Well, Happy September to ya! Happy September to all of you! We’re hoping that you are doing well, wherever you may be reading this from. Fall has definitely tried to arrive. We’ve had cool days, followed by very warm days, and now they say it’ll return to the cool pattern later this week. I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of dealing with all the changes in the weather. I’m ready for a Christmas where we don’t September 2015 Volume Ten Number Three

have to wear our heavy coats. And a fall where were don’t have to wear sweatshirts. You know, kind of an even keel type of deal. I’m scared our winter is going to be just as bad as last winter and that’s not going to be good for any of us! I will never, I repeat never, ask for a snowy winter again in Kentucky. Last year’s winter was enough. ••••••

At least we aren’t burning up like the Pacific Northwest is. It’s been horrifying to watch as many of my friends have lost their homes and even more are living with the fear of evacuation each day. I do not miss the wildfire season that seems to get worse every year. •••••• You’ll notice the magazine is much smaller. That happens from time to time. The number

of pages is dependent on the number of advertisers we have. And remember, I have to add 8 pages at a time, one or two pages isn’t possible. So, it’s either stuff it full, or pay for an additional 5 or 6 pages that we don’t get ads on. We have heard many advertisers say they’ll advertise again in October’s magazine, so we should be back to 32 or 40 pages by next month! •••••• And I’d like to wish my dad a very Happy 81st birthday on September 10th. I’m blessed that he’s still a daily presence in my life. Here’s to many more to come!

Blessings to you,

will occur. Some improvements under this agreement include replacing culverts impeding the Kentucky arrow darter’s natural movements and developing a forest-wide monitoring program for the fish. “The Candidate Conservation Agreement is the latest step to proactively address at-risk species throughout the Southeast,” said Southern Regional Forester Tony Tooke. “The CCA is another example of the long-standing partnership between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the U.S. Forest Service, which has produced multiple CCAs over the past several years.” The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will decide whether to protect the Kentucky arrow darter under the ESA later this fall. This decision is part of the Service’s efforts to implement a court-approved work plan under a Multi-District Listing Agreement aimed at addressing a series of lawsuits concerning the agency’s ESA listing program. The intent of the agreement is to significantly reduce a litigation-driven workload. For more information about the work plan, see http://www.fws.gov/ southeast/candidateconservation/. This settlement and others led to a broader partner-driven effort in the Southeast to more fully use flexibilities within the ESA to put the right conservation in the right places and benefit imperiled species. The proactive effort for the Kentucky arrow darter is part of this collaborative strategy to boost plant and wildlife populations and habitat before they need protection under the ESA. The proposed delisting of the white-haired goldenrod follows a comprehensive review by the Service of the best available scientific and commercial information concerning the plant’s status as required by the ESA. Along with the goldenrod’s proposed delisting, the Service is announcing a draft post-delisting monitoring plan for the plant. The public is invited to submit comments on the delisting proposal and the draft post-delisting monitoring plan for 60 days through November 2, 2015 Over the last 21 years, the Daniel Boone National Forest redirected trails, installed and maintained protective fencing around sensitive locations where the plant is found, completed numerous back-country patrols near white-haired goldenrod habitats, and placed informational signs at rock shelters, picnic areas, and trailheads that provided information about the plant and ways the public could avoid impacting it. The Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission completed multiple status surveys for the species from 1996 to 2013, including an intensive range-wide effort in 2008-2009. These surveys documented each occurrence’s population size and viability, habitat condition, and the severity of the threats facing each population. The Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission also prepared a variety of fact sheets and posters that educated the public about the plant and how to protect its populations. Currently, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Daniel Boone National Forest and the Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission are working to finalize a cooperative management agreement that will provide for the plant’s long-term protection. The management agreement outlines conservation actions that will benefit the goldenrod.

