or clip plants close to the ground in the early spring before buttercup plants can produce flowers and that may help reduce the amount of new seed produced, but mowing alone will not totally eliminate seed production. For chemical control, herbicides registered for use on grass pastures that contain 2,4-D will effectively control buttercup. Depending on other weeds present products that contain dicamba and 2,4-D (eg. Weedmaster), aminopyralid (eg. ForeFront, Milestone), triclopyr (eg. PastureGard, Crossbow) or metsulfuron (eg. Cimarron) can also be used. However, legumes such as clovers interseeded with grass pastures can be severely injured or killed by these herbicide products. For optimum results apply a herbicide in the early spring (February - March) before flowers are observed, when buttercup plants are still small and actively growing. For best herbicide activity, wait until daytime air temperatures are greater than 50 degrees for two to three consecutive days. Consult the herbicide label for further information on grazing restrictions, precautions or other possible limitations. For fields heavily infested with buttercup, you may need a variety of control tactics. Apply a herbicide to help reduce the population of buttercup plants in the spring, plus use good pasture management techniques throughout the year to help improve and thicken the stand of desirable forages. The University of Kentucky’s 2015 Grazing School will be May 20-21 at the Woodford County Extension office and UK Oran C. Little Research farm both in Woodford County. Hosted by extension specialists with the UK College of Agriculture, Food and Environment, the program begins both days at 7:30 a.m. EDT and concludes at 5:30 p.m. During the school, new and experienced producers of beef and dairy cattle, goats and sheep can gain important knowledge in proper care and management for their animals and pastures. A brochure that includes the program details is available online on the UK Master Grazer Program website http://www2.ca.uky.edu/grazer/Grazing_School_2015_Brochure. pdf. Pre-registration is required. For agriculture programming information, contact the Estill County Cooperative Extension Service at 723-4557. Educational programs of the Cooperative Extension Service serve all people regardless of race, color, sex, religion, disability or national origin.

Silent Killers

T

he hawk sat bolt upright in the middle of the field. We saw it alongside the drive coming into the Highlands property, and stopped to watch, sure that there must be prey lying on the ground at its feet. I rolled down the car window to get a better look at the hawk, now intently staring at us from a hundred feet away. A beautiful bird, I could see the markings clearly. It had a mottled light-colored chest, bold striped tail, and deep dark eyes- intent, studying, fierce. A Broad-winged Hawk, rarely sighted here, and an awesome sighting on this drab early-spring day. After five minutes it hopped several times getting into some taller grass. Surprisingly, it was not on a kill, time to investigate. We got out of the car and slowly ventured close. The hawk was in some kind of distress; it wouldn’t fly as we approached. The bird was in a defensive posturewings partially distended, beak open and menacing. I looked all around it, not seeing any visible signs of wounding or broken bones. As I stood there, it toppled over on its side, not even able to remain upright. I took off my jacket and wrapped the bird in it, careful to cover the head and beak, and keeping the claws from causing us harm. Suzi carried the hawk on her lap to the house, where we put it in a large box, and made plans to take it to a raptor rehab for treatment. Sadly, hours later it was dead. The silent killer was most likely someone using D-Con to kill rodents in their barn, which were then eaten by this unsuspecting Broadwing. Collateral damage - one of the best natural rodent controllers killed in someone’s attempt to control rodents. D-Con, along with products like Hot Shot, Talon, and Havoc, are “second generation” rodenticides, containing an anti-coagulant chemical called brodifacoum; a particularly insidious, slow-acting, lethal ingredient that causes extremely gruesome death. Rodents will continue eating the bait after a lethal dose is ingested, and while they slowly die over the period of a few days, they become attractive, slow-moving prey for a myriad of rodent-eating birds and mammals, barn cats, and house pets, who often carrying the poison miles away from the point of application. Even children are prone to eating the bait, the U.S. CDC reports about 15,000 cases per year! Some farmers I know still consider hawks, and all predators, pests or threats to livestock, and will often kill them on sight, when their presence is

really a huge benefit to a farm. It rained steady for most of the day yesterday, and today I took a walk along some of the wet woodland trails, a favorite activity of mine this time of year. The wet leaves make silent walking fairly easy, and with no new leaves breaking out yet on the trees, visibility in the woods was excellent. A shiny object caught my eye, a Mylar balloon released from someone’s birthday party no doubt; it had the graphics “From All of Us”. This is litter of the new century, and I find them on almost every walk, and have seen them floating out in the Atlantic Ocean while sailing offshore, on deserted Bahamian islands, in marshes and rivers along the east coast, and in the Canadian wilderness. What fun it is to release those special occasion balloons, with wishes of happiness and good fortune, but usually without any thought that they do come down to earth sometime, somewhere. Sadly, those party-goers become silent killers, unleashing balloons that are often mistaken as food, ingested by many animals and fish, with lethal results. I sometimes do volunteer work at Exuma Land and Sea National Park in the Bahamas, leading nature hikes that focus on local ecology and history. At the park we have a whale skeleton on display, a magnificent Sperm Whale that washed up on the beach one day dead. Carcass necropsy tests showed the animal died from ingesting plastic grocery bags. Americans alone use one hundred billion bags a year, most all going into landfills where they will sit for up to a thousand years before degrading. It takes a whopping twelve million barrels of oil annually just to make those bags, and stores pay four billion dollars a year to buy them…to give them to you. (of course, you know you pay for them in increased food prices). Target Stores alone buy nearly two billion bags a year. If you even care enough to look, they’re everywhere; in our streams, rivers, and lakes, along the beaches and open ocean, hanging from tree branches and desert cactus (where they’re called “desert jellyfish”), clogging Continued on Page 27

Bill Gordon,

landfills and littering our roadsides. Far too many of us are silent killers, tossing bags, letting them blow off porches and escape from garbage cans. I applaud stores like Aldi’s that just refuse to offer bags at all…you bring your own box or sack to cart home your groceries. The other night I was driving into Lexington on the interstate. A pickup passed me, and when it was a few hundred yards ahead, a stream of bright orange sparks shot out of each side window, spiraling down onto the highway as I passed by them. Pull up to any urban intersection for the traffic light, and take a look at the curbside. What you’ll see are hundreds, if not thousands of butts… unless the street sweepers had been working the night before. Walk any parking lot, stroll in any park, walk any sidewalk, go to any campsite, stand on the bank of any stream, river, or lake, sit on any beach- you will be in sight of cigarette filters. The careless littering of cigarette butts is largely an unnoticed and ignored nightmare worldwide. Litterbug smokers are silent killers, here’s why. Most filters are made of cellulose acetate, a plastic that is spun into tiny Y-shaped fibers. After a few years these tiny fibers begin breaking into smaller pieces, lethal to small organisms that are food for fish fry, amphibians, and aquatic insects. The smoke toxins in the butt are extremely lethal, and one butt in two gallons of water will kill minnows. Fishermen, you should be very concerned. Annually there is an International Coastal Cleanup Day, where 500,000 volunteers worldwide pick up beach litter. The predominant litter item is the cigarette butt. 50% of Australia litter is cigarette butts. Depending on location, research in the U.S. says 25-50% of litter is butts. We assume smoking addiction is declining, but in reality worldwide smoking has doubled in the last 30 years. The World Health Organization estimates that worldwide one in three people over fifteen years old smoke! One of my favorite stories when I am doing a “What Left THAT in My Backyard?” workshop in schools is about the day I found a Raccoon poop along a woodland trail. As a “nature detective” I will examine any animal evidence I see, and when looking at this poop, I discovered it contained a crumpled up candy bar wrapper. Funny, here was a poop laced with bright yellow plastic and blackberry seeds. It made a great story.

Apparently someone ate a candy bar snack, thoughtlessly threw the wrapper aside, which probably had bits of candy bar stuck to it. The Raccoon found the morsel, and ate it, wrapper and all. The unsuspecting forest critter was lucky…and dodged a lethal bullet as the wrapper passed through its digestive system. Likewise, that litterbug almost became a silent killer, oblivious to nearly causing the painful death of the unwary Raccoon.

Oh, by the way, it was a Butterfinger.