www.atcky.com -- September 2015

Stanton, Ky. – State and Federal conservation agencies came together here today to celebrate partnerships that are delivering conservation successes in eastern Kentucky. After more than two decades of collaboration and conservation work in the Daniel Boone National Forest, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is proposing to remove the white-haired goldenrod – a plant unique to eastern Kentucky – from the list of threatened and endangered species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Daniel Boone National Forest and the Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission played leading roles in the white-haired goldenrod’s recovery. White-haired goldenrod is only found in sandstone rock shelters or on sandstone cliffs with overhanging ledges in the Red River Gorge region of eastern Kentucky. When the plant was listed as threatened in 1988, threats included the loss of habitat due to recreational activities such as rock climbing, hiking, camping, and rappelling; artifact collection; and a proposed reservoir project. “The Daniel Boone National Forest began a project to fence white-haired goldenrod sites affected by recreational use in about 2003,” said Bill Lorenz, forest supervisor for the Daniel Boone National Forest. “We asked the public to help us protect the plant by staying out of the fenced rock shelters where some damage was occurring. We were pleased at how quickly members of the public acknowledged our request and complied.” “The Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission has been monitoring white-haired goldenrod in the Red River Gorge for more than 20 years,” said Donald S. Dott, Jr., director Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission. “While recreational impact to some of the populations has occurred, the majority of the plant’s populations have been stable for well over 10 years. We believe that with an annual monitoring program, public education, and an effective management plan coordinated by several agencies and conservation groups, this unique and rare goldenrod will be protected.” “We are thankful for the great efforts of the U.S. Forest Service and the Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission that helped us guide the white-haired goldenrod toward recovery,” said Mike Oetker, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Southeast Deputy Regional Director. “The proposed delisting of the whitehaired goldenrod demonstrates that the Endangered Species Act works, and we will continue to work with our conservation partners to monitor and manage the plant’s populations.” At the same time, the two federal agencies also are stepping up to proactively conserve the Kentucky arrow darter, a candidate for protection under the ESA. Through a Candidate Conservation Agreement signed today, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and U.S. Forest Service are committing to take actions that will protect the small fish found in some of the small, headwater streams of the Daniel Boone National Forest. The Red Bird Ranger District of the Daniel Boone National Forest is a stronghold for the darter. Populations of the Kentucky arrow darter in the Daniel Boone National Forest and the University of Kentucky’s Robinson Forest constitute almost 49 percent of the species’ remaining occupied habitat. Habitat loss and degradation represent the most significant threats to the darter. This commitment to proactive, voluntary conservation will ensure needed management actions for the Kentucky arrow darter

Reader’s Poetry

White-gloved hands passed me the flag And I rubbed the firm folds with my thumbs.

Written by L. Dail Haney Beattyville, KY

Military pomp seemed out of place In these hills where angels come To watch God’s wild creatures play And I still miss someone.

A Father’s Lament

Redbuds and dogwoods, poplars showing green Pregnant hills trembling ‘neath the sun A soft breeze speaks of springtime Earth’s regeneration has begun. The pungent odor of new-turned earth Stark gray winter on the run Honey bees working the cherry blossoms And I still miss someone. The mockingbird sings sweetly Of long summer days to come Fishing the creek below the willows Measuring time by things not yet done. Resting in the porch swing A good day’s work is done Eyes falling on the empty chair And I still miss someone. Wild roses grow by the gravestone Vietnam, the Big Red One Born to die for a soldier In a land he would never have known. A hero, the letter told me I got the silver star he won It makes a pocket-sized headstone And I still miss someone.

Now I lay me down to sleep I pray the morn to come Night belongs to haunting dreams And the crushing silence that wears on. Oh, to know his deepest longing When he saw his time had come For passing through to worlds unknown And I still miss someone. This farm was his to love and work On the day he turned twenty-one But he’s nineteen ‘till time is no more His days on earth are done. Holding fast to the memories Trying to carry on Feeling the loss in all that I see I’ll ever miss someone.

And So Much More By Tommie Catherine Speagle When the rain falls in early Spring And the grass and trees start to turn green Your feet feel the wetness of morning dew. The flowers show colors of every hue. You feel like flying with the birds and bees And landing high up in the trees. Then look up for God is there. He’s there in every breeze, In every bird, in all the trees, In every fish that swims the seas. You’ll find Him in all of these - and so much more. He’s great and mighty, but gentle, too And all your life He’s there for you.... AND SO MUCH MORE!

September is National Chicken Month

National Forest Ginseng Season, Rules To Know WINCHESTER – Ginseng harvest season in the Daniel Boone National Forest opens soon, but there are some rules to know before you go. Many people believe ginseng to have medicinal value in treating a variety of health conditions. The herbal market has increased the demand, and wild ginseng populations are dwindling as a result. The DBNF has established policy to help conserve ginseng on national forest lands. Ginseng may be collected only during a twoweek period from September 15 – 30. A permit is required, which may be purchased at any district office beginning September 1. Only one $20 permit is issued per person per year. The permit must be on the person when collecting. Permit holders may collect up to one pound only of green, non-dried ginseng root. The permits apply only to national forest lands on the district that issues the permit. Forest-wide harvest or taking from more than one district is prohibited. Permits are limited and may be restricted to specific areas. Maps and harvest area descriptions will be provided. Only wild ginseng plants with three or more leaves and at least five years old may be harvested. Collectors can determine plant age by counting leaf scars at the top of the root before removing it from the ground. To provide for future crops, ginseng collectors are required by law to plant seeds from harvested plants within 50 feet of the