Everyone is familiar with the feisty little Ruby-throated Hummingbirds that frequent our nectar feeders during the summer months. What a joy to have a feeder or two on the porch or convenient back yard tree, where the antics and aerial acrobatics of these fascinating birds can be savored close-at-hand. Who would guess many of us become silent killers when we purchase commercial nectar replacement laced with chemicals and red dye to “attract” the birds. Hummers are hugely popular and much research is being done concerning these birds. We now know that Hummers are carnivores; they do not eat nectar. They drink nectar for sure, as a fuel source for flight (nectar is pure sugar water: carbohydrates = fuel for muscles to work for flight)… they eat tiny insects for nutrients for survival: proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals. And we also now know they have incredible “telescopic” vision and can see like we can with powerful binoculars. They can see every tiny insect in your whole yard, every tiny blossom on every plant, and can see your nectar feeder a half mile away! They need to eat every fifteen minutes or starve, and they hunt by sight. What we are learning is that they are very sensitive to the red dye, which affects their ability to see and find food, causing them to starve to death. Don’t be a silent killer; quickly and easily make your own Hummer nectar by mixing 4 parts water and 1 part pure cane sugar (Domino brand is pure cane sugar and labeled as such). As consumers, we need to read product labels carefully, understand ingredients, and learn their effects on us and the environment. We also need to better understand that we are part of and connected to all other living creatures on earth, and everything we do has an effect on everything around us. Often it’s not the big problems that do us in, but the little ones that continue to add up unnoticed and ignored until they become regrettable mistakes. Modern technology has come a long way in aiding our quest for knowledge and understanding, but often it is too little, too late. Responsibility and action are hampered by comfort, convenience, and our unquenchable desire to consume; plain and simple. www.atcky.com

Just what is this Plexus Stuff all about? By Pam Hedge

If you follow me on Facebook, you’ll see my posts about Plexus and this pink drink that many are drinking. So, just what is this Plexus all about? Plexus is an all-natural line of vitamins and supplements that help with a variety of things, including weight loss. It took me six months or more to finally try it - and I haven’t missed a day since early December of 2014. I feel better than I have in years - and the weight loss is just an added bonus. Yes, I’ve lost over 30 pounds just by drinking this pink drink and following it up each day with lots of water. What it has done for Dave and I is remarkable. At least I think so. No more afternoon naps because we’re both exhausted. No more aches and pains each day. We wake up alert and ready to start our day. My dad, the Captain, is even drinking it and feeling so much better. I just cannot express what it’s done for him.

Theresa Delaware, Plexus Ambassador, took her pink drink to the Dominican Republic with her. I’m proud to say she is part of my Pink Posse team, along with my dad and Shirley Lowe of Clay City. Contact any of us for more information.

I prayed for an answer to help with dad’s shoulder pain and two days later I tried Plexus. The rest is history. I’ve went to meetings in Macon, Georgia; Nashville, Tennessee and Columbus, Ohio - just to learn as much as I can. What I’ve gained from these meetings is more than that though. I’ve heard testimonies from people that brought me to tears. When you see people speaking that say it’s literally saved their lives - you pay attention. There was the nurse addicted to pain pills, the MS patient that was now walking again, the marathon runner who thought she was healthy - at least until she tried Plexus. Now she realizes just how unhealthy she was. If you are interested in learning more, please give me a call at 606-895-4018. I’d love to share my testimony with you.

I sent you pictures that I cannot say I had anything to do with. I am super proud as our 11 year old, Riley Elizabeth, took this picture on the back roads of Winchester going towards Mt. Sterling. She is creative, artsy, smart, ambitious, and very active in sports (soccer and basketball) as well as her academics. If I could be like anyone in the world, I would want to be just like her! I know my grandfather would be so proud as he was a great photographer and chose this as one of his many passions...I would say she is just like him and we are blessed to have her as our daughter. Favorite Memories from our Readers My favorite memory of my mom is the day I graduated high school. She encouraged and pushed me so I would graduate a year early. I graduated at age 16 and skipped my junior year. She drove me every day during summer breaks and summer school. She paid for extra credits by mail from Morehead State University. The look on her face when I was presented with my diploma was priceless. She was so proud and I was so grateful for all the encouragement she had given me. My mother has been gone now for 27 years and not a day goes by that I don't think of her and miss her. Thank you mom, I love you. Gina Hatton Irvine My favorite memory of my mom is at Thanksgiving and at Christmas. She loves to cook dinners for her family, and have her kids and grandkids at her house. Especially her grandkids. She loves her grandbabies. She had ten brothers and sisters and she wants every one of them to be at her house for the holidays. She is just a big family oriented person with a big heart, and such a good heart. Sue Wise Irvine My favorite memory of my mom (Mida Childers) is when she was living, every Sunday she would fix us a family dinner. Fried chicken and potatoes with everything else that a person could think of. Cindy Charlton Irvine My favorite memory of my mother is every day when I see her smiling, angelic face smiling back at me. My mother, Patsy Smith, is my best friend and every day I am blessed to be with her. She is my life and I love her very much. Darren Smith, Clay City One of my favorite memories of my mom was when I was a little girl. She worked at Sears in Harlan County. My dad and me would go eat lunch with her every day and sometimes I would stay at work with her and play like I worked there too. My mom and the old Sears store have been gone for over twenty years. I miss her laugh and the good old days with her. Those of you that still have your moms are blessed. Robin Smith Clay City As a little girl you held my hand, you taught me right from wrong. I looked up to you and wanted to be a strong woman just like you. You were the most important, wonderful person in the world and I am proud to call you mom. You were always there to dry my tears when I was sad, you always let me climb in bed with you when I got scared at night. I would talk all day for weeks and never find enough words that could ever describe what a wonderful mom you are to me. We have our ups and downs, but what mother and daughter don't. Now I am grown up with children of my own. You taught me everything that I needed to know to be a wonderful mom to my kids. I am blessed and thank you for raising me into the woman I am today. You are truly an Angel from Heaven here on earth to watch over me. I love you Mom, more than you will ever know. Thank you. Love, your daughter. Rhonda Harvey McKee

My favorite memory of my mom is about the July 4th picnics we had in her backyard. The round umbrella tables would be set up under the shade of the tulip poplar tree next to the brick patio making the area look so inviting. Her two neighbors and their families joined our family (four generations of us) for a potluck supper. The kids played in the pool, we ate delicious food and topped the night off with fireworks. Danna Kent Clay City Dear All Things Country, When I was near eleven years old, I came to the house where I lived. I was a foster child. Coming home on the bus, I saw the curtains move. I thought who in that house cares about the bus? Well, I thought it would have to be my mother. My brothers, two of them, were already in. I hit the bus with my fists. She's here, she's here. I was beside myself. The bus driver stared straight ahead, never said a word. I think I just jumped from the steps off the bus. I swang open the door, alright come on out, I know you're here. I thought 'what if she wasn't here?'. But I took the wind out of her, she couldn't stand up straight. You can't play tricks on kids. I was glad she was there. This is my best memory. Helen M. Bynum Jeffersonville My favorite memory of my mom? Wow, I have so many. There was a camping trip to the Smokies and we took the kids to swim. And we were just sitting and talking while the kids were swimming and there was a lady screaming "Help! My baby is drowning." My mom just jumped in with no hesitation and somehow got in reach of this little boy who took his little arms around her neck and they went down stream and at the bottom. My mom had to have an ambulance because of her asthma, but she was a hero that day. Sandra Crockett Jeffersonville My favorite memory of my mother is when she adopted me. Joe Estes Ravenna Every year when both our legs were younger we would drive to different places in Ravenna and pick wild flowers to dry. We would collect cat tails and flowers and solve all the problems we had. My mom was up for any adventure and we always had a good day. My mom found this paw print, but gave it to me. Her name is Margie Cahal. Mona Henry Ravenna My favorite memory of my mom is when we went on a hike in the cliffs behind our house and she was videotaping me and my dad in front of her on the trail. She fell, not hurting herself, but it was so funny everytime we watched the video or talked about it we laugh. Weslyn Faith McIntosh Beattyville I am thankful every day that I still have my mom here with us. I do not have one favorite memory of my mom growing up. Mine is more of a feeling, just knowing that she was always there for my sisters and I. It seems odd thinking back, but I know now not everyone has their mom always there to take care of them. Jennifer Barnett Carlisle