harvest location. “All of these rules are for good reason,” said Forest Botanist David Taylor. “If people follow these rules, they can help ensure that we have ginseng in the future. “The illegal harvest of ginseng is impacting this species across southern Appalachia, and in some areas, it’s been reduced to unsustainable levels, which means it is likely to disappear from that area for good.” On national forest lands, anyone removing wild ginseng plant or its parts without a permit or outside of the legal harvest season is considered theft. Penalties for poaching may include a fine up to $5,000 or 6-month sentence in federal prison, or both. U.S. Forest Service law enforcement officials have issued several citations over the last few months that require a mandatory court appearance in federal court. Most recently, three individuals were fined $500 each and sentenced to two years/30 days probation. The Kentucky state regulations and harvest season for ginseng are different from the rules that apply in the Daniel Boone National Forest. For more information, visit the state website at http://www.kyagr.com/marketing/ginseng.html and the DBNF website at http://www.fs.usda.gov/main/dbnf/passes-permits/ forestproducts.

COLOR OF HOPE Hospice 5K Color Run

Saturday, September 26, 2015 • Irvine, Kentucky On-Site Registration & Check-In: 8 AM - 8:45 AM • Race Begins: 9:00 AM

It’s not timed because, well, it’s all about FUN. Prepare for a party of color at the finish line. Wear white and bring a camera: you’ll want to share pics of yourself doused in a rainbow of color. Oh, and the best part? You get to have a great time, get a little excercise, AND you’re doing GOOD: all proceeds go to Hospice Care Plus! Win-win!

Register now for the event known as the happiest run/walk in the world: the COLOR RUN! Early Registration Fee: $25

Deadline September 18th, 2015 by 5:00 pm.

So, what IS a Color Run?

It’s a run or walk, but it feels much more like a party. There’s usually live music and other perks at the finish line. Then, of course, what makes it distinctive is the color. At intervals along the course, you’ll be dusted with a brightly colored powder. Then, at the end, the REAL color-fun begins: several volunteers with several bright colors will make a rainbow out of you! The powder, by the way, is cornstarch-based, non-toxic, and non-permanent.

Handy Tips! •

Non-refundable

Registration Fee Day of Race: $30.

Register online at the link or at any Citizens Guaranty Bank location. http://events.r20.constantcontact.com/register/event Non-refundable

• About Hospice Care Plus All proceeds from the Color of Hope 5K for Hospice will go to Hospice Care Plus, a non-profit organization serving Estill, Jackson, Lee, Madison, Owsley and Rockcastle counties. Hospice Care Plus and the Hospice Care Plus Compassionate Care Center provide hospice, palliative, and grief support care to patients, families, and the community, regardless of ability to pay. We have proudly served the area since 1981.

Wear white or light-colored clothes. You’ll want the color to show! Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes. No one will be tossing the colorful powders at your face (well, unless you WANT them to!), but it’s a good idea to cover them up, just in case. Don’t forget the camera! Or, at least have someone at the finish line ready to take your pic. Sharing your rainbowcolored self on Facebook or other places is a HUGE part of the color-run fun! Bring a towel. You might want to dust some of your rainbow off before you get into your car. But, I’ve never done a 5K! This is an untimed race. That doesn’t mean you can’t use it as a way to set a goal for yourself, though. If you’ve never done a 5K, this is the PERFECT place to start: non-threatening, enjoyable, and fun! Set a goal. It may be that you simply want to finish a 5K, regardless of whether you walk or run--or both. It may be that your goal is to run or jog the entire 3.1 miles. There are many resources online to help you prepare for a 5K, especially if you hope to jog or run the entire distance. Google “couch-to-5K” for great resources. If it isn’t your first 5K, you can still set a time goal and keep time yourself.

What Is Thrillsville?