My favorite memory of my precious mom, who has been in Heaven since 1991. Her loving and caring smile. I grew up with six sisters and three brothers. The memory that really comes to mind quite often is her up very, very early each morning with the little radio turned down low listening to bluegrass gospel songs. She's fixing biscuits and gravy and the works for each of us before we got ready for school. The part that I could not understand was with each gospel song, she's humming along with them like she hasn't a care in the world. Later I understood why, when I got children of my own and I tried to make their lives as easy and enjoyable as I could, no matter how much you have or own. It's called a mothers love!!! Thank you, Charles Harrison Berea I'm 71 years old but I remember how proud my mother was when I was inducted into the National Honor Society in High School. Unknown to me, she took off work and was present in the audience. Charles Peck Irvine One of my favorite memories of my mom is raising a vegetable garden with her. Thinking about how the two of us set our tomato plants on the old tobacco setter while dad drove makes me smile. Every day we would go outside to see if our beans and corn had sprouted. When they did sprout she was so excited. When it was time to pick our vegetables she would make a game of it. Who could find the biggest tomato, or who could fill their baskets with beans the fastest. I don't think I will ever forget the good smells coming out of the kitchen as my mom canned up our vegetables, or the sound the jars made to let us know they were sealed. Thanks mom for the memories. Michael Trent Age 12 Jeffersonville My mother was Lucille Grooms Combs. She was born on the farm here in Jeffersonville. She was a wonderful hard working lady. She married young and remained married to my father until her death in 1986. I had one brother. Her first job out of the home was during WWII at Jeff Boat in Jeffersonville, Indiana. After the war we moved back to her family's farm where she was born. She was an active farmer in the fields, milking cows to sell milk to Carnation, raising hogs and chickens. She raised a huge garden preserving hundreds of jars of vegetables and fruits ever year. I never remember not having a balanced and attractive meal. She thanked her high school home economics teacher so often for her training to be an acceptable homemaker. She worked in Cactus taking and sold health insurance until her death. She was devoted to her church and taught Sunday School many years. I think she was as perfect as any mother could be! Janet Sharon Huff Jeffersonville The most favorite memory that I have about my Christian mother, Diane Dotson, is when she used to be downstairs on the piano practicing and singing her songs for church. She'll be gone three years on April 9th, but there's not one day that goes by that her four girls and two nephews and husband, Tommy, don't miss her. Phyllis J. Bolin Clay City My favorite memory of my mom, Regina Bolin, is when I was about 9 or 10 years old and as we were driving around the countryside to Frenchburg to see my grandparents and help work on the farm. She would sing old songs to us. Scottie Bolin Clay City

Onward Christian Soldier In loving memory of June Shuler

June Shuler was born in 1932 on Christmas Day, one of a set of twins. The other, a boy named Jack. She was one of thirteen children. She was nineteen when she married and she and her husband had a loving marriage for fifty-six years. She gave birth to two boys and a girl. This woman with such a gentle and docile spirit was the epitome of an old fashion Christian woman. Her black hair with a touch of grey beginning to streak through it was of no particular style; just a brush or comb went through it each day. Her square jaw line and the wrinkles just beginning to appear on her face gave the tale of years of wisdom and heartache in her life. She always wore dresses. Until years later after she had lost a lot of weight we talked her into buying her first pair of blue jeans. After that we couldn’t keep her out of pants. Her favorite place in the house was in the kitchen fixing meals for her family. Everything she did was with focus on other people. All you had to do was ask for something and she always gave it to you. She never asked for anything in return. This is why I always ask the question, “Why does a special person like this end up with breast cancer?” She waged the battle against this disease with such courage that it was impossible to know that there was anything wrong with her. She continued to take care of her family and do the things she needed to do. She fought this battle for twenty years, and then went into remission for around five years or so. And then at her next follow-up exam a spot showed up on her lung and then the battle was on again. It raged on for another six to seven years and then she went into a coma and after numerous tests had been run, her doctor said he didn’t think she would come out of it. She had been on a respirator for two weeks so the family decided to take it off and let fate take its course. After six hours she took her last breath and as I was holding her hand I told her it was okay to go on. She’d paid her dues and her suffering was over. We lost the cornerstone of our family that day. She has been gone now for six years and our lives have never been the same. She was endowed with every aspect of the Fruits of the Spirit, spoken of in Galatians 5:22. These are the words the pastor used when he spoke as her funeral the day we laid her to rest. She was a godly woman and a wonderful example of a good wife and mother. Would that we all carry those attributes. Amen. Kaye Shuler Beattyville

Thanks Wild Bill! Thank you to Bill Gordon for that wonderful “Requiem” for the mighty beach tree that fell on his property. It gave me a new appreciation for these wonderful trees.

I would add one more value to the long list he stated in his article. Their spectacular gold foliage on a bright blue October day against the silvery bark is really something. Thanks again Bill, from one tree hugger to another!

Sixteen Years of Age The year was nineteen sixty three When I went to Dad and asked If he’d rent me his tobacco crop That would be quite a task. The neighbors had been raising it But they said it was fine So when the crop was sold that winter , Half of what it brought was mine. Hard work and sweat all summer long But still I stayed the course , And I raised that crop all by myself With one old sorrel horse. When all was done I felt I was The leader of the troop , I bought myself a shiny Forty seven Chevy coupe. Spilt manifold and straight pipes That baby sounded sweet , Lowering blocks and fender skirts And rolled and pleated seats. A year I never will forget When my life turned the page In my book of precious memories To, sixteen years of age.

ithin the tranquility of spring looms the iridescent appeal, an array of greens, and delicate blooms. We have said good-bye to ‘Old Man Winter’ once more and upon the gift of God’s glorious luster, we welcome spring...hello our dear sweet season, how we have missed you. When traveling with my husband to interesting locations, I find that each place holds an array of captivating elegance; the timeless patience of historical buildings brings comfort to my soul. The mountains in Eastern Tennessee and Southwestern Virginia particularly have an appeal so unique that I catch my breath each time we visit there. The mountains offer grand desire to be seen…to have the wind whisper through the leaves and sing such a delightful transition of peace. In Southwestern Virginia, I have found that a particular barn has given me great joy and pleasure to photograph and to also write about. My love for this barn is deep…perhaps it is because my ancestors (4 generations back, grandfather and grandmother) are buried not far on private land that once was theirs. I am sure that they saw this barn, walked maybe through it, or even helped their neighbors. How grand is the notion that maybe I am touching a little history that their eyes saw and their fingers touched. A romantic old soul I am to fathom such endeavors as this! This must-see barn was built in 1911. Located on private land on Beech Grove Road in Jonesville, Virginia. Driving the beautiful backroads to get to Beech Grove Road is simply stunning within itself. I think of the roads and how it is leading me to the openness of surprise and beauty of the mountains… a present from GOD himself. Each time I travel there…I thank HIM for such beauty; the beauty of nature. Dale McNeil is the owner of several hundred acres on Beech Grove Road and the owner of this barn. Dale’s knowledge of the area is remarkable. He grew up on Beech Grove Road and has such a passion for his land as he takes pride in what his parents and grandparents have done, as well as himself. Booker T. McNeil built this barn primarily for hay, feed wagons, mangers, and cattle operations. The logs are primarily oak and the ceiling of the barn is red oak. The foundation is limestone carved to perfection and pulled from the mill by oxen. The cost of labor to build the barn was $52.50. An amazing number considering that a pair of shoes now would cost that or even more. It has 2 lofts and 9 feed ways. Later on it was adapted for dairy in the 50s and 70s as well as burley and tobacco storage. The aroma that still lurks in this barn of each century and what it has known…has a smell that allows me to close my eyes and feel what the barn has known. As generations have enjoyed, suffered and endured working in this barn, the memories will always hold to what this barn means to so many people…including myself. www.atcky.com