September 2015 -- www.atcky.com

Thrillsville is an is an Aerial Adventure Course about 40 feet off the ground. There are currently 16 different adventures on the course. Each adventure is self-guided and creates a different learning experience for the participant. After gearing up in a full body harness with a belay device, participants hear a short safety briefing, then practice and then demonstrate how to use the belay device. Now, the Thrills begin! There are 3 ways to get on the course. The most popular is to climb Victory tower which is a massive 40’ climbing tower. Victory tower has two sides to climb. The most popular side starts with “The Super Sloper” which has an easy slope on the lower half. The other side is a straight up vertical wall with 6 different climbing routes ranging from moderate to very difficult. The third and easiest way to get on the course is by way of a wooden ladder. From the tower you are on to zip lining, you zip across to a series of platforms where you move through an upper and lower course. There is a smart belay system that allows for participants to be gently lowered to the ground when exiting from the course . This activity if fun for all ages but specifically designed at participants 70-250lbs. Participants must be 10 years old to do the entire course by themselves. Children under 10 can climb the Super Sloper easy side of Victory Tower at a reduced rate. There are no height restrictions on this course. The price is $49.99 per person. The average amount of time spent on the course has been between an 1 hour and fifteen minutes to an 1 and 30 minutes, no matter how many times you fall!

When is Thrillsville Open??

Wednesday and Thursday, 10am to 6pm • Friday & Saturday, 10am to 8pm • Sunday, 9am to 6pm (Please allow 90 minutes)

I know of some who have thought of each passing moment as their last. I know of some who have WANTED each passing moment to be their last. I know of some who have sat wondrously waiting for their time to come. Their time to explore, their time to discover, or maybe even their time to leave this temporary existence. But when ones patience has been tested and one considers leaving the waiting room and going out the same way they went in then perhaps that brief moment is the one filled with most excitement. For just when one decides to throw in the towel is when one finds hope in the bitter moments of despair. That’s when God opens the door to more than you yourself are capable of. I know a man who bounced off track. This same man lived many years trying to pull himself back on the line. He got to the point where return to a better state seemed out of reach and his own mindset set himself back. His humor dwindled. The music stopped. The days were spent not living dreams but having them. Conversations were shortened and so were the days expected to be by his side. I know a woman so pure and so strong. She stood by his bedside through each passing moment. She kept a smile when her patience was tested and though her shell of peace was sometimes cracked she never allowed it to shatter upon the path she traveled. Her countenance is pleasant but she has much more spinning around her mind than she’ll ever reveal. She sits there waiting each passing day wondering if today is the day he doesn’t wake up. She sits there in silence with nothing but the sound of a constant snore to remind her of her responsibility. Just at the moment when this angel of charity begins to droop her wings and lose sight of hope, he opens his eyes. He has somehow changed and originated back into original form. He laughs. The music plays. He’s full of tenderness and looks towards a goal of recovery. She is enlightened and has found when she thought her life would never be filled with memories of a world beyond a Ranch Road sign, Candy Crush Saga, and Days of Our Lives she is proven otherwise. He is well now. She is free. Just when he thought it was too late to play the music, just when he thought his independence had been lost the Lord proved him otherwise. He found a life worth fighting for. Just when she thought it was too late to listen to the music without having a form of spite for his dependency, just when her seat next to the windowsill was starting to become just a little too warm she is granted opportunity. And with his recovery she is nudged into the direction of exploration. And at 68 and 58 they prove to me that there’s always hope or an unknown miracle waiting to be performed just when you think it’s too late.

4. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

When you first lay eyes on this beautifully decorated, custom built 3-story mountain home we call the Wine Cellar, you will think you are in Tuscany, Italy, not Kentucky! Too deluxe to be called a ‘cabin’, this home features three bedrooms - one on each floor, two full baths with mosaic tile showers, a huge open living/dining area, a combination rec room and wine tasting bar with a pool table and wine cooler, and attention to detail you won’t believe. From the stone porch, to the interior and exterior arches, from the built-in headboard in the master bedroom and the built-in bed frame in the open loft bedroom, to the hot tub with a view of both the enormous rock outcropping in back and the mountain range in front, the Wine Cellar will exceed your expectations. All furniture, appliances, custom decor, supplies and bedding are included. Price just reduced to $349,000. Enjoy this mountain home yourself or rent it out, with experienced management already in place. See a slideshow, video, and nearly 75 pictures at www. cabinsofbirchhollow.com. Click on the Cabins tab, then scroll to click on Wine Cellar, one of 10 premiere cabins located on 200 private acres in Stanton, Kentucky. This cabin is featured on the inside front cover of this magazine. Call Dale Smith, Licensed Real Estate Broker/Owner at 606-663-0005 for further information and to schedule a personal tour of this amazing mountain home.
